We also suggest starting on a flat, paved area where pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles won’t be a concern. Driveways are great choices if you have one available. An empty section of a parking lot is also an alternative but bring someone with you and take turns keeping watch.

Some basic tips for pushing: Keep your weight biased towards the front truck, lean to turn and most importantly, have fun! You will get frustrated but you will also feel incredible as you feel longer and longer successful pushes.

What Type of Longboard is Best for New Riders?

At the entry level, it’s best to choose a stable, durable board with a light to medium stiffness. Stability helps new riders feel comfortable as they learn while durability ensures the integrity of the board after an occasional crash.

Stability is influenced by a number of factors, but in order to maximize it, choose a wide deck with a longer wheelbase, wide trucks and a light flex to absorb road vibration. Drop through trucks are an option as well since they lower the board and center of gravity.

How Do I Pick the Correct Size Longboard for Beginners?

Size matters! In general, you’ll find a longboard to be more stable than its shortboard counterpart thanks to a longer wheelbase.

Boards between 30″ to 46″ in length are an ideal choice. Smaller choices are available, but they sacrifice stability which make them less ideal for beginners.

Does that seem like a wide range for longboard size? Well, it is! The beauty of longboard builds is that they offer so much variety. Now that you are shopping for your first longboard, you have probably already noticed all of the options available when you see longboarders cruise by.

The important thing to know is that it is very unlikely that you will pick the wrong size. You will ride many shapes and sizes as you learn how to longboard. There are plenty of opportunities in your future for you to buy the perfect longboard.

Does Snowboarding or Surfing Experience Help Me as a Beginner?

Definitely! Board-sport skills translate well between disciplines and skateboarding is no exception. The differences usually lie in weight distribution and which foot does the turning.

Remember to keep your weight biased towards the front foot while you’re learning to longboard. Turning is done by applying pressure heel side or toe side with both feet but the forward weight bias will help maintain stability!

You’ll notice that some instruction sound similar. When you learn how to snowboard, instructors often tell you to act like your feet are pedals, moving your toes up and down to help you turn the board. That’s the same with skateboarding and longboarding, you’ll put pressure on your heel or toe and your front or back foot. It depends on what direction you want to turn!

You will feel many differences between them as your learn how to longboard but some board familiarity will certainly help you in your first few riding sessions. The good news is that snowboarding or surfing experience is not necessary to learn how to longboard.

Do I Need Special Wheels or Trucks on My Beginner Longboard?

Wheels, trucks, and bushings are a few pieces of gear that make a huge difference in your ride in addition to your deck.

If this is your very first longboard, keep it simple! Buying longboards is fun but you probably won’t see huge performance differences for many months. Find a brand and design that you like and use our beginner guidelines below to find the perfect beginner longboard.

We prefer wheels in the 70-75MM range with a 80 – 84a durometer.

Truck width is also important with 150-180MM being the ideal width. Make sure that the trucks are not wider than the deck though! This is especially important for beginners who are building their board from scratch for the very first time. Not every set of trucks will work perfectly with every deck.

Bushings are a really important part of tuning your ride as you progress but as you begin, the bushings supplied with your trucks will be generally sufficient. Is a Longboard Easier to Ride than a Skateboard?

It’s a fair question to ask as a beginner: are longboards easier to ride? The short answer is, yes! Longboards, especially long, wide boards and decks that are considered drop-through.

The drop-through will lower your center of gravity. This will help you maintain your balance just a little bit better than a skateboard.

A wider or longer board does something similar. It is more forgiving if you lean back, forward, or to either side. As a beginner, you will probably find this to be easier than a small skateboard or penny board.

The drawbacks are really for more skilled riders: you will probably want a more sensitive board so you can make sharper turns and slide a little more freely. You can work on that after you’ve mastered the basic skills.

We do want to be clear: if you want to learn how to skateboard more than you want to learn how to longboard, then just start skateboarding! You don’t have to pick one. With some solid work on your skills, you’ll be riding both in no time.

Should I Wear Safety Gear as a Beginner?

As a beginner, don’t think that you are above wearing safety gear. You may be watching YouTube videos of pro’s doing downhill with minimal gear–that’s a decision that pro’s get to make after thousands of hours longboarding. You know what they did when they were beginners? They fell. All the time.

Let us be clear. If you are a beginner, you need to wear safety gear at all times. You will fall. A lot. It will hurt. A lot.

Why is it so important to stay injury free? Because the more time you spend on your board, the better you will get. You can’t get better if you’re stuck on at home on the couch nursing a wrist or ankle sprain.

Accidents will happen while you’re learning and it’s important to stay safe with basic safety equipment. Protective equipment includes helmets, knee pads, elbow pads and slide gloves. Do you need all of that? Not necessarily as a beginner.

The two most important pieces of gear for a beginner will be a solid, safe helmet and elbow pads. As you learn how to push and take on more tricks, you can expand into knee pads.

Lastly, when you start taking on small hills as you get excited about downhill longboarding, you can invest in some quality slide gloves to keep you hands in good shape.

Remember, everyone was a beginner at some point so there’s nothing wrong with spending a few days or weeks practicing on a flat area. Once you feel great on flat ground with plenty of space, you can try some slight downhill or push through a more crowded area. You will be carving before you know it!

What Essential Gear Do You Need as a Beginner?

Start with the helmet. You’ll see plenty of pro runs wearing a helmet for a reason, they’re incredibly important.

After that, slide gloves, knee pads. These protect you in case of a fall, and allow you to put a hand down without injury. The faster you ride, the more gear you will need at the beginning. We doubt you will be trying downhill longboarding in your first week. However, if you find yourself atop a small hill early on then we want you to be protected when you inevitably fall.

If you’ve got all the above, we can’t recommend highly enough a set of skate shoes. Skate shoes maximize the interface between your feet and the board. They’re grippy and they protect you in case of a fall. Shoes with a worn grip will be very hard to keep on your board.

The board flex will be soft, medium or stiff. The level of stiffness in the deck will help with stability, shock absorption and more.

Soft Flex has excellent shock absorption but loses stability at high speeds. This flex is good for mellow cruising and tricks.

Medium Flex

Medium flex is very spring-like, which adds energy to tricks. It is stable at high speeds and has good shock absorption. Medium flex is good for carving and commuting.

Stiff flex is stable at high speeds but not great on bumpy roads and cracked pavements. On the other hand, the stiff flex boards are good for bombing hills fast.

Board Length

The longer the board, the more stability you will have when riding. The shorter ones have more flex and have softer and quicker turns.

Longboard Trucks

Trucks are the t-shaped metal that connects the deck to the wheels. The main types of longboard trucks are the traditional kingpin and the reverse kingpin.

Technical freeride board: Loaded Basalt Tesseract

The Loaded Basalt Tesseract is an advanced freeride machine, 39″ long by 9.5″ wide with a 26″ max adjustable wheelbase. The symmetrical shape and nice dual kicks make this board very suitable for advanced technical freeriding, switch riding, and mixing in some freestyle tricks (the wheelbase can be adjusted down by 1.5″).

The Basalt has a noticeable rocker and W concave which provide a secure locked-in feel at downhill speed and for tech slides. The deck’s subtle wheel cutouts (not your typically cutout shape) and wheel flares provide extra wheel clearance.

The pushed-in wheel flares combine with the rocker and deep concave to create the deck’s snug foot pockets, making the Basalt a comfortable and confidence-inspiring freerider.

The Loaded Basalt’s construction is based on two bamboo cores surrounded in natural basalt fiber layers (instead of fiberglass). Unlike pure downhill decks, the bamboo core results in slight flex for a more forgiving ride suitable for a mix of freeride and pop tricks.

The cork layer on the bottom of the bamboo and basalt layers dampens the ride by reducing the vibrations from fast riding, and further reinforces the deck’s strength.

The combinationn of bamboo, fiberglass, and cork results in an exceptionally lightweight and durable deck with just the right amount flex for technical freeride.

Fast freeride board: Loaded Cantellated Tesseract

I’m including the Cantellated Tesseract in my top freeride longboard list in addition to the Basalt version because, although both share the same construction and contours, they are still quite different in shape and use.

The Cantellated is significantly shorter than the Basalt at 36″ (vs 39″) and is a directional, single kick shape designed for fast freeride. It has the same max 26″wheelbase as its bigger brother giving it good stability at speed.

The Cantellated Tesseract also boasts a rockered profile and deep W concave for solid foot lock-in in high-speed slides as well as strong lateral support for cornering. The short and wide kicktail is well-suited for responsive turns, snappy slides, and speed checks.

The shorter, compact form of the Cantellated makes it a good choice for faster downhill rides and even some downhill racing.

Learner freeride board: Landyachtz Switchblade

The Landyachtz Switchblade is one of the best beginner freeride boards out there. It comes in at three different sizes, 40″ x 10″, 38″ x 9.8″, and 36″ x 9.5″). The huge wheel cutouts (“wingtips” design) allow for big 70mm wheels without wheelbite.

The Switchblade is a pure symmetrical drop-through shape with huge wheel cutouts and a significant deck drop, making it one of the lowest-riding boards out there. It’s a super-stable board with a very long wheelbase (31″, 29″, or 27″ based on the size).

The Switchblade provides a very large and comfortable standing platform (due to the drop-through “wingtips” design) and a sturdy 9-ply maple wood construction. It has a tall W concave, raised edges, and deep foot pockets near the drops and truck mounts for a secure and comfy tuck-in feel.

This Landyachtz is an excellent board for learning to slide, practicing switch riding and 180º slides, and in general building your freeride skills. The absence of kicks, however, can be a bit limiting for more sophisticated freeride tricks.

The very low ride, maximum stability, and very secure feel this board offers comes at the price of a slightly less responsive ride compared to a more technical topmount freerider like the Tesseract.

Versatile freeride board: Loaded Omakase

Though much smaller than your typical freerider, I find the Loaded Omakase to be a really awesome board for mellow freeride. While it’s relatively compact at 33.5″ with a 22″ max wheelbase, the Omakase is very wide for its length (10″), giving it a solid and stable feel for freeride.

The Loaded Omakase is a single-kick directional shape built with a bamboo core (similar to the Tesseract) sandwiched between fiberglass and epoxy layers. This hybrid tech construction results in a stiff and strong yet lighwteight deck, well-suited for freeriding.

In contrast to the usual freeride decks, the Omakase has a relatively mellow elliptic concave, but the rockered profile and Loaded-style wheel flares create humps and small pockets that help keep your feet in place during slides.

The Omakase provides good wheel clearance and topmount responsiveness for tight downhill carves. The meaty kicktail offers nice leverage and control for pushing the back out into a slide, including with large grippy wheels.

In short (no pun intended), if you’re looking for a nice city commuter board you can also freeride on, the Omakase is truly a top choice. A fantastic board (it’s a Loaded) at an affordable price – around $265 for the All-Around.

Innovative freeride board: Landyachtz Drop Cat

The #5 best longboard I recommend for freeride is the Landy Dropcat. The reason I like this board is that it fits somewhere in-between a topmount and a drop down. It’s a 38″ x 9.9″ midsized drop-through with a near-symmetrical (though directional) shape suitable for switch riding.

The large wheel cutouts makes this board wheelbite-free for intense freeride carves including with big 72mm wheels. The long 29″ wheelbase is similar to the Switchblade 38″‘s, granting the Drop Cat great stability at speed.

In contrast to the Switchblade, the Drop Cat is not dropped in the classic sense. Instead, it features has a pronounced and futuristic rockered profile between the trucks which greatly lowers the deck in the middle.

This special design gives you a very stable ride at speed due to the low height, while the absence of a drop improves the leverage over the trucks and hence the responsiveness compared to a classic double-drop (like SB).

This also makes breaking into slides easier, closer to a topmount feel – where your feet nearly sit on top of the trucks. While the Drop Cat does not have a strong concave, the deep rocker helps keep your feet securely tucked in place when riding downhill and sliding.

Choosing the best longboard for freeride

Best mount style for a freeride deck.

The first thing to look at when choosing a freeride deck is truck mount style. Should you choose a drop-through deck, a drop deck (or double-drop), or a topmount? All of them can work, which you choose depends on your level and freeride goals.

A drop-through deck sits lower to the ground than a topmount, and the resulting lower center of gravity makes the board more stable and easier to initiate slides on.

A dropped deck (or “double-drop” if it also has drop-through mount) rides even lower to the ground and hence is even more stable and easy to break traction on. Drop-throughs and drop decks are typically longer than topmounts which adds to the stability at speed.

A topmount, on the other hand, while it typically requires more effort to push into a slide, is a lot more responsive than a drop-through/drop deck with a lot more control over the trucks once inside the slide.

In general, drop decks (or even double-drops) are ideal for beginner freerides as they provide stability and confidence for learning to slide downhill. Topmounts are often preferred by experienced freeriders for the leverage and responsiveness. Drop-throughs are somewhere in-between.

Deck size & shape for freeride

For freeriding, you may choose a symmetrical or directional deck. Symmetrical decks are well-suited for freeriding at lower speed and for maneuvers that involve switch riding. They’re generally bigger decks with larger wheel cutouts and thus more clearance for bigger wheels.

Directional decks are typically shorter and more responsive, suitable for more advanced freeriding and higher speeds. They’re typically topmount – directional drop-throughs (e.g the Sector 9 Lookout ) are less common.

Regarding size, a larger deck (e.g. 38″ – 42″) with a longer wheelbase will feel more secure riding downhill than a shorter deck (< 38″). A longer wheelbase will be less wobbly at speed and easier to learn to slide on. On the other hand, a shorter deck will be more responsive for fast turns.

Flex and kicks for freeride

A good freeride deck should generally be on the stiff side as a stiffer construction provides more stability at speed. Freeride longboards may have an 8 or 9-ply hard maple construction, or a more advanced bamboo + fiberglass hybrid construction.

A common question is whether a good freeride longboard should have kicks. Again, this depends on your riding style. Kicks are useful for technical slides and quick turns but typically lead to a shorter wheelbase and hence reduced stability at high speed. Thus, kicks are best for slower, more technical styles, or mixed freeride/freestyle riding. If you’re closer to downhill (more speed, less carves and tricks), go for smaller or no kicks.

Which concave for a freeride longboard

A freeride deck should have a decent amount of concave for a secure foot lock-in feel when riding fast downhill and when breaking into slides. Concave also works hand in hand with a deck’s drop (if any), rockered profile, or wheel flares to create deeper foot pockets that cuddle your feet.

If learning to slide, you may opt for a larger deck with deep foot pockets for strong foothold giving you confidence. As you improve, though, you might switch to more subtle concaves for more freedom of movement when doing technical slide tricks and switch riding.

Freeride truck style & height

Reverse kingpin trucks (RKP aka longboard trucks) are generally prefered for freeride longboards as they are more responsive and flowy at slow speeds and more stable at higher speeds – less turn for a given lean compared to traditional kingpin TKP (street) trucks.

Advanced freeriders focusing on technical slides, however, often choose smaller freestyle-type decks with TKP trucks which are narrower, very turny and divey – facilitates throwing quick slides. They’re also very durable in the face of the enormous un-natural mechanical pressure slides put on trucks.

Another important factor for freeride is truck height. I mentioned drop-throughs and drop platform decks lower the ride height, making the board more stable at speed. Likewise, a shorter truck will add stability to the board. RKP trucks are generally taller than TKP, but some RKP trucks (e.g. Paris v3) are shorter than others.

Freeride truck baseplate angle

Truck angle is the angle between the baseplate and the hanger (the part that hold the wheels). Higher angles make the trucks more responsive and turny at lower speed but less stable at higher speed, while lower angle trucks are less responsive but more stable.

Angle degress typically range from mid 40s to mid 50s. In general, 50º RKP trucks work fine for most freeride styles as they provide a good turn-vs-stability mix. Speed-focused riders tend to go lower (e.g. 45º). High angles increase the ride height so they’re not commonly used.

Freeride truck bushing seat & bushings

The bushing seat, the placeholder in the hanger where the rubber bushing sits, is an important aspect of a good freeride longboard. A tight seat restricts the truck’s turn and makes it less responsive but more stable at speed. An open bushing seat is the opposite, better-suited for slower and more technical freeride styles.

While most leading trucks have moderately restrictive bushing seats, freeriders often adjust the riding feel of their setup by trying different bushing shapes (cone, barrel) and durometers (hardness). You can combine medium and soft bushings based on your weight to get the right amount of turn vs stability.

Freeride wheel size

Wheels are a crucial piece of your freeride longboard setup. The first variable to look at is wheel size. Larger wheels (e.g. 70+mm) roll faster, but the diameter should be adapted to your deck’s wheel clearance, which in turns depends on its size and shape, to avoid wheelbite when carving at speed.

Freeride wheel durometer

Softer wheels (e.g. 78A) give you more control at speed and shave more speed in slides as they has more grip than harder ones (e.g. 84A). They also feel smoother when sliding. On the flip side, softer wheels are not as fast as harder ones.

Harder wheels are easier to break traction with at speed but are harder to control speed on because they have less traction. At low speeds, harder wheels also allow you to throw longer slides.

Freeride wheels shape

Besides hardness (durometer), wheel shape is another important factor for your freeride setup. Round-lipped wheels have less traction than sharp-lipped ones so they are easier to break into slides. Wheel width and contact patch also plays a role in the grip-vs-slide profile.

Deck characteristics also influence the choice of wheels. Larger and low-riding decks, for example, are harder to push into slides, so a set of harder (81A-84A) round-lipped wheels is typically a good choice for a freeride setup.

On the other hand, a smaller topmount deck will be very responsive and less stable at speed, so throwing some softer and/or square-lip wheels can help reduce the twitchiness when freeriding down hills.

Freeride wheels – other variables

Other more subtle wheel features can also influence how well they work for a freeride setup. Urethane formula, for example, can impact a wheel’ sliding behavior.

Wheel core placement (centerset is typically the best option) can also make a difference for more advanced freeriders as it affects the way the wheels get into, and out of, slides.

Freeride bearings

Freeride setups generally come with normal decent quality bearings, though most often with built-in spacers. If not, adding spacers yourself is a smart move as they will help protect your bearings from the strong sideway pressure they undergo when sliding and prevent them from wearing out too fast.

Protective gear for freeride

You should always wear protection gear when freeriding downhill! The following are a few quality helmets I recommend (Amazon links):

• S1 Lifer : very well-fitting, sweat absorbing liner
• Pro-Tec classic : protects you well – based on personal experience
• TSG Meta : super lightweight
• Bell Segment : flexible outer shell (some like it), solid, cheaper.

Here are some good slide gloves, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards:

9 Longboards for Heavy Riders That Can Take a Beating

When it comes to mobility and style combined, longboards are the perfect alternative for a rider. Many people think that overweight or heavy riders can’t ride but that’s just nonsense.

While the choice of the best longboard for heavy riders is somewhat limited, there are a couple factors you need to consider before you buy a new board.

A longboard is similar to a skateboard, only longer and more sluggish and not really meant for tricks. Typically, the weight limit of the best longboards for bigger and taller riders is up to 300 pounds.

I’ll will share a list of longboards and cruisers that are great for heavy riders and there’s a buying guide for taller and bigger longboarders.

Here are the top 8 of the best longboards for heavy and taller riders. These are recommended by the Reddit longboarding community, and I’ll mention a couple of cruisers tested by me.

It’s a mix of longboard and cruisers. Cruisers are more agile and great for short commutes, the longboards listed here are great for long-distance riding.

Let’s start with something aggressive and nimble. The Landyachtz Tugboat Captain sits between a skateboard and a longboard.

It’s super strong and can handle heavy weights well. If you’re looking for a fun and playful ride, this is a board to consider.

The super wide deck consists of a large kicktail and asmaller curbed nose, it also has quite a steep concave.

It will take some time to get used to it’s aggressive geometry but since there is lots of room for your feet, it won’t take that long.

The grip tape is very sticky which helps when you want to do some aggressive turns and keeps you on your board if you ride through rougher surfaces.

The huge kicktail has a very steep angle, more than any cruiser I currently but it’s great for digging in when you encounter pebbles and cracks.

Because of its steep concave and shape, you can actually do a couple of tricks but I would be careful. Hopping a few curbs is fine though.

The trucks and bushings are sturdy enough for sharp turns, but at some point the board will make it know you can’s push it any further. Don’t worry, you will notice this on time.

I’m not a fan of Fatty Hawgs wheels but they seem to perform really well on this setup. They’re only 60mm but it seems like the right size for this board.

The Spaceball bearings come with integrated spacers and aren’t that great, might want to swap them for Zealous bearings if you can.

Let’s move on to longboards.

I have not tested this board but when doing some research, the Bustin Elements is often recommended for heavy riders on several forums.

Bustin Boards made the new Sportster’ Elements’ for the low-platform commuters.

It has the signature ‘Response Drop’ design, which is extremely efficient for speed weaving in crowded urban areas. 

This longboard is the best for heavy riders because of its (E) Core inside. The deck is made of Canadian Maple wood with epoxy-based glues.

At the top, it has a Reinforced Maple top sheet, followed by seven composite reinforcement layers. At the bottom, fiberglass serves as the Truck mount reinforcement.

The length of the board is 35.5 inches, and the width is ten inches for the longboard. The width makes it suitable for riders with bigger shoe sizes.

Moreover, the wheelbase is a little above 29 inches. This is a compact ride with a reinforced fork nose. 

Longboard riders have varying skill levels. Some people could be newcomers, and others might be the maestros.

If you are a bigger, taller, and heavier rider and want to use the longboard for a durable time, you should choose Sector 9 Meridian, which suits all skill levels.

The drop-through mount design of the Meridian keeps it comfortable for the rider to push and have fun.

Its design keeps it low to the ground and offers balance at speeds with the eight-ply maple deck.

Trucks on this mean machine are incredible; 10.0 inches Gullwing charger trucks. Moreover, the shape is old-school Taco style, which helps you dig your feet when turning.

Bearings, however, have ABEC 5 ratings, but they give you a warranty of 25 years.

This longboard has a length of forty inches and a width of almost ten inches. The wheelbase of the Meridian is a little above thirty inches.

To conclude, it is the best longboard for heavy riders with a weight of up to 230 pounds.

Whether it is a cruise down the Boardwalk or a skate down the winding mountain road, Arbor DropCruiser Flagship will get you where you wish to go.

With an excellent standing platform, the DropCruiser flagship gives you balance and harmony with a Palisander wood top and bottom-finish ply.

This premium longboard is the most suitable for the overweight and taller rider because of its nine-ply Canadian hard rock maple.

It has soft and grippy wheels, which are the best for carving and cruising. This aesthetic ride is best suited for heavy riders with its 180 mm trucks.

For all of you who dream of riding on flat terrain or a swift downhill ride, Omen Barbarian is the best longboard for you. This longboard is highly competitive at a fair price. 

Price of Carbon Fiberboard (only): $139.99, you have to pick the other parts yourself!

The symmetrical decks ensure balance and stability for taller riders. The board is made of Carbon Fiber. 

It has a nine-ply maple deck, which is ideal for heavier riders. Moreover, Paris 50 reverse kingpin trucks are an added incentive for the taller riders.

I have not tested this board myself, but I know Landyachtz makes solid board.

Landyachtz is a premium longboard company, and I’ve have included their Switchblade 40 chief night because heavy riders recommend it.

The switchblade is the ideal longboard for freeriding, which comes in a double drop freeride shape.

This forty-by-twenty longboard ensures thrust, safety, durability, and top speed for taller and bigger riders.

Switchblade’s board set is a complete package. It has 180 mm Gen-6 grizzly trucks, making it the perfect longboard for the big guys.

The symmetrical deck is made with 100% Canadian maple and manufactured in Canada. 

The foot platform has space for dropping your foot while curving and turning, which serves as an added benefit for stability.

The perfectly paired components are freeriding bliss for heavy riders. Switchblade also has a 38 inches version, but 40 Chief Night is a perfect choice for taller and bigger riders.

The Glove big blazer is more of a cruiser and just 32″ long. It’s a great longboard/cruiser for beginners and heavier riders.

It can handle quite some abuse and is quite predictable. It takes some time to get up to speed but it’s surprisingly fast.

Experienced rider might find this board a bit boring but it’s perfect for heavier riders that are new to longboarding. Very stable and responsive, but not for cruising hours on end.

The deck is 32 inches tall and 9″ wide near the front. The length is between a small cruiser and a longboard (32″) and 9″at its widest point, great for heavier riders and beginners.

The lack of concave is what makes this board a bit dull. The deck’s surface is super flat and it has a small kicktail.

Still you can hop curbs and ride through rough surfaces with easy, just make sure to lean back when you encounter gravel.

This board is big and heavy, has a huge kicktail and is super wide. Same goes for the Paris Street trucks, super wide and very stable.

I love wheels, buttery smooth and the amber color really ads a nice touch.

The Oso has that Oldschool vibe and I wouldn’t be surprised if you can ride this one in pools. It’s heavy like I mentioned, but you won’t notice when riding. It only helps you to remain stable.

The very mellow concave makes this board more beginner friendly, way less concave compared to the LY tugboat.

This also means there is more room for your feet. The huge kicktail helps you to get into an aggressive stance when you enounter rocks, twiggs, or cracks and it ploughs through gravel with ease.

I needed some time to find the proper stance and learned that I like to place my feet near the front bolts and my back foot close to the tail.

In a more aggressive stance, I like to place my back foot on the tail, often when I encounter gravel, cracks, or a patch of grass.

What makes this board extra suitable for heavy riders are the hard bushings. This is the only thing that annoyed me and I had to replace them for softer bushings.

Heavy riders will appreciated them though, I got a few extra pounds myself but the hardness was too much for my weight.

This board is not for long-distance riding. It’s more of a commuter but perfect for heavier riders.

The Bustin Maestro is one of the most recommended longboards for beginners and heavier riders.

It’s not as cheap as those crappy Amazon boards but insteads you get high quality parts than can deal with heavier longboarders.

The Maestro is a pusher which means it’s less suitable for very long distances or free rising like the Bustin Sportster.

The Maestro is one of the best push boards you can buy, especially at its price point. The Maestro is great for those who want a bit of free style and are looking for a comfortable ride.

Longboards for Big Guys Buying Guide

If you are above 5′ 10″ and/or above 200 pounds, you could be considered are a heavy rider. Typically, longboards are manufactured with an 8-ply deck, which holds 250 lbs. on average.

The weight capacity depends a lot on how you keep yourself while riding. If you keep on pressing the longboard on the wrong spaces, it will reduce the durability.

Therefore, it is also dependent on the way you land, along with your weight. The parts play a significant role when picking the a longboard if you’re a bit heavier.

Let’s have alook at all the crucial components of a longboard so that you can get a better understanding of what you need.

This understanding will help you pick the “right complete” with the “right parts.” There is a thin line between a typical longboard and the one that is best for heavy riders.

Wood is a natural deck material for longboards. If you are buying a longboard with a maple deck, make sure it has a minimum of eight layers.

It is even better if you can get your hands on a maple wood deck with nine layers. Moreover, the deck width should be at least 9.75 inches to cater to the big guys.

For a heavier and taller rider, longboards’ maple wood deck needs to have board strength. If a maple wood deck is too flexible for your liking, please enquire about the layers.

As previously mentioned, 8-9 layers add sufficient board strength to uphold a bigger rider.

The most significant factor for buying the best longboard for bulky riders is the material used in its deck.

If it has bamboo layers, it adds natural flexibility to the longboard. This type of flexibility is not harmful to a taller rider.

Furthermore, if you want to choose the best combination for your longboard, you can select the combo of bamboo layers and fiberglass.

This arrangement is subtle and durable. It lends a massive amount of stiffness and strength to the longboard.

Hence, it would be best to do thorough research in deck material when looking for the best longboard for overweight riders.

Many longboards have flexible decks which is less suitable for heavy riders. Sure a bit of flex is okay, but stay away from really flexy boards!

Upward curved decks

If you are tall, heavy, and bigger, you should always look for the best longboard with an upward curved deck. This shape will add more longevity, and it is by far the least flexible deck shape.

Short Wheelbase

Typically, the durability of a longboard relies heavily on your skill level. If you know your weight, height, or size is massive, you should learn how to place your feet in the right spot.

Short wheelbase ensures safety and strength. The best longboards for heavy riders should have a wheelbase of shorter length.

Moreover, it gives you the allowance of placing your feet near the trucks. The wheelbase length should not be too short that a heavy rider cannot maneuver easily.

Long Wheelbase

When you are an overweight longboarder (or just a tall guy with heavy bones), I recommend focusing on tiny things that could be hazardous.

If the wheelbase is long, it could break the deck when you place a step wrong. Keep in mind, longboarding is a challenging sport, and you can expect sudden maneuvers along the way.

Therefore, I recommend that you don’t pick a longboard with a longer wheelbase if you are a heavyweight.

These decks are neutral for a heavy rider. Flat decks work better than a Cambered deck because the flexibility is less.

When looked at from the side, Neutral flat decks would look relatively flat than an upward curved deck or Downward Curved deck.

Flat decks are one of the best longboards for heavy riders, after upward curved decks.

Cambered Decks

The cambered deck is another name for the downward curved board. Typically, these boards flex more.

Flexibility, to an extent, is excellent for longboarding. Still, when it comes to heavy riders, flexibility can cause damage to the deck.

A bigger and heavier rider should not buy a longboard with a cambered deck. It is not “bulk-friendly.”

Concave Shape

Concave shaped decks add rigidity and subtleness to the longboard. If the concave is deeper, it lends more strength to the deck.

For that reason, a heavy rider should only choose a longboard with a strong deck. Flexibility is a noticeable feature, but not for taller and bigger riders.

Furthermore, W-concave is another style of this shape available in more expensive longboards.

Longboards for a heavy rider must have solid trucks. Trucks must not be made from plastic, as those can’t bear the weight of a taller and bigger rider.

Nylon, too, is a no-go for trucks. Your trucks should be made of Aluminum and steel, which will ensure a solid base for heavy riders.

Moreover, the best longboard will have kingpins, axles, nuts, and baseplates. All parts are vital for the solid construction of the longboard.

You should take into account the mounting style of these trucks as well. As a heavier and taller rider, if you want to ride freestyle, the drop-through trucks should be the mounting style.

However, if you ride a lot of downhill, trucks should be top-mounted. As far as the Kingpins go, you can select the hollow-shaped kingpins.

Heavier longboarders might benefit from harder bushings. Check out the table below and see what would work for you.

I included tables for longboards in general, freeride bushings, and downhill. You might want to skip downhill though, not recommended if you are a bit on the heavy side.

First thing’s first, because you are a taller and bigger longboard rider, you should not go for a cheap bearings option. Ignore the ABEC rating, check the build quality.

I personally recommend Zealous Bearings for cruising and longboarding. They are super durable and once you get up to speed, they just keep going.

Skateboard bearings like Bones are better for fast acceleration.

On a regular skateboard you just want to get up to speed fast and perform a trick. On a longboard you want to keep going without having to push too much.

Don’t go for Bones Ceramic bearings (over-priced) as well as lower grade metals. Steel bearings should be your way-to-go. The stronger the bearings are, the more durable the longboard will be.

Wheels are very important but not when so much when it comes to weight. Just get big fat soft wheels around 70-75mm/78A and you’re good to go.

With the modern advancement of Polyurethane, wheels can now withstand a heavier rider.

When a taller and/or bigger rider cruises on a longboard, it can be subject to an excess of sudden moves.

The days of cored wheels are gone, and manufacturers have found a solution to its weakness. 

For heavier riders, longboards should have sustainable trucks because this is where the load is being shifted while riding.

If your longboard trucks are made of nylon or plastic, it is a no go area for you being a heavy rider. Since you do not want your boards to crack, we recommend Aluminum or Steel trucks and bearing. 

Your decks should have eight plies or more, and your trucks should be solid. You can choose bamboo layered decks, or also a hybrid with fiberglass.

If you are riding at higher speeds, you will need a little flexibility in your deck, but since you are a heavy dude, the natural flexibility of bamboo layers should be the maximum you can opt for.

Besides, there is a risk of “wheel bite” for heavy riders. Your deck height should be tried and tested before buying a longboard.

If you are a taller rider, like more than 6′ 2″, why should you not have all the fun?

Furthermore, if you have complete confidence in your longboard riding skills, you can choose a smaller board for urban uses.

Because riding in city areas or going to your class will be crowded, it might be challenging to ride a 44 inches board.

Still, it depends on your preference and riding style. We recommend not choosing a longboard below 36 inches deck length even for urban rides to match your tall height.

Bigger riders have different problems. For instance, they could have overhanging feet for riders with bigger shoe sizes. Now, what to do when your shoe-size does not fit the standing platform?

If you’re heavy and have a very flexible board, riding might be a bit more difficult. Consider a stiffer board to help you maintain balance.

For those who have large feet and bigger shoe sizes, curved decks might be uncomfortable for you. However, it all depends on a person’s preference.

Our recommendation is to seriously think about this before buying a longboard for bigger riders, it will make the choice a lot easier.

Typically, decks are 42 inches long and 10 inches wide. If your shoe size does not fit, you can choose to buy a longboard 44 inches in length.

Longboards are for everyone no matter what your body type is. Consider the most essential things when buying a longboard and avoid cheap boards on Amazon.

Those are not going to ofer comfortable ride, not will they support your weight.

• The deck should be at least 8-ply.
• Wheel sizes preferably between 70mm and 75mm.
• Wheelbase length should be as per your preference.
• Deck width should be 8.75″ to 10″ for more balance.
• Deck material could be maple or bamboo layered.
• Deck material with an amalgamated layer of fiberglass is preferred.
• Board shape can vary, but “concave shape” is the best.
