Table of Contents

Building a boat with Legos is a fun and creative project that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. With the right instructions and designs, anyone can create their own Lego vessel. In this easy guide, we will explore various techniques and tips for building a boat using Legos.

Key Takeaways:

  • Building a boat with Legos is a fun and creative project for all ages.
  • Start by gathering the necessary materials, including a big box of Legos and a shallow dish for testing.
  • Design the boat by creating a flat surface and sides using Legos.
  • Ensure the boat is properly sealed to prevent water leakage.
  • Test the boat’s capabilities by adding pennies to see how much weight it can hold.

The Basics: Lego Boat Building Tips and Techniques

Building a Lego boat is an exciting and rewarding project that allows you to unleash your creativity while honing your building skills. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced Lego enthusiast, these tips and techniques will help you create a sturdy and functional Lego boat that can navigate the imaginary seas of your imagination.

Gather the Necessary Materials

Before you begin building your Lego boat, make sure you have all the essential materials on hand:

  • A big box of assorted Legos
  • A shallow dish or container
  • Pennies for testing

Designing the Boat

The first step in building a Lego boat is to design the structure. Start by creating a flat surface using Legos, which will serve as the base of your boat. Then, build the sides of the boat, ensuring that they are sturdy and well-connected to the base. You can experiment with different shapes and sizes to customize your boat according to your preferences.

Sealing the Boat

One crucial aspect of Lego boat building is ensuring that your boat is properly sealed to prevent water leakage. Take your time to inspect the joints and connections between the bricks, making sure there are no gaps or openings. This will help keep your boat afloat and prevent any water from seeping in.

Testing the Boat

Once you’ve completed building your Lego boat, it’s time for the ultimate test. Fill the shallow dish or container with water and gently place your boat in it. Now, add pennies to the boat one by one, observing how much weight it can hold before sinking. This will give you an idea of the boat’s buoyancy and stability.

Remember, Lego boat building is all about experimentation and learning. Don’t be afraid to modify your design, add reinforcements, or try different techniques to improve the performance of your boat. With practice, you’ll become a skilled Lego boat builder, ready to embark on countless imaginative adventures.

Testing and Challenges: Which Boat is the Best?

After building the Lego boats, it’s time to put them to the test and see how they perform. The main challenge is to determine which boat can hold the most pennies before sinking. This challenge not only tests the boat’s buoyancy but also its weight-bearing capacity and overall structural integrity.

But that’s not the only challenge you can explore. Get creative and try other exciting challenges to push the limits of your Lego boats. For example, you can see which boat floats the longest, measuring the duration it stays afloat before sinking. Or, you can race the boats down a makeshift river and determine which one flows the fastest.

You can also experiment with the boats’ cargo-holding capabilities. Find out which boat can hold the most Lego minifigures without capsizing. This challenge not only tests the boat’s balance but also its stability and capacity to withstand uneven weight distribution.

Building Hacks for Better Performance

“To enhance your boats’ performance, here are some Lego boat building hacks you can try: Use a denser brick arrangement in the lower section of the boat to lower its center of gravity and improve stability. Add small weights, like strategically placed pennies, to help the boat sit deeper in the water, increasing its buoyancy. Experiment with different shapes and designs to find the most aerodynamic configuration for faster flowing and improved performance.”

By exploring these challenges and employing building hacks, you can unlock the full potential of your Lego boats and discover which one truly stands out as the best.

Comparison of Lego Boat Performances

Boat Name Pennies Held Float Duration (seconds) Lego Minifigures Held
Boat A 15 45 5
Boat B 20 60 3
Boat C 12 30 7

The table above demonstrates a comparison of three Lego boats’ performances across various challenges. Boat B showcases the highest weight-bearing capacity by holding 20 pennies, while Boat C holds the most Lego minifigures with 7 figures. However, Boat A floats for the longest duration at 60 seconds, showing excellent buoyancy and stability.

Use this table as inspiration to analyze and improve your own Lego boat designs , learning from the strengths and weaknesses of each boat’s performance.

Are Legos a big hit in your home??? I know they are here. My son can never have enough. He loves building all the cool sets. However, Legos are not only super fun to build with, but there are so many ways to incorporate them in your homeschool (or a Family Night). One fun activity to try is the Lego Boat STEM Challenge.

Lego boats are sure to be a hit if:

  • Your kids love Legos.
  • STEM Challenges are a hit in your home.
  • Your family loves doing challenges together.

If your child knows how to build with Legos, they are good to go. They should be able to figure out this challenge.

So, let’s take a look at this challenge.

Lego Boat STEM

Lego Boats STEM Challenge

I have TWO challenges to try with Lego Boats. Both are great ways to have some educational fun.

*** Now to help you out, I have some worksheets to go along with this Lego Boat Challenge. You can get your FREE copies below.

how to build a lego sailboat

Lego Boat Challenge #1

STEM boat challenge for kids

In this challenge, kids will build a Lego boat that can float.

You will need:

  • Sink, tub, or container to float the boats in
  • Paper and pencil

Step 1- Build

Using Legos, build a boat you think will float.

Step 2 – Test

Fill a sink, tub, or container with water. Test your boat. Gently place your boat in the water and see what happens.

Step 3 – Analyze results.

  • Encourage kids to try a few designs to see what floats the best. Make sure they jot down what works and what doesn’t work, so they know how to adjust their designs.
  • Observe how others Lego boats do. By observing other boats, they might see some design ideas that will work better than others.

Step 4 – Test Again

Test out the new design. Place your new boat in the water and see how it does.

Step 5 – Discuss

Discuss how things went. Did the boats do better? Did things go as expected?

Topics for Discussion:

After kids have tested and retested their Lego boats, here are some things to ask them.

  • Did your boat float the first time?
  • If your boat worked the first time, why do you think it did?
  • What changes did you make to improve your boat?
  • What design seems to work well? Certain height? Width?

Write down the characteristics the kids thought worked well and see if the kids can find anything in common among the ships that floated well.

Here are some of the first designs of our boats.

Lego Boats STEM challenge, STEM for kids

Here is how well they floated.

Lego Boat Challenge

They capsized. So, we went back to the drawing board.

Our next attempts went better. Notice we took off our masts.

STEM Challenge, Lego STEM

Even though our second Lego boats floated, they had a slight lean to them. I observed that, over time, they started to slowly take on water. Not a huge deal until we took on our second challenge (but more on that in a minute).

We also experimented with having a mast of our ships. Our first attempts didn’t go well. Our boats toppled immediately. With some experimenting, though, we were able to get our boats to float with a mast on it.

Extensions to the Lego Boat STEM Challenge #1:

  • Timed Challenge – If you want to make things a little more challenging, give kids a time limit. Tell them they have X number of minutes to build their boats. It could be five minutes or ten. Pick a set time and start the timer.
  • Set dimensions – Another way to make things a little more interesting is to set certain dimensions. For instance, the Lego boats can only be X inches long or only X amount high. On the same note, you could say the boats MUST be at least X inches long.
  • The challenge can be to see whose boat floats the best on the first try . After that, they build a whole new boat.

Lego Boat Challenge #2

STEM activity for kids

For this challenge, kids must build a boat that can hold weight WITHOUT capsizing .

You can do this a couple of ways:

  • See which boat can hold the most weight.
  • See if you can build a boat to hold more weight than your previous boat.

Regardless of which one you choose, kids need a boat that can float and hold weighted items in it.

You will need :

  • Paper and pencil (or get Record Sheet)
  • Items to put in a boat: pennies, glass beads, etc.

Step 1- Pick Your Items

Choose the items you will add to the boat for weight. We used glass beads, but we also used pennies. Find something around your house that is small but has some weight to it.

Step 2- Test

Place the Lego boat in the water. Slowly add your items one at a time. Count how many items it holds before it sinks or tips over.

Step 3- Record

Record your results. You can write it on a sheet of paper or download the worksheets included with this challenge.

Step 4- Repeat

Repeat until everyone has tried out their boat, OR you make changes to your current boat and test the new design.

Step 5- Analyze

Analyze the results. What boats did well? Why do you think some boats held more than others? Discuss the challenge.

Here are some pictures from our challenge.

Lego boats for kids

At first, my boat held the most. It held 10 glass beads. My son’s boat held 8. However, my son realized he needed to place his beads in more carefully. When he did this, his boat held 12 beads. He ended up winning.

If you remember, I mentioned our boats had a slight lean to them. Well, this definitely played a part in our boats’ ability to hold weight. They started to tip quicker than if they weren’t already leaning slightly. It was something to keep in mind when trying it again.

stem activities

Lego Boat Wrap-Up

Lego boats are a fun activity that the kids (or the whole family) will enjoy. STEM challenges are always exciting, not to mention educational. Kids learn to experiment and try new designs. Great problem-solving skills, by the way.

We often incorporate STEM activities in our homeschool. You may like to try the Zip Line Challenge , STEM Tower Challenge , or Winter Snowman Bridge Challenge .

My most popular post is the Lego Balloon Cars . You’ll want to give it a try!

If you are interested in STEM kits, check out Pitsco Education . They have kits that can be delivered to your own home.

Can You Design the Best LEGO Boat | Simple STEM Project for Kids

Between Lego and STEM projects, I am not sure which would win out in our house? Why? Because my oldest is obsessed with Lego . Since he was a toddler, he has loved tinkering and building with Lego. It’s a language we can share to connect and grow together. Plus, Lego are just fun. While LEGO lends itself to STEM projects pretty easily, we always seem to find ourselves gravitating towards engineering projects involving LEGO, like this fun and simple LEGO STEM project for kids to design the best LEGO boat.

Lego Boats Science Experiment - How many pennies can your boat hold-

When I was in the classroom, I gravitated towards STEM projects before they were even a thing. I loved the projects because they encouraged even the quirkiest kids to step outside their box and problem solve. I loved seeing how kids that typically struggled in reading or other subjects suddenly have magical “wins” that made them smile from ear to ear.

One of our favorite STEM projects was making foil boats that had to hold pennies without sinking. So when my kids wanted to make boats with LEGO I was excited to try this classic project with them.

All this week, I am taking part in the annual Lego Week, that is hosted by my friend at Toddler Approved. It is super fun, because each year a bunch of us get together to share how we play, create and learn with Lego, giving you tons of ideas to try with your kids! It comes at the perfect time too, because I have some pretty big news I can’t wait to share with you!

How to Make LEGO Boats for your STEM Challenge

The best part about STEM challenges is that you get to test, problem solve and use trial and error. There are no set instructions to follow and creativity is challenged. To make a LEGO boat, you will need to create a flat surface and sides to your boat. How big, how wide or how deep of a boat you make is completely part of the fun.

While my middle son stuck with a traditional rectangle boat, my oldest got a little fancier with his in an attempt to make it more aerodynamic. The choice is yours.

How to build an airship in Lego Fortnite

How to Build an Airship in Lego Fortnite

Image of Cody Perez

Vehicles in Lego Fortnite are such an essential part of the experience since they allow you to traverse the landscape with ease. The Airship is perhaps the best vehicle in the entire game since it lets you fly around quite fast. If you want to know how to build your very own Airship in Lego Fortnite and find all of its materials, you’re in the right place.

How to build an airship in Lego Fortnite

How to Build an Airship

The Airship works pretty much the same as the other vehicles in this game. You first need to acquire the blueprint to make the Airship and then you can start building it anytime and anywhere. Well, that is assuming you have the materials and parts to make it in the first place. Acquiring the blueprint is random but it helps to gather all of the necessary materials beforehand.

Here are all of the materials you’re going to need for the lengthy six steps you’ll have to follow to build an Airship from scratch:

  • 42 Wooden Rods

How to Get All Materials for an Airship in Lego Fortnite

The main problem with building an Airship in Lego Fortnite is gathering all of the materials to make this valuable vehicle. Starting with the wood, this is by far the easiest part of the whole journey. Just mash away at a few trees and you’ll have 33 Wood in no time. Torches are easy as well, just requiring a Crafting Bench, some Wood, and Vines.

Granite is also quite easy to find, as you just need to destroy any rocks you come across. 73 is a lot, though, so be prepared for the grind for this one. Now, the biggest problem is going to be the Wooden Rods. You need to build a Lumber Mill for this and one Wood makes for one Wooden Rod. So, you’ll need an additional 42 Wood for this part. Once you have all of the materials, you are good to go to build an Airship.

Lego Fortnite is available right now for free for Android, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC .

To make a LEGO boat, you will need to create a flat surface and sides to your boat. How big, how wide or how deep of a boat you make is completely part of the fun.
