Ravenger refit pictures released as Baltic Yachts heads to METS

19 november 2024.

Baltic Yachts Service & Refit is stepping up its presence at this year’s Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) in Amsterdam as the 2024 winter refit season gathers pace. A wide-ranging team of refit experts from each of Baltic Yachts’ key locations – Jakobstad, Finland and Palma, Mallorca – will be at the show, led by the new Managing Director of Baltic Yachts Service & Refit, Alastair Campbell.

Alastair, who is based in Palma, joins Baltic Yachts Service & Refit from a senior management role at C-Tech, a supplier of custom carbon components to the superyacht and grand prix raceboat sectors. With a background in professional yacht racing including some notable wins in the offshore and inshore circuits, alongside a career working for major yachting industry brands, Alastair brings a broad base of knowledge and expertise to his new role.

On its exhibition stand at METS (Nº 11.623), Baltic Yachts Service & Refit is showcasing two product lines that have been developed in house. Baltic Yachts began designing and manufacturing its own ranges of carbon composite hatches and carbon pop-up deck cleats, initially for new build projects, because cleats and hatches of sufficiently high quality and low weight were difficult or impossible to source from external suppliers. Hundreds of hatches have already been produced, some of them supplied to another shipyard.

These high-end components are equally ideal for retrofitting and they are now available on the open market, produced to custom specifications in a choice of styles and finishes. Examples of both product lines can be seen and retrofit projects discussed at METS.

In other news, Baltic Yachts Service & Refit can now reveal ‘before and after’ pictures from one of its biggest projects in recent years: the recently completed refit of Baltic 175 Ravenger , which is the world’s largest carbon composite sloop.

Commissioned by the yacht’s new owner to optimise her already impressive performance, the extensive refit works have transformed Ravenger from a pure luxury cruiser into a racer-cruiser with great potential on the superyacht regatta circuit. At the same time major changes have been made to both her exterior look and her interior, which is reconfigured and completely restyled. All technical systems on board have also been comprehensively serviced.

Ravenger’s interior has been completely restyled by Design Unlimited in a project that includes:

  • Reconfiguring the yacht’s two-level saloon
  • Changing the finish of surfaces throughout all guest areas including the master cabin
  • Dark stained oak is now prominent
  • New cabinets, ceiling panels, bookshelves, floorboards and more
  • A stand-out feature of Ravenger’s original design and construction, the large fold-out balcony platforms in the saloon and owner’s cabin – a world first in a sailing superyacht – have been preserved

Another notable project, just completed in Palma, is the refit of Wavelength , a 90ft Pendennis cruising sloop. She is now due to cross the Atlantic with a full new interior designed by Andrew Winch plus a range of upgrades and service work.

In Palma, Baltic Yachts Service & Refit has 20 major projects under way including ten sailing yachts over 100ft LOA. Half of these are members of Baltic’s own fleet while the other half are from other shipyards. The works include everything from regular maintenance and gardiennage service to electrical system replacement, hybrid power installation, carbon composite structural work, new composite parts, full interior restyles, PLC system upgrades and more.

In Jakobstad the next major refit project is Gaia , a 100ft classically styled sloop built by Spirit Yachts with wood-epoxy construction. This includes the installation of a new teak deck, full exterior revarnishing, fitting a new main engine and generator, renewing her plumbing, a range of interior works, and replacing her monitoring and control system.

‘The team I’ve joined at Baltic Yachts Service & Refit is remarkably close knit, strong and dependable with their heads and their hearts in the right place,’ says Alastair Campbell. ‘We can deliver comprehensive support for any type of superyacht.‘

‘We’re very advanced in key areas like the engineering and installation of hybrid power systems, and also in system control and monitoring through PLCs,’ he adds. ‘Both of these are increasingly of interest for the yachts down here in Palma. And at METS we’ll have an eye on new sustainability solutions.’

ex-pink gin now ravenger baltic 175 yacht at baltic yachts

World's largest carbon fibre sailing yacht completes "transformational refit" at Baltic Yachts

The 53.9-metre sailing yacht Ravenger , previously Pink Gin VI , has officially completed her 10-month refit at Baltic Yachts ' facilities in Jakobstad, Finland.

The Baltic 175 was delivered in 2017 as the world's largest carbon fibre sloop-rigged sailing yacht, a title she still holds to this day. She checked into Baltic Yachts in November 2023 following her sale to a new owner by Edmiston and Fraser that same year.

Her exterior styling was penned by the owner’s team, including Finnish designer Jarkko Jämsén . Her regular maintenance and refit schedule has kept her in class, so the refit works have been largely aesthetic and performance-enhancing. This comprised major upgrades to her rig, sailplan and sailing systems. Design Unlimited is responsible for the reimagined interiors, including a restyled owner's cabin.

Designed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co and Design Unlimited, the 325GT yacht is a regular on the regatta circuit thanks to her lightweight carbon construction and is often seen flying a pink spinnaker on the water. Her mast has been rebuilt to support a more powerful sailplan with a square-top mainsail and a triple headsail configuration, plus larger code and offwind sails.

Further modifications include her bowsprit which has been extended by 1.5 metres, a replaced headstay and her running backstays which have now been fitted with deflectors.

In terms of her exterior restyle, Ravenger now has a hardtop Bimini that shelters the midships passenger cockpit (styled by Jarkko Jämsén ). Alterations are also being made to the helm stations, including modernising the ergonomics and style of the control console and adding an additional helmsman’s Bimini set on a carbon fibre tubular framework.

Meanwhile, her new interiors incorporate softer, neutral tones and light oak veneers on surfaces, including headboards and tabletops.

Accommodation remains largely the same, with the exception of the owner's cabin, which is installed with hand-carved timber furniture. The standout large fold-out balcony platforms in the saloon and owner’s cabin from her original design have been preserved. There is also a new breakfast bar in the main saloon, in the area originally occupied by the baby grand piano.

In terms of performance, Pink Gin 's bowsprit has been extended by 1.5 metres and her single, fixed backstay has been replaced by running backstays. This allows for a modern, triple-headed sail plan for power reaching, comprising a code sail, jib and soft-luffed furling staysail which can be lowered when not in use. To complement this upgrade, all the yacht's deck winches have also been replaced, with smaller, lighter and faster drums supplied by Harken – reducing the total winch weight from 600kg to around 150kg.

Senior project managers at Baltic Yachts, Mikael Nyberg and Tommy Johansson, have led the refit works. Tommy explained: "Another focus of this project is enhancing her noise reduction solutions ensuring they remain the leading edge by implementing all the knowledge we have gained in recent projects.

He continued: "She was state of the art then, but there have been some big developments since she was delivered. For example, we have made a new bedding mount for the entire interior and installed a complete new fastening system for ceiling panels".

Nyberg added: "The boat is entering a new phase of her life. With this refit we are ensuring she is fit and ready for the next challenges that await her, be they on the race course or exploring off the beaten track".

Baltic 175 was one of the shipyard's most technically advanced yachts at the time of her delivery, with features including fold-down balconies attached to the owner's suite and a collection of Cuban artwork on board.

This follows the announcement that Baltic Yachts had begun construction on a new, high-performance cruising sloop. Exterior and interior design is owed to Malcolm McKeon and Adam Lay Studio , respectively.

Baltic Yachts’ Palma service and refit operation gains certification

Baltic Yachts’ service and refit operation in Palma de Mallorca has been awarded the DNV (Det Norske Veritas) ISO9001 Quality Management certification and the DNV Shop Approval for Composites for the recently opened facility in the Son Castelló district of the city.

The plaudits follow a year-long project undertaken by Baltic Yachts’ head of quality and sustainability, Pamela Honga.

The new 800sqm multi-department workshop, which can laminate large structures for almost any requirement on yachts, is thought to be the only facility of its type on the island of Mallorca with a DNV Approval of Manufacturers (AoM) certificate.

Pamela Honga, who moved to Palma de Mallorca for a year with her family from Finland specifically to prepare the Palma operation for certification, said that initially, ISO 9001 Quality Management System was the main aim.

“We achieved that in April this year, and I am delighted that, following inspections, we now have shop approval, or AoM, from DNV,” says Honga.

Honga says that the intention was to implement the processes that Baltic already has in Finland.

“This has established the Baltic quality ‘label’, which provides reassurance for our clients as much in Palma as it does in Finland,” she says.

Honga says that she will now be working on achieving further ISO certification in Palma to cover health and safety and environment, again matching those held by the Finnish company.

Baltic Yachts ’ service and refit operation in Palma recently celebrated its 10 th  anniversary with a party and presentation in the Son Castelló facility. With a staff of more than 40, it has built a reputation for quality service, refit and guardianage. A key factor in this success has been a programme of worker exchange between Finland and Palma, enabling a transfer of skills.
