The Most Expensive Superyacht in the World

When it comes to superyachts, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, certainly knows how to make a statement.

His luxury vessel, the 463-foot Al Mirqab, holds the title of the world’s most expensive superyacht.

Built in 2008 by German shipbuilder Peters Werft, this impressive yacht is complete with 10 luxurious cabins, a conference room, cinema, and all the amenities one would expect from a vessel of this magnitude.

In addition, the Al Mirqab features a helipad, swimming pool, and even an outdoor Jacuzzi.

With a price tag of over $400 million, the Al Mirqab is one of the most expensive yachts in the world.

In addition to the Emir of Qatar, there are several other notable owners of superyachts.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos all own luxurious vessels.

Bezos yacht, the aptly named The Flying Fox, is one of the longest superyachts in the world at a staggering 414 feet in length.

The Flying Fox also comes with a host of amenities, such as a helipad, swimming pool, spa, and multiple outdoor entertaining areas.

Bezos also reportedly spent over $400 million on the vessel.

Other notable owners of superyachts include Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who owns the $200 million Kingdom 5KR, and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who owns the $200 million Rising Sun.

There are also many lesser-known owners, such as hedge-fund manager Ken Griffin, who owns the $150 million Aviva, and investor Sir Philip Green, who owns the $100 million Lionheart.

No matter who owns them, superyachts are sure to turn heads.

With their impressive size, luxurious amenities, and hefty price tags, these vessels have become a symbol of wealth and prestige.

Whether its the Emir of Qatar or a lesser-known owner, the worlds superyacht owners are sure to make a statement.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

che sara sara yacht owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

SUPERYACHT LIFE

The human side of yacht ownership

How would you characterise the typical yacht owner? Whatever you may have been led to believe, the truth is simple: for most, it’s about using their yachts for precious family time, and for many it’s also about using their yachts for good.

There’s a theme that is repeated on countless yachts large and small the world over – superyachting, for most, is not about being seen but rather the opposite. It’s about yacht families and their friends enjoying precious, private moments away from the pressures of demanding business lives and the long hours running those businesses can entail.

“I have an extended family, and when our schedules allow we all like to gather on the yacht and spend some quality time as a family,” Douglas Barrowman , owner of the yacht Turquoise , told Superyacht Life back in 2017. “There is no place like a yacht for family togetherness.”

A love of the sea, adventure and technology

Superyachts and yacht ownership are also a way to explore the world around us, and to interact with and grow to understand extraordinarily diverse communities from remote Pacific islands to the Scandinavian Arctic. It’s something that inspired tech entrepreneur Jasper Smith to combine his love of adventure and his love of the sea with an opportunity for owners to give back while indulging their passion.

“I have always had a deep passion for the ocean,” Smith says. “I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau movies and being enthralled at the idea of being challenged by an endeavour.” When he set out to find his own perfect explorer yacht, however, he realised it didn’t yet exist. His answer was to create Arksen. “My aim with Arksen was to create the perfect machines to enable adventure,” he enthuses. “I also wanted to build sustainable boats which considered full life cycles, from material sourcing to recycling.”

That’s not all – Arksen also asks owners of its yachts to sign up to a pledge it calls 10% for the Ocean, where they will donate 10% of their vessel’s time to philanthropic activities. “A lot of people who have the money feel a responsibility to try and make sure that the oceans are well looked after,” Smith explains. “The people that are attracted to Arksen are passionate about the ocean and want to go off on slightly more advanced expeditions and trips. With that audience, there is a tremendous buy-in to the boat being for more than just their own purposes.”

The human side of yacht ownership

Superyachts as a force for good

It speaks to the heart of the matter, which is that the superyacht industry and yacht owners in particular have a heart – they care about preserving the environment they enjoy, and they care about the communities they interact with who make them feel so welcome when they visit. It’s reflected in the smallest of gestures, such as donating materials and books to local schools, to the largest – helping with last-mile delivery of critical disaster relief. It’s about superyachts giving back.

It’s a positive-impact attitude toward humanity that is quietly typified by hundreds of superyacht owners, who often prefer to do their thing under the radar rather than take false glory for their philanthropic or humanitarian endeavours. For some it’s as straightforward as getting involved in projects with organisations like YachtAid Global . For others, their endeavours become a key reason for yachting.

American superyacht owner Carl Allen is a prime example of these philanthropic yacht owners. After selling his company, and having enjoyed chartering and owning yachts as a family for years, Allen set up Allen Explorations to deliver a full programme of projects, ranging from historical shipwreck searches and environmental research to disaster relief. Indeed, Allen’s support yacht Axis played a vital role in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian – one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Bahamas.

“We had to drop everything and help after the hurricane,” says Allen. “ Axis delivered over £700,000 of supplies and made multiple trips to Little Grand island in the Bahamas. We’ve turned it into the epitome of how to organise hurricane relief.” The team helped get the local school back up and running, and organised for a group from Florida Power and Light to help restore power. “The island also lost their water tower,” he adds, “so we delivered four tanks on  Axis .”

Celebrating the good in the superyachting good life

From family time to time spent embracing the global family, superyacht owners have a far greater positive impact than many assume from preconceived ideas about what a superyacht is and the sort of person who owns or charters one. It’s one of the reasons The Superyacht Life Foundation, in association with the Monaco Yacht Show , has unveiled The Honours, which is a way to celebrate the people of our industry rather than the yachts which so often get sole focus. It’s about recognising the extraordinary contributions that people make, the change they inspire, the opportunities they create, and the lives they change.

On 26 September, the eve of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, three honourees – nominated by people from across the superyacht industry, and selected from a shortlist by an expert panel of industry judges – will be feted for their work and contribution to superyachting. These are industry professionals and yacht owners who epitomise what superyachting can do. These are people who highlight the good in the superyachting good life.

Yacht owners, impactful journeys

All around the globe, yacht owners are enjoying precious time on their yachts with family and friends, and many are also realising that their yachts can be a force for good and for change, tying in with their philanthropic works and humanitarian endeavours.

“Our yacht is a platform for much of our life,” offers Joe Anderson , co-owner of the Benovia Winery in California with his wife, Mary Dewane. “For instance, we used it at a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis in Baltimore at the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner event. The Blue Angels were flying overhead and used Bella Una [the couple’s yacht] as a GPS coordinate and performed flybys, tipping their wings at us. It was quite a thrill. Having a yacht is a way to keep the family intact, enjoy time with friends and have fun.”

Latest fishing reports and news, 8 sep 2013 by roger phillips.

Lumpy old start to the day punching out through the waves to the 12 mile reef mark. The state of the tide and wind produced a lovely slow drift which soon had us into some nice pollock. The action was steady and at the end of the day we had well over 100 pollock 3lb to 8lb, 1 nice cod 8lb we dont see these very often, gurnard, ling and wrasse. Plenty of mackeral still about nice small bait size which were used to entise the pollock as well as sand eel, shads and rubber eels of various colours. The pollock were being caught on the first few turns and also maybe as far as 30 to 40 turns up good sport on light tackle very enjoyable day.

21 Aug 2013 by Roger Phillips

It takes a lot to be a charter boat skipper, patience would be the top of the list i reckon. Was one of those days where we were put on the fish time and time again but they didnt want to play. Various baits being used to tempt the pollock, frozen sand eel, mackeral strips and artifical of all shapes, sizes and colours. In the morning we drifted several good marks picking up the odd one or two here and there.Tide turned in the afternoon and the fishing did pick up with several nice pollock coming aboard. At times it was very hard going as the fish didnt really come on the feed but nice to be out enjoying the sun. Everybody had fish to take home so all in all not such a bad day. Mackeral, pollock, ling , gurnard and wrasse making up the catch.

4 Aug 2013 by Roger Phillips

Not so far out today as sea conditions were far from perfect, ended up drifting on a reef about 5 mile off. Plenty of marks on the sounder and due to the rough conditions the fish stayed hugging the bottom. The first few drifts produced the best fishing of the day due to the wind against tide slowing up the drift. The pollock weren't the biggest but not bad for reef fish and we soon had several aboard. As per norm some had a better day than others and also nice to see the mackerel showing up at long last. Not the best days fishing and certainly not the worst, mackerel, gurnard and pollock making up the majority of the catch.

21 Jul 2013 by Roger Phillips

Well a day of some that did and some that didn't.We were put amongst the fish either by fishing on the drift or at anchor. Drifting a wreck did produce some nice pollock at first and when anchored on later the pollock went off and then the ling started coming aboard. Soon as the tide started to make, it was back on the pollock again as i said before it was a day of anglers and danglers. The wind picked up abit in the afternoon as we moved off to a inshore reef which made fishing on the drift difficult but still produced a few pollock. Dolphins put in a couple of visits as well as some sun fish. Pollock, ling, dogfish, gurnard and one or two pouting normal mixed bag of fish.

10 Jul 2013 by Roger Phillips

Proper hot weather and proper fishing great day out. 14 mile out wrecking and reefing 50 plus pollack and a few ling thrown in for good measure. One or two gurnard and several anglers having to pay fines for catching pouting.Dolphins sighted through out the day and the sea was flat calm certainly not what we are used to long may it last.

6 BREATHTAKING places in Karachay-Cherkessia you must visit (PHOTOS)

 Karachay-Cherkessia mountains.

Karachay-Cherkessia mountains.

Together with local tour guide Artem Babaritsky, we’ll take you on a virtual journey of the region’s finest gems and best kept secrets that will make you want to start packing your bags!

1. Bermamyt Plateau

che sara sara yacht owner

Bermamyt Mountain is 2,592 meters above sea level and because of its unusual terrain, the Bermamyt Plateau is sometimes dubbed an ‘Outpost of Mars in the North Caucasus’. Though it’s only 30 kilometers from Kislovodsk (a popular resort town in Stavropol Krai), it’s pretty hard to get to, unless you own a four-wheel drive vehicle, so (for now) it’s still not super touristy. And it’s a very bumpy ride!

che sara sara yacht owner

On a clear day, wonderful views open up revealing the incredible snow-covered ranges of the Greater Caucasus and Mount Elbrus. But even on a cloudy day, you’ll get quite the view. Seasoned travelers who have seen the sunset on all the continents say that the one you can see on some evenings at Bermamyt is easily one of the best ever. It’ll be a while before you manage to ply your jaw off the ground!

Arkhyz is a real playground for adventure lovers all year round. In summer, this village in the valley of the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River (sitting at an altitude of 1,450 meters) is especially pleasing to the eye, since everything drowns in greenery and there are many blue lakes and fast rivers to explore. It’s a great place to do some easy rafting along this gorgeous mountain river.

It’s also a place to give your health a boost. The fresh mountain air attracts people with respiratory problems to help them alleviate their condition, at least for a little while.

In the vicinity of Arkhyz, there are numerous historical and architectural monuments for those especially interested in early Christianity in the Caucasus. The Zelenchuksy Churches are an archaeological preserve extending for 4 kilometers around the ruins of Nizhnearkhyzskoe gorodishche , tentatively identified as the medieval capital of Alania, a Christian state destroyed by the hordes of Mönghe Khan in the 13th century. The most remarkable feature of the site is a cluster of three early medieval churches.

Another tourist attraction in the valley is a mandylion-type rock painting of Christ that appears to date back to the 10th century but was discovered only recently. This icon is quite hidden on the slope of the Matseshta ridge; various legends have been circulating about its provenance.

che sara sara yacht owner

The elevation of the surrounding mountains is more than 3,000 meters above the sea, so, in the winter, it attracts mountain sports enthusiasts. Arkhyz is one of the newest ski resorts on the territory of the Russian Federation. Its infrastructure is still under development (but already very impressive) and experts predict a great future for the resort. The prices for winter holidays in Arkhyz are strikingly different from the prices at the famous European resorts. Moreover, the quality of the tracks and climatic conditions are in no way inferior to their expensive counterparts.

3. Sofia Waterfalls and Sofia Lakes

che sara sara yacht owner

A walk along Mount Sofia entails lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and flower meadows. Among vacationers, this is a very popular outing because of its accessibility. To get to the waterfalls you will need to hire a jeep from Arkhyz or Taulu Valley. Get ready for a really bumpy ride, especially since the locals love to drive fast!

Sofia Waterfalls - a rushing stream of water falling from the mountain slope of Mount Sofia, is the second highest in the region at 3,637 meters (11,932 ft). The Sofia River originates in the Sofia glacier, from which, along the steep slopes of the mountains, it flows in a stormy stream into the valley. The hike to the waterfalls from the place your jeep drops you off is neither easy nor difficult, somewhere in the middle. It is two kilometers one way, with a 300-meter climb. However, in places, the path is very narrow and steep, so make sure to wear very sturdy footwear.

che sara sara yacht owner

Then there are the Sofia Lakes, a place of extraordinary beauty – but you really have to work for this beauty! The trek is four kilometers one way with a 900-meter ascent. Visiting both in one day is doable, but keep in mind that you will have to overcome 12 kilometers of track and reach an altitude of 1,200 meters. If you are going to visit both places on the same day, it is advisable to first go to the Sofia Lakes, since the road there is more difficult, and keep in mind that you run the risk of not having enough time for the Sofia Waterfalls.

4. Dombay and Teberda

che sara sara yacht owner

Dombay and Teberda are two towns located within the Teberda Nature Reserve. In winter, this is one of the most popular ski resorts in this part of the Caucasus and in the warmer months, this is an absolute mecca for hikers. The opportunities and routes are virtually endless, so it makes sense to make Dombay or Teberda (both boast a range of accommodation options to suit any budget) your base in order to explore as much as you can. After all, there are 100 lakes and 64 waterfalls on the territory of Dombay and Teberda.

Mount Mussa-Achitara, Gonachkhir gorge, Baduk lakes, Alibek waterfall, Turye lake, Amanauz gorge, Manor of Teberdinsky reserve, Jamagat gorge and narzans, Mukha gorge, Azgek gorge, Chuchkhur waterfalls, Byzantine temples from the 10th century and Sufrudzhinskie waterfalls are just some examples of the natural beauty that can be found in this area. Hiking trails are open until late autumn, so there’s plenty of time to explore it all!

che sara sara yacht owner

During winter, skiers and snowboarders flock to Dombay’s highest peak, Mussa-Achitara (3,012 meters; 9,881 ft), which offers ten pistes of varying difficulty and the chance to stay at the UFO-shaped Tarelka (“Flying Saucer”) Hotel, right on the slope.  For those who want an adrenaline rush, there’s also the option of free riding. While off-piste, skiing and snowboarding at the resort is in the so-called “grey zone” of legality, there are no rigid rules against it either. You can opt for a safer way to shred through the fresh deep powder by hiring an experienced guide to show you how to have fun on the slopes while staying safe.

5. Sentinsky Church

che sara sara yacht owner

Standing proudly on a high rocky cliff of the Burun-Syrt massif overlooking the valley of the Teberda River, the Sentinsky Church is over 1,000 years old and is still in excellent condition. This, in itself, is a miracle because throughout its history it has lived through the Tatar-Mongol invasion, Islamization, the Russo-Turkish war, the Caucasian War, the church plunders of the Soviet regime, the Second World War and the chaos of the 1990s.  Back in medieval times, it used to be part of Alania, a once-prosperous kingdom in the Caucasus. The church is located near the village of Nizhnaya Teberda.

6. ‘Grishkina Balka’ Karst Caves

che sara sara yacht owner

“I do not know who this Grishka is and why the place is named after him but the place is truly wonderful, it’s a real gem. These are karst caves - they formed by themselves. The caves are quite large and have a passageway between them. The highlight is that you will have to get there by passing under gently murmuring streams of spring water, which, shimmering in the sun, flow down the mighty rock covered with delicate moss of different colors,” says Artem. The only problem? No camera in the world will convey the sensations you will feel and the beauty you will see.

About the climate:

che sara sara yacht owner

“The climate is very comfortable here. If we compare it to neighboring Krasnodar Krai, it’s much more pleasant and almost everyone can easily deal with it. Even on a hot summer day you won’t get that unbearable humidity and in the mountains it’s very nice. So if you’re sweltering in +37°C (98°F) in the cities, just drive 40 minutes and you’ll be in your own little paradise with the cleanest mountain air and a reasonable coolness surrounded by centuries old mighty pines,” Artem continues.

In winters, the mountains usually get a fair amount of snow, which allows for great skiing/snowboarding trips. However, lately, due to climatic changes, snowfall has become less predictable and there have recently been winters where there was much less snowfall than usual. The average temperature can dip to about -8°C (18°F) during the coldest month (January).

During the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn), the weather is still pleasant – especially if compared to some other parts of Russia – with daytime temperatures hovering around +12-15°C (54-59°F) in April and October.

How many days are enough and how to plan the trip?

che sara sara yacht owner

The more days you can manage to reserve for this trip, the better. Artem has been guiding tours on a daily basis around the Caucasus for more than 3 years and even he admits that he’s not seen it all; the sheer amount of sights seems to have no limits. Everything that is at least within a radius of 100 km cannot be seen in a week. But even if you go for a long weekend you will manage to get a feel for the spirit and the beauty of the Karachay-Cherkessia part of the Caucasus mountains.

“If you’re considering day trips without an overnight stay, there are a lot of choices. All the mountains are simply overflowing with lakes located at an altitude of 2,000–3,000 meters above sea level with amazingly clear, glacial water. Caves are totally a separate topic! There are so many of them that it is simply unrealistic to list and visit everything and their beauty and power cannot be described. You can start with the small and the nearest and continue according to ascending levels of beauty and remoteness from villages and auls (a type of fortified village found throughout the Caucasus mountains and Central Asia). These places are also divided into different categories, where you can go on foot and those to which you can drive up by car. Again, driving a car can be divided into several categories - this is full asphalt, off-road and wild off-road.”

When thinking of where to stay, Artem recommends staying in Kislovodsk in the neighboring Stavropol Krai as the capital of Karachay-Cherkessia (Cherkessk) is not as developed in terms of tourist infrastructure as the cities of the Caucasian Mineral Waters, which have been welcoming tourists for more than two centuries. Kislovodsk is the perfect base if you want to go on day trips to the numerous places of interest in Karachay-Cherkessia (the “border” between the two regions is a 20-minute drive) and have a wider range of entertainment and dining options when you’re back in the evenings.

News, notes and thoughts:

11 January, 2021   / The Kochubeevskaya wind farm with an installed capacity of 210 MW, the largest in Russia, has been commissioned in Stavropol Krai. With a total area of about 200 hectares, it includes 84 wind turbines, each 150 meters high, the length of the blades - 50 meters.

History of Stavropol Krai

The most ancient archaeological finds date back to the 4th millennium BC. The territory of the present Stavropol region was successively part of the state of the Scythians (the 7th - 5th centuries BC), Sarmatians (the 3rd century BC - the 3rd century AD), Huns (the 4th - 5th centuries AD).

Later, from 620 to 969, this territory was part of the ancient state called the Khazar Khaganate. Approximately in the 8th century, with the weakening of the Khazar Kaganate, the medieval state of the Alans appeared here. In 1238-1239, a significant part of the plain Alania was captured by the Mongols, and this state as a political entity ceased to exist.

In 1556, the Russian troops took Astrakhan and opened the way to the North Caucasus and the Caspian Sea. In Ciscaucasia, the interests of Russia, the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and Iran collided.

In 1777, according to the decree of Catherine II, the Azov-Mozdok defensive line was founded, which gave rise to colonization of the Ciscaucasia and the North Caucasus. The territory of the Stavropol region became part of Astrakhan oblast. In November 1777, the fortress called Stavropolskaya was founded. In 1782, about 500 retired soldiers lived there.

More historical facts…

In 1785, in connection with the development of Ciscaucasia, the Caucasian guberniya (province) was created that included the Caucasian and Astrakhan regions. Since that time, Stavropol officially became one of the six county-level towns of the Caucasus region.

With the development of the Ciscaucasia, Stavropol was gaining an increasing importance as an important trade and transit center. It became a kind of the main gate of the Caucasus. In 1822, the Caucasian province was transformed into an oblast and Stavropol became its center. After the defeat of the Decembrist uprising, a lot of its participants were sent here. In 1837 - 1841, Mikhail Lermontov, exiled to the Caucasus, visited Stavropol several times.

In 1847, the Caucasian oblast was reformed into Stavropol gubernia. With the formation of the Kuban and Terek Cossack regions and the end of the Caucasian War, the military-political and economic importance of Stavropol significantly reduced.

In 1919, the Stavropol province was occupied by the Bolsheviks and included in the territory of the North Caucasian Soviet Republic. As a result of the Second Kuban campaign the region went under the control of the Volunteer Army.

In October 1924, the North Caucasian region was formed and Stavropol gubernia was reformed into a district within the region. On January 10, 1934, the North Caucasian Krai was divided into the Azovo-Chernomorsky and North Caucasian. The town of Pyatigorsk became the center of North Caucasian Krai. In March 1936, North Caucasian Krai was reformed and, on its territory, Ordzhonikidze Krai with the center in Ordzhonikidze (Stavropol) was formed.

During the Second World War, from August 1942 to January 1943, the region was occupied by the German troops. In 1943, Ordzhonikidze Krai was renamed Stavropol Krai. In December 1956, the first part of the Stavropol-Moscow gas pipeline with a length of 1,300 km was commissioned (at that time, it was the longest gas pipeline in Europe).

During the 1970s-1980s, 56 new enterprises were opened in the region, among them the Prikumsky Plastics Plant - the largest chemical plant in the region, four power units at the Stavropol power station, and new capacities at the Nevinnomyssk enterprise “Azot”.

On July 3, 1991, Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region withdrew from Stavropol Krai and became the Karachay-Cherkess Soviet Socialist Republic. On April 21, 1992, it became the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia of the Russian Federation.

  • 45.05 41.983333 1 Stavropol — this capital city is located in a particularly mountainous area of the region and was one of Russia's most important bases during the Russian conquest of the Caucasus ; former home to Mikhail Gorbachev and it has a particularly nice urban park
  • 44.200833 43.1125 5 Mineralnye Vody — a health spa city named for its "Mineral Waters" at the edge of the; a common flight destination for visitors to the North Caucasus

Other destinations

Stavropol Krai contains a large number of Caucasian health spas/sanatoria, which Russians have visited for over 200 years to treat various ailments (and just to escape the northern climate of Moscow and Saint Petersburg . As such, the region has been home to many of Russia's most prominent figures, including writers such as A.S. Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov, whose works have embedded the Pyatigorsk region into the national consciousness. A great read for anyone visiting the region is Lermontov's short novel, A Hero of Our Time , which is set in various areas in the south of the Krai.

Stavropol Krai is also notable for its exceptionally diverse climactic and topographic diversity. The environments range from sand deserts, to mud flats, to steppe, to forest, to mountains, to permafrost!

Russian is the soup of the day.

By rail, most visitors will arrive at the regional transit hub of Stavropol .

Domestic flights to Stavropol ( STW   IATA )and to Mineralnye Vody ( MRV   IATA ) (which is closer to Mount Elbrus, the North Caucasus , and the health spas) are common around Russia.

  • Mountain Beshtau Uranium Mines (RU) . 238 kilometers of mines inside Mount Beshtau 7 km from Pyatigorsk city. Closed in ~ 1971, but explored by diggers today. The site guides offers adventure descend into the mines with ropes and equipment. ( updated Mar 2019 )

Because of its proximity to the conflict in Chechnya , the security situation is very poor in Stavropol Krai. While kidnappings are unlikely, there have been fairly regular bombings of public areas and official facilities in the southern cities and in Stavropol over the years. While a visitor is fairly unlikely to be victim to such terroristic attacks, the resulting crackdown has led to strict and unfortunately corrupt policing of the area — a visitor is quite likely to be harassed for bribes.

Stavropol Krai is the nearest “island of freedom” (in every sense) for residents of neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia, who often visit this region for entertainment purposes (alcohol, nightclubs), therefore, it is not uncommon to run into them in entertainment establishments and at night on the streets. They are often armed with knives and pistols. To prevent conflicts, it is better to refrain from reacting to possible provocations on their part and simply walk away from them.

In Stavropol krai there are three GSM operators (MTS, Beeline, Megafon), one 3G-UMTS operator (Beeline) and one CDMA operator on 800 MHz frequency (RusSDO) and they often have offers that give you a SIM card for free or at least very cheap. If you are planning to stay a while and to keep in touch with Stavropolean and other North-Caucasus, South-Russians people, then you should consider buying a local SIM card instead of going on roaming. If you buy a SIM card from a shop you'll need your passport for identification. It only takes five minutes to do the paperwork and it will cost less than $10.

Stavropol Krai is a common jumping off point for tourists venturing into the North Caucasus . Basically any city in the region can be reached via minibus or taxi from Mineralnye Vody.
