I'll be visiting Ireland this summer, and in addition to adding at least one new Peterson to my collection I'm curious if there's a famous or favourite local blend that I should look for in the shops. Ideally something not readily available in the U.S. I know there are a bajillion Peterson blends out there, but are they what the locals will typically buy and smoke as well? Thanks in advance.

sasquatch

There certainly are lots of classic Irish tobaccos, the Gallaher factory made Condor and many others, just as one example, but it closed last year, so I'm honestly not sure what you'll find when you get there. It's always astonishing to me how regional tobacco supply is - you find all kinds of strange things in Germany that you can't find in England, for example, and vice versa. So you'll just have to take your chances!

  • Feb 1, 2019

I agree about Germany, and they supply a good number of blends to both Austria and the Czech Republic it seems, too. I bought a tin of Vauen Bavarian Blend in Munich last summer that I'll probably get to soon, and the tin of Prague's Mixture that I bought at a local shop there was manufactured in Germany. I went to four tobacconists in Vienna and they all said the few pipe tobaccos they had were either major global brands or no-names from Germany that were pretty atrocious.

Classic Irish You say,? then perhaps,Yachtsman brand plug tobacco would do?

Interesting! I might buy a pouch over there to take home, but since I won't be bringing a knife with me to prepare a plug (I travel with carry-on luggage only), I'm probably after something in a different format. Or is plug tobacco the quintessential Irish pipe tobacco? I might just bring a pouch of something from home to enjoy over there if that's the case, but I'll be darned if I'm not going to break in my new Irish pipe in Ireland!

w2irt2@ That may be a good idea since I've been told that Yachtsman plug is solid as rock and very dense format.

saltedplug

Condor would have been in the top three Irish tobaccos until those brilliant corporate types moved its manufacture to Poland, trashing it in the process. Who do they think is going to buy their dogshit product?

trouttimes

Wow! I always thought the Irish only drink.

seldom

Perhaps Mick McQuaid? If you find yourself in Galway head to Powells Music Shop. They have a nice selection of pipes (both musical and the kind for smoking) as well as pipe tobacco.

Hoping to spend a night in Galway. We'll be spending at least 3 days in Counties Clare and Kerry, and being a huge fan of the Jack Taylor movies, if I can finagle the schedule to allow a night there I'll heat to Powells for sure.

mso489

PC sells a pouch blend called Erin Go Braugh with Irish whiskey, if that's an Irish blend ... I'm not sure. However, alas, somewhere in the last decade the Irish forbade smoking in their omnipresent pubs, so you'll drink your Guiness without your pipe. One cultural point, a good dram of Guiness properly drawn has to let the foam develop, so it takes a few minutes to bring the glass, so be patient, and the barman or woman will know you are saavy and not an annoying tourist.

Might Stick Around

Peterson's Irish Flake???

Oh, I know the proper way to draw a Guinness, and will be doing it myself at St. James's Gate. It's a two-step process at minimum, and three if done correctly. I heard about the smoking ban in pubs, and honestly I'm good with it. I'll be spending a fair amount of time outdoors, and if the weather cooperates for a few minutes after supper a pipe is a fine way to get in the mood for music in the pub later on. I know there are plenty of Peterson "Irish" branded tobaccos, but what I'm after here is a decent representative local or regional smoke. Something a resident would buy from the local shop and fill his (or her) pipe with at home. All the better if it isn't readily available here in the U.S. I guess what I'm looking for is the pipe tobacco equivalent of drinking a well-loved locally brewed beer vs a major global brand. Consider in the Czech Republic drinking Staropromen rather than Pilsner Urquell, for example. Or over here, Brooklyn Lager instead of Bud Light or similar horsep#$$.

My wife was a food writer on Manhattan and Long Island, and I think she knew the guy who started Brooklyn Lager, if that's the brewery that opened beneath the big Silvercup sign. I think he borrowed relatively small amounts from a bunch of friends, or sold them shares, and he and they did very well indeed.

If you're going to be in Dublin, make it a point to visit James Fox Cigar & Whiskey Store on Grafton Street. They usually have a good selection of tobaccos common to Ireland. The only other pipe tobacco I regularly came across the last time we were there was Condor but the quality apparently has gone downhill substantially since production was moved to Poland

So I've heard. And yes, I will go to Condor as well as Peterson's shop. That's Day-one's agenda, in fact, since I will need to buy a throwaway lighter for both my pipe and cigars. I've heard very good things about James Fox. I'll be bringing my cigars with me, but I always like to buy one or two whenever I'm away, regardless.

Sounds like a nice trip. As I suggested above, Mick McQuaid might fit what you are looking for. It comes as a plug or ready rubbed or square cut. Here is a tobaccoreviews.com link: Mick McQuaid Plug Reviews . I don't believe it is readily available stateside.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see if that one's available. I'm basically at the point that I have more tins of tobacco than I will ever finish, so now it's just a question of getting something as a souvenir from my travels, and having a bowl here and there in the year following my voyage, to bring back memories.

Once you get away from Dublin and into Ireland proper you'll quickly discover some great pubs, many of which have decent smoking areas outside. Some heated and many partially enclosed to beat the wind and rain. Great place for pint and pipe while talking with the locals, away from the noisy craic inside. One place in Dingle has a great outdoor barbecue and talking cooking, pipe and pint in hand, is a great afternoon. Ask anywhere there, should you get to Dingle, they'll point you in the right direction. Great trad also. Add Roundstone, Co. Galway, to your itinerary if you can. A grand little hotel, Roundstone House, a couple of good pubs and two of the finest beaches, in my opinion, on the island. Dine on what my wife claimed was the finest Shephard's Pie in the world at the hotel. Why a "throw away" lighter? If you're going into the Peterson store grab a couple of their lighters if the exchange rate is right. I usually bring back a couple for gifts.

pappymac

About 6 or 7 years ago, I had a good supply of James J. Fox pipe tobaccos - Dorisco, Provost, Bankers, Campanile and The Squire. Dorisco Mixture and Provost Mixtures were my favorite. About the time I had finished all of the tins I had, they seemed to be out of stock so I just haven't ordered any since then. I'll have to revisit them.

yachtsman plug tobacco

I think you have it figured out already seeing the pocket knife in the photo. If you are smoking indoors I slice the plug very thin for a nice easy draw and burn. If I'm smoking outdoors I chunk the plug a bit coarse because the breezes and outside movement keeps the tobacco burning a bit hotter and faster. The moisture content of the plug is another variable. I prefer my tobacco on the real dry side to eliminate a wet smoke, just have to sip the tobacco more gently to avoid any tongue bite. Great looking plug by the way. Murray's is great tobacco. Enjoy.

Thanks Doc - I knew it needed cut, and like everything there is a wealth of (sometimes contradictory) information on the web. I wanted advice from somebody that knew what worked for them. I've gone for the thin slices - I went for 3 in a Pete 03. I think 2 or 2 1/2 next time. Very nice smoke - I think I'm really sold on this! Thanks again Doc for the advice.....worth waiting for! Much appreciated Jers

Jers, I second Yaks' recommendation. I use a whirly grinder, such as is used for coffee/spices. I do this regularly on firm Brit plugs such as Revor, since they don't respond well for me any other way. It shreds them pretty good for packing, but I also don't pulverise them. Just a couple quick pulses to render them into smallish bits is all that is required. And then I let them dry a bit as well and pack somewhat loosely. Works for me. HTH. Cheers, RR

...a fairly mild plug as Warrior is the strongest plug from Murrays. ...The blender may work, I prefer to slice plugs a medium thickness and then fold, tear, and stuff it into the bowl...I've prepared plugs this way for 40 + years and never had an issues with lighting or smoking...

  • Aug 14, 2012

Yep Peter - the slice, fold twice, loosen and stuff method seems to work very well - especially now I'm using less slices and leaving a good air pocket at the bottom of the bowl. I find the flavour of the Yachtsman lovely and mellow but when smoking it yesterday I noted again it's strength in nicotine in comparison to the aromatics I normally smoke. Murray's Yachtsman Plug really is lovely stuff - its replacing Peterson Connoisseur's Choice as my morning smoke today. I've ordered a few more 50g packs of Yachtsman yesterday - so I can keep a stock handy. I've also got a tin of Peterson 3P's coming - I'll be interested to see how that compares. Fraternally Jers

I’m interested in @JimInks take in this. Jim, any experience and or insight?

Take 'er easy there, Pilgrim.

I smoked Yachtsman last night and tonight I’ve got 3P going. Same pipe, my Alden bamboo billiard. I’ve only had the 3P going for 15 minutes or so but I’ve got some preliminary thoughts. These don’t seem to me like the same blend. First cousins sure, but I get some differences: - Color is different, both are mainly dark but the 3P is darker. If anything the Yachtsman I have is the earlier vintage of the two so that doesn’t explain it. - Tin note is different. 3P is sharper and fruitier, Yachtsman is nuttier and deeper. Not dramatically different though. - Smoking the 3P now it seems like it has a more fruit driven topping, juicier in every way. If anything I’m getting more sauce from this one vs Yachtsman and if you had asked me 2 days ago I would have sworn it’s the reverse. I’m getting more strength from 3P tonight vs Yachtsman last night. Again, ask me 2 days ago and I’d have said it’s the reverse. I‘m getting a lightly astringent quality from 3P that I didn’t get from Yachtsman. All just preliminary thoughts though, not helped by the nagging suspicion that I should have dried my Yachtsman a little more last night. Of course more study is required, not least because they are both delicious. Thanks again to @Chicken Man for starting this fantastic thread!

That was a really great read. Maybe I should look into the 3P. I'm always interested to try something that may be the same as a classic blend, in the interest of experiencing the pipe as people did before my time. I'm sorry to hear your selection in Ireland is limited as well. If it were possible for any of us to ship you a little of something I'm sure many would oblige.

MLC said: @tfdickson - reading your notes made me question my memory and made me want to revisit Yachtsman and make comparison again. I dug around in the dungeon trying to find a plug of it but couldn't find one hiding anywhere so I must've smoked it all! I never bought it in large quantity like I did with Velvan... ...but did find myself getting a good bit of it after Velvan was discontinued and Yachtsman was the last man standing. My most recent batch though was late 2018 or early 2019 thereabouts if I'm recollecting accurately, it was after Pantone 448C had been implemented. The last several latest reviews on TR makes it seem that perhaps they've altered the recipe or something, this review states directly that it is different: Earlier had forgotten to quote the old A.I.T.S. too where blend descrip was lifted straight from Murray adcopy and it seems pretty forthright in suggesting the same blend/different flavor thing: Another interesting aspect that @Chicken Man took note of is the different cut of square (plug) and oblong (bar) as I remember instances in the past when like say Warrior for example would come cut either way and I've always wondered why they alternated at times? Oddly enough for whatever reason, I prefer the bar cut because it just seems handier to me! I wish that I could visit Miss Moran. Click to expand...

Boys let’s not forgot the plug basics. I can slice you two bowl fulls and a blind test would leave you scratching your head. Shaved fine, chunked, hunked, whatever, they all give different exposures and characteristics of the same tobacco. Not to mention what a couple years does to a plug. I always applaud and appreciate these plug threads, but let’s remember that we’re dealing with the most chameleon of tobacco cuts.

  • May 24, 2023
Chicken Man said: That's a superb collection of tobacco you have there. I only got into pipe smoking around 2021 so I cannot comment about what Yachtsman used to be like. Those descriptions of the variously plugs gave me a good chuckle. I had agreed with what others had said about the Murray's plugs probably being similar, never would I have guessed that damn near all of them were related to Yachtsman in some way. I also agree that the bar form of plugs are more handy than the squares. They are especially handy if you're standing and have nothing to rest your plug/knife on. Also Ms. Moran's doesn't appear to have changed all that much since those photos were taken. That glass case is still on the counter, and there is still a wall of tobacco in the same spot. If you stand where that photo inside the shop was taken and turn to your left there's a huge collection of pipes adorning the wall, mostly Petersons from what I saw. I'll be honest I was in a bit of shock at all the lovely pipes and tobacco all around me so I didn't look to closely at the place. Highly recommended if you're ever in Belfast. Click to expand...

MLC said: I was lucky to build a modest stockpile but couldn't go bigtime superdeep due to expense involved, so my small supply will eventually expire, but it's nice to have one of the oldies every now and then which I do sparingly these days and always get bowled over by the big flavor since I'm so used to how subtle 3P's is because it's my main daily smoke. You ever browse the antique or charity shops? Might get lucky and find some truly glorious artifacts over there! Just never know what may be hiding on a dusty shelf in a nondescript box... ...I came to love everything associated with UK tobacco and developed a sort of obsessive mania about it all, and the Irish stuff holds an extraspecial spot in my heart because for me they created the ultimate expressions of pipe tobacco. This thread is extremely interesting & quite nostalgic. I love it. I'm smoking a bowl of 3P's from 2010 right now & it has no discernable topping left. Still delightful. I'm glad to know it's a decent replacement for some older plugs that I'll likely never smoke.

The tanks are clean inside, no debris and there is a water/debris filter/separator mounted on the inside of the aft hull and it is replaced every 6 months. I have plenty of spares. She came with an aftermarket in-mast furling system that just did not work and was very difficult to furl and un-furl so I had it removed and replaced with the original furling system. The Motor is a 2000 Evinrude FICHT 115HP with 460 hours on her. Two years ago, I had her tuned up by a Certified Evinrude mechanic and he replaced the impeller and the prop with a used one. I have done all the maintenance since then (DeCarbon, spark plug gapping and replacement, etc.) and I have the diagnostic software on a laptop (included with the boat) and maintenance manual. At the time, this was a very advanced engine because Evinrude contracted with German Company FICHT to design a low-pressure fuel injection system. They came up with an Engine Management Module (computer) and on-cylinder fuel pressurizers/injectors that are mapped to the computer. They can be very finicky engines but this one has been well cared for and she always starts up and runs very smooth up to about 4,200 RPMs. I just replaced the hydraulic tilt/trim unit with a new old-stock re-built unit. The hull is bulletproof and in very good condition. The port side has gelcoat scars from my slip’s metal cleat that gave way during the hurricane last year in Tampa, but I have lightly sanded them away. Bottom paint has just been professionally applied. Lancer built an excellent boat and the Powersailer can support up to a 200HP motor. Because of that, the hull is a compromise in both the sailing and motoring department. She is not a speed demon either under sail or motoring, but she is fun whether you are cruising the ICW or out sailing along the coast and she is stable in rough seas. For a 28-year-old boat, she is in very good shape! She comes with all required Coast Guard safety equipment, small window air conditioner, various tools, drill, microfiber towels, rechargeable handheld vacuum cleaner, VHF radio and a healthy parts supply for any repairs. This is a great first-time sailboat or a good boat to teach your son or daughter how to sail. Clean Florida Title and current registration. 1. Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) Yachtsman Plug

Pleasant to Tolerable. In terms of the tobacco, a moderate, darkish flavor, rather more burley-like than VA. The casing defeated me for a while, as this seems to pick up ghosts more easily than most, so I finally tried a new clay and got a very light berry flavor. The plug is fairly easy to carve up and cut down.

I smoked the Yachtsman in the morning, made a good mental note of how it tasted, the mechanics of the tobacco and the consistency and colour of the ash. Then after that I enjoyed a rum and tonic since today it is a blistering 18 degrees Celsius (64 Fahrenheit).

  4. The plug thread V 2.0

This plug fairly screams 'Scandinavian Tobacco Group!' in cut, colour, and press - it is firm, mottled brown and black, and evinces a mildly fruity nose, recalling other recently STG-produced plugs such as Velvan, Warrior, and Yachtsman.

Well once I tried 3Ps, I was quite surprised to find out that it tasted a lot like Yachtsman Navy Plug, which is a classic Irish OTC blend which I had smoked quite a bit of.
