Being a Personal Trainer, Yoga Teacher or Spa Therapist in the Superyacht Industry

Just imagine…

Yoga on the Sundeck cruising through the Caribbean, providing a massage on the port side balcony in St Tropez, or a gym session overlooking the British Virgin Islands for the Owner of a luxury Motor Yacht.

These are a few of the wonderful opportunities that exist for those with additional skills in the Yachting World.  Add these experiences to the excellent starting salary of approximately €2500-3000/month and no rent or bills to pay and it really is an attractive career path to take.

In recent years wellness on board for both owners and crew has never been more important. Having recognised the positive benefits that exercise has, a number of boats now have dedicated crew gyms with many using them on their days off or as a place to unwind after a busy day.

Owner requirements have also extended with it now not being uncommon to find personal trainers, massage/ beauty therapist and yoga instructor trained crew who use their expertise whilst the owner is on board. The team at Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors, who specialise in gym design & luxury wellness spaces for superyachts and prime property, told us that they too have noticed these changes, with many more asking for advice on treatments and specialised equipment. They also noted that there has never been a better time to enter the yachting industry with these qualifications as they are still relatively new skills that will definitely give your CV the edge.

So how do you get into this industry and what qualifications do you need to have?

Most Yacht owners/guests have very high expectations, we would look for individuals with adequate gym experience and a minimum, recent Level 3 in Personal Training Certification is required. For Yoga Instructors your 200hr certification is sufficient and Beauty Therapists usually require an NVQ Level 3 with a range of massage skills, nail care and facial techniques. With the yachting industry being incredibly competitive, having something extra to offer guests will help your CV to stand out.

You are of course predominantly working as a Steward(ess) or Deckhand, therefore, you will have to obtain your minimum Maritime Qualifications such as your STCW and Eng1 Medical Certification (please see our ‘How To guides’ or ‘Do you have the skills’ blogs for more information on these qualifications).

What to Expect?

Having been around over ten years, Wilsonhalligan are well aware of the current market demands of PT’s, Yoga Instructors and Beauty Therapists, plus our consultants are ex-yachties who understand first-hand having had previous Masseuse/PT experience. Your days will vary depending on how much the guests like to use your additional services. When not working as a Trainer, you will be working in your chosen field of either a Deckhand or Steward (ess), which will take up the bulk of your time on board. Unlike Cruise Ships, you are not solely employed as a Trainer and it is important to remember this when choosing to enter the industry. You will, however, be working in some of the world’s most beautiful places, getting to do something you love and getting paid an excellent salary.

We are looking for an experienced Chief Engineer to join an 80m M/Y.

Exciting worldwide itinerary on the cards with plenty of charters already locked in for 2025.

Engineering team of 5 onboard.

Chief Engineer Unlimited license is essential for this role.

Due to the incredibly busy schedule, you will need to have 3 years + previous Chief Engineer experience on yachts.

Fantastic longevity amongst the HODs on board.

Own cabin with private office attached.

This is a hands-on position, and you will be required to get stuck in with day-to-day jobs. A strong commercial background will be preferred.

On offer is a salary up to €12K, a very generous longevity bonus and an even split of charter tips.

• This is a fantastic opportunity for a newly qualified OOW with Bosun experience to step up into their first Junior Officer position with the chance to gain navigational and bridge experience whilst still being a key player on deck leading the deck team.

• This is a fantastic opportunity to join a professionally run, Dual-Season vessel with an extensive World Cruising Programme.
• The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a years’ experience onboard a similar-sized vessel and be confident driving large tenders up to 30ft. Having your YMO in hand would be preferred, however not essential.

• The ideal candidate will be a trained paramedic, however a nurse with Trauma / A&E experience would also be considered.

Private Chef needed to join a villa in Europe, with the potential to go permanent for the right candidate. 

We are looking for a Chef with an excellent background in private cheffing who wishes to be land-based. This role will be based in Spain to begin with so you must have the rights to work shore-side in Europe. Please do not apply if this is not the case.  

– The family are UHNWs so there is a possibility for lots of opportunity within the wider staffing. This position will start off as a temp project for about a month, but there could be a possibility for it to go permanent for the right candidate, what that role looks like will be a discussion to have with the team if things go well. 

– Must have a few years of experience working as a private Chef either on yachts or within households. Ideally you will also have a strong restaurant background. 

– Responsibilities will include daily service for the principals as well as maintenance of the kitchen – you must show initiative and keep the area clean, well stocked and running smoothly. 

– There is a large kitchen to work in, you will also have a Sous Chef who is already on site. 

– When it comes to the guest’s preferences, they are looking for a Chef who has a good knowledge of Japanese and Asian cuisine. They love Nobu style food so someone who can create similar dishes and flavours would be great. 

– Service style will depend, in general the principal likes things to be well presented but focuses more on the flavour. Things being ‘fancy’ is less important. 

– Salary is very competitive, it will depend on experience but could be up to €10,000 a month.

We are looking for a Sole Chef to join a 28m private yacht in Spain ideally as soon as possible. 

This is a seasonal position for the summer (most likely ending in October) with the potential to be permanent for the right candidate.  

-You will be required to cook onboard the yacht for the summer months as well as potentially in the owner's home as they live by and could be offered to cook at the owners residences during the winter months too, if desired. This said, it can be a seasonal position only. 

-Experienced yacht owner who uses the yacht for himself and his family over the summer months. 

-The yacht operates with 4 crew in total. Captain, Deckhand/Engineer, Chef & Stew. The Deckhand/Engineer is currently on the yacht and this will be his 3rd season with the program. You will be sharing a cabin with the Stew. 

-The owners enjoy fresh, healthy Med style cuisine. They enjoy simpler styles of food so are by no means expecting Michelin star meals! They tend to eat healthy salads, pastas, grains and proteins. The crew food should reflect this also. 

-The owner has been using the vessel fairly frequently as it has been moored near their home, with a least a little day trip down to the vessel most days.

-The salary on offer is €5,000 -/+ depending on experience.

-Ideally you will be able to start within the next week or so. 

Head Chef – 60m + Motor Yacht – Busy Charter

We have a 60m+ Private/Charter dual-season motor yacht currently looking for a rotational Head Chef to join them by the start of October. 

-Lovely boat with nice longevity from the HODs onboard. Incredibly supportive captains who prioritise crew culture and wellbeing. 

-The yacht operates a dual-season private/charter program and has prehistorically done very well with charters. There are equal split of charter tips for the crew. 

-The galley runs with 2 chefs. You will be responsible for the smooth running of the galley, all guest food as well as managing the Sous Chef to ensure a good quality of crew food. 

– There is a very strong crew culture onboard, with a close-knit team. There are 16 crew in total who are all fairly sport and active. They are looking for someone health focused, who is passionate about serving up nutritious, healthy food options for the crew. 

– They are looking for an Head Chef who ideally has charter experience, you could be newer to the Head Chef position but will have a strong restaurant background as well. 

– Start date will ideally be around the end of September/start of October.

-We are looking for an established Chef that have fantastic land-based (Michelin ideally) experience as well as some yacht experience to join. A very high-end restaurant background is highly desirable.  

-The yacht is looking for someone flexible, adaptable and with no ego! The yacht has a slightly unusual set up so we need candidates to be flexible with the overall goal of working as a solid team to produce the best food possible for the guests. 

-You will work within a larger fleet team, sometimes with 2 or 3 Head Chefs in the galley.

• 70m Private World cruising yacht are looking for an experienced 2 nd officer holding CM unlimited to join them around the end of September
• This is a fantastic opportunity to join an exciting program with extensive crew longevity and with the potential to progress and move within the program over time
• The role itself will include both 2 nd officer and Chief officer duties, stepping up and stepping down during rotations
• The ideal candidate will have a solid yachting background but also hold their CM unlimited to allow them to step up and grow within the program
• The itinerary is very exciting with extensive cruising and off the beaten track destinations – full details TBD during initial calls
• Previous experience with ISM, ISPS, GMDSS essential along with good navigational and watch keeping experience
• Additional experience with Ice Navigation and large crane ops and operation of large tenders would be advantageous
• As mentioned, the role will include stepping up to Chief officer and stepping back down during rotations. There is also a strong potential to step up to Chief full time down the line allowing someone the opportunity to grow
• Interest and or Diving qualifications would be advantageous but not essential

Video posted on social media shows the moment Steve Jobs' former superyacht Venus collided with another yacht in Naples, Italy.

The video, posted by Mexican telecom billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego on X, shows the moment the 257-foot-long Venus, now owned by Steve Jobs' former wife Laurene Powell Jobs, collided with Pliego's 344 foot-long Lady Moura on July 22.

"You guys won't believe this, but our yacht was hit while we were in Naples," Pliego wrote to his followers on X. "Apple founder Steve Jobs' yacht (now owned by his wife Laurene) hit us while we were anchored off Naples."

Pliego added his boat only suffered a few large scratches, which "will cost a lot to repair."

"I would like to know what the (Venus) captain and crew were doing that they didn't see a yacht the size of mine in front of them."

In a statement to Business Insider, Emerson Collective, an organization that Powell Jobs founded and is president of, said the collision happened while both boats were anchoring off Naples, adding only the crew was onboard.

PALERMO, Italy (Reuters) - British tech tycoon Mike Lynch died of suffocation after running out of oxygen, an investigative source said, citing initial examinations carried out on Saturday after his body was recovered from the family yacht that sank off Sicily's coast last month.

Lynch, his daughter Hannah, 18, an onboard cook and four guests died when the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian sank during a severe and sudden weather event off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, on Aug. 19.

Initial results on Hannah Lynch's body, whose examinations were carried out on Saturday, were inconclusive, the source told Reuters, only ruling out any traumas or wounds as the cause of death and leaving open the possibilities she either ran out of oxygen or drowned.

The bodies of the dead, except for the cook, were found in cabins on the left-hand side of the 56-metre (184-feet) vessel, where the trapped passengers may have tried to search for remaining bubbles of air, the head of Palermo's Fire Brigade said last month.

Preliminary results from autopsies on four other victims - Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda - indicated suffocation as the likely cause of death, judicial sources said earlier this week.

Fifteen people survived, including Lynch's wife, whose company owned the Bayesian, and the yacht's captain.

Initial examinations of the Canadian-Antiguan onboard chef Recaldo Thomas indicated he died by drowning, the investigative source said on Saturday.

Further forensic tests have been ordered all the victims, with results expected in the coming weeks, the source said.

The sinking has puzzled naval experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, which is owned by The Italian Sea Group, should have withstood the storm and not have sunk as quickly as it did.
