The Vagabond 47 Sailboat Specs & Key Performance Indicators

The Vagabond 47 is a ultra-heavy  staysail ketch known for its robust build and bluewater capabilities. Designed by American naval architect William Garden, the boat combines substantial seafaring attributes with comfort and aesthetic appeal.

These sailboats were primarily built by Blue Water Yacht Builders in Taipei, Taiwan, during the late 1970s and 1980s, and was aimed at cruisers seeking a dependable and spacious vessel for long voyages.

Published Specifications for the Vagabond 47

Underwater Configuration: Full keel with rudder on keel Hull Material: Fiberglass Length Overall: 46.58 feet / 14.2 meters * Waterline Length: 40.50 feet / 12.34 meters Beam: 13.50 feet / 4.11 meters Draft: 5.50 feet / 1.68 meters Rig Type: Ketch Displacement: 40,000 lbs / 18,144 kg Designer: William Garden ** Builder: Blue Water Yacht Builders, Taiwan Year First Built: 1971 Year Last Built: 1988 Number Built: Approximately 200 units

* 55.00 feet to include bowsprit.

**  William Garden, the designer of the Vagabond 47, also designed other models including the Vagabond 42, the Vagabond 52 and the Heritage West Indies 36.

The Vagabond 47 sailboat was also known as the Vagabond Voyager 47 and the Heritage Vagabond 47.

Published Design Ratios for the Vagabond 47

  • Sail Area/Displacement Ratio (14.5): This ratio is below 16, suggesting the Vagabond 47 is somewhat underpowered. This indicates the boat may not have as much sail power as other boats with higher ratios, potentially offering slower acceleration and reduced performance in lighter winds.
  • Ballast/Displacement Ratio (27.5): With a ratio significantly below 40, the Vagabond 47 might not be as stiff or powerful compared to boats with higher ratios. While it should still have sufficient stability, it may heel more under wind pressure compared to boats with higher ballast ratios, especially those with most of the ballast concentrated in a deep keel bulb.
  • Displacement/Length Ratio (390.8): This value places the vessel in the 'Ultraheavy Displacement' category. This indicates a boat that is generally sturdy, heavily built, and capable of carrying a substantial amount of stores and equipment. Such a design typically excels in heavy weather due to better motion comfort but may be slower in light wind conditions.
  • Comfort Ratio (49.9): Falling just under the threshold for 'ocean going yacht', this suggests the Vagabond 47 offers significant motion comfort, suitable for serious offshore work where vessel motion can impact crew endurance and safety. It indicates a design optimized for comfort in rough seas rather than speed, aligning with its heavy displacement nature.
  • Capsize Screening Formula (1.57): A value well below 2.0 suggests that the Vagabond 47 has strong blue water capabilities, being less likely to capsize in adverse conditions due to an appropriate beam-to-displacement balance. This contributes significantly to its suitability for ocean passages.

While these ratios provide useful insights, they have limitations. Notably, the Ballast/Displacement Ratio does not account for the distribution of the ballast along the boat's keel. A deep, well-designed keel might provide better righting moment and stiffness than a similarly ballasted boat with a shallower keel, affecting performance and safety.

The Comfort Ratio too has its constraints. Designed by Ted Brewer, it naturally favours traditional heavy displacement designs with narrow beams and long overhangs typical of earlier yacht designs. Modern beamy, light-displacement vessels with plumb bows might not score as favourably on this scale, despite possibly having good bluewater capabilities and comfortable motion at sea due to different hull designs and modern technology.

Read more about Design Ratios...

Overall, the Vagabond 47 appears to be designed for safe, comfortable long-distance cruising rather than speed, making it ideal for cruisers who prioritize safety and comfort over performance.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

LOA incl. bowsprit: 55’ Also known as VAGABOND VOYAGER 47, HERITAGE VAGABOND 47. A number of interior layouts were available.
