Carinthia VII underway after a significant refit

Growing up in the 1980’s as a rabid-teen-age-green-wearing Boston Celtics fan, I really loathed when Magic Johnson would smile, look into the camera and say, ”It’s SHOWTIME!” in interviews during the NBA Finals against my beloved Celtics.

But even back then, I had to admit he was right. In fact, I knew something special was going to happen every time the pre-game announcers hyped up the Lakers special brand of “Showtime” during those epic battles. The anticipation was glorious!

The anticipation for the start of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show is high

And now that I’ve seen the preliminary list of some of the yachts that will be headlining the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show next week, I’m feeling a similar type of anticipation for the “Superyacht Showtime” that attracts many of the world’s largest superyachts and many of the world’s most wealthy people to the Monaco Yacht Show every year.

In fact, I have a feeling that year’s Monaco Yacht Show is going to be epic, so here’s an insiders preview of some of the largest yachts that will be there. Because it’s almost…“Showtime!”

For me, the queen of the show might just be 318-foot-long Carinthia VII that was designed by Tim Heywood and built by Lürssen in 2002. I say this because Carinthia VII has been widely regarded as one of the world’s first true megayachts.

This year, Fraser and Lürssen are keen to show off the results of her extensive refit. The work includes redesigned exterior decks with new lounge and living areas and a new, 39-foot-long pool and fitness room.

The main saloon aboard Carinthia VII

“I am very proud that after building Carinthia VII , we have now been able to participate in her new lease on life with an extensive refit,” says Lürssen Managing Partner Peter Lürssen. “She remains a very particular vessel and is a testament to the solidity of our German engineering and manufacture.”

And in other related news, the charter managers at Fraser are happy to report Carinthia VII is also newly available for charter for the first time in her 21-year history.

The spa aboard Carinthia VII

“When speaking with clients after their charters, it is fascinating to listen to which aspects of their experience resonate with them. For most it is the crew, the food, the toys and the locations that always ate highly,” says Mark Duncan, Fraser Director of Business Development & Marketing.

The Beach Club

“For some though, it is very much about the yacht itself – the layouts, design, space, features and ambiance. We suspect Carinthia VII is going to be as much a part of those after-charter dinner conversations as the unforgettable moments we know she is going to help create for those who decide to book something exceptional.”

Phoenix 2 underway

When it comes to memorable superyachts, Phoenix 2 will always stand out simply because she’s nearly 300 feet long. And I know I’m not the only one who thinks her distinctive interior and exterior that exudes art deco opulence is the absolute definition of superyacht luxury.

Phoenix 2's distinctive art deco interior was designed by Winch Design

Designed by Winch Design and built by Lürssen in 2010, she’s also known for voluminous interior and exterior spaces across several decks for relaxing or entertaining.

Dining for 12 aboard Phoenix 2

Meanwhile, with accommodations that include: a beauty salon, movie theatre, spa, elevator, beach club and gym, she has everything you’d expect a superyacht of this caliber to have. Phoenix 2 is currently being listed for sale with Cecil Wright and Burgess . And oh yes, she can be yours for a just north of $130 million.

Savannah was launched by Feadship in 2015

With her distinctive bow, clean lines, and elegant profile, I’ve always admired the looks of the 274-foot-long Savannah . But since she was also built by Feadship with a pioneering electro-mechanical propulsion platform that was created to reduce fuel consumption by 30 percent, in 2015! I’ve always been impressed with how she was designed to be “sustainable” way before “sustainability” became such as sought after trait. In fact, she’s credited with being the first hybrid superyacht.

And of course, Savannah also features four massive decks where guests can relax in well-designed spaces that move from the inside out. While the interior, designed by CG Design is elegantly modern that showcase video walls, a significant art collection and massive windows that offer breathtaking views.

Bilgin Yachts's Leona underway

With its distinctive red and white exterior design, Leona, the 263-foot-long Bilgin Yacht that was built in Turkey and features naval architecture and exterior design by Antalya, Turkey-based Unique Yacht Design and H2 Yacht Design for the interior living areas.

“Leona is different in many ways to her sistership Tatiana,” says Jonny Horsfield of H2 Yacht Design. “Although the general layout is essentially identical and the yachts offer accommodation for up to 10 guests, Leona has more emphasis on space with cabin numbers being reduced in order to provide larger accommodation. On the main deck, Tatiana’s four guest cabin-layout has been replaced with two generous VIP cabins with his and her dressing rooms and bathrooms, while on the lower deck there are two cabins instead of three and this layout creates space for additional storage, a larger area for a movie theater, a gym and a sauna.”

The pool is cool aboard the Billgin 236

The owner’s deck sees the biggest change with the superstructure extending aft providing a palatial owner’s suite. Not to mention that a private lounge area is on the forward deck with an access to the owner’s exterior pool. Emrecan Özgün, the founder of Unique Yacht Design, finds this part of the yacht especially sexy and sleek and he describes it as following: “In terms of exterior lines I really love the front deck because it reminds of a real bullet when seen from above.”

Kenosho underway

The 246-foot-long, award-winning Kenshō was built by Admiral Yachts of the Italian Sea Group to maximize life on the water. And it does that using asymmetry, integrated outside living areas and spaces in unexpected places.

Kenshō’s interior spaces, connected by a central elevator and feature staircase are designed to feel even more spacious with lofty ceiling heights, large windows, and exceptionally wide walkways which connect the different living areas.

The swim deck features a glass-fronted, sea-level swimming pool, and plenty of space to dive into the water from the swim platform, or simply sprawl out on one of the sofas. The sun deck, crowned by a unique skylight on the top and offering a glass-fronted Jacuzzi and island bar, has forward and aft zones that are connected by one of the yacht’s characteristic wide walkways.

And the living room takes its inspiration from a ship’s wheelhouse with floor to ceiling glass offering spectacular panoramas forward.

Stay tuned for more from Monaco.

Although the amount of the actual transaction is not officially known, its sale was the highest of 2022 in this sector. The 2023 version of the Carinthia VII boasts a refit, in particular a redesign of the outer decks to create new lounges and spaces.

The Biggest Yachts at Monaco Yacht Show 2023

Isaac taylor.

It’s not how big your super-yacht is, it’s how you use it. If you’re going to go anywhere in the world to see floating palaces it would have to be Monaco. I’d say any major center in New Zealand with all the flooding we’ve been having recently but we don’t have any palaces despite what pre flood property prices might indicate so Monaco it is.

Let’s take a quick tour of some of the biggest boats at the show this year and what they have to offer. Super Models not included.

Carinthia VII – 318 Footer

biggest yacht in monaco 2023

Clocking in at 3,600 gross tons with 6 decks and a 16m beam the Carinthia VII is the largest Super-yacht we know of on the quay at Monaco this year. It has a private owners deck with separate daytime and night-time areas and stateroom, a VIP stateroom adjacent and six extra staterooms on the main deck for guests.

It’s got everything you’d expect to pack into 318 feet of luxury including a wellness spa and elevator across four fo the decks. It can manage accommodation for 14 guests and 26 crew. It can range up to 5,000 nm cruising 18 knots, or a max speed of 25 knots if you’re in a hurry to get anywhere.

Phoenix 2 – 300 Footer

biggest yacht in monaco 2023

If you have a cool NZ$222 Million on you then the Phoenix 2 could be yours. It was first built in 2010 and recently got a refit in 2019. It can fit 14 guests across 7 staterooms. If anyone needs to do a runner in a hurry there are two touch and go helicopter platforms. Personally I’m here for the indoor outdoor cinemas and swimming pool with a separate jacuzzi. Who needs Waiwera anymore anyway. Interior designs are callbacks to art deco and features a winter garden, ballroom, and spiral staircase leading to the upper decks. It’s also decked out with a jacuzzi lounge, gym, beauty salon and cinema. The owners suite keeps up the tempo with wraparound views accessible via a glass spiral staircase. The full featured bathroom is decked in marble and a concealable walk-in wardrobe if the owner wants to keep their kit there but rent the boat out in the off-season. Designed by Tim Heywood this isn’t even the largest yacht he’s designed. The largest is named A+ (formerly Topaz) and clocks in at 482 Feet

Savannah – 274 Footer

biggest yacht in monaco 2023

Savannah throws out many of the usual flourishes found on your standard super-yacht, forging it’s own path instead. It’s the largest hybrid motoryacht launched as well as being the largest ship to every have a “full metal jacket” of metallic sea-foam-green paint from top to waterline according to Feadship. It has it’s own elevator connecting its four decks as well as an underwater lounge. Many of the main areas are open to the sea, including the Main-deck salon which slides away into a pool deck and circular lounge outdoor space. The gym also looks out to the sea with slide glass paneling. The interiors are a collage of retail design spaces with inspiration coming from Christian Dior, Kenzo and Virgin Megastores thanks to Cristina Gherardi Design.

Aware Yacht – 262 Footer

biggest yacht in monaco 2023

If you’re looking to get the most out of a small space ask a Dutch farmer, failing being able to find one of those ask a Dutch Yacht Designer, namely Sinot which has made the most out of every square inch of the 262-foot long Aware Yacht. That isn’t to say they haven’t created ridiculously cavernous opulent spaces. The bridge is a sprawling 1,500 square foot epicenter. A glass encased pavilion leads to the wheelhouse, dining area nad a library. The beach club has 10-foot ceilings and sliding glass partitions for augmenting the space. Why sunbath outside when inside is this accommodating. It can accommodate 10 guests in four lavish cabins

Leona – 263 Footer

biggest yacht in monaco 2023

Bilgin Yachts have created a super-yacht for a secretive rich lister who has a penchant for the absurd. This is the largest yacht made in Turkey and apparently the 263 foot long Leona has an entertainment system in the ambient area that is so complex that it’s controlled by 100 iPads and includes a projection screen on the ceiling. That sounds more like a tech issue than a testament to how great the system is. I’m not sure I quite believe that, but moving on.

Checking off the list is an extravagant owners suite with it’s own private lounge and exterior pool. 2 VIP guest suites with his and hers bathrooms ensure the guests are in no-less luxurious accommodation. On Tatiana, Leona’s older sister ship, these 2 VIP rooms are split into 4 smaller guest rooms. The interior is all gold inlays, onyx and marble.

Engine-wise we’re looking at a maximum speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots powered by 2,560 kW twin engines.

The yacht-spotter's guide to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Every year, Monaco’s Grand Prix pulls in some of the fleet’s finest superyachts for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled F1 action and A-lister events in the heart of the principality. Yachts moored stern to the circuit have a premium vantage point over the cars tearing around the track, while superyachts at anchor can enjoy all the Formula One buzz with the added benefit of privacy and seclusion.

BOAT takes a closer look at the superyachts spotted near the event...

Renaissance

Length : 111.9m Builder : Freire

Renaissance is the largest private yacht built in Spain and one of the world's most expensive charter yachts . Which is quite the feat for Freire, a commercial shipyard that has built only one private yacht in the past. With 7,200GT to play with, her list of amenities include a sushi bar, a dedicated hair and beauty salon, a ballet bar with a mirror for stretching and two cinemas – one indoor, one outdoor. The owner's deck is described as "palatial" and comes with its own a media room, a lounge with bar and dining and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi for six.

Length : 52.1m Builder : Sanlorenzo

Spotted pulling into port with a Bugatti on the aft, Seven Sins is the perfect yacht for soaking up the Formula One action. She is part of Sanlorenzo's hugely successful 52Steel series, with features including a glass-bottomed pool on the aft that floods the beach club below with light. Her palatial interior design offers plenty of space for kicking back and watching the races in a more relaxed setting and her sharp Officina Italiana Design exterior is sure to attract attention in Monaco harbour.

Length : 90m Builder : Benetti

Lionheart was launched in 2016 as the shipyard's largest build to date, though she was surpassed by the 107-metre Mar (ex Lana ) four years later. She was the third yacht to be ordered from Benetti by the same owner, Sir Philip Green. While her curvy exterior and private balconies will be visible to those visiting Port Hercule this weekend, interiors have always been shrouded in secrecy. It is known that  Stefano Natucci  collaborated with Benetti on the exterior design and Green & Mingarelli Design  is responsible for the interior design.

Fountainhead

Length : 87.8m   Builder : Feadship

Created with family use in mind, Fountainhead features a recreation room and library that can be converted into cabins to supplement the six existing guest cabins and owner's suite. She was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and Sinot Yacht Design , though "a signature blend of art, antiques and aesthetics" by Belgian artist Axel Vervoordt are also displayed throughout.  Leisure highlights include a fully-equipped gym with health club, a contra-flow swimming pool and a tender garage that houses wave runners, kayaks, surfboard and diving equipment, among others. The superyacht is named after the famous novel by Ayn Rand.

Coral Ocean

Length : 72.6m Builder : Lürssen

A World Superyacht Award winner, Coral Ocean earned the judges' commendation following a sensitive, multi-million refit that converted the heritage vessel into a successful charter platform. All deck spaces were upgraded, including a reimagined sundeck that now houses a glass-sided spa pool, sunbathing and observation deck and a central deckhouse with a television lounge, dining area and bar. Coral Ocean was one of the largest launches of 1994 and her secrecy for the first two decades of her life solidified her as an icon for the German shipyard. She is owned by Australian garbage waste disposal giant Ian Malouf.

Length : 72m   Builder : Lürssen

Delivered in 2006, Titania  (ex Apoise ) was put up for auction by her owner in 2010 and was snapped up for €33.75 million – roughly half the estimated value – by Phones4U tycoon John Caudwell. He then went on to refit, lengthen and rename the superyacht, which he discusses in an exclusive interview with BOAT International . Designed by Espen Øino and Francois Zuretti , the Lürssen was the star yacht in season six of The Crown and is a popular charter yacht. No wonder, as she sports a beach club that can be converted into a nightclub, an onboard masseuse and beautician and an impressive array of watersports – including a waterpark and a 12.7-metre slide.

Length : 70m Builder : Royal Denship

Force Blue first hit the water in 2002 as the 63.3-metre Big Roi , a trawler-style expedition yacht that has since been refitted to varying degrees. The most recent work was done at Lusben in 2022 and involved a seven-metre stern extension to allow for a large, wrap-around swim platform. The main deck was extended in the process as well. Design highlights include a black-tiled spa (with heated massage table), a cinema, a barbecue and dining area that turns into a disco and a dining room that doubles as a conference space. An elevator serves all decks.

Length : 67.5m Builder : Icon Yachts

The flagship of the Dutch shipyard, Loon (ex Icon ) is now anchored in Port Hercule where she is likely to cause another social media sensation . She was delivered in 2010 to a design by RWD , with clean, contemporary interiors by Studio Linse . A raised main deck pool is one of her many highlights with two panels of glass that filter natural light into the beach club below. A bar, gym, massage room and sauna are also found at this level. Loon was sold to a new owner in April 2023, after which she joined the charter fleet with IYC .

Length : 66m   Builder : Oceanco

AHS has undergone numerous name changes (she was sold and renamed mostly recently in January ) but started life as Dilbar in 2005. A successful charter yacht, she can be easily distinguished in port by her classic canoe stern. An interior by the late Alberto Pinto provides accommodation across eight cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite with its own lounge and adjoining private office. Other highlights include an outdoor cinema, a beamy sundeck with 19,000-litre pool and a helipad that transforms into a sun lounge.

Length : 49.9m Builder : Zepter

The Croatian yard's first superyacht offering, JoyMe is usually berthed in Cap d’Ail but has been sighted in Monaco for the past two Grands Prix. She’s one of the most recognisable yachts at the event, with her custom red and white exterior and unusual eye motif – said to be the eyes of the commissioning owner’s daughter. Leisure highlights include a Pop Art-inspired interior by  Marijana Radovic , a sundeck with a 3.5-metre Jacuzzi and a lower deck arranged with a gym, Finnish sauna and Hammam spa with sea views. Accommodation is across five cabins, including the "VIP deck" owner's cabin which has a walk-in bathroom, lounge and private sunbathing platform on the bow.

Length : 45.2m Builder : Royal Hakvoort

The most recent delivery on the list, Milele is one of this year's World Superyacht Award winners . According to the judges, she stood out thanks to her "incredible build quality” and surprising spaces on board. Most notable of these is the innovative foredeck garage, which stores a submarine and crane, and has a full entertainment suite with a large television screen built into its hatch. She was designed inside and out by Omega Architects with an efficient hull design by Van Oossanen Naval Architects .

The Monaco Yacht Show returns this year for its 32nd edition with a stellar lineup of yachts. The newly refitted 319-foot Carinthia VII and the head-turning 312-foot Kismet are two of the largest yachts confirmed to attend, while this year’s debuts include a dozen-plus new launches that may not be as large as some of the brokerage and charter gigayachts at the show but are still an impressive group in terms of design.

The newbies also seem to be broken out into distinctive colors this year, with the 262-foot scarlet-red Leona being the largest launch at the show, while the 174-foot Jewels , with its sky-blue hull will also stand out. Damen’s Bad Company Support has neon-pink lettering on the side, while Anjelif has a gold exterior, and Grey has a black superstructure and light-gray hull.

The Monaco event is the biggest yachting show to take place throughout Europe and the marquis event in the superyacht world. The organizers have been working hard to promote environmental innovations and educational trends taking place within yachting. The show will have design and innovation hubs, sustainability hub, and an adventure area. Of course, the big stars will be the fleet of 120 superyachts in Port Hercules.

Here are the 10 launches that we will definitely be visiting at the show.

‘Leona’ | Bilgin Yachts

The 262-foot Leona is Bilgin Yachts’s largest delivery to date. Even amid the glamour of Port Hercules, the full custom yacht will be hard to miss, thanks to a bright-scarlet hull that has earned the yacht the nickname “the Red Bullet.” The exterior is designed by Unique Yacht Design, and the interior is by H2 Yacht Design. The largest yacht to debut in Monaco this year, Leona is part of the Bilgin 263 series. It has the same lifting transom and large beach club pool as its sistership Tatiana . Another wow-factor feature includes a pair of Greek statues covered in fiber optics that give the impression of a star-studded night sky.

‘Alchemy’ | Rossinavi

With a design that was developed entirely over Zoom, Rossinavi’s tri-deck 216-foot Alchemy was built for an owner with a penchant for space. The result is more than 3,500 square feet of deck space, which holds large outdoor dining areas mated with dedicated bronzing and socializing areas and an on-deck Jacuzzi. The design employs Philippe Briand’s signature Vitruvius hull, while the contemporary interior was by Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design.

‘Anjelif’ | Columbus Yachts

The 164-foot Anjelif is defined by its many technical innovations, including hybrid diesel-electric propulsion, an onboard sanitization system for the elimination of airborne viruses, and a touch-and-go helipad at the bow that converts into an open-air cinema. The all-aluminum, four-deck yacht delivered by Italian shipyard Columbus Yachts also boasts a gold exterior by Marco Casali of Too Design. The Italian studio used natural and sustainable materials to define the interior. Amenities include a gym on the main deck, a sauna, and treatment rooms.

‘Jewels’ | Turquoise Yachts

Turquoise Yachts’s 174-foot Jewels , with its sky-blue hull, will no doubt to turn heads wherever it ventures. The exterior design is the result of a first-time collaboration between the Turkish builder and Miami-based DeBasto Design. The interior is by British studio H2 Yacht Design to accommodates 12 guests. The boat, which has 720 gross tonnes of volume, boasts a large sundeck with spa pool, sunpads, bar, and socializing area.

‘Grey’ | Tankoa

Sporting a jet-black superstructure and light-gray hull, the aptly named Grey by Tankoa Yachts enjoys the same Paszkowski-designed profile as its sisterships Kinda and Olokun . But it’s the large glass-sided pool on the foredeck, paired with an outdoor cinema screen and integrated surround-sound speakers, that grab all the attention. A fold-down transom with extended swim platform, a beach club with side sea terraces, and a large sun deck with a second pool complete the 164-foot superyacht package.

‘X-Space’ | Sanlorenzo

biggest yacht in monaco 2023

X-Space by Sanlorenzo takes the use of onboard glass to a new level. Full-height windows, sliding-glass panes and “glass walls” in the guest cabins fill the interior with natural light. One of the yacht’s five decks is dedicated entirely to the owner, comprising multiple living areas, an office, and large master suite leading directly onto a private terrace at the bow. The exterior features include a 323-square-foot sunbathing deck and a swimming pool. Designed by Zuccon International Project, the 144-foot yacht is one of the Italian yard’s most anticipated launches to date.

‘Fancy’ | Nautor’s Swan

As the first hull in Nautor’s Swan’s 108 series, the 115-foot Fancy is one of a handful of sailing yachts making its world premiere at Monaco this year. Described by the shipyard as “the first in a new generation of Maxi Swans,” and sitting neatly between its Swan 98 and Swan 120 flagship, it mates a carbon hull with a sweeping and uncluttered resin-infused deck. The exterior design is by Micheletti + Partners, with naval architecture by German Frers.

‘Ace’ | Conrad

The 145-foot yacht Ace built by Conrad Shipyard is the largest superyacht to come out of Poland. Its Reymond Langton exterior is defined by a “rolling wave” superstructure and an 82-foot sundeck with cinema screen and recessed infinity pool. Commissioned by a Swiss owner who requested an interior with an “Italian soul,” the full-custom boat sleeps 10 guests in five suites, with accommodations for a crew of nine. It marks the first hull in the Polish shipyard’s C144S series.

‘ArtExplorer’ | Perini Navi

When Robb Report reported on Frédéric Jousset’s idea for a floating gallery in 2021 , the art enthusiast’s vision was still a dream. Now it’s a 154-foot reality called ArtExplorer , debuting at Monaco this year. Built by Perini Navi to a design by naval architects Axel de Beaufort and Guillaume Verdier, it is the largest aluminum sailing catamaran in the world. Following the museum boat’s premiere at Monaco, it will sail the world, hosting immersive art exhibitions curated in collaboration with the Louvre Museum in Jousset’s bid to “democratize the arts.”

‘Bad Company Support’ | Damen

The 175-foot Bad Company Support is the first hull in Damen Yachting’s YS53 support vessel series. Commissioned by American tech entrepreneur Anthony Hsieh, the support vessel will be the largest boat in the serial yachtsman’s 10-strong fleet of vessels used for sportfishing expeditions and marine conservation. It’s also his first new build. Sporting an attention-grabbing neon pink name on its side, the support vessel has a 5,000 nautical mile range, a 15-ton deck crane, and IMO Tier III-compliant engines.
