Info on 38' Bentley/Ingrid Cutter Hi, All My family and I had fun looking at '78 Bentley Cutter: http://www.yachtworld.com/core/list...=&hosturl=thesailinglife&&ywo=thesailinglife& If you've never heard of a "Bentley," don't feel bad. Basically, it's a 38 foot Ingrid design that was done by the Emerald Bay Trading Company in Taiwan. Most of the Ingrids (kit and complete) were done by Ingrid Bluewater Boatworks (in Woodinville, Washington, I believe). So, I know about the pros/cons of Ingrids (owner finished ones can be real iffy). However, I don't know anything about the ones made by Emerald Bay Trading Company in Taiwan. Anyone with information about the quality of work done by that yard in 1978? Our simply pass-through suggested that the interior and exterior work seemed relatively solid and well-done, especially when compared to the "cave" of an owner-finished one we once went through. Thanks! Jim H

One good resource would be the Practical Sailor, two-volume, Boat Buying guide. It will probably have the real dirt on the boat...both good and bad.

Jim, Seems like a lot of money for an odd-ball boat. It looks to me like the designer and builder were practicing at yacht design and did everthing ad-hoc. For instance, where's the other half of the engine - 35 HP in 27,000 is frighteningly underpowered. A three cylinder engine?? Teak decks and made in Taiwan in the '70s - sounds like a perfect storm for financial ruin. If this boat really speaks to you, be sure to get an exptremely thorough and expereienced surveyor, and pay him or her for the full day, they'll need it. Good luck.

Jim, I would encourage you to dig into the boat further if it's suitable for your needs (which should be about offshore cruising with this boat, not day sailing). We would all like to find reliable 'generic' descriptions of boat models/brands but, especially with older Taiwan boats as you have stated, this just isn't realistic. E.g. some folks love their Force 50 ketches from this same era, yet I've heard of one case where the boat was terribly tender and, ultimately, when the owner was using a grinder on the hull, all the ballast poured out in the form of sand. Sometimes a given model was provided with lead ballast, other times it was iron punchings with concrete. WRT the listing you gave us, I'm not even sure I believe it's an 'Ingrid' hull; where did the Taiwan company get the plugs from (hull & deck)? My guess is that, since the company was probably not well capitalized up front, they found plugs with a similar hull form - after all, this from the gala 'double-ender' days of Westsails - and labeled it accordingly. Also, boats 3 decades old typically adopt much of the personality of their owners over time, as systems are changed/replaced/added. I honestly don't think it will prove helpful - for both these reasons: Taiwan's general rep of that era and the age of the boat - and it may even be misleading to associate this boat with these model/brand of boats generally. Having said all that, IF this kind of boat serves your needs, I'd suggest you dig further with the broker. It's very presentable. The engine is indeed smaller than expected from today's perspective, but that MD17 was very typical for that kind of boat back then. The MD2B was common in W32's, after all. Teak decks an issue? Absolutely. OTOH they are removeable, and you can do that job yourself (which you should assume is on the horizon). Does the boat have issues? Yes - e.g. I'm not sure how long I'd like to live with that huge barn door rudder and tiller; I'd consider adding a trim tab. Similarly, while double enders used to be seen as the only viable stern on an ocean cruising boat, that's certainly not true any longer...and I wouldn't like to live with the absence of buoyancy & storage back aft. I'm also not a fan of the sea washing down the side deck and right under my own 'stern', while not having an ergonomic backrest to support me. But these kinds of things can be addressed or worked around - e.g. I saw a very functional W32 cockpit a few years ago, with comfy back rests, seawater being diverted off the side decks, and overall a great cruising cockpit. Ultimately - even with a thorough survey, given the limitations on what you can expect from a surveyor - there's inherent risk in considering a boat like this: old and of uncertain ancestry. OTOH that should also affect the price being asked. If she's your kind of boat, I'd say dig deeper. And if you buy her, shim up that starboard table leaf.<g> Good luck to you! Jack

Jack, thanks for the thoughtful and kind reply. As for the Bentley, I've also wondered where the hull plug came from, since the Ingrids were made for years after the Bentley was made, so it wasn't like the molds were sold and shipped to Taiwan. You may be exactly right that it's compared with an Ingrid simply because it resembles one, and now I want to go back and stare at it to find clues about similarities and differences, just for fun. I think it's funny that so many of the Taiwan hulls have mysterious origins. Generally, we don't have much interest in the double-enders, other than going aboard when possible to see the quality of work and what decisions were made in terms of rigging and interior. Aesthetically, I think some were well-done, and the surprise with this boat was the overall execution and the appearance of both moderate use and sensible maintenance by previous owners. When that was combined with the mystery of it's origins, I thought it would be fun to find out more. We often will walk offshore boats in the $60k range, simply because we have a beach lot we could liquidate fairly quickly for about that sum, but overall condition can vary radically. Having read your posts here and on other boards, I have to admit that we plan to visit a Pearson 424 Ketch someday. There's one in Washington that just came back from 3 years in the South Pacific that might be a good candidate for a walk-through, even though the asking price is about $40k over the value of our beach lot. Basically, if my family takes a break for some cruising, it will be a serious break. We're not interested in living aboard for the sake of living aboard, and my wife is even more agressive than I on the offshore objectives. So, like many others, I'm looking at angles that might provide a strong boat "with issues" that we can handle from a repair/rebuild perspective that won't be pennywise/pound foolish in terms of time or funds, and this is no mean feat. When I mention that we have two kids, many think nothing less than a 52' Farrington Ketch would do, but we've always been a small house, car, living space type of family. In terms of "angles," we're considering cosmetic and name recognition issues. A cosmetically blistered Valiant 40 might be interesting, or possibly a Taiwan-made boat that checks out in a way much more sensibly than reputation would suggest. The Bentley's displacement is too much for us to get excited about it, just as the size limitations of a Nic 32 we saw last year couldn't be overcome. It's an education, however, seeing and understanding the different trade-offs. Thanks again for the reply. Jim H

Review of Bently 38

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The Bently 38 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.71 - 1.81 meter (5.61 - 5.91 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Bently 38 is 1.52, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Bently 38 is about 233 kg/cm, alternatively 1307 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 233 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1307 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 26m 2 (279 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Emeryville Liveaboard Profile: Emery Cove’s Abe & Kelsey preparing for adventure!

' src=

The benefits of living on our Emeryville Marina include stunning sunsets, relatively reasonable rents and a community of folks from all walks of life and income levels. For some, it’s about frugality. For others it’s about a connection to the sea and a sense of freedom and adventure.

Abe Martin & Kelsey Vicars are two-year Emery Cove Yacht Harbor residents where they’ve lived aboard their 41′ sailboat ‘Dawn Treader’ named after a ship in the The Chronicles of Narnia fiction series.

bentley 38 sailboat

“I love sailing … but even more than I love sailing, I have a love for the natural world,” says the 29-year-old Martin. “Sailing brings me closer to nature and it makes me feel alive.”

Martin appreciates the proximity of Emery Cove to an urban environment like Emeryville. “It makes me feel more connected to the elements and separate from mainstream society, though not entirely disconnected from its invaluable infrastructure.”

Martin is employed by Emery Cove helping with the ongoing dock replacement project. As an employee and renter, he lives under strict rules set by an HOA including a zero-tolerance on open consumption of alcohol.

“I never dreamed I would be living on a boat,” added Vicars, who is employed as a barista in Oakland. Vicars is learning how to tattoo with the hopes of making an eventual career change. “It’s like camping, or ‘ glamping’. ”

Vicars and Martin note daily challenges of being a liveaboard including occasional power outages, cooking in a confined space and the DIY sanitation services.

bentley 38 sailboat

Slip rentals range from about $400 to $700 per month depending on the size and location. Emery Cove provides onshore amenities including, bathroom, trash, laundry, showers and a public lounge area with a DVD and book library.

Obtaining liveaboard status can be challenging and Martin says it helps to know someone to help guide them through the process. Liveaboards are strictly regulated and approved by the California Bay Conservation & Development Commission (BCDC). Emery Cove caps the total of liveaboard slips at 6%.

Permanent liveaboard status is at the discretion of the Harbor Master and is not specific to any particular boat slip according to Emery Cove’s FAQs . Weekend use and periodic overnight occupancy by the slip owner or a guest is generally ok.

bentley 38 sailboat

Being a liveaboard has enabled Martin to sock away a few dollars and buy a vintage Formosa that he is working to restore. After completing a fiberglass patching, he sailed a crew of friends to Angel Island where he moored overnight. Martin’s ongoing renovation includes plans to refurbish the teak deck and varnishing the rails.

bentley 38 sailboat

“It’s living according to certain values, absolutely no impulse buys,” according to Vicars. Vicars says space is less of a challenge to her since she rented a room prior to living on a boat. “This is so much better.”

Most of Martin’s sailing experience is within our bay including Paradise Cove in Tiburon and the Clipper Cove at Treasure Island. “I want to sail to Monterey to see what sailing on the open ocean is like before we move on,” Martin says. The couple would like to start their world voyage by heading south with the Baja Ha Ha Flotilla , which convoys from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas each October.

Irkutsk is the most popular stop for Trans – Siberian travelers. In this fascinating city, which was once known as the “Paris of Siberia,” you will find people relatively more friendly and relaxed than those in Moscow and other major cities on the west. The city is relatively small, laid back, and most of the points of interest are easily walkable. Along many of the streets, you can see historical cozy – looking log cabins with decorated windows with detailed woodwork, which is typical Siberian architecture. Irkutsk is conveniently located about an hour away (by car or bus) from the southern shores of Lake Baikal – the oldest and deepest freshwater lake on our planet.

How We Got There

Even though a journey on the Trans-Siberian Express # 002 is the longest train ride in the world but for us, it’s only 48 hours from Yekaterinburg to Irkutsk.

There are a couple of major airlines flying to Irkutsk International Airport (IKT) such as S7, Aeroflot, China Southern, Korean Air, Uzbekistan Airways, and more. Check out Priceline.com or CheapOair.com for a bargain.

The airport is about 5 miles (7 km) from the Irkutsk Angara hotel and about 40 miles (64 km) from Listavyanka or Lake Baikal. There are many taxies available at the airport; all you need to do is negotiate the price. You can also use Uber or Yandex taxi if you have their app and access to wifi.

Day Trip to Listvyanka & Port Baikal

Listvyanka is an urban locality in Irkutsk District of Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, located 70 kilometers south of Irkutsk, near the point where the Angara River meets Lake Baikal. The village of wooden houses beside Lake Baikal is the most popular tourist destination on the lake. The village is easily accessible by bus, minivans, and even ferries from Irkutsk city.

Circum Baikal Train, Lake Baikal

It is doable as a day trip from Irkutsk, or many stay there a day or two. There are so many things to do that will definitely not disappoint you. We enjoyed a speed boat ride in the lake later, visited the shaman stone in the middle of the Angara River, where it meets Baikal lake, toured a village market, and had some delicious smoked Amul fish a fresh catch right out of the lake. We took a ferry to Port Baikal and walked for miles following the famous Circum-Baikal train track. In the afternoon, At the end of our day trip, we took a cable car to the Chesky Stone Hilltop and watched one of the magnificent sunsets of all time from the lookout. The memories I gathered is priceless.

Try Local Food in Irkutsk

Clermont restaurant, polskikh povstancev st., 1, irkutsk.

Just a few minutes’ walk from Angora Hotel. We, in fact, liked the food we ordered. All we wanted to eat was salad, fish, and pelmeni. So we got Omul Fish soup, smoked Omul, and of course, Pelmeni and the traditional Russian salad was delicious.

Kochevnik, Gorkogo St., 19, Irkutsk

This is an excellent restaurant serving mainly delicious Mongolian food. Only about 7 minutes’ walk from the Angara hotel. It is one of the most loved restaurants by locals and tourists alike. Most of the food is delicious, and I would definitely recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

  1. BENTLY 38

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

  2. Info on 38' Bently/Ingrid Cutter

Not that the yards couldn't produce good or great boats, but that quality could be inconsistent or suprisingly bad at times. That said, when I look at the other nine 38' Ingrids currently listed on yachtworld, the Bentley's $67K asking price is about average in the list (52,500 to 95,000).

  3. Bently 38

The Bently 38 is a 38.0ft cutter designed by William Atkin and built in fiberglass by Emerald bay trading co. since 1977. The Bently 38 is a heavy sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a heavy bluewater cruising boat.

  4. Review of Bently 38

The DL-ratio for Bently 38 is 361 which categorizes this boat among 'heavy cruisers'. Heavy Light 12% 0 50 100. 12% of all similar sailboat designs are categorized as heavier. A heavy displacement combined with smaller water plane area has lower acceleration and is more comfortable.

  8. Can't find much info on the 'blue' worthyness of the 38' bentley. Any

Absolutely. Its definitely a Bentley. My quick google search didn't drum up very much real information about the Taiwanese made Bentley. This just seemed like a good resource as far as the original design aspects of the boat (assuming that the Bentley was made using the Alajuela molds).
