Princess Sofia Regatta: 470 crew ready to take on world's best

h

Not much has been conventional about Sam Street’s sailing career. A Waszp world champion before he had even won a national title, Street has also been juggling the one-person one-design foiler with the double-handed 470 for more than a year – all while being over 1200km away from his teammate. It’s no surprise then, that the 22-year-old is not put off by the challenge of lining up alongside 71 other crews – including most of the world’s best – at the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma tonight. Street and Brittany Wornall is New Zealand’s sole 470 entry at the biggest international event of the year so far. The class, traditionally sailed in separate men’s and women’s fleets at the Olympics, will be contested by mixed crews in the French capital. For the duo, the Princess Sofia is also a rare opportunity to spend considerable time together in the same city as they have had to overcome a long-distance sailing partnership for more than a year. “I’ve known Britt since my days in the youth classes, and while I had always wanted to sail with her, circumstances prevented it for a long time,” Street said. “At the end of 2021, I took a chance and called Britt and thankfully she said she was keen to give it a crack. We both identified the opportunity there could be for New Zealand and with the wealth of knowledge we have in the class it was a bit of a no-brainer.” Having agreed to team up, the pair next had to overcome a logistical challenge through careful planning and countless flights between Auckland, where Street lives, and Wornall’s Christchurch base. “It’s difficult being in different islands but it makes the training sessions that we do have so much more valuable, as we’re more switched on,” Street said. “The biggest one for us is definitely being overseas – being with other boats at the top of the class.” Training in the Spanish resort city - ahead of the first of 11 races, starting at 10pm tonight (NZ time) - has already led to improvements. “We’ve had some long sessions on the water and quite a bit of practice racing with close to 40 boats on the start line at times – and that’s only just over half of the fleet!” It's a significant change from the small number of mixed 470 entries at most domestic regattas. “One of the challenges for many countries has been getting used to mixed sailing. It’s a different dynamic… you could be two great sailors, but if you don’t gel, it just won’t work,” Street said.

The support of veteran 470 sailors Paul Snow-Hansen and Dan Wilcox, who narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games, and former world champion Simon Cooke has been a boon – as has been working closely with the Australian squad in Palma. “The Aussies are on the same page as us – we all just want to get better and try to close the gap on some of the more established international crews.” There is plenty of catching up to do, Street acknowledges – after he and Wornall finished in the bottom half of the fleet at the 2022 Open European championships and the world championships in September. “Countries like Spain and France have been in the class for 25 years and they have so many great sailors and teams that they are some way ahead of us," he said. “We know we have the speed and for us, it’s just about consistency and time in the boat. We want to qualify for [the 2024 Olympic Games in] Paris. It’s a tough goal but we think it’s achievable.” Street is no stranger to success on the global stage – he won last year’s Waszp world championships in Lake Garda, Italy – a result that saw him shortlisted for the male sailor of the year at the international Foiling Awards. He followed it up with victory at the Waszp national championships in Christchurch earlier this month – his first national title at the fifth attempt – and one of the last things “to tick off” before stepping away from the class. “I want to do the world champs at the end of this year and then get into the Moth class,” Street explained. “The Waszp is an awesome class – it’s a one-design, so it is simplified and has a steep learning curve but it’s also limited in a sense and plateaus quickly.” Competing in vastly different classes has its advantages, he believes. “It’s been cool developing the different skills - surfing the waves and being a lot more dynamic with your body in the 470 while just being locked into pretty much a sailing path in the foiling stuff. “Having that knowledge and developing the ability to switch your mindset between the two has definitely made me a more rounded sailor.”   Schedule for day 1 at the 2023 Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma de Mallorca, Spain (NZ time): 9pm: IQFOIL men (4 races):  Josh Armit, Thomas Crook, Antonio Cozzolino, Patrick Haybittle, Eli Liefting.   10pm: 470 mixed (2 races):  Brittany Wornall/Sam Street;  ILCA 7 (2 races):  Tom Saunders, George Gautrey, Caleb Armit, Luke Cashmore, Luke Deegan;  ILCA 6 (2 races):  Olivia Christie.   10.30pm: IQFOIL women (4 races):  Veerle ten Have.

Moonen's submarine-carrying 42m flagship Sofia

Sofia _is a crossover between a go-anywhere expedition vessel and one of the traditionally styled motor yachts that have made Moonen Shipyards’ reputation. A custom project for a repeat Moonen client (who is now a majority shareholder in the yard), 42 metre _Sofia pushes the boundaries of innovation for a yacht of her length. Her visible highlights are obvious, including, but not limited to, the yellow submarine on her transom, but it’s really the statistics that speak to her technical achievement.

After extensive sea trials, _Sofia _notched up notable noise and vibration results. Whisper-quiet figures as low as 40 decibels were recorded in the cabins, and by the engine room the sound stayed under 46 decibels even at 11 knots. Vibration tests were equally remarkable: 0.3 in the cabins (compared to an acceptable Lloyd’s Class 1 level of 1.8) and 0.4 in public spaces (Class 1 level is 2.5). Moonen is known for its noise and vibration attenuation through propeller clearance, insulation, flexibly mounted interiors and air-supported generator cushions. But until this point, it has built only smaller yachts; to have repeated the feat on a much larger scale is impressive.

The essence of customisation is that things can change – and they certainly did on this yacht as the owner extended her by over a metre several months after building started.

‘Having already created two yachts together – a Moonen 84 and a 97 – we knew the owner’s preferences and expectations,’ says Emile Bilterijst, Moonen’s managing director. ‘ Sofia’s initial design evolved organically out of ongoing discussions, starting at 110 feet (33.5 metres) then moving up to 125 feet (38 metres). (The exterior designer) René van der Velden was briefed to synthesise rugged adventurous looks with superyacht style elements, and his initial designs had a slight explorer feel combined with raked aft decks. They immediately hit the spot, and the owner was also pleased with the tender placement, considering it a waste of real estate to keep his seven metre Novurania in a garage.’

A letter of intent was signed in early 2009, around the time that personal submarines started appearing on the superyacht market. They struck a chord with Sofia’s owner, a keen diver. He loved the idea of sharing the pleasures of the deep with guests less willing than he to don a wetsuit. One of the final changes to the general arrangement before the build got under way was the addition of a two-person sub. This was in early 2010, when the contract was signed.

Eight months later at the Monaco Yacht Show, Bilterijst trialled a submersible craft, taking a plunge below the waves on the owner’s behalf. ‘Stepping aboard, I realised that to take a guest with him and be able to enjoy the view himself, the owner would need a pilot,’ he says. ‘But no other motor yacht close to Sofia’s size carries a three-man submersible.

The new submarine – a C-Quester 3 from the Dutch firm U-Boat Worx – dramatically shifted _Sofia’s _weight distribution. At four-and-a-half tonnes, the submarine was 50 per cent heavier than the specified craft and required a much heftier crane to launch and deploy. This in turn entailed fitting an extra tank in the yacht’s forward section to counter the weight, while the stern platform had to be stretched, bringing her to her final length overall of 42 metres.

The sub can take three people to a depth of 100 metres, and Sofia is the first superyacht under 50 metres to carry such a craft. It requires a unique launching system that fully meets Lloyd’s and MCA compliance. The sub is set into the platform and when launched it leaves space for a huge beach club – or a great area for diving and watersports – with the crane serving as a mooring pontoon for the tenders.

‘Using a submarine of this sophistication entails other challenges,’ says Sofia’s captain, Ian Westman. ‘We’ve trained two crewmembers as pilots and the rest as surface officers in order to ensure smooth topside ops. You cannot simply splash a four-and-a-half-tonne craft into the water and go for a spin beneath the waves. From pre-dive preparations to the moment when the sub is back on board Sofia takes around six hours. Precautions include 24-hour global assistance for hyperbaric chambers, three backups to the primary system and 96 hours of emergency operation. This craft is like an aeroplane in its complexity, and feels like one when you’re sitting in her.’

Three years after the decision to install a bigger submarine, the owner is justifiably proud of the outcome. ‘I knew these were major revisions but René van der Velden and the naval architects at Stolk Marimecs were up to the task,’ he says. ‘Crucially, Moonen proved its flexibility and uncompromising commitment to fulfill client wishes. The yard handled my complex modifications with minimal delay, while still creating a yacht with maximum safety, functionality and redundancy. What’s more, Moonen successfully implemented new building techniques, new materials and top-of-the-line equipment and systems. There is much more to Sofia than her submarine alone.’

Her systems are state-of-the-art, from the integrated bridge to the Kaleidescape entertainment system with multi-room control via iPad (including lighting, blinds and climate), and from the thermal camera on the top mast and military-grade satcom to the man-overboard system with personal tracking.

Inside, giant windows bathe the living spaces with light, accentuating the three-story, skylight-topped atrium clad in stainless steel and backlit marble. Art-Line Interior Design created an overall style featuring oak veneers, zebrano wood, a composite stone called Concetto and off-white and camel-coloured materials. Horizontal detailing abounds with lots of complex wooden ribs. And this was clearly a massive project for the stainless-steel experts from Moonen’s sister company Inoferro.

The pièce de résistance is the roomy main saloon. Here, Concetto stone with translucent backlighting, as well as sculptural foam elements, encased in backlit coconut paper, conceal air outlets and engine room ventilation shafts without hindering airflow from hidden air-conditioning units. The layout of the atrium further enhances the sense of spaciousness. With the bridge deck lobby on the port side, entering the main deck on the starboard side provides an unusual aspect compared to more traditional layouts.

‘One of the things that made this main deck arrangement possible was our research into fire partitions, which have been made virtually invisible on the main deck,’ says Art-Line’s Frank Pieterse. ‘ Sofia _is the first boat on which we have managed to integrate the fire screen into the ceiling, which is why the staircase area and lounge are so open. This is an essential technical issue when a client desires open spaces. The yard had to convince the class societies that this solution would work, and the owner was very supportive. All too often, owners buying a larger boat go for more of the same on a larger scale, but this was certainly not the case on _Sofia .’

On the lower deck there is no corridor – the bottom of the staircase is immediately accessible to four cabins. ‘It looks simple and symmetrical but it’s actually quite a feat to achieve the right space division,’ says Pieterse, who, along with colleague Marilyn de Vaal, also creates interiors for luxury houses. ‘A boat should reflect the lifestyle of her owners to the same extent as their onshore accommodation,’ says Pieterse. The full-beam master and four guest suites are comfortable and cosy with the same colour scheme and use of zebrano and oak.

The working areas aboard benefited from collaboration between the designers and the crew. The galley was developed in consultation with food service equipment specialist Beuk Horeca International and Sofia’s chef. It includes features such as drainage gutters, astutely placed vents, soft-closing cupboards and an efficiently designed food service line.

The megayacht has the Mediterranean, the US East Coast and The Bahamas on her cruising schedule, and Alaska may also be on the horizon – including some glacial water diving. Meanwhile, the owner is already considering an even larger project. With plans afoot to increase the building capacity at Moonen, Sofia may not hold the yard’s size record for long.

The Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta reaffirmed the status of the Bay of Palma as one of the world’s benchmarks for Olympic class sailing competition.

Nearly 280 sailors made the best of three intense days racing at this traditional training regatta to familiarise themselves with the scenario in which they will compete in the 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca.

Greece’s Vasileia Karachaliou (ILCA 6), Britain’s Matt Beckett (ILCA 7), Spain’s Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman (470 Mixed), Poland’s Domonik Buksak and Szymon Wierzbicki (49er), Brazil’s Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (FX), and Denmark’s Natacha Saouma-Pedersen and Mathias Bruun (Nacra) sailed into the top spots in their respective classes at the Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta. The huge training regatta which is the warm up to Princesa Sofía Mallorca mustered 280 crews to race on the bay of Palma last weekend for three days of fine-tuning in full competition mode.

“It was an excellent exercise,” explains Ferrán Muniesa, from the Club Nàutic S’Arenal. “We were able to hold many races and the bay offered us two days of typical southerly wind conditions and one, on Saturday, a rougher day, with westerlies and showers. It’s true that it was a training regatta but there was a real competitive edge in each division, nobody likes to lose, especially the champions. It was especially interesting to see that several boats were using the new Olympic equipment for the first time, how the teams took advantage of this training session to measure speeds, and the presence of coaches on the course to record and take note of everything”.

The ILCA 6s were able to complete six races, the Nacra 17s seven, the ILCA 7s, 49er and FX eight, and the 470 Mixed nine legs. They all competed on three race course areas between Can Pastilla and El Arenal, confirming the success of a formula that allows the teams to train against their rivals but without the real pressure of there being titles at stake and points towards the Hempel World Cup Series, such as the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca.

Not only training

Even as a training regatta, the Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta served for the Spanish Cup in the 470 Mixed class, with victory for the Xammar-Brugman duo, followed by María Bover/Pablo García and Neus Ballester/Nacho Dávila. The race was also the premiere for the RFEV Iberdrola Women’s Sailing Cup, which crowned Dani Cardona in ILCA 6, Patricia Suárez/María Cantero in FX, Jordi Xammar/Nora Brugman in 470 Mixed and Iset Segura/Marcos Fernández in Nacra 17.

Three weeks for the Sofia

With the Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta completed, the crews have three weeks until the start of the Olympic class competition programme in the 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca. “One of the things the sailors appreciate the most is that between the two events they have time to go out on their bikes and enjoy the island,” explains Javier Zaynoun, from the Club Náutico San Antonio de la Playa. The list of registered entries already exceeds 800 crews in the ten participating classes.

The 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca is jointly organised by the Club Nàutic S’Arenal, the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, the Real Club Náutico de Palma, the Real Federación Española de Vela and the Federación Balear de Vela, with the backing of the main Balearic public institutions.

Sophia Loren Suite Sitting Room

The Sophia Loren Suite on the MSC Divina is one of two Royal Suites on the large ship . The suite was designed by Sophia Loren and has a separate sleeping area. The decor is mostly red, and the walls are covered with photos from her movie career. The suite has a separate bedroom and measures 390 square feet with a 172 square foot balcony.

Photos of Ms. Loren in some of her famous movie roles adorn the walls of the suite, and occupants can sit at a replica of her dressing table to apply makeup and style their hair. However, sitting at this dressing table probably won't make you look like Sophia Loren, but might give you an extra boost of confidence.

Sophia Loren Suite Bedroom

Doesn't this bed look like it was designed for a famous movie star like Sophia Loren? The red certainly looks like it is fit for a diva.
