Boat Owner’s Guide to Hurricanes: Preparing for the Storm

Hurricanes can pose a significant threat to boats and their owners. Whether you’re a seasoned mariner or a new boat owner, understanding how to prepare for a hurricane is crucial for protecting your investment and ensuring safety. This guide will cover everything from preparation and securing your boat to recovery and repairs after the storm.

1. Understanding Hurricane Risks

Hurricanes can bring high winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges that can cause severe damage to boats, marinas, and coastal areas. Knowing the categories of hurricanes can help you gauge the potential impact:

  • Category 1: Winds 74-95 mph. Minimal damage.
  • Category 2: Winds 96-110 mph. Moderate damage.
  • Category 3: Winds 111-129 mph. Major damage.
  • Category 4: Winds 130-156 mph. Catastrophic damage.
  • Category 5: Winds 157 mph or higher. Complete devastation.

Price of Preparation

Preparing for a hurricane can involve various costs, including securing supplies and making modifications to your boat. Budget around $200 to $1,000, depending on your boat’s size and your level of preparation.

2. Pre-Hurricane Preparation

A. stay informed.

Monitor weather forecasts and hurricane alerts. Use reliable sources such as the National Hurricane Center (NHC) or local weather stations. Apps like NOAA Weather Radar or Hurricane Tracker can provide real-time updates.

B. Create a Hurricane Plan

  • Know Your Evacuation Routes: Have a plan for where to go and how to get there.
  • Select a Safe Location for Your Boat: This could be a hurricane hole, a secured marina, or a dry dock.
  • Notify Family and Friends: Ensure they know your plans and whereabouts.

C. Prepare Your Boat

Inspect and maintain your boat:.

  • Ensure all equipment is in good working condition.
  • Check your bilge pumps and batteries.
  • Replace any worn-out lines or rigging.

Remove or Secure Loose Items:

  • Take down sails, biminis, and other removable gear.
  • Store any loose items inside the cabin or remove them entirely.

Use Proper Tie-Down Techniques:

  • Use heavy-duty lines to tie your boat securely to the dock.
  • Consider using chafe gear to protect lines from abrasion.

Consider a Storm Surge Plan:

  • If you’re in a high-risk area, plan for higher ground or a trailer for your boat.

D. Stock Up on Supplies

Gather essential supplies such as:

  • Non-perishable food and water (1 gallon per person per day)
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Portable phone charger
  • Duct tape and tarps for temporary repairs

Cost of Supplies

Budget about $100 to $300 for emergency supplies.

3. During the Hurricane

A. stay updated.

Keep monitoring weather updates and storm progress. Use a battery-powered radio if the power goes out.

B. Secure Your Boat

If you have time before the storm hits:

  • Double-check all lines and fenders.
  • Remove any items that can become projectiles in high winds.

C. Evacuate if Necessary

If local authorities advise evacuation, follow their instructions immediately. Your safety is paramount.

4. Post-Hurricane Recovery

A. assessing damage.

After the storm, it’s vital to assess the condition of your boat and dock:

  • Check for Leaks: Look for water intrusion or damage to the hull.
  • Inspect the Rigging: Ensure that mast, sails, and lines are intact.
  • Evaluate Electronics: Check all electrical systems for functionality.

B. Cleaning and Repairs

  • Clean Up: Remove any debris from your boat and dock.
  • Make Temporary Repairs: Use tarps or duct tape to cover any openings.
  • Contact a Professional: If significant repairs are needed, consider hiring a marine surveyor or repair service.

C. Insurance Considerations

Check your boat insurance policy to understand coverage for storm-related damage. Costs can vary significantly:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Typically ranges from $300 to $1,500 annually, depending on the boat’s value and coverage limits.
  • Hurricane Deductibles: Many policies have separate deductibles for hurricane damage, often ranging from 2% to 5% of the boat’s insured value.

5. Conclusion

Being a boat owner during hurricane season requires vigilance and preparation. By following this guide, you can mitigate the risks associated with hurricanes and protect your boat and loved ones. Remember, preparation is the key to weathering the storm.

For more resources, check with local boating organizations, marinas, and insurance agents to ensure you have the most comprehensive plan in place. Stay safe and happy boating!

How To Develop A Hurricane Prep Plan

It's said that every minute you spend planning saves 10 minutes in execution. When a hurricane threatens, you’ll be glad your plan is ready to go.

The first step in developing a preparation plan is to review your dock contract for language that may require you to take certain steps or to leave the marina when a hurricane threatens. Some marinas require boat owners to have and present a hurricane plan of their own. Ask the marina manager what hurricane plan the marina has in place. Planning where your boat will best survive a storm and what protective steps you need to take should begin before hurricane season.

Our BoatUS Marine Insurance claim files show that the probability of damage can be reduced considerably by choosing the most storm-worthy location possible and having your plan ready long before a hurricane warning is posted. You may be able to join a "Hurricane Club," which would allow you to have your boat hauled whenever a hurricane warning is posted. These usually require signing up long before the first hurricanes and sometimes require a nonrefundable deposit, but you'll be among the first to be hauled.

Note that BoatUS Marine Insurance will pay half the cost, up to $1,000, to have your boat hauled prior to a hurricane, moved by a professional to a safer location, or for the professional execution of a hurricane plan. BoatUS will also lower the named-storm deductible for boat owners who can show they have properly prepared their boats (photos are a good idea). Also, call your insurance company to verify you have the right coverage and that you're in the right coverage area. Once a hurricane is threatening, it's too late to get or change coverage. Now is the time to check.

FWC cautions boat owners as Tropical Storm Helene approaches

With Tropical Storm Helene predicted to make landfall in Florida on Thursday, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is urging all vessel owners to secure their watercraft before the storm reaches the coast.

With Tropical Storm Helene is predicted to make landfall in Florida on Thursday, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is urging all vessel owners to secure their watercraft before the storm reaches the coast.

FWC Southwest Region Public Information Officer Bradley Johnson highlighted the importance of moving any vessel, from kayak to fishing boat, away from tidal waters and increasing security measures to limit damages. He offered crucial tips for those who are unable to trailer their boat.

“If your vessel must stay in a marina, we recommend you double all lines and rig cross line springs fore and aft of your vessel," he said. "And attach those lines as high on the pilings as possible to anticipate tidal rise or surge.”

Johnson also recommended that anchored vessels use multiple anchors with at least a 10-to-1 scope. Sails or canvas coverings must be secured indoors, along with other small loose items such as life rings or life jackets.

In the event of flooding, swamping or other damages, Johnson and the FWC advise boat owners to charge all vessel batteries, obtain backup power sources and turn off any electronics that may drain them so bilge pumps can run through the storm to mitigate flood damage.

Johnson also stressed the importance of having vessel registration and insurance information readily available in the event recovery or reimbursement is necessary.

“Make sure you have all that paperwork," he said. "Make sure you can get your vessels secure and try and get it off the water. And then know that after the storm, if you have any issues, you can report those issues to FWC, and we're here to help in any way we can.”

If your vessel has an emergency, call 911 or use your onboard VHF radio on channel 16 to report the issue.

“We're going to be out there with all other first responders, assisting with that initial search and rescue,” Johnson said. “After that, we can help locate your vessel. We can help you deal with a damaged vessel. If your vessel sunk or you had severe damage from the storm, we can help give you your options.”

You can call FWC at (888) 404-3922. Additional information and educational resources for vessel owners can be found at its website: https://myfwc.com/boating/ .

Tropical Storm Helene is approaching Florida: What to document for insurance before the storm

Having your home insured is key incase a storm hits. But a lot of people aren't sure what their policy does, or if they have the right coverage.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30 with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Even those who do know how their policy works and what it covers still might not think to prep "before" pictures of their home and property until they're notified a storm is on its way.

As of Tuesday, Sept. 24, the eighth named storm of the 2024 hurricane season is headed for Florida as a tropical storm and is expected to become a hurricane and make landfall somewhere on Florida's Gulf Coast sometime Thursday.

"Forecasters also are warning that the size of what could become Hurricane Helene Wednesday means  impacts could be felt hundreds of miles  from the storm's center," The Florida Times-Union reported in a Tuesday morning tropics update.

"Potential impacts include hurricane-force winds, life-threatening storm surge, heavy rain, flooding and a risk for tropical tornadoes."

Here are some things you can do before the storm hits to make sure you get the best insurance payout possible , should your home or property be damaged.

Is Helene going to be a hurricane? Where in Florida will Helene hit?

Helene was named Tropical Storm as of Tuesday afternoon, but forecasters expect the storm to strengthen before its predicted landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast.

The storm is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane and could make landfall in Florida's Big Bend region. This will be the Big Bend's third major hurricane in just over a year. The area saw flooding and damage with Hurricane Debby in August and devastating impacts during and after Hurricane Idalia, which made landfall there just a year earlier.

How to prep your house, and insurance policy, for a tropical storm

Aside from the obvious ways to physically prepare your home for any expected damage — boarding up windows, having sand bags, securing patio furniture, etc. — there is an often-overlooked hurricane prep step that could save you money.

Familiarizing yourself with a few key things in your home and flood insurance policies will help you understand what costs you are responsible for covering should your home be damaged. And documenting the condition of your home and most valuable possessions could make the process of filing a claim after the storm much easier.

What is the most important thing to pay attention to in a homeowners' insurance policy?

If disaster hits, you don’t want to be left in the dark about any gaps in your policy coverage. For example, if you’re a new homeowner, you might not know that flood and home insurance are typically sold separately. Most home insurance policies don’t cover damages sustained from flooding.

To familiarize yourself with what your policy or policies do and don’t cover and if there are costs you might be responsible for covering after the storm, re-read the “Exclusions” and “Duties After Loss” sections of your home or flood insurance policies.

Homeowners’ insurance policies usually cover damage from strong winds, including strong wind from hurricanes. But your policy might have a separate deductible for hurricane damage.

Insurance during hurricane season: Can you get homeowners and flood insurance in Florida during hurricane season? What to know

How can I get the most out of my insurance claim?

Don’t wait until your belongings are gone to find out how valuable they were. If your insurance company has to assess any post-storm damage to your home or property, they will probably ask if you have any proof or documentation of its condition before the storm.

Whether you can give that to your insurer will likely determine how much compensation you get back for damages.

Before the storm hits or before you evacuate, use your phone camera to take a long, slow video of your home and property to document what it looks like when everything is in its place. Take photos of your home and property as well.

If you want to be really thorough, make a detailed list of your valuable belongings and include receipts for more expensive items like appliances, furniture and electronics. At the very least, you may want to take pictures of these items to be able to prove that they were not damaged before the storm.

What should you do with important papers when planning for a disaster?

Don’t rely on paper copies of your most important documents, including your home or flood insurance policy documents.

Most Floridians know to keep their insurance policies, family medical information, deeds, wills and other important paperwork in a fire-proof, water-proof box or safe deposit box. But getting to those physical copies can be challenging if you’re in an emergent situation.

Scanning and uploading your insurance policies and other important documents to a cloud storage service like Google Drive, iCloud or Dropbox allows you to access them as long as you have cell service or access to Wi-Fi.

Tropical Storm Helene winds now up to 60 mph as it nears Yucatan Peninsula

Portrait of Brandon Girod

Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine strengthened into Tropical Storm Helene Tuesday morning as it begins picking up speed and continues its trek north-northwest toward the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center's latest advisory .

The probable path of the storm's center shifted further east overnight, pointing it more toward the eastern Florida Panhandle and Big Bend area.

Hurricane and tropical storm watches have been issued across Florida's Gulf Coast, stretching as far west as the Walton County line to as far south as the Dry Tortugas.

Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 timeline: When will Tropical Cyclone Nine become Hurricane Helene and make landfall? Here's a timeline

Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 61 counties ahead of what could be a Category 3 Hurricane Helene by the time it makes landfall Thursday .

Florida Panhandle and Big Bend residents should continue monitoring the storm as it develops and make sure their hurricane preparations are in order as soon as possible.

Here is the latest on Tropical Storm Helene.

Tropical Storm Helene 8 p.m. update: Tropical Storm Helene winds now up to 60 mph

Tropical Storm Helene has strengthened again with maximum wind speeds up to 60 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center's latest update .

Later tonight, Helene is expected to turn toward the northwest before it begins a general northward motion on Wednesday. It will continue on that trajectory through Friday.

Tropical Storm Helene will pass near the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday at near hurricane strength. The NHC forecasts that Hurricane Helene will form later Wednesday and could become a major hurricane on Thursday.

President Joe Biden approves Florida emergency declaration ahead of Tropical Storm Helene

President Joe Biden approved federal funding for Florida communities that could be impacted by Tropical Storm Helene, which is expected to make landfall around the Big Bend area late Thursday.

Gov. Ron DeSantis declared  a state of emergency for 41 of Florida's 67 counties in advance of " Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine ," according to an executive order released Monday.

On Tuesday, he expanded that to another 20 counties , for a total of 61 counties.

The president authorized FEMA to coordinate disaster relief efforts in the Sunshine State. Federal funding will be available to state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency protective measures limited to direct federal assistance and reimbursement for mass care, including evacuation and shelter support, according to a FEMA news release.

The assistance will be available for Bay, Calhoun, Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, Dixie, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hernando, Hillsborough, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lee, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Madison, Manatee, Monroe, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota, Suwannee, Taylor and Wakulla counties.

Federal funding will also be available to provide emergency protective measures limited to direct federal assistance for Alachua, Bradford, Columbia, Escambia, Hamilton, Holmes, Marion, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Sumter, Union, Walton and Washington counties.

Tropical Storm Helene 5 p.m. update: Helene continues to strengthen

Tropical Storm Helene strengthened again late Monday afternoon as its maximum sustained wind speeds reached 50 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center's latest advisory.

Helene is expected to intensify and be near hurricane strength when it passes near the Yucatan Peninsula coast on Wednesday. It will continue to rapidly intensify and grow in size once it formally reaches the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Helene's large size will likely cause an extensive area to be affected by the storm's hazards.

The tropical storm is still moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph, and it's expected to turn northwest later tonight. By Wednesday morning, it will start following a northward notion through Friday. It's expected to reach the Big Bend coast of Florida by late Thursday.

Tropical Storm Helene 2 p.m. update: Helene continues to organize

Tropical Storm Helene continues to organize over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Helene has been wobbling now that it has become more defined. The storm is expected to turn toward the northwest later Tuesday before it moves north to north-northeastward at a faster rate on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Tuesday night, Helene will move across the far northwestern Caribbean Sea to near the northeastern coast of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. It will potentially reach Florida's Gulf Coast late Thursday.

Wind speeds have maintained at 45 mph with higher gusts, and Hurricane Helene is still expected to form Wednesday.

The tropical storm warning issued for Grand Cayman was discontinued, but hurricane and storm surge watches remain in effect for portions of the Florida Gulf Coast.

Tropical Storm Helene 11 a.m. update: Tropical Storm Helene forms over Caribbean Sea

Tropical Storm Helene formed over the northwestern Caribbean Sea Tuesday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center's latest advisory.

Tropical storm warnings and watches have been issued to more portions of the western Florida coast as Helene picks up speed and begins to wedge itself between the Cancun Peninsula and the western tip of Cuba.

Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft shows that Helene has formed a well-defined center of circulation and maximum wind speeds shot up to 45 mph with higher gusts.

Helene is expected to continue strengthening and will likely become a hurricane by Wednesday. By Thursday, Helene could become a major hurricane before it makes landfall near the Florida Big Bend area.

What's new with Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine? 8 a.m. update

Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine began picking up steam, moving north-northwest at about 9 mph, but there has been little development so far. Strengthening is expected to continue over the next few days as the storm reaches the Gulf of Mexico, which will fuel rapid intensification.

The storm's path shifted east overnight, putting its sights more toward Florida's Big Bend and the eastern Panhandle area. Hurricane and tropical storm watches have been issued across much of Florida's Gulf and western coasts.

Florida Panhandle and Big Bend residents shouldn't be confused by what could be misconstrued as a lull in development, however. AccuWeather still expects the storm to make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane.

A hurricane warning has been issued in Florida, from the Anclote River to Mexico Beach. A storm surge warning has also been issued from Flamingo to Indian Pass, Florida, including Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor.

Tropical storm warnings and watches have also been issued and extended for many other parts of Florida.

Where is Tropical Storm Helene now?

The system is moving north near 9 mph. It's expected to begin moving northwestward on Tuesday and Tuesday night before it shifts toward a faster northward or north-northeast trajectory over the next couple of days.

  • Tropical Cyclone Nine is about 115 miles east-southeast of Cozumel, Mexico
  • Tropical Cyclone Nine is about 145 miles south of the western tip of Cuba
  • Maximum sustained winds: 60 mph
  • Present movement: West-northwest at 12 mph

Tropical Storm Helene's expected impacts

Rainfall : Helene is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 4 to 8 inches over western Cuba and the Cayman Islands with isolated totals around 12 inches. Over the eastern Yucatan Peninsula, 4 to 6 inches of rain are expected with isolated totals over 8 inches. This rainfall brings a risk of considerable flooding.

Over the Southeastern U.S., Helene is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 4 to 8 inches with isolated totals around 12 inches. This rainfall will likely result in areas of considerable flash and urban flooding, with areas of significant river flooding likely, including the risk of landslides in areas of steep terrain in the southern Appalachians.

Storm surge : The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water could reach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated areas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide:

  • Ochlockonee River to Chassahowitzka: 10-15 ft
  • Chassahowitzka to Anclote River: 6-10 ft
  • Indian Pass to Ochlockonee River: 5-10 ft
  • Anclote River to Middle of Longboat Key: 5-8 ft
  • Tampa Bay: 5-8 ft
  • Middle of Longboat Key to Englewood: 4-7 ft
  • Englewood to Bonita Beach: 3-5 ft
  • Charlotte Harbor: 3-5 ft

Storm surge could raise water levels by as much as 2 to 4 feet above normal tide levels in areas of onshore winds along the southern coast of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, including the Isle of Youth.

Storm surge could raise water levels by as much as 2 to 4 feet above ground level in areas of onshore winds within the warning area along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Wind : Hurricane conditions are expected in the hurricane warning area in Mexico on Wednesday. Hurricane conditions are expected within the U.S. hurricane warning area late Thursday. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin in the tropical storm warning area Florida on Wednesday and spread northward through Thursday. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the tropical storm watch area beginning Thursday.

Surf : Swells generated by Helene will affect the southern coast of Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico during the next couple of days. Swells will spread northward toward the west coast of Florida and the northeastern Gulf Coast on Wednesday and Thursday. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.

Gulfport boat owners impacted by Debby now preparing for Helene impacts

Boat owners prepare for storm surge.

Jordan Bowen reports

GULFPORT, Fla. - Debby’s destruction is still on display several weeks later in Gulfport . As vessel owners prepare for yet another storm, several overturned sailboats still remain, serving as a reminder of why it's so important for owners to secure their boats.

"They've been scrambling. You know, they've been scrambling. So you'll see the dinghies out here. Now, today's Tuesday, tomorrow's Wednesday. Wednesday is the big day to finish all the preparation for the sailboats. And then some of the things will be trailer out," Captain Noreen Smith said.

Smith, who’s been a boating captain for the last 15 years, spent the day Tuesday helping owners with anything they might need ahead of Helene.

RELATED: Pinellas County leaders anticipating 'life-threatening' storm surge from Helene

"The anchor, it should be on a chain, should be heavy enough for each particular boat that's out there. And the scope, the length of the line, most of the time in a storm that's coming like this hurricane, it should be double doubled up on the front. Bough one on the rear," Smith said.

hurricane yacht

To also prevent boats from coming ashore, many owners are anchoring the boats far away from the shore near the Bayway Bridge and next to tall buildings, which Smith said will help block the strong winds from pushing boats on to the shore.

During Debby, some owners lost their dinghies to access their boats, so Tuesday many worked together to help out their small tight-knit boating community, which has already been rocked by one storm this hurricane season.

MORE: Tropical Storm Helene: Pinellas County updates & information

"We're all concerned, this looks to be bigger than what Debby did," Smith said.

Going into the storm, some boaters said they have put cameras on their boats, so they can monitor what goes on during the storm. Wednesday, Smith plans to help the rest of the boaters remove all their dinghies from the water.
