Iconic yachts: Inside the build of 162m superyacht Dubai
Related articles, superyacht directory.
The creation of the iconic yacht Dubai was far from straightforward, with the build changing hands three times. Dubai was the largest yacht in the world by volume at the time of her build, with a gross tonnage of 12,488GT. She was originally intended for one royal family but went on to be used by another royal entirely. Commissioned by the Sultan of Bruneiâs brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah, Dubai started her life in Germany with naval architecture developed by Blohm+Voss (now part of LĂźrssen Yachts ), while design came from the UKâs Winch Design . In 1998, the project rolled to a standstill, with work completed on only the steel hull and part of the aluminium superstructure. The project was lying on a covered floating dock at the Blohm+Voss yard, and liquidators went out into the market to find potential buyers.

Her name gives the next part of the story away: the partially built yacht was sold to the Dubai government. âOnce Jefri fell out with his brothers, his assets were seized, including the yacht which was at early stage of construction,â explains Kostis Antonopoulos, the former managing director of Platinum Yachts, which eventually oversaw the build of Dubai . âIn fact, at that time I was working at SETE of Latsis group and we offered for the project, but Dubai offered more and they got it.â
Initially, the Dubai government assigned the build project to Karam Sadikoglou in Turkey. The dock, partially built yacht and containers holding equipment such as main engines and generators were sent to Sadikoglouâs facility in Turkey. However, progress was slow, and the Dubai government demanded the project be transferred to the UAE. With progress still slow and costs skyrocketing, Sadikoglou left the project. Antonopoulos was brought in to finish the build under the banner of Platinum Yachts , a subsidiary of Dubai World. The project had almost 800 people working on it, not including the hundreds of subcontractors. Antonopoulosâs job wouldnât be an easy one â he had to reorganise the structure of the build team, restore confidence in the project and gain the confidence of the Palace. Sultan bin Sulayem, the chairman of Dubai World, served as the in-between for the owner and yard.

âThe design of Dubai was quite ahead of its time, and although she had an enormous size the design did not flirt at all with the shapes of cruise ships,â says Antonopoulos. âAnd except for the hull, the rest was built and outfitted by people who had no idea what a yacht looked like.â Antonopoulos flew employees to the Monaco Yacht Show so they could see the details that make a superyacht. âIt was great experience for them and a quantum leap to their knowledge and understanding,â he says.

The interior design was completed in-house by Platinum, and most of the build-out was by local contractors in Dubai. âThe brief was simple: the owner wanted a floating Burj Al Arab â and he got it,â says Antonopoulos of the colourful interior which he describes as an âattackâ on the senses. There are many custom details, such as the handmade tiles in the swimming pool, which are lit up by embedded optical fibres. Her massive volume afforded space for 48 guests and 88 crew. Dubai also had a cinema , disco, helideck , and a garage holding a submarine and a variety of toys.

As Dubai was built for a royal, security was a priority. âI asked a computer security firm to hack the yachtâs network , and while we thought that we had a very secure ship, the guys hacked it in 30 minutes! Of course, we redesigned the security,â says Antonopoulos. Another day, the owner came on board and discovered the lower decks did not have a clear GSM signal, so ceilings had to be ripped apart to add repeaters. Challenges to make the yacht SOLAS compliant were resolved by sending materials for lab tests to obtain class approvals.
Antonopoulos, who currently serves as managing director of Samos Steamship Co, looks back fondly at his time working on the build of the iconic yacht Dubai . âI enjoyed building a really good team,â he says. âWhen I arrived, the people in the project were working in isolation and there were competing teams⌠I managed to bring them together and make them understand that by cooperation and teamwork we can not only achieve successful completion of the yacht but we can also enjoy our time together!â

Itâs been quite a while since the royally iconic yacht Dubai was finally launched in 2006, but Antonopoulos says she stands the test of time. âI think her design is timeless and she can even be considered a classic now.â Dubai sails under the UAE flag and is known to be an active yacht, recently spotted cruising in the waters off her namesake city.

The keynote speech was delivered by Sahah Al Rasti, the UAEâs first female captain, on International Womenâs Day as the conference opened with a panel discussion regarding the empowerment of women in the sector, which was moderated by Abeer AlShaali, and the panellists were, Deputy MD of Gulf Craft, Al Rasti, Claire Ferandier Sicard, CEO and Founder of Environmental Training for Yacht Crew, ChloĂŠ Zaied, CEO at Hynova, and Dasha Moranova, CEO of Dasha Moranova Designs.

The 5 Most Expensive Superyachts in the World
Though superyachts are already among the most costly consumer items available for purchase, the prices of the most expensive superyachts in the world are still astounding. In recent decades, those with money to burn have settled on these floating palaces as an ideal locus for demonstrating their prosperity, and as such, the global superyacht industry is undergoing a golden age. The worldâs Ăźber-wealthy think of their superyachts as toys, and theyâre constantly trying to outdo each other in scale, design, amenities, materials, and sheer profligacy.
Knowing this, what features does it take to own one of the most expensive superyachts in existence? And how much do these opulent vessels actually cost? To that end, AD has compiled a list of the five priciest superyachts currently out on the water. As with many things connected to the very wealthy, details are shrouded in secrecyâoften intentionallyâto protect privacy or to shield the assets from taxation or seizure. Below, dive into the five reportedly most expensive superyachts in the world.
5. Dubai ($400 million)
This 531-foot yacht is reportedly owned by United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Though it was originally planned for another Middle Eastern potentate, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, he suddenly voided the contract in 2001. With exteriors designed by Andrew Winch and interiors by Platinum Yachts, this German-built Blohm + Voss vessel features several Jacuzzis, a pool inlaid with handmade mosaic tiles that is reportedly large enough to hold 115 people, a circular staircase, a discotheque, squash courts, a movie theater, a dining room for 90 guests (the other 25 presumably have to eat in the pool?), a helipad, and a submarine.
4. Topaz ($527 million)
Resembling a stealth bomber, this 483-foot ship is reportedly owned by Russian fertilizer and coal oligarch, Andrey Melnichenko. With exteriors by Tim Heywood Design Ltd. and interior designs by Terence Disdale Design, this German-built LĂźrssen Yacht features a 2,500-square-foot primary bedroom, six guest suites (with moveable walls so they can be transformed into four grand staterooms), glassware and tableware fashioned from French crystal, a helicopter hangar, a 30-foot speedboat tender, and three swimming pools, including one with a glass-bottom dangling menacingly above a disco.
3. Azzam ($600 million)
This 590-foot ship is currently thought to be the largest private yacht in the world and one of the fastest, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. To achieve this immense scale and speed, it required a pair of gas turbines and two stratospherically potent diesel engines, rendering it very difficult to build. It is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With exteriors by Nauta Yacht and interiors by French decorator Cristophe Leoni, this yacht was also built by LĂźrssen in Germany. The vessel is set apart by its early 19th-century empire-style veneered furniture, as well as its state-of-the-art security systems including a fully bulletproof primary suite and a high-tech missile deterrence capabilities.
2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion)
In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the worldâs second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdomâs sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the oceanâs surface.
1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion)
History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real, and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysiaâs richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-carat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.

Expats paying $43,000 school fees fuel rise of Dubai billionaire private operator
DUBAI â At Gems World Academy in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, kindergarteners have access to iPads and students spend time at the schoolâs 70-seat planetarium. That all comes at a cost â fees that can rise to US$33,000 (S$43,000) by grade 12.
It is the most expensive school in the chain run by Dubaiâs Gems Education, which is among the worldâs largest private school operators.
Founded by Indian-born billionaire Sunny Varkey, Gems caters to every price point, starting at as little as US$3,900 a year. But a boom in the emirateâs financial sector has meant Dubai is home to a growing population of hedge fund traders and bankers willing to fork out premium prices.
Private schools are big business across the globe â and they tend to be pricey in most major hubs. In Britain, for instance, Nord Anglia Education has been looking to sell a stake at a US$15 billion valuation. But Dubai is more lucrative than its peers because local rules make the cityâs public schools largely inaccessible to most expatriates.
That translates into big money in Dubai, where about 90 per cent of the population of 3.6 million is from overseas, giving businesses unparalleled opportunities to profit from the education system.
Foreigners from every part of the world â from the US and Britain to Russia and India â have been pouring in since the Covid-19 pandemic, attracted by the cityâs safety and low-tax regime. The government in Dubai  expects the population to surge to 5.8 million by 2040.
For Gems, this means demand is running so high that it has drawn up plans to add 30,000 new school places, chief executive officer Dino Varkey, the founderâs son, said in an interview at the companyâs headquarters.
This June, the Varkeys raised more than US$3 billion from local banks to recapitalise the business while Brookfield Asset Management and co-investors committed US$2 billion to Gems. The family is now estimated to control a US$3.7 billion fortune, the Bloomberg Billionaires index shows.Â
The dependence on a city long known for dramatic boom and bust cycles leaves the business vulnerable to volatile expat numbers that can shrink in cyclical troughs. But for now, the Varkeys are betting that Dubaiâs parents will continue to pay top dollar.Â
Gems is the largest school operator in Dubai, where it competes with international names like private-equity backed Nord Anglia, as well as a string of local companies and branches of overseas institutions like Kent College.
About 80 per cent of families in the UAE are setting aside over a third of their monthly income to pay for tuition, according to data assessed by investment banking advisory firm Alpen Capital, which cited a survey. Some of them have drained their savings and resorted to personal loans to finance their childrenâs education.Â
While data is scarce, a 2017 study from HSBC Holdings found that foreigners in the UAE spend more on education than families anywhere in the world except Hong Kong. And despite shelling out thousands of dollars, there used to be lingering concerns that the relatively young schooling system could sometimes fall short of international standards, prompting some residents to pay higher fees than they want to in order to ensure a good education.
âThe quality of education in Dubai is improving, but concerns remain due to the relative newness of many schools compared to more established systems in other expat hubs,â said Ms Karen Cedillos, senior vice-president for US-based Corporate Relocation Services.Â
But these days, the expat influx has meant that Dubai schools are nearly at full capacity. Many parents are placed on waiting lists, forcing some to pay even more than budgeted.Â
âIn our experience, the high cost of education in Dubai significantly influences expatsâ salary expectations,ââ said Ms Cedillos. âClients tell us that the added financial burden often leads expats to attempt to negotiate higher salaries.â BLOOMBERG

Sicilian prosecutors said on Saturday they were investigating possible manslaughter after a superyacht sank killing seven people, as it emerged that trapped passengers scrabbled for air pockets after it went down.
UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, four friends and the yacht's cook died when the British-flagged Bayesian sank in a storm before dawn on Monday.
"The Public Prosecutor's Office of Termini Imerese has registered a file with the state against unknown persons, hypothesising the crimes of negligent shipwreck and multiple negligent manslaughter," state prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio told reporters on the Italian island.
Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.
But he said he was only announcing the probe due to the huge international interest in the case, stressing: "We are only in the initial phase of the investigations.
"At this stage, precisely because the investigation could develop in any way, we are absolutely not ruling anything out."
Lynch, 59, had invited friends and family onto the boat to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case.
But the 56-metre (185-foot) yacht was struck by something akin to a mini-tornado before dawn on Monday as it was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo.
Fifteen people were rescued and the body of the yacht's chef was found shortly afterwards. Six passengers were reported missing.
A major search operation including specialist divers subsequently identified the bodies of four of Lynch's friends on Wednesday.
Lynch's body was found on Thursday and that of his daughter, who had been preparing to go to Oxford University, on Friday.
The bodies were found in two cabins on the side of the ship closest to the surface, and officials said they believed the trapped passengers had moved there in a bid to find pockets of air.
The ship sank by its stern â the back â and came to rest on its right side on the sea bed, some 50 metres down, Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra of the fire service said.
He told reporters the passengers inside "took refuge to seek safety in the cabins on the left side where somehow the last air bubbles formed".
"We found the first five bodies in the first cabin on the left side, and the last body in the third cabin on the left side," he said.
Bayesian's emergency flare had gone up at 4.38am (0238 GMT) on Monday morning, and the coastguard immediately deployed â but when they got there, it had already sunk.
Contrary to previous reports, Raffaele Macauda, from the Sicilian coastguard, said there had been no storm warning that night.
"It was a sudden and unexpected event," added Raffaele Cammarano, another state prosecutor.
The officials said the crew were free to leave Sicily during the investigation.
Information on whether the yacht's doors were open â which might explain why it sank so fast â would not be possible to confirm until the wreck was recovered, the officials said.
This could take weeks.
Lynch, once dubbed the British "Bill Gates", founded software firm Autonomy in the 1990s. Its $11 billion sale to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 saw him face fraud charges in the United States.
A jury in San Francisco acquitted the 59-year-old and a co-defendant of all charges in June.
After Hannah's body was brought ashore on Friday, her family issued a statement describing their "unspeakable grief".
"The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends," it said.
US lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at top law firm Clifford Chance who worked on the US trial, also died along with his wife Neda.
The bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were also found.
The chef was named in various media reports as Canadian-Antiguan Recaldo Thomas.

Inside the luxury ÂŁ30m yacht that sank in Italy with billionaire Mike Lynch on board
The bayesian yacht that sank off the coast of sicily on monday was once one of the most luxurious vessels in the world.
Joshua Nair
The luxurious yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday was once a multi-award winner for its sharp interior design.
In the early hours of Monday (19 August) morning, the sailing ship known as the Bayesian capsized and sank when a storm hit the coast of Sicily.
At the time, it was carrying 12 passengers along with 10 crew members.
It has been confirmed this morning that five of the six missing bodies have been recovered, including that of British billionaire Mike Lynch, 69 .
Chef Recaldo Thomas has also been confirmed dead, as only 15 of the 22 passengers made it onto a lifeboat before being discovered by a fellow ship.
The 184 feet (56 metre) superyacht was sold to Dutch real estate developer John Groenewoud for almost $40 million (ÂŁ30.4 million), before being bought by Lynch's wife, Angela Bescares, who survived on Monday, for around ÂŁ27 million in 2014.
Previously called Salute, the vessel was British -flagged and boasted the tallest aluminium mast in the world when it was built in 2008, which stood at 72 metres, winning it the award of 'best exterior styling' at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to The Telegraph.
The stunning interior included a number of sleek, luxurious furnishings created by Remi Tessier, a yacht design specialist.
This also earned the vessel a number of awards, having received acclaim through its masterfully designed master bedroom, three double and two twin bedrooms, which accommodated 12 guests.
The superyacht had dark wood furnishings that were complimented by beige sofas and a deck that featured a large canvas to keep guests cool while at sea in the summer.
There were more intricate details onboard too, with thin brown pillars and intricate terracotta sculptures adding some Japanese culture to the ship's styling.
The Bayesian went on to win best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008, while also being voted as one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards.
Currently owned by Revtom, a company that lists Bacares as its legal owner, the yacht's name comes from a statistical model called 'Bayesian', which helps financial investors calculate risk.
This was Lynch's Ph.D. subject, which would help him to build his multi-billion pound empire in the future.
Operated by Camper & Nicholsons, the superyacht had twin 965 break horsepower engines, which has a range of 3,600 nautical miles at around 14-17 mph.
Following the tragic accident involving those onboard the Bayesian on Monday, a number of people linked to those who have gone missing have offered words of hope and support in the search for their bodies.
A friend of Lynch, Brent Hoberman, told Sky News they were 'all hoping for a miracle'.
"We knew it was unlikely but you still hold out hope," he said. "It's just so unbelievably tragic for him to go through what he went through over the last 12 years, defending his name and not really living a full life, to now for his death to be confirmed is obviously incredibly sad."
