Monaco braces for yacht show mania, traffic curbs and parking woes ahead

The Principality is gearing up for its world-famous Yacht Show, set to sail into Port Hercule from Wednesday, September 25 to Saturday, September 28, But before the mega-yachts arrive, the city’s streets are in for some disruption as preparations kick off on Saturday, August 31.

Key thoroughfares like Quai des Etats-Unis/Avenue JF Kennedy, Route de la Piscine, and Quai Antoine I will bear the brunt of these changes, with traffic restrictions beginning as early as Monday, September 9. The usually serene streets around Port Hercule will transform into a buzzing hive of activity, with parking bans and occasional traffic stoppages – even for pedestrians.

Not to worry though, as the organisers, in tandem with state services, promise to ease the chaos with measures to keep traffic flowing during rush hours. School transfers and deliveries will also get special attention to minimise the inconvenience.

Route de la Piscine will see a full traffic block for two weeks to accommodate the setup of exhibition stands, turning the area into a temporary “construction site.” However, the road will remain open during morning rush hour, except for a few critical days surrounding the event.

For those zipping around on two wheels, a temporary parking area for bicycles and motorbikes will be available on Avenue de la Quarantaine from September 9. As the yachts sail away, the streets will gradually return to normal, with all restrictions expected to lift by October 10. So, buckle up, Monaco yacht season is about to make waves.

Where Can I Park My Yacht In Moncao?

Monaco is home to several world-class marinas, including Port Hercules, Port Fontvieille, Mareterra, and Cala del Forte. Berths in the main marina come with different rates depending on the extent of the F1 track the yacht can see. For a 35-meter yacht in a place with no view of the track and only of the inside, it will cost around €30.

There are around forty public car parks and nearly 20,000 parking bays dotted throughout Monaco, with the Annonciade, Grimaldi Forum, and Jardin Exotique being the top choices for yacht charters. The two ports in Monaco are the huge and glamorous Port Hercule and the charming Port Fontvieille. With a yacht rental in Monaco, you’ll find three public entrances: Quai Antoine Ier, Parvis Piscine (Boulevard Albert Ier), and Quai Chicane. There are also two VIP entrances dedicated to Discover and Sapphire Experience passes.

The YCM Marina, located directly in front of the Yacht Club de Monaco’s new building on Quai Louis II, is an ideal port of call and for over-wintering berths. For every 10 meters over 150 meters, an extra €9k is charged on top of the 150-meter boat price. Booking a berth for a yacht in Monaco during the Grand Prix costs 30k for a mooring with no view, and 100k for the most desirable spots. You must berth at the pontoons of Port Hercule below to reach the entrance where you can pick up your Pass.

Monte Carlo Harbor offers luxury yacht parking lots with class, with a team available daily on the access ramp from Boulevard Louis II.

If the expense of booking the world’s largest charter yacht for a week is difficult to wrap your head around, then you’ll really have to do mind yoga to understand the ludicrous cost of actually owning a yacht .

Next up, enter the concept (because it really is just a concept for us mere mortals) of getting a prime yacht parking spot at the Monaco Grand Prix and the staggering figures that go with it.

DMARGE did some digging and spoke to Istanbul-based luxury yacht manager Candaş Balci to divulge approximately how much it costs to moor a superyacht in Monaco during one of its peak annual events.

There are different parking spots (berths) in the main marina that come with different rates depending on how much of the F1 track the yacht can see.

According to Balci, for a 35-metre yacht in a place that has no view of the track and only of the inside of the port, it will cost around €30 000 (R480 000) for the week.

The berths that look directly onto the track can go for around €50 000 through to €100 000 (R1,6 million) for the week, “which is almost their yearly berth fee in a normal marina”.

More digging (through  Reddit’s F1 Technical page) uncovered this price list from 2019, which seems more or less consistent with the pricing Balci gave:

Forbes also reported on this some time ago, with similar ballpark figures:

“To moor in one of the world’s most expensive marinas during high season, a superyacht owner can be expected to pay up to $4,130 per night, and during prime time events such as the Monaco Grand Prix rates can skyrocket to $100,000 or more for a five-day stay in Monaco’s prime berths.”

According to  212 Yachts , getting a berth during the Monaco Grand Prix is highly competitive, and something one needs to do well in advance as the port gets filled to capacity pretty quickly.

That means hastily completing a port application form:

In order to do this, you must first select your charter yacht as technical details of the vessel must be specified on the form. Those directly associated with the Formula One, the Monaco Grand Prix and the event sponsors are fast tracked in the process, contributing to the extremely competitive nature of this process.

At what stage the yachtie exits their own competition to watch the race, I will never know.

MONACO, Sept. 24, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Innovation and sustainability: these were the keywords at the 4th Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous. The event, held at the Yacht Club de Monaco on the 22 and 23 September 2024, was organised by Monaco Marina Management (M3) under the aegis of the collective Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting approach. “It is a key event for everyone to improve our industry and take it forward. Once marinas were seen as parking lots and now they’re places attached to cities, offering unique experiences where people can share moments together. We All yachting professionals have a role to play and we can point the industry in the right direction,” said José Marco Casellini, CEO of M3. A sector-wide desire to write the next chapter in the industry’s future is in fact the reason that brought together 250-plus professionals (entrepreneurs, industrialists, investors, promoters and marina developers, architects), from around the world, representing 25 nationalities.

During the two-day event, an the international jury finally met the participants evaluated the projects presented by the participants who highlighted solutions aiming at reducing the environmental impact, giving out the Smart Marina Awards. The 2024 winner for the marinas category was Alcudiamar Marina from Spain. Located in Mallorca, it has retained the jury’s attention thanks to their forward-thinking perspective on the environmental improvements to be made as well as the long way they have achieved regarding recent environmental applications.

The jury also awarded the Setur Marina Kas from Turkey for its sustainable investments, including solar installations and biodiversity preservation strategies. Committed to environmental protection, it holds several distinctions such as the Blue Flag label and ISO 14001:2015 certification. Its actions include managing invasive species, investing in renewable energy, and implementing a waste management strategy aimed at reducing plastic pollution.

Getting to startups, the winner was Clean Sea Solutions from Norway. According to the jury, it has been awarded due to its strong projects helping the reduction of plastics in marinas and a forward thinking to reduce plastic pollution in the ocean. Regarding scaleups, first place went to Ecocean from France for their strong involvement with biodiversity and scientifically proven help tin regenerating marine life in marinas. Innovators are also being offered a support program by Robert Allen Law, partner of the event, to help them develop internationally.

Architects, on their hand, participated to a call for ideas to design an innovative and sustainable floating marina in the sensitive Calanques area of Marseille. Winning the category is Structurelab from Germany. The jury, headed by Zaha Hadid Architects, mentioned their solution is a very elegant and effective design proposal: it presents a clear, simple, and effective narrative with well-considered modular design concepts. The design itself is both exciting and elegant, demonstrating high effectiveness and commendable presentation style. The student architecture prize went to Cornelia Bosman from the University of Pretoria, who stood out for her in-depth approach, combining innovation with exemplary eco-responsible thinking.

Arrogant Architects from Bulgaria has gained the Coup de Coeur Award initiated by the public, due to its commitment to sustainability by implementing artificial nurseries, improving thermal insulation, using seawater heat pumps, and integrating prefabricated and local materials to reduce CO2 emissions. Their modular approach also optimizes construction processes, reducing costs and maximizing efficiency.

“This is the fourth edition and we’re glad to say that we’ve experienced that the innovations brought by startups and scaleups participating to this event two years ago are actually being used by marinas to reduce consumption, have better efficiency and being more sustainable,” added Casellini. Alongside roundtables, speed networking and conferences, the participants, as such as Klaus Peters, CEO InterMarinas, were also invited onboard Sanlorenzo 50 Steel Almax, moored in the YCM Marina, and which was awarded 3 stars in the SEA Index certification, for a networking breakfast on Monday morning. The event is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and Extended Monaco (the Principality’s digital transition programme), alongside UBS, MB92 Group, Bombardier, the Italian Yacht Masters Association and Robert Allen Law.

By limousine

One of the most exclusive and private ways to travel in Monaco is by private limousine. There are several limousine companies offering a fleet of luxury executive cars for a personalized VIP service.

Monaco culture

Monaco has a rich and varied culture heavily influenced by its neighbors, France and Italy. Many of the principality’s residents are ex-pats, with a significant portion from France, Italy, the UK, Belgium, and Switzerland. Only around one in five residents are of Monegasque descent. This vibrant mix of residents creates a rich tapestry of cultures.

Monaco’s official language is French; however, English is widely spoken. You’ll also hear Monaco’s traditional language, ‘Munegascu,’ or ‘Monegasque’ a language which has its roots in Genoese. The Principality is governed by Prince Albert II, the hereditary ruler who ascended to the throne following his father’s death in 2005.

About Yacht Club de Monaco Marina

Yacht Club de Monaco Marina is located in the Principality of Monaco, on the promenade of Louis II. The yacht club was founded in 1953 and today about 2000 yachtsmen from 66 countries are registered in it. This innovative berth complex is designed for both the parking of small and medium-sized vessels, and the reception of superyachts, the owners of which receive privileges from the club for the period of stay in the principality. The owners of one of the most expensive yachts in the world stay here to relax on the magnificent coast of Monaco, which is especially important during the famous Monaco yacht show.

The exclusive Yacht Club de Monaco Marina meets international requirements and can guarantee a high level of service and safety. Designed to suit the local climate, the clubhouse is equipped with solar thermal panels and a seawater cooling system to take advantage of renewable energy sources. The building is made in a unique architecture - deck-shaped terraces rise up, providing an unrivaled view of the races in the sea.

Among the services provided at the Yacht Club de Monaco Marina :

  • Supply of ships with electricity;
  • Supply of vessels with drinking water;
  • A restaurant;
  • Premises for celebrations;
  • School of sailing, etc.

You can book a pier online on the website of the yacht club.

Club activities

Since its inception, the Yacht Club de Monaco Marina has supported the development of the regatta program, which has gained new dimensions under the leadership of Prince Albert. Competitions are constantly organized here, participating in which young yachtsmen can reach the highest sports level. The activities of the yacht club go far beyond the club for yacht owners, because on its territory secular meetings, conferences, business dinners, prestigious auctions and other events are organized.

The YachtCharterFleet team has experienced the F1 Monaco Grand Prix first-hand, and we are here to provide you with the ultimate guide to chartering a luxury yacht at the event.

With luxury yachts at the heart of the racing action, hiring a superyacht for the Monaco Grand Prix is the most glamorous way to experience the world's most exciting and iconic F1 fixture.

However, many people have questions about the booking process. From when to book to where to berth, this article gives a run-down of the most commonly-asked questions and answers, complete with expert advice and tips on how to get the most from your Monaco Grand Prix superyacht experience.

How do I rent a yacht at the Monaco Grand Prix?

Yachts lined up at the Monaco Grand Prix

The first thing you will need to do is find a reputable yacht charter broker , who will act as a buffer between you and the yacht owner. They will be able to give you sound advice and information and will ultimately be responsible for organizing your grand prix yacht charter, right down to the very last detail.

Booking a yacht at the Formula One fixture is a complicated process, so be sure to find yourself a broker who has undertaken the procedure before. A broker with the necessary expertise and connections will ensure a smooth and straightforward superyacht experience at the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.

When do I need to book my Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter?

You will need to book your Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter up to eight months in advance if you are looking to secure a berth in Port Hercules. Demand for these berths is extremely high, so you will need to get in touch with your charter broker well ahead of time in order to start the planning process.

How can I book a berth with trackside views?

Yachts lined up at the Monaco Grand Prix

Many luxury yachts based in Monaco hold year-round berths in premium locations that overlook the racetrack. If track views are important to you, you should try to book a yacht that has already secured a desirable trackside berth. This will remove the hassle of trying to secure one such berth yourself.

How long can I rent a yacht for at the Monaco Grand Prix?

The minimum number of days you can rent a yacht over the Monaco Grand Prix is five days and it has to be between Wednesday and Sunday. This is because practice and qualifying sessions begin on Thursday, through to the main race on Sunday. Roads open to the public on Monday.

Superyachts cannot leave the marina throughout the duration of the grand prix. But, guests can easily extend their yacht charter and explore the glittering coastlines of the French Riviera when the racing draws to a close.

What can I do if I can’t berth in Port Hercules?

View of Monaco, France

There are 700 berths in Port Hercules, and they all fill up well in advance for the Monaco Grand Prix. If you are not able to secure one of these coveted slips, don’t panic; there are other places you can berth.

Tucked around the corner from Port Hercules is Port Fontvieille. Though smaller, demand for berths here is much less fierce as you will have to take a tender across to Port Hercules to watch the on-track action. It is recommended that you book a minimum of three months in advance to secure one of the 275 berths.

Alternatively, superyachts can anchor around the Bay of Monaco and, again, take a tender in to watch the racing. Of course, you will not need to book to anchor, but your yacht will not benefit from the facilities available at the marinas. For more details, read our article:  where to berth your yacht during the Monaco Grand Prix .

Please note, if you are coming to Monaco via tender to watch the races, you will need to hold a ticket that allows access to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix or have a hospitality package secured at one of the venues surrounding the track.

How to get on board your superyacht at the Monaco Grand Prix

Can I get off my yacht to watch the races?

As the streets of Monaco make up the grand prix circuit, much of Monte Carlo is closed off during practice and race sessions. At these times, when cars are on the track, access from the land to Port Hercules and vice versa is not possible.

Therefore, those watching the race from Port Hercules will need to ensure they get on board their superyacht before restrictions fall into place. For more information, please read our article in order to find out how to board your superyacht during the Monaco Grand Prix.

How to choose the best berth for the Monaco Grand Prix

Should I consider a Monaco Grand Prix yacht hospitality package?

Revellers on board a yacht at the Monaco Grand Prix

If you do not want to charter a yacht privately, but would still like to step on board a superyacht, you can do so with the help of an F1 yacht hospitality package.

These are a cost-effective option for those who do not wish to book an entire yacht for 5 days and will entitle you access to a superyacht over the course of the races, as well as a host of other advantages including premium drinks, gourmet food and drink and live performances from international DJs. To find out more, read our guide to hospitality packages below.

monaco-yacht-show-prince-albert-ii

This year, there are plenty of Water toys to keep you entertained on sunny days. The Seabob, for example, an electric underwater scooter, lets you admire the underwater scenery at up to 23 kph. Another innovation is the Jet-surf, a motorised board that glides along the surface of the water at 54 kph, offering a thrilling experience for speed enthusiasts.

Head over to the Adventure Area, where the latest innovations in water sports are on display until 28 September, the last day of the Monaco Yacht Show. There’s plenty there to spice up your sea outings.

And if Water toys aren’t enough for you, you can always check out the tenders. The small, elegant and powerful boats are sure to win you over.

During his visit, Prince Albert II received a donation of €53,000 from the Monaco Yacht Show in support of the Prince Albert II Foundation, which helps to protect the oceans.

Marinas and moorings in Monaco

Discover the top Monaco moorings

There are only two ports in Monaco: the huge (and hugely glamorous) Port Hercule, and the charming Port Fontvieille. There are also some excellent marinas in French territory within a very short cruise of Monaco, which we’ve also included in this guide.

Moorings & marinas

Port Hercule Monaco’s Port Hercule is one of the greatest superyacht marinas of the world. Used as a deep water port since Roman times, today the port sits nestled under the steep Monegasque cityscape of high-rises, grand hotels, and the cliff-top palace perched on the Rock of Monaco.

The port has 700 berths, of which 30 are visitor docks according to availability. Port Hercules has 110 berths accommodating yachts over 24m, with its largest berth able to accept a yacht up to 130m in length. Marina depths range from 5m to 40m, so all drafts can be accommodated.

Getting a berth in Monaco is rarely cheap or easy-with major events such as the glamorous Grand Prix in May and the Monaco Yacht Show in September making berths there fiercely contested and the berthing rates not for the faint-hearted. To be sure, getting a berth for the Monaco Grand Prix is one of the great yachting experiences on the planet, when the superyachts gather cheek-by-jowl along the edge of the racetrack, the F1 cars tearing past the assembled yachts crowded almost to sinking-point with cheering people.

Port Hercule is lined with restaurants and bars creating a vibrant atmosphere, while the boutiques, casinos, and Michelin-starred restaurants of Monte Carlo are only a short walk away. Also worth a look is the stunning Yacht Club de Monaco , which was designed by British architect Lord Norman Foster in the shape of a boat.

Port de Fontvieille The other port of Monaco, Port de Fontvieille , lies just around the headland and is much smaller than its famous sister, but this marina is also very beautiful and offers better shelter from easterly swells. Fontvieille marina, crowded with restaurants and overlooked by residents apartment buildings, has a real village feel rather than that of a working marina, and in fact, you’ll have to pop back around the corner to Port Hercules if you want yachting necessities such as fuel or a shipyard. Berths in Port de Fontvieille are reserved mainly for residents so visitor availability is limited.

Ports near Monaco

Port Hercule and Fontveille may be the only two ports in the tiny principality of Monaco, but if you sail just around the corner from Monaco into France in either direction you’ll find some excellent smaller marinas stretched along the steep coastline.

Menton The beautiful town of Menton offers two very good marinas right by the Italian border, and you’ll find berthing rates more competitive here than in most other ports along the Riviera. Both ports have restaurants, a lovely setting and a friendly atmosphere. Port de Menton Garavan is the newer and larger of the two marinas, with 770 berths, of which 170 are public. The marina can accommodate yachts up to 40m in length and 3m in draft. Port Municipal de Menton (also called Le Vieux Port), is the public port of Menton offering 596 berths, of which 100 are reserved for visitors. The port accommodates vessels up to 30m, with a maximum draft of 6m.

Cap d’Ail While it’s in French territory, Cap d’Ail Marina, Port de Plaisance de Cap d'Ail , is so close to Monaco that the only road access is actually through Monaco rather than France. This is a charming little deep water port catering for yachts up to 60 m as well as lots of small local boats. It’s a friendly, calm and convivial marina with less bustle and than neighbouring Monaco.

Beaulieu-sur-Mer The pretty town of Beaulieu-sur-Mer is only 5nm from Monaco in the direction of Nice , and has two marinas, the large and vibrant Port de Beaulieu and the small and picturesque Port de Fourmis . Port de Beaulieu caters for 750 vessels up to 25m in length and with a maximum draft of 5m. It has excellent facilities and a brilliant selection of restaurants and yachting businesses right in the port, creating a wonderful atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. Port de Fourmis is a small and very pretty marina sitting under some magnificent villas. Port des Fourmis has 260 berths for small vessels with a maximum length of 12m and a maximum draft of 1.5m.

Cap Ferrat Port Saint Jean Cap Ferrat has 581 moorings for yachts up to 30m in length and a maximum draft of 4m. While there are 205 public berths in this number, it can be difficult to get a berth in the busy summer months. Cap Ferrat is a very prestigious harbour in the shadow of some grandiose villas and has a charming pedestrianised area with upmarket shops and restaurants nearby.

Villefranche La Darse Marina : The spectacularly pretty deepwater bay at Villefranche has a small capacity marina which can accept yachts up to 34 m. There are 540 moorings with a maximum draught of 4m, and 5 superyacht berths. While it is generally difficult to find a berth in La Darse Marina in the summertime as the berths are privately owned, the bay also offers wonderful anchorage that is very sheltered in most conditions (with the exception of a strong southerly).

Summary There are plenty of boat berths in Monaco and in marinas along the coastline nearby, making this area an ideal place to stop and explore this gorgeous part of the French Riviera. With a glamorous address, stunning scenery and plenty of yachting facilities and infrastructure, Monaco is a wonderful destination on your yachting holiday. Just remember to book early!

property markets in monaco

The sky’s the limit: Exploring the unusual influx of new property in Monaco

It’s onwards and very much upwards for Monaco’s booming property market, says Ruth Bloomfield.

When house-hunters come to Monaco for the first time, they understandably expect to be blown away by the sheer luxury of one of the most expensive strips of real estate on earth.

The reality, however, can be something of a let-down. The vast majority of homes in the tiny principality are compact apartments within dated post-war apartment buildings. The only extraordinary thing about them is their price tags – average prices in the principality are well over €50,000 (£42,800) per square metre and twice the price of New York or Geneva.

“Most of Monaco was built in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s,” says Irene Luke, head of Savills Monaco. “A lot of those buildings are looking tired. Gradually, apartments and buildings are being renovated, but it is true that when people come here, they are a bit disappointed by what €50 million buys.”

For decades, a chronic undersupply of property has underpinned Monaco’s real-estate market, irrespective of the quality of the stock and what is going on in the world around it. Monaco’s diminutive size – it measures slightly over 200 hectares – means new developments are rare and when they happen, tend to be small in scale.

An exception to this rule is Mareterra, an ultra-luxury €2 billion development of 120 flats and  14 houses on a 5.7-hectare strip of reclaimed coastline between Port Hercule and Larvotto Beach. In addition to new homes, Mareterra has a marina, a park, a waterfront promenade, shops and a public square.

The seven-year building project formally completes in November and most of its homes have already been sold – at prices reported to have approached €100,000 per square metre. Half of them, says a spokeswoman for the development, have been sold to first-time Monaco buyers.

Despite this unusual influx of new property into the Monaco housing market – not to mention the global headwinds caused by inflation and instability in Europe and the Middle East which have dragged many property hotspots into negative growth territory – Monaco remains in the black. And while the Principality’s 2023 growth was muted at an 0.9 per cent, this is a highly nuanced market with some strong outperformers.

Larvotto, parts of which were built on land reclaimed from the sea after the Second World War, is the principality’s most expensive neighbourhood thanks to its beaches and front-row homes. Its prices increased by six per cent per square metre in 2023 to an average €65,000 per square metre, says Luke.

Jardin Exotique, which is convenient for the French border, and La Condamine saw the highest price per square metre growth of 19 per cent and 22 per cent, respectively. Jardin Exotique’s boom can partly be explained by the sale of the 66 new homes at L’Exotique, which was completed in 2022. This development has hoisted local prices to €41,600 per square metre.

La Condamine is more affordable than Larvotto at €54,000 per square metre, but still has good sea views and amenities, which helps explain its growth. Luke believes average prices will hold steady, and that records will continue to be broken within Monaco. “Mareterra is sold out, off plan, and we are starting to see resales priced at €100,000 per square metre,” she says.

Buyers in the Principality, traditionally approaching or past retirement age, have started getting younger. “They are not ‘young’ young”, says Luke, but “maybe between 45 and 60. They are coming here with children; the schools are full and expanding.”

Luke has seen plenty of British buyers over the past year, not just because of the scrapping of the UK’s tax-friendly non-dom system as much as because of fears of further political change. “They are thinking that a Labour government is not going to be friendly to wealthy people,” she says.

These buyers are joined by Italians and Scandinavians, as well as a smattering of Americans – interesting because these buyers will not benefit from the low-tax environment that traditionally draws the wealthy to Monaco. “They want to be somewhere safe that is in Europe,” said Luke, highlighting geopolitical security as yet another draw to living in the glamorous Principality.

Olympus: Angebot in Monaco

Olympus : Angebot in Monaco

Bold: Weit gereist in diesem Jahr

Bold : Weit gereist in diesem Jahr
