What do during a weekend in Cheboksary, the heart of the Volga River

Try famous Chuvash beer

Museum of Beer.

Museum of Beer.

Cheboksary is only 400 miles east of Moscow. With half a million inhabitants, the city is the capital of the Republic of Chuvashia. Cheboksary is located on the Volga River and is a hotpot of both Russian and Chuvash cultures. A hop flower and its leaves are depicted on Chuvashia’s coat of arms - around 90 percent of Russia’s hops are grown in the region, which has a long tradition of brewing. In ancient times, picking hops was an important part of life. “The Chuvash people used to say, there are as many women as there are types of beer,” local tour guide Lyudmila Ilmenderova explains.

Home brewing was widespread in the area and families passed recipes through the generations. Thanks to this beer culture and the unique climate, Chuvashia established itself as the main hop growing region in the Soviet Union. By the end of the eighties, local state farms grew up to 95 percent of all Soviet hops that were used not only for beer production, but also cosmetics and food.

In downtown Cheboksary there is the Museum of Beer. It was opened in 1997 by the Bouquet of Chuvashia brewing company. Here you can find 19th century beer bottles, beer coasters, and old brand labels. Russian brewers from the 19th century took great care when producing the beverage and only used the finest ingredients. Every manufacturer used their own branded packaging and often emblazoned their name on the bottles.

Authentic Chuvash beer is still brewed, 120 miles away from Cheboksary in the village of Komsomolskoe - especially for the museum. You can try it there!

Merchant Yefremov Boulevard is the main pedestrian stretch in Cheboksary. The man who the street is named after, Prokopiy Yefremov, was the richest tradesman and philanthropist in Chuvashia in the 19th century. Dotted along it are kiosks selling souvenirs and interesting local monuments.

One of them is the monument to Ostap Bender and Kisa Vorobyaninov, the protagonists from the satirical books The Twelve Chairs  and  The Little Golden Calf  by Soviet authors Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov. The Twelve Chairs is about a pair of merry characters - Ostap Bender and Kisa Vorobyaninov - who embark on the journey across the USSR to hunt diamonds sewn into the upholstery of chairs that were sold off at auction. There are several monuments dedicated to the famous book in Russia and the CIS - the statue in Cheboksary is perhaps the most well-known though.

Where to find the monument: Merchant Yefremov Boulevard, 4.

Walk on the Alley of Love

Alley of Love.

Alley of Love.

Like Bubblegum Alley in California and the custom of leaving notes on the wall of Juliet's house in Verona, the tradition of turning spots in the city into public artworks exists in Cheboksary. Take the Alley of Love for example, one of the most romantic places in the city. It attracts lovers, newlyweds, and anyone who wants to tell the world about their feelings. They leave notes on the white fence of the alley and along the path leading to it. There’s also an embankment with stunning views of the Volga River.

Where to find it: Mosckovskaya embankment, 1a.

One of the best ways to observe the city is by taking a ride on the ferris wheel in the bizarrely named The 500th Anniversary of Cheboksary Park (Maksima Gorkogo Avenue, 2). During the summer, guests can enjoy outdoor swimming pools here, along with numerous beaches both in and outside the city. In winter, it’s just a pleasant place for taking a stroll.

You can view the entire cityscape from the hilltop in Pobedy Park (Victory Park), dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War. It’s located on the high bank of the Volga River.

Where to find it: Zoyi Yakovlevoi street, 54.

Visit the oldest prison in Russia

The oldest prison in Russia.

The oldest prison in Russia.

Constructed in the 16th century under the order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, the prison was rebuilt several times. The first building was made of wood and burnt down before a new prison was erected in stone in 1646. The country’s second oldest building, Vvedensky Cathedral, was completed three years later and sits just in front of the jail. Both incredibly are still in operation today.

Vvedensky Cathedral.

Vvedensky Cathedral.

Chuvash Prison was renamed Cheboksary’s Jail Castle in the 19th century. The Vladimirskiy trakt is nearby: The road from Moscow via Vladimir, Cheboksary, and Kazan was used by convicts and reaches as far as Siberia. So the castle was used to lock up prisoners overnight - or for longer - before they continued east. Today the prison is called IZ-21/1 and 10 of the 39 wards are original, but it’s probably best not to try and take a look inside...

The History of Chester Race Week

Chester Yacht Club Race Week

A Historical Perspective

Chester Race Week trophy

As sailors and fishermen have been wont to do since time immemorial, they loved to get together and talk shop. Sailing races for pleasure and bragging rights was inevitable. As the gatherings and races occurred more regularly, the Annual Fishermen’s Regatta was born. The regatta was a show case for locally built boats of different designs, as well as for sailing skills.

The first  documented  regatta was in 1856. It is reported to have been attended by 3,000 people who participated in a parade, amusements, land races as well as the sea races. In 1858 a rowing race for ladies was added and a dance took place at the Mulgrave Inn which had been hosting guests from Europe, US and Canada since 1820. In 1860 the press reported the regatta pleasures were “enhanced by a large party consisting of 150, accompanied by the city band, who arrived in the steamer ‘Neptune’ from Halifax”. In 1885 the two day regatta had boats from Mahone Bay, Lunenburg as well as from the two Tancooks. The big excitement was a circus which featured a hand cranked Ferris wheel on the parade ground. According to the Lunenburg newspaper, the 1888 Annual Regatta attracted 2,000 spectators who were treated to “the closest and most exciting match of its kind ever witnessed in the South Shore”.

After CYC was established in 1902, it became the focal point for racing. Charter member Ned Fader remembers, “Citizens donated prizes: 100 pounds of sugar, a barrel of flour, maybe a little cash. A boat crew could get a wonderful view on life for a dollar … best of ale, fifty cents a gallon, good rum at one dollar a quart. They were all good God-fearing people, but they did not let it spoil their lives too much.” In 1902 there were 5 classes for racing yachts based on the old Rater Rule (water line and sail area) As interest increased and designs evolved, competitive requirements led to more classes, designs and sizes. And so it shall always be.

In 1903 Hackmatack Inn brochure claims that during Regatta Week competition attracted boats from Halifax, Yarmouth, Sydney and Digby yacht clubs. The annual cruise to Chester enhanced the fun of racing.

Race starting line was in the Front Harbour for a few years, however but that soon proved to be too narrow. It was moved to the Back Harbour where it remained until 1926 when CYC acquired the present Club House and wharf.

There were slow years during World War I but the Twenties were years of great Chester racing successes. The competition between Chester yachts and those of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron was intense and it continued throughout the Depression and the rest of the Thirties .

World War II years closed RNSYS and seriously disrupted Chester Yacht Club with decreased membership and funds. The Club stayed open but big yachts and men were mostly absent .  Rationing of fuel and other necessities limited provincial travel.

By 1945 folks were returning to Chester and inter club racing. Chester yachts cruised to Halifax for their big open cup competition. RNSYS returned the favour by accompanying the yachts back home. For the first time since the turn of the 20 th  century there were four clubs competing in Regatta Week. Yachts from Bedford and newly formed Armdale Yacht club joined RNSYS. The competition was keen. The Visitors’ Cup was won by a Halifax skipper in “Restless” one of the Heisler Chester C’s. Chester continued winning most of the trophies.

History Chapter 1_html_53074e23

An annual cruise to Lunenburg had been a regular event since before the Lunenburg Yacht Club was officially established in 1948. Now it was becoming a major celebration (Prince’s Inlet Race) at the end of Race Week. This consisted of a morning race from Lunenburg followed by a race of the entire Race week fleet back to Lunenburg. The early Fifties had between 15 to 25 participants by the end of the decade the average participation had mushroomed to 40.

History Chapter 1_html_m2ac65696

By the Sixties change was the rule of the day. As wooden boats disappeared, the number of fiberglass boats grew. Race courses, rating systems, trophies and classes of racing yachts changed. The former First class was divided into A1 and A2. Second class became B and Third became C. As usual Race Week was the highlight of the racing season and the racing committee was keen on increasing participation.

In 1964 after much deliberation and consultation with local racers as well as with those from other clubs, Chester Race week was fixed for the third week of August, all boats were in the water by then and crew availability was good. This event would make Race Week even more attractive to local and visiting sailors. That year, enhanced by the perfect weather, at least 16 boats crossed the line for every race. The previous year, the most valuable trophies had been contested by no more than three boats. Three years later as part of the 1967 Centennial celebrations, Race Week was scheduled for July. Race Week was a disaster but a July Race Week will definitely not happen again for one hundred years!

Ooh! I just discovered your wonderful site today (popped on my pinterest board. It is so beautiful, thank you! I will explore it more now that we have to stay at home for a while... I have a gorgeous Bedouin Dress hanging on my Living room wall, I also made some pillows and a small stool cover, using scraps from another dress. I love them and get many compliments. (I live in NYC but grew up in the middle east). Cheers :)

Lovely--and thank you. I found your site while researching Catherine II's Volga trip in 1767. I have also been to Cheboksary myself, but wanted to refresh my memory about the attire. I hope to encounter another one of your postings as I continue the book I am writing!

I forgot to ask, but if you come across any additional info about Catherine's visit to this region, I'd love to know. The biographies are all quite contradictory.

Thanks for your research. My son recently married a Russian Chuvash girl. We are south American and I am fascinated by the rich culture of the Chuvash people.
