Tartan Fantail

Superior Performance & Stability

The hull form is a contemporary shape without extremes, designed to deliver predictable and rewarding performance. She has a fine entry forward with plenty of hull volume in the topsides to properly balance the full aft sections. Through her mid-body the sections are vee’d for a sea kindly motion. Running aft the sections are broad and flat for great stability and off the wind performance. The freeboard must be carefully balanced to provide adequate sitting headroom below, a dry ride on deck and exceptional good looks.

Tartan Fantail

A "Green" Performance Machine

The Fantail Series are built with low HAPS resins and processes that not only provide great physical properties butare also environmentally conscious. The Fantail continues to offer a green advantage as a daysailor/overnighter with non-polluting electric propulsion. Enjoy quiet motoring out of your favorite harbor in harmony with the environment. Electrically powered by a Torqeedo 2R Cruiser motor with remote forward/reverse and throttle allowing you to power in silence with only the sound of the bow wake. Once under sail, enjoy a cold beverage and some nice music, completing the perfect sailing experience.

Tartan Fantail

A Stand Out Rig

The fractional rig is large yet manageable, featuring a self-tacking jib for efficient and effortless upwind sailing. A sail area to displacement ratio of 26 guarantees rewarding light air performance. Balanced by 1200 lbs. of ballast in a very low center of gravity bulb design, the Fantail will also stand up to a breeze. Off-wind, extend the sprit and set the large asymmetrical spinnaker for maximum performance without the need of a large crew. The Fantail DS and WE can be fit with an optional carbon pocket boom with integral mainsail cover and lazy jacks for convenient mainsail handling. Efficient performance and ease of handling are the hallmarks of the Fantail rig.

Tartan Fantail

The Tartan Difference

Whether picking the Daysailor or Weekender, the Fantail is a perfectly polished jewel to add to any fleet or the ideal first boat to welcome the family to the joy of sailing.

Tartan Fantail

  • By Tim Murphy
  • Updated: November 4, 2014

Versatility was a big theme among this year’s new boats, and no builder exemplified that theme better than Tartan Yachts with its Fantail. A head-turner on the show docks, Tartan’s 26-foot Fantail comes in three versions: daysailer, club trainer and weekender. While the hull, cockpit dimensions and sailplan of all three versions are identical, the daysailer comes with a flush deck and cuddy cabin; the club trainer omits Tartan’s lovely brightwork for the sake of easy maintenance; and the weekender offers the simple accommodations of berths, burners, 12-volt reefer and head under a cabin house and foredeck that adds 10½ inches of headroom. All three versions are tiller-steered; we sailed the weekender.

“The premise behind the Fantail,” said Andy Drumm, Tartan’s director of sales and operations, “is to bring people into the family. Before this, our entry-level Tartan was our 3400, and that’s a big boat.” The Fantail is optimized for shorthanded sailing. All sail controls are led aft to the cockpit, several through turning blocks under the deck and coamings. The weekender and daysailer versions offer a self-tacking jib for upwind sailing and a retractable sprit for an asymmetric chute off the wind. Our Boat of the Year judging team sailed the boat in a whispery 6 to 8 knots — with a boat speed of 4.6 knots on the wind. Later in the week I hopped back on for a brief, rollicking reach up Maryland’s Severn River with the chute up and found her helm very nicely balanced.

Tartan is doing two things in its production that add significant value to its boats, especially if you’re comparing price with boats from other builders. Tartan’s resin-infused hulls and decks are built with epoxy, which is simply better than polyester — so much so that Tartan offers an unparalleled 15-year structural nonblistering warranty on its boats. The second thing is they build their own carbon pocket booms, which saves weight up high and simplifies the mainsail takedown. Tartan may soon offer a carbon mast for this boat.

Tartan is experimenting with electric propulsion as part of the Fantail’s standard package. The system is built around a 6-horsepower Torqeedo outboard and a single 24-volt lithium-ion battery. The Torqeedo controller panel with built-in GPS reads out the battery discharge rate, as well as speed. According to Drumm, a fully charged battery will last 16 hours at half throttle, or two hours at full throttle, pushing the boat at just over 6 knots. During our test, the motor provided plenty of power as we ran out of the calm harbor, but we had no chance to test it in a seaway or against a current, nor time to discharge and recharge the battery.

On the weekender we sailed, we would like to have seen an attractive cover or seat over the marine head, installed just inside the companionway to port, and the heavy free-floating hatch boards could benefit from further refinement.

Taking advantage of the Fantail’s street-legal 8-foot-5-inch beam, Tartan offers a great trailer option for this boat, at $6,500. It’s a double-axle trailer that, Drumm says, can be pulled behind a midsize SUV. Studs installed near the boat’s balance point accept a bracket that allows the Fantail to be hauled out with a yacht-club gin pole, omitting yard charges. All up, the Fantail is a fun, well-designed boat that looks mighty inviting for a young family of sailors.

fantail yacht

Historical Summary:

Broker's comments (2012):.

With significant influence by the *Ted Geary design group, this fantail luxury yacht was designed for the author Stewart Edward White by the Lee and Brinton Naval Architectural firm of San Francisco and Seattle. Built in 1930 by the Lake Washington Ship Yard in Houghton, WA and equipped for long range cruising with a party of eight aboard, the main deckhouse features separate cabin spaces for the wheelhouse, dining salon, galley, and a cozy main salon with a wood burning fireplace. Covered port and starboard promenade decks and an aft deck lounge at the fantail provide excellent walk-about space and an ideal setting for alfresco dining and evening cocktails. Below decks a full beam master stateroom aft and three guest cabins forward provide comfortable voyaging accommodation for eight. A full beam engine room is amidships with built-in cabinets, a work bench and ample elbow space for onboard projects, houses a huge and highly dependable 380 HP Caterpillar D-353 TA 6-cylinder 4-cycle diesel engine and several Gensets. The upper deck features a complete helm station with a large observation / sunning settee with a Bimini top that is forward of an extended boat deck area with davit, an electric windlass, a tender, and ample deck storage space. A rare embodiment of yachtings original allure, this classic fantail is of the era when American craftsman fashioned select timbers into yachts of custom designs that were built to serve a family from one generation to the next. Over the decades Creole has been proven by numerous voyages from the U.S. to Hawaii, the South Pacific, the Caribbean and a number of Atlantic crossings, and two years ago received significant upgrades and interior refitting. The refit work included a major electrical overhaul and upgrade, new plumbing for the domestic water system, three new Head Hunter heads, new GE galley propane stove and microwave, new mattresses and bedding, new drapes and carpet.

"MIRIAM" IS A CLASSIC FANTAIL MOTOR YACHT

Formerly Registered With The Classic Yacht Association

In The " Vintage Yacht"   Category

J.M. MARTINAC

Offered for the first time in almost thirty years. “Miriam” is a classic Ted Geary Style 1946 (post war) 79ft. Fantail Motor Yacht. She was constructed in the Pacific Northwest by J.M. Martinac Shipyard in Tacoma WA. The current owner has been going through a continuous 26-year refit to bring Miriam to its current level. Updates include extensive woodwork, bright work and now mechanical reworking. The owner personally maintained the boat cosmetically to the highest of standards.  Interior and exterior finishes should be considered exceptional. She features at deck level a large airy salon, followed by a galley and dining area. There is a raised Pilothouse with access to weather decks port and starboard.  Below decks are four staterooms and four heads (refer to accommodations) with Fore & Aft  access to the walk-in engine room.

In 1972 Miriam was converted from a single engine vessel to a twin screw Caterpillar powered Motor Yacht by Floating Marine Ways, Inc.
