Industry Spotlight on Boating in Florida

Yacht Keeper: Bob Roscioli, owner, Roscioli Yachting Center

Bob Roscioli has become a legendary figure in the megabucks world of big yachts.

Bob Roscioli came to south Florida from Philadelphia in 1956. He landed a job loading trucks at Port Everglades until he got a call from a boat captain about a job sanding boats at a yard on the New River.

He took it and later learned to paint vessels as well. But when he asked for a nickel raise to his $1.10 an hour pay, he got fired. "That was the turning point in my life," he says.

Roscioli says he began going house to house on Fort Lauderdale's canals drumming up varnishing and cleaning jobs. Eventually, "I became one of the best brush painters in the world," he says, and later, "I could spray better than anyone in the world."

Fifty years later, Roscioli, 71, is still on the New River, but the former door-todoor boat varnisher is now the owner of Roscioli Yachting Center, a 14.5-acre repair and refit yard that caters to some of the biggest yachts — and wealthiest boat owners — in the world. Roscioli has become "a legend in our industry," says Jim Moores, founder of Moores Marine in Palm Beach County, which specializes in wooden boat repair and restoration. "They've changed the game in how yachts and the people who run them are catered to."

Roscioli's yard handles boats up to 155 feet, which can easily cost $10 million or more and are typically staffed by a captain and crew of eight. Big jobs — redoing the exterior or interior, for example — can cost $500,000 to $2.5 million. But his bread and butter, he says, "is the guy that comes in and spends $40,000 to $80,000" for a job that requires sand blasting the bottom and work on the shafts and propellers. "That's what we concentrate on."

Roscioli's clients have included heavy hitters such as the late Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's, and disgraced investor Bernie Madoff. For several months every winter over about 14 years, Madoff's captain brought Madoff's 55- foot, 1969 Rybovich Sportfish Bull to the yard. The last thing he had done was a complete paint job, which cost more than $100,000. "I got paid," Roscioli says.

Then in April 2009, shortly after the yard finished the work, the U.S. Marshals Service seized the boat to raise money for Madoff's victims. That November, National Liquidators in Fort Lauderdale auctioned it for $700,000.

Roscioli likes to meet the owners "to find out who we're doing business with.

That's how I built my career," he says. But his staff deals mainly with the boat captains.

In the '60s, '70s and '80s, he says, the owners were more involved. Today, captains are more like boat managers. In the small world of yacht servicing, Roscioli has built his reputation with scrupulous attention to detail and fair dealing. "The best way to have a good experience in a boatyard," he says, "is to communicate well with the people."

More than 30 years ago, maritime lawyer Michael Moore of Moore & Co. In Coral Gables met Roscioli after wind blew paint from Roscioli's yard onto his client's yacht at an adjacent yard. "My client was livid," Moore says, but Roscioli "just took care of it." The yacht owner became a Roscioli client.

"His place is always spotless. The guy runs a very, very good operation," says Moore, who has been to a number of yards on his clients' behalf.

Meanwhile, Roscioli has branched out into boat building, operating Donzi by Roscioli International, a line of sport fishing yachts manufactured in Bradenton and finished off in Fort Lauderdale. The sleek Donzis range from 58 feet to 92 feet and from $2.5 million to $8.5 million. Roscioli became a dealer in 1986 and bought the line in 1987.

Today, Roscioli operates from the headquarters in Fort Lauderdale that he opened in 2008. The facility includes a lounge and fitness room for captains and crew, sauna, laundry, galley and concierge service. His son Rob, daughter Heather, and wife, Sharon, work with him.

Roscioli employs about 70 at his boatyard, down from a prerecession force of about 120, and 20 to 25 at Donzi. Finding workers is "a big problem," he says. The company works with local schools on training programs — sending people to upgrade their skills. "It's to our benefit to train a guy because we sell labor," he says.

Roscioli says he gets "an awful lot of inquiries about selling." But, he insists, "I love what I'm doing."

Georgia-based OneWater Marine (NASDAQ:ONEW) announced this morning that it has completed the acquisition of Roscioli Yachting Center, a full-service shipyard on the New River in Fort Lauderdale.

The Roscioli team includes over 100 skilled employees that provide services ranging from custom carpentry and fabrication to painting and refinishing. The yard generated revenues in excess of $15 million over the past 12 months, according to a statement from OneWater.

OneWater is a recreational boat retailer with 69 stores in 10 states. Its services include the sale of new and pre-owned boats, parts and accessories, finance and insurance products, maintenance and repair services, and ancillary services such as boat storage.

“Bob Roscioli founded Roscioli Yachting Center with the mantra ‘Today’s the Day’, which is echoed by the OneWater team,” said Austin Singleton, CEO of OneWater. “We are incredibly proud to welcome the Roscioli team to the OneWater family and to blend their industry-leading skillset with our proven strategic vision. Together, we believe we will redefine the gold standard of yacht servicing and customer experience.”

Mr. Roscioli, who founded and built the yard over the past 50 years, died in July . He had recently tested positive for COVID-19.

OneWater recently acquired Tom George Yacht Group and Walker Marine Group, two brokerage firms and dealerships in Southwest Florida. Its shares closed yesterday at $29.65.

Roscioli Yachting Center Founder Bob Roscioli Dies

Bob Roscioli, founder and owner of Fort Lauderdale’s Roscioli Yachting Center, has died.

Roscioli, who was a marine industry icon, passed away on Monday, July 27 after being hospitalised with COVID-19, according to reports.

Beginning his career as an apprentice in 1962, Roscioli went on to become a well-known industry figure in the South Florida marine industry.

His career spanned many notable achievements, including the foundation of the state-of-the-art, full-service shipyard Roscioli Yacht Center.

It was here he became known for personally checking each project to ensure the highest quality was maintained, gaining a reputation as a meticulous perfectionist.

In the 1980s, he began building custom sportfishing yachts with Roscioli Deonzi Yachts, a long-held ambition.

A statement released by the Roscioli Yacht Center said: “Bob’s mantra “Today’s the Day” is the way he started every day at the yard. He could be seen walking the shipyard every morning, preparing for the day ahead.

“A true friend to first responders and veterans, Bob was an advocate of providing jobs and teaching those who have served or needed a chance. A true legacy to the marine industry.”

Voronezh Oblast, Russia

The capital city of Voronezh oblast: Voronezh .

Voronezh Oblast is a federal subject of Russia, part of the Central Federal District. Voronezh is the capital city of the region.

History of Voronezh Oblast

The first people began to settle in the territory of the present Voronezh region in the Paleolithic age, about 30 thousand years ago. In the Iron Age, this region became part of Scythia. Then the Sarmatians came to replace the Scythians. It is assumed that they gave the name to the Don River.

In the early Middle Ages, the Alans, the descendants of the Sarmatians, moved on to a settled way of life, mastered the skills of urban culture and entered into a complex symbiosis with nomads (the Bulgars and the Khazars). In the 7th century, the steppe part of the region became the territory of the Khazar Kaganate.

In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began to settle in the north of the region. Central and southern areas were controlled by nomadic tribes. In the first half of the 13th century, during the Mongol invasion, the ancient Russian settlements were destroyed, and Voronezh land for several centuries turned into a so-called “wild field” crossed by the main Tatar roads - Nogai and Kalmius roads.

In the 15th century, several districts up to the Khopyor River, the Vorona River and the mouth of the Voronezh River were part of the Ryazan principality, but the Russian settlements here were few in number. Between the Russian territory and the Tatar nomads lay a vast, devastated by nomadic raids, neutral buffer land.

More historical facts…

In 1521, the Ryazan principality became part of the Moscow state, which opened the way for the beginning of the Russian colonization of these territories. The Cossacks began to form from the Christian population of the region that assimilated certain elements of the culture of nomads.

In 1585, in place of the Cossack village, Voronezh was founded as a fortress of the Moscow state on the border of the Wild Field. For more than 50 years Voronezh was the only town on the territory of the present Voronezh region. Up to the 17th century, the Tatar raids on the Voronezh land continued.

In 1696, by decision and with the personal participation of Peter I, a shipyard was built on Voronezh land for the construction of the first Russian fleet - the foothold for the development of the Black Sea region. From here the Azov campaigns of Peter I began. The centers of Russian colonization in the east of the region were the towns of Borisoglebsk (1698) and Novokhopersk (1716).

In 1711, (after the loss of Azov), Voronezh became a provincial town, the administrative center of the Azov gubernia (province). In the 18th century, the development of the entire territory of the region began. In 1725, the province received the name of Voronezh.

Voronezh Governorate became one of the main bread baskets of the Russian Empire. In the 1860-1870s, railways passed through the territory of the region and connected Central Russia with South Ukraine, the North Caucasus and the Trans-Volga. The region’s economy remained largely agrarian.

In 1934, Voronezh Oblast was established. In 1937, Tambov Oblast was singled out of the Voronezh region. During the Second World War, it became the scene of fierce battles. The city of Voronezh was almost completely destroyed. In 1954, large western and northern territories were transferred to Belgorod and Lipetsk oblasts. In 1957, the boundaries of Voronezh Oblast took the current form.

In the mid-1960s, the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant was built, the Stavropol-Moscow gas pipeline passed through the territory of the region. Voronezh became a major center of the country’s military-industrial complex. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was created.
