The Land Yacht 'The Wanderer' in Northumberland 1886

William Gordon Stables was born in Banffshire in 1838. After attending Aberdeen University, he became a surgeon in the Royal Navy. He retired in 1877 due to ill health. Afterwards, in 1885, he commissioned ‘The Wanderer’, the first horse drawn touring caravan, which he called a Land Yacht. The account which follows describes part of his first extended caravan tour to the north of England and Scotland.

He did not travel alone, however. As well as the necessary horses, ‘Pea-blossom’ and ‘Corn-flower’, ‘Hurricane Bob’ his Newfoundland dog, and ‘Polly’ his Cockatoo, he was accompanied by Alfred Foley, his valet, and John G.., his coachman. When he got bored with the caravan he explored side roads on his Ranelagh Club tricycle.

I have pleasant recollections of my last day or two’s drive in Northumberland north, just before entering my native land.

Say from the Blue Bell Hotel at Belford. What a stir there was in that pretty little town, to be sure! We were well out of it, because I got ‘The Wanderer’ brought to anchor in an immensely large stack-yard. There was the sound of the circus’s brass band coming from a field some distance off, the occasional whoop-la! of the merry-go-rounds and patent-swing folks, and the bang-banging of rifles at the itinerant shooting galleries; but that was all there was to disturb us.

I couldn’t help thinking that I never saw brawnier, wirier men than those young farmers who met Earl P—— at his political meeting.

I remember being somewhat annoyed at having to start in a procession of gipsy vans, but glad when we got up the hill, and when Pea-blossom and Corn-flower gave them all the slip.

Leaving Belford

Then the splendid country we passed through; the blue sea away on our right; away to the left the everlasting hills! The long low shores of the Holy Isle flanked by its square-towered castle. It is high water while we pass, and Lindisfarne is wholly an island………….

I remember that near the borders we climbed a long, long hill, and were so happy when we got to the top of it – the horses panting and foaming, and we all tired and thirsty.

The Cat Inn

Here on the hill-top was an inn, with its gable and a row of stables facing the road, and here on a bit of grass we drew up, and determined to take the horses out for the midday halt. But we reckoned without our host. The place was called the Cat Inn. The landlady was in the kitchen, making a huge pie. No, we could have no stabling. Their own horses would be home in half an hour. She followed me out.

“Half an hour’s rest,” I said, “out of the sun will do my poor nags some good.” “I tell ye, ye canna have it,” she snapped.

“Then we can have a bucket or two of water, I suppose?” “Never a drop. We’ve barely enough for ourselves.”

I offered to pay for it. I talked almost angrily. “Never a drop. You’re no so ceevil.”

Royal Northumberland Yacht Club is based in Blyth South Harbour in the North East of England. We run a regular programme of races of varying styles on week nights as well as full weekend events. We have a busy calendar of social events, including lively pontoon parties, and occasional educational talks lead by members of the club and external speakers. We are an RYA Training Centre running a full range of theory and practical courses and we also run first aid courses from time to time. Our club house is the HY Tyne III, a Trinity House Light Vessel (LV50) built in 1879.

Our Courses

The school boat, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 419 Pure Gallus built late 2016 operates out of Royal Quays, North Shields, a superbly equipped marina with very smart ensuite facilities and accessible 24 hours, so we can enter and leave through the lock at all times, day and night.

RYA Training Courses run from April to June and are usually booked up well in advance. Then there's a summer break during which time we do manly non RYA stuff to include Day and Adventure Trips. Often requests are made for training before a family summer sailing holiday in the Med and there's always the Day Shorebased Courses such as VHF, Diesel Engine and Radar. RYA 5 day courses re-start about the end of August and carry on through to October and sometimes November when the weather tells us to 'go home'. RYA Training Centre

I would like to learn to Sail - How do I start?

A very popular question and my answer is; first look at the target, and this, for most sailors, is RYA Day Skipper Practical or the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). Armed with this certificate you are able to bareboat charter i.e. charter a yacht and go off yourselves, within the charter company's area. Furthermore, one person onboard needs to have a VHF Operator's Certificate.

The Day Skipper Practical Course is 5 days living onboard. It is important that you have the necessary experience and qualifications before you start this Course . You will be expected to be able to sail showing wind awareness and having practical skills to more than RYA Competent Crew standard. Current theory to RYA Day Skipper standards for navigation, tidal calculations, pilotage planning & plotter use. Then you can go off and sail your own adventures! Notes from the Field

Sailing away for pace.

Hello from sunny Santa Barbara, California, where the ship operations for the PACE-PAX campaign are underway!

The PACE satellite went into orbit in February 2024. Its mission is to help us better understand how the ocean and atmosphere exchange carbon dioxide, as well as how aerosols can fuel phytoplankton blooms and help us track harmful algal blooms around the planet. PACE-PAX stands for Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem – Postlaunch Airborne eXperiment (see why we made it shorter?) We are using two airplanes and three ships, among other free-sailing instruments, to gather data that will tell us how well our shiny new satellite, PACE, is doing. We compare our planet-side data with the space-side data so we can make sure we are providing the very best information about the health of the world’s oceans.

Our planes are the ER-2, which is a super high-flying plane that hangs out right near the edge of space, and the Twin Otter, which holds a variety of instruments that are vital to the aerosols part of the mission.

Our ships are the R/V Shearwater , the R/V Blissfully , and the small fleet of R/V Fish boats. The R/V Shearwater is the main ship for this campaign. She holds a science team from multiple organizations and a wide variety of instruments. These include some that stare at the Sun, some that go in the water, and some that stay on deck. The R/V Blissfully is a sailboat located in Long Beach, California, that is taking an important subset of measurements to complement the Shearwater . She has a crew of just two people, so they are extra busy! Finally, the R/V Fish are our rapid response vessels. They can move around much faster than the other two and can get to specific locations quickly to take critical measurements.

My job is to collect water samples and filter or store them for analysis back in the lab, all the way back in Maryland. The samples I collect will be analyzed with at least five different instruments, which cannot be brought out to sea. There’s not enough space, and some of the instruments have dangerous elements that are not worth the risk of using while on a boat. There is also the issue of space. You can only bring so much to sea, so we take and preserve samples that can wait for analysis.

PACE-PAX is unique in that our cruises are day cruises. Usually, we get on a boat and don’t get off until the campaign is over. That can be days to weeks to even months living on a ship! This time we get to go back to a hotel in the evenings, which feels very odd in comparison. It can be hard to get your sea legs when you aren’t given time to get used to the motion. I have been relying on medication, ginger, and very salty snacks to get me used to the motion in the ocean.

Length: 56ft. Berths: two double and six single, or one double and eight single, in four/five cabins. Two toilets.

Walk through from the front Cruiser stern with handrail. The front cockpit has seats either side. Radio CD player and TV. An inverter proves 230v AC, to power any of your own normal mains appliances up to 1000 watts. There is a mains hair dryer.

The saloon at the front has an L-shaped settee with a table which can be hidden away when not required. The settee converts either to a double bed or to two singles. There are large drawers under the settee.

The dinette is raised to give better views and makes a focal point. There is a drawer and storage under the seats. The galley has a free-standing cooker (with 4 burners, grill and oven), fridge, lots of storage and worktop.

The bathroom has a shower tray, toilet, basin and shelves. Its doors go across the boat to give a large compartment, or close to leave a smaller compartment without blocking the corridor.

There are three cabins, each with a fixed bottom bunk and doors to divide it from the next cabin. Each can have an optional top bunk fitted. Cushions are foam covered with vinyl. There are drawers and storage under the bottom beds. The forward cabin has a large shelving unit, divided into handy sections. Forward bunks

Blyth Tall Ship is a pioneering project that sets out to recapture the spirit of adventure and global entrepreneurship that was employed in Blyth to discover the Antarctic land mass 200 years ago in a sailing ship called the Williams . It sets out to inspire future generations to fulfil their potential and improve their communities well-being by:

- Running a traditional boatyard that introduces engineering skills through the medium of traditional boat building to unemployed and marginalised people, working alongside retired engineers and craftsmen, and helping them to find work.

- Restoring and maintaining a 100 year old wooden Baltic Trader as an offshore training vessel and for heritage sail training (see image above).

- Developing a museum and visitor attraction alongside their partners on the quayside at Blyth which also offers the lonely and isolated a friendly place to gather and take part in heritage activities such as Gansey Knitting and Archiving.

- Co-ordinating a large volunteer group in support of their community and every aspect of the project including social events and open days.

Learn to Build Boats!

There is a huge renewed interest in our local maritime culture across the UK. At Blyth, in the North East of England, the team are supporting people to learn traditional boat building and shipwright skills. Blyth has been a busy port for many hundreds of years and boats that were built here traded across the world’s oceans. Indeed, a boat from Blyth discovered Antarctica. The team want to continue that tradition and encourage a whole new generation into traditional boat building.

They offer a free Level 1 NVQ course in our heritage boat yard, and the opportunity to work up to level 2 and 3 NVQ. They welcome anyone who would like to visit them and learn more. This can be a springboard into whole new area of personal or career development.

Traineeships

Blyth Tall Ship delivers high quality accredited foundation learning in engineering through the medium of heritage boat building skills. They deliver NVQ's in Marine Engineering Levels 1, 2 and 3 through EAL. This allows their trainees and apprentices to gain transferable industry standard skills.

Occasionally they offer additional courses in welding, marine engines, fork lift driving, working at heights, abrasive wheels, chan saw and wind turbine building as well as courses in basic seamanship on their tall ship, the Williams II .

They use a high ratio of trainers to learners to ensure the very best opportunity to learn and progress is delivered. Their trainees work alongside volunteers with a lifetime of experience in the offshore and engineering industry who provide a sounding block and positive example from another generation. They also have the opportunity to visit local engineering and offshore companies to see first-hand the sorts of careers they could engage in.

Because they are small and independent, they are able to develop cost effective, specific skills courses in short time scales, to industry led demand and standards. Indeed because of their foundation process, they can act as a recruitment agency, sourcing new skilled individuals and training them in advance for specific roles. They have done this for Tharsus Engineering and the Port of Blyth and would be happy to speak to other engineering organisations with similar needs.

They are funded by a range of channels including sponsorship, donations, running sailing trips and grant funding including The National Heritage Lottery Fund, as well as a number of other organisations such as the Port of Blyth, Northumberland County Council, Catapult, Job Centre Plus and many of the charities administered by the Community Foundation.

They introduce all trainees and less experienced engineering volunteers to the project through an 8-week (two days a week) Level 1 NVQ in Engineering Operations.

Blyth Tall Ship works with volunteers on every element of their programme for 3 reasons:

- Community transformation only happens from within

- Inter-generational learning is a proven pathway to community cohesion and the development of young people

- Skilled volunteers provide professional services that our charity could not otherwise afford. Thus, the Friends of Blyth Tall Ship are a central element of their success.

They are a friendly bunch enjoying each other’s company as they work. Roles include helping young people building and conserving traditional boats in their workshops, researching, restoring and cataloguing the port of Blyth archive, supporting open days and events.

They also recruit and train experienced crew for sailing the Williams II . Even with little experience you could be helping out quickly by attending their NVQ training courses, sailing onboard the ship, knitting hats, gloves, scarves and Ganseys or being trained by their archive team.
