Very interesting to see the photographs of the building of the Extrovert 22. I was working at Linklaters then as Contracts Manager. The fist boat went to Brian Cook at Royal Northumberland Yacht Club and tjhe second was Dalton Lionklater’s own boat. I well remember doing the Tamatin series with Dalton, living aboard and freezing each night as the boat had no insulation at that time.

Happy memories hey! Do you still have contact with Dalton? Best wishes Julian

I left Linklaters in about 1980 and moved to Scotland in about 1991. So lost contact with Dalton. I believe that he died a few years ago.

Great to see other Extrovert 22 pictures. I have one myself. Last sailed on the West Coast of Scotland 18 years ago and has sat on a trailer ever since. Family now moving on so hope to start restoring and getting back on the water soon. I’m going to need a new mast though. Ideas on where to get one would be welcome?

Great to hear from you. I think Seldon would be the best bet. Might be a good opportunity to upgrade the rig if you are planning new sails as well. If you would like to discuss feel free to e mail me on: [email protected] Merry Christmas.

Updating my Extrovert ( E.T. ) at the moment. Bought in early 80,s at Holy Island. Should be back in the water this year.

Hi David, Would love to hear more and see any pictures if you have any.

Aluminium boats - maintenance

Hello. I've recently bought a small aluminimum yacht (5083 2.6mm & 5mm) called an Extrovert 22. A few were made in the early 1980s. Just wondered what people did who have owned these or other ally boats as part of care and maintenance for these type of hulls. I'm particularly concerned with anode protection for electrolysis and galvanic corrosion as this boat will be used in a sea/river eastuary, albeit dry sailed from a dipping trailer. It does not appear to have ever had an anode fitted. Also what preparations for antifoul as I am currently in the process of ripping all the coatings off below the waterline to enable thorough inspection. The first coat appears to be some kind of red paint rather than the atomic yellow etch primer I was expecting. This one doesnt seem to have done too badly after 37 years with only light corrosion markings here and there where the paint has previously failed. Thanks in advance. David

Unlikely any anode required, particularly if dry sailed. Galvanic corrosion will only occur if you have two different metals together in aa wet environment. So you might get corrosion if there are any stainless fastenings, although they are usually bedded in a paste to minimise this. If it has survived 37 years then unlikely to be a problem. For paint follow the paint manufacturers instructions. antifouling needs to specifically for aluminium together with its own primer. Trilux is the International type, but other manufacturers will also have suitable paints.

Thanks Tranona. I'm looking to minimise paint as much as possible, leaving her as a bare metal hull. Maybe even below too waterline too depending on how much shes in the water and on whether I find any unwanted surprises with the paint removed. The dipping trailer has rubber insulators on the pads, presumably to avoid dissimilar metal contact issues (except the cast iron drop keel which sits on the trailer).

Angus beat me to it... Absolutely no copper to be left touching the ally. Copper eats ally for breakfast. Lost watch button cells are deathly too, there are tales of them eating a hole right through. Next up is mixed metal. Lets face it you are going to have stainless somewhere. Again an absolute must... there is some very nasty barrier cream that really ought to be applied to all stainless fittings where they interface to the ally every time they are inspected and reassembled (which ought to be on every few year basis) If you ever need repairs or patches ensure that the welder knows about different ally alloys.... Mix alloys at your peril. A regular inspection for pitting is a good idea. Now for the good news. Ally (on its own) dont rot, ever. The first thing it does on exposure to oxygen is anodise itself to a hard, crystalline coating. But bare ally looks a bit like dirty concrete.

Aluminium yachts made of marine grade aluminium, like your 5083, only need anodes to protect against dissimilar metals. Thus, it is not unusual to see an aluminium yacht with no hull anodes. This is not a cause for concern. However, I understand you have an iron keel. That is a very large lump of dissimilar metal. Ideally the ballast would be encapsulated. With iron and aluminium exposed to water it would be normal to fit several anodes. Two anodes on the iron keel and two on the hull near the keel might be typical (aluminium or magnesium anodes for freshwater). The iron keel and aluminium hull should be kept electrically isolated, but this is difficult to do over the long term and the anodes will provide some back up protection. If your boat has no problems after 37 years, this is obviously not urgent or even perhaps essential. Marine aluminium is almost completely corrosion free on its own, but you do need to be very careful with large lumps of dissimilar metal. So I would try to maintain the original isolation between the iron and aluminium and fit some anodes as well. Etch primer is not commonly used these days (although it still a good system).

AngusMcDoon said: The Extravert is designed so that when the keel is raised it is electrically isolated from the hull. Normal practice is to raise the keel when the boat is left. It's stable enough like this. There is no inboard engine either so that removes an issue of bronze prop. The only anodes Extraverts ever have are hanging ones. These are taken in when sailing. If the OP is only ever dry sailing then they won't be needed either. Click to expand...
noelex said: Yes, I agree. Maintaining isolation between the iron on the aluminium is the most important factor. If this can be done, the anodes are unnecessary. However, it is hard to retain complete electrical isolation from heavy structural elements that need to move, like the keel. Anodes are good insurance from this sort of situation, especially in a 37 year old yacht. A simple test that can be done out of the water (but insulated from the trailer) is put the probes of a multimeter on an exposed bit of the iron keel and aluminium keel and hull. The result should be infinite resistance, if the isolation is working Click to expand...

I enquired about a slightly larger version of this when I was buying my boat about 4 years ago. It was an aluminium Everitt quarter tonner called Tumbling Dice. Very similar lines but just a bit larger and also fractional rig. In the end I decided it was a bit bare bones for my needs and bought a small GRP benny instead.

Cheers guys for all the useful input on this subject on aluminium boats. Much appreciated. I have seen this photo of Extro-Bitionist before and is what sold it for me. A small piece of history is that these boats are closely related to one my father used to own during the 1980s called Silver Dream Racer (SDR). We only had it for a short time before it was sold on, hence the reason for my questions today regarding maintenance. I'm not sure what happened to SDR and would love to know what where it is now. I had heard it lost its keel in North Wales, although this is only a rumour. Silver Dream Racer had a fixed keel whereas my boat has the drop keep as mentioned by AngusMcDoon.

talking of hanging anodes over the side - how are these attached? I've never seen one of these kind of anodes although I heard that this is sometimes done on OVNIs and the like? What kind of cable is attached to them? Im assuming some kind of ally cable seeing as copper is a no no?

A said corrosion is most likely to be evident in the bilges inside outwards. Especially where water can collect. Not sure of the corrosion process but it is very common. Lots of ali dinghies and mobos here in Oz so many show this problem when left on trailer. good luck olewill

Extroverts usually have 2. When sailing one goes in the anchor well & the other in the cockpit locker under the tiller.

Thanks AngusMcDoon. I now know what to look for. Never seen these before. It makes sense having one stored in the anchor well with all the wet chain.

  • 19 Aug 2017

If you want, you can make your own hanging anodes for very little cost. All you need is some plastic coated stainless lifeline wire and an old anode (saildrive anodes are good). It is a good way to reuse something that would otherwise just be thrown away. Remove some of the plastic coating around the wire. Wrap the wire around a large bolt and washer and bolt the bare wire to the zinc. Sand the zinc where it meet the wire to ensure good contact. Periodically check the electrical connection for low resistance.

Silver Dream Racer was a Julian Everitt design, built for the 1980 Mini Ton Cup in Scotland. She was a stretched version of his Extrovert 22 production boat which was built in aluminium. The mini tonners are having a bit of a revival on the south coast similar to the 1/4 & 1/2 ton classes but not sure where SDR is now.

I've just purchased one of the Extrovert 22 production boats. Around 20 were built by Linklatters in North Shields. Similar to an E-boat with a fractional rig and raised coachroof. I can't find much information about any others that might be sailing but it's a good looking boat - haven't sailed it yet but looking forward to having a go.

Hi Chris. I have an Extrovert 22. Cracking boat. Bombproof. Sailed all over the West Coast of Scotland with no problems. MJ

Hi Mark great to hear from you! Would be great to stay in touch and compare notes / tips / photos along the way. Am busy removing soggy plywood and headlining from the inside at the moment. Busy winter ahead!

Hi Mark, Andrew - I used to own one a few years ago. Most of the original fleet were based at the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club at Blythe - bought mine from up there and moved her down to Cornwall. She was last seen in Bristol. Yes - great to sail and mind boggingly strong ! There are a couple of others on the South Coast. Well worth bringing one up to scratch. Also have photos etc. Cheers, Adrian - [email protected]

BTC-22: Half the size, double the fun

David Harding

  • David Harding
  • June 12, 2020

As the first sporty 22-footer we have seen from a British builder in a long time, the BTC-22 is set to fill a significant gap in the market, as David Harding found out

A BTC-22 on the Solent

For 22ft, the BTC has a generous cockpit and a pleasing turn of speed to rival larger boats. Credit: David Harding

Product Overview

  • Sprightly performance
  • Surprisingly roomy accommodation
  • Good range
of options
  • Some production details still
being refined
  • Footbrace needed in cockpit for crew
  • Keel winch needs lower gearing

Time was when anyone wanting a lively 22ft (6.7m) family cruiser with a lifting keel was almost spoiled for choice.

Popular home-produced examples included the E-Boat, Evolution 22, Seal 22, Anderson 22, Atlanta Catch 22, Fox Terrier, Eclipse, Limbo 6.6, Timpenny 670 and Skipper 700.

Then there were alternatives such as the Jaguar 21, Parker 21 and Parker 235, not to mention European offerings such as the Etap 22.

So what happened? Well, for some time now, would-be buyers in the UK in search of a trailable boat of this size have had a choice between a European lake-sailer and something that strikes a rather more traditional note.

Modern trailable all-rounders suited to British coastal waters have been few and far between, leaving those in search of one to find and import a boat themselves and then face the possibility of having the only one in
the country.

Given the versatility of a good 22-footer – capable of crossing the Atlantic, as the Anderson and E-Boat did, yet small enough to trail to new cruising grounds – it’s refreshing that, at long last, a British builder has introduced a new one.

Down below on a BTC-22

It comes in the form of the BTC-22, designed by Buckley Yacht Design and built in Southampton by Composite Mouldings (CML), which is also run by the Buckley family.

Although CML might be an unfamiliar name to many, it was born out of Blondecell (Tradewinds, Cromarty 36 et al) and has built over 400 Hawk 20s for Reid Marine.

Supplying composite mouldings to builders such as Oyster, CML is experienced in resin infusion, structural analysis and the use of carbon- fibre and aramids.

A man sailing a BTC-22 in the Solent

With this sort of experience to draw on, as well as involvement in the design of Alex Thompson’s Hugo Boss, the combined forces of CML and Buckley Yacht Design should be more than capable of producing a trailable 22.

But what sort of boat is the BTC?

I sailed the first production version to find out.

Despite having only recently appeared in production form, the BTC-22 has been in development for some time.

I sailed her when she was first launched in 2016 as the RTC-22, and again two years later following refinements in several areas.

THE TEST VERDICT

We have needed something like the BTC-22 for a long time.

The demise of the earlier British-built 22s and, more recently, the discontinuation of boats such as the Elan 210, has left a gap in the market for a wholesome, versatile, trailable boat of this size that offers space, pace, economy and simplicity.

BTC-22

Despite a north-westerly wind, gusting 30 knots at times, the swing-keeler coped well. Credit: David Harding

Many of the European lake-sailers I have tested have lacked stiffness and felt uncomfortable in lively conditions, especially at sea, while the alternative ‘trad and tan’ approach doesn’t appeal to everyone.

After several years of development, the BTC is still a ‘work in progress’ because CML and Buckley Yacht Design have been working on her alongside other projects.

At long last, however, it looks as though she’s nearly there and I’m sure plenty of people will be ready
for a boat like this.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

With the choice of options and keels the BTC has the potential to appeal to a wide audience.

I would like to sail a production version in choppier waters to see how snugly the swing keel fits in its case, because keel ‘judder’ when you bounce over a wave,
and banging when the pressure comes off downwind,
are sometimes mildly disconcerting features of swing-keelers.

CML has the experience and technical know-how to cope with such challenges and, on the whole, construction looks reassuring.

BTC-22

The BTC is undoubtedly the epitome of the trailable 22, and a reminder of why boats of this type were once so popular. Credit: David Harding

The core in the hull and deck incorporates PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) derived from 1,400 recycled plastic bottles, so you
can even put a tick in the ‘green’ box.

Chosen for its structural qualities quite apart from any environmental considerations, PET is also used in the resin in the
deck, while the hull laminate incorporates vinylester
and E-Glass.

All told, there’s a lot to like about the BTC-22. Most of the bits that matter look and feel robust and solidly engineered. As she’s also roomy, well mannered, pretty quick and sensibly priced, I see little to hold her back.

Review of Invader 22

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

Unknown keel type

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.14 - 1.24 meter (3.74 - 4.04 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Vire 7 engine

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Invader 22 is 2.54, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Invader 22 is about 94 kg/cm, alternatively 530 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 94 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 530 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 16m 2 (172 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Ocean Explorer 22 M

extrovert 22 yacht

MAKE THE TRIP YOU NEVER EXPECTED TO MAKE, BUT SURELY ALWAYS WANTED TO MAKE!

The new Ocean Going Steeler 22m is built for careless ocean crossings.

Introducing : the new Steeler oceangoing Explorer Yacht

This new Explorer is a whole new story. It is a story about you.

The facts are simple. Of course you recognize the exceptional Steeler design. And you know a Steeler does not compromise on built quality and the best possible propulsion and electrical systems.

But the new Explorer is your story. If you need a crew of three for careless Ocean crossings, we incorporate three comfortable and separate crew cabins. On top of the owner’s cabin and three guest rooms of course. And if you need a lift from the lower deck to the fly for whatever need or wish.. you got it.

But if you dream of being the Captain yourself on a trip you might never have expected to make but surely always wanted to make … we will build you the new Explorer just like that. And maybe we can use the space of two crew cabins for a Sauna and a Jacuzzi?

What we would like to know is: how to build your Explorer ! Make us your partner of dreams. Your ideas for the best possible yachting experience. And consider it done by the custom people of Steeler Yachts.

The new Explorer… your story.
