  • Annapolis Sailboat Show Preview of 10 Brand New Boats

With America’s largest in-the-water sailboat show only two weeks away, we are pleased to offer a quick look at 10 of the new cruising boats that will debut there.

The show, which takes over the Annapolis waterfront for four days, is a true happening of sailing, with scores of boats on display and hundreds of vendors plying their goods and services. For many die-hard sailors, the annual trip to the Annapolis sailboat show is almost a pilgrimage. We’ll see you there.

Allures 51.9

The new Allures 51.9 from the French builder follows in the wake of the successful 51 and 52.  With an aluminum hull, a centerboard and twin rudders, the 51.9 is a blue water cruiser capable of exploring world’s oceans in safety and style. Note the double-headsail rig, the in-mast furling mainsail and the hard dodger at the front of the cockpit. Blue water sailors will feel right at home aboard her.

We had a first look at the brand-new Bali 5.8 at the Cannes boat show in early September and came away impressed by just how enormous the new cat is. From the huge flybridge and upper lounge to the cockpit-saloon living areas to the spacious lounge and sunning area on the fore deck, everything appears over-sized.  The 5.8 is a giant playpen for fun and casual cruising.

Here’s our full review of the new 44-foot from the famous French builder that we published in Cruising Compass last week.

Over the last four years, the French builder Dufour, which is celebrating its 60 th  anniversary, has reinvented their brand with interesting and roomy new designs from the wizards at Felci Yachts.

The new 37 and 41 were given hulls with hefty beams, very full sections forward and a hard chine that runs all the way aft. This combination results in interior spaces the likes of which Dufour has never offered before.

The all new 44, which was introduced earlier this year, takes that theme and runs with it.  The 44, which measures out to 45 feet with the bowsprit, has a 40-foot waterline and 14 feet, six inches of maximum beam. The ample volume forward makes room for either twin double cabins in the fore peak or a massive master stateroom. Read more.

Garcia Exploration 52

The new Garcia Exploration 52 from the French builder of aluminum voyaging yachts, is a large and capable 50-footer. With an unpainted hull you can see just how sweetly and solidly the Garcia craftsmen have constructed the hull. It’s impressive and you would feel comfortable sailing her anywhere from the ice of the high latitudes or to the reefs of the south Pacific. Built by and for blue water sailors the new Exploration 52 will be worth studying to see how this kind of voyaging excellence is built.

The new HH 44, built in China by the entrepreneur Hudson Wang, takes all of the design and build qualities of the large, luxurious HH cats and condenses them down into a smaller and more affordable package. You too could own an HH cat. A performance cruiser, the 44 will get you where you want to go at speed and will be a ton of fun to sail. And, she’s large enough for a family to live aboard for long periods of time.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350

It is hard to believe that it was 12 years ago when I took the then brand new Sun Odyssey 349 out for a test sail on Biscayne Bay in a pleasant trade wind easterly and had my jaw drop at the little pocket cruiser’s sailing performance. Plus, with square ends and chines, the 349 had the interior volume of a modern 37 footer.

Now, 2500 hulls later, that incredibly successful Jeanneau is being retired and in its place an all-new SO 350 has been introduced for 2024. Designed by Marc Lombard, the 350 has a reversed bow, an angled stern and a flat or even slightly convex sheer line. The hull is the widest in this class of cruisers at 11’9” and, with the chines, interior volume has been maximized. Read more.

With its American Premiere at the Annapolis show, the new Leopard 46 is a handsome addition to the Leopard fleet. Built in South Africa for the Moorings and Sunsail charter fleets and for the private-owner Leopard fleet, the 46 embodies all that the builder and the extensive team behind each boat have learned over the course of 20 plus years and thousands of boats launched and used. This is a cruising cat that instills great confidence and you know it will look after you in bad weather and good.

This Italian racer-cruiser does just about everything well and it does it with true Mediterranean style. The lines are sleek, the deck and cockpit low and streamlined and the rig designed for fast, weatherly sailing. When you climb aboard a Solaris, you are struck immediately by the quality and integrity of their boats. Everything fits a sailor’s eye and  brain. If you’ve got that need for speed, the new 40 will be of real interest.

Making its North America debut, the new Widelo 54 is the big sister to the 50 that was introduced a couple of years ago.  The concept behind the Windelo designs is to produce a blue water capable cruising catamaran that can be almost entirely sustainable, both coastal cruising and when heading far off the beaten track.  Large solar arrays provide the power and careful engineering creates a package that will keep your carbon footprint as small as possible in a cat that will make a fine floating home.

Xquisite 60 Solar

The South African-based catamaran builder never ceases to innovate and surprise. The new 60 Solar is a true breath of future fresh air. It is first of all a spacious and beautifully build family cruising boat, which is large enough to sail around the world. Plus, it is set up as a couple’s boat, so it is easy to sail. But, the commitment to electric power and the advanced technical systems puts the new 60 on a different plane. You have to meet the builder, Tamas Hamor, and have him walk you through the details. You’ll be fascinated.

The 23 Best Annual Boat Shows by Month and Location

If you are a boat enthusiast and haven’t been to a boat show in a while, you are certainly missing out. Check out your favorite boat brands in person, and meet with fellow boat lovers and industry experts all in one place.

This article lists the 23 best annual boat shows by month and location so you can make your arrangements beforehand. Learn from the experts and take your hobby to the next level.

Why are Boat Shows Popular? | boat show calendar

Boat shows are popular since they allow the general public to learn and understand the industry better and appreciate and adopt the boating lifestyle. Boat shows are an industry itself, with different international organizations focused on managing and staging boat shows annually.

They are held in all 50 states and throughout the globe in various countries. The season generally starts in October and continues till March. Most small and regional shows are held at marinas or inside convention centers, which makes them easy to browse.

What to do at a boat show?

Boats for sale are, without a doubt, the main attraction of a boat show , but there’s so much more you can do while attending one. From trying new foods to indulging in different water activities, a boat show has a lot to offer.

  • Bring a camera or a notebook to record notes along with information on different boat sellers, and be sure to hand them your business card. This will help you solidify your network.
  • By interacting with the dealers, check out brand-new deals and the latest boating technology.
  • Browse through the shops and take home a souvenir or two.
  • Get “hands-on” knowledge regarding a boat or a boating accessory by attending a seminar or workshop to see their inner workings.
  • Indulge in some delectable foods from the stalls.
  • Some boat shows offer water activities, such as fishing and scuba diving. Grab your friends and family and make new memories with those fun aquatic adventures.
You got your event admission (tickets) and ready to see the attractions along with the gathering of attendees & boaters. Make sure to look for bargains for you to purchase and boat displays and latest boat models. Expect to se clothing for boaters and learn about the latest boat devices and electronics (products/accessories/technology) from special exhibits by big name exhibitors. All this will add to the experience for a watercraft show whether it was put on by an insurance company or a boating industry association. Yacht shows could even have brokerages or NMMA/BoatUS booths.

Are boat shows the best time to buy? | Do boat shows have good deals

Boat shows are an excellent time for dealers to display their products and make big sales. Since the competition is fierce, you can most likely avail of big discounts and benefit from good deals. You also get the opportunity to browse a huge variety of boats and select one that fits your needs perfectly. You can get expert advice about vessels you’re interested in from competitors since they’re more likely to point out drawbacks or flaws of the craft.

At the end of the day, the best time to buy a boat is when you’re ready for investment and adventure. Whether you buy a boat from a boat show, through a broker, or privately through a website, do a thorough background check and get an unbiased second opinion.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Below deck sailing yacht season 5’s daisy kelliher has changed (is she having a breakdown), below deck sailing yacht season 5 could humble gary king (he needs to be knocked down a peg).

Gary King should've been fired after Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, but producers can still save the Bravo spin-off. As a popular iteration of the Below Deck franchise, the show takes place aboard a luxury sailing yacht and follows the lives of the yacht’s crew as they navigate the challenges of providing high-end service to demanding guests while living and working together in tight quarters, headed by Captain Glenn Shephard. However, the show has gained more attention for problematic first officer Gary than for navigating a unique sailing vessel.

While Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 has yet to be released, it was allegedly filmed. Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 aired beginning in April 2023, and featured Chef Ileisha Dell, Gary, Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher, and Chief Engineer Colin MacRae, among others. Romantic drama was a central theme, especially around the love triangle between Daisy, Gary, and Colin . Colin and Daisy's relationship began to blossom, which caused tension with Gary, who had unresolved feelings for Daisy. Amid Gary's bad behavior, only the producers can save Below Deck Sailing Yacht .

Producers Should Be More Involved On-Screen When Possible

They need to ensure safety onboard.

Involving producers more prominently on-screen in Below Deck Sailing Yacht could be a crucial step in preventing issues like Gary's sexual misconduct scandal from recurring. By playing a more active, visible role in the show, producers can address inappropriate behavior in real time and provide necessary checks and balances that maintain a safer , more respectful environment onboard. This proactive approach could help avoid misconduct and the negative fallout that stems from unchecked crew interactions. How many times have drunken antics veered into the uncomfortable?

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Gary's unacceptable behavior towards makeup artist Samantha Suarez is far from the only sketchy situation in the Below Deck franchise. For example, In Below Deck Mediterranean season 5, tensions between crew members Hannah Ferrier and Captain Sandy got out of control, leading to Hannah’s dismissal over her Valium and vape pen. A producer's direct involvement in clarifying the rules or facilitating communication between the captain and crew could have helped resolve the situation in a more balanced manner. Instead, the lack of transparency created unnecessary drama and confusion.

Additionally, Below Deck Mediterranean season 6 saw Lexi Wilson become embroiled in an uncomfortable feud with the rest of the cast. Despite physical and emotional escalation, it took far too long for proper intervention on the part of the producers. A more visible producer could have de-escalated the situation before it worsened.

Perhaps the worst example of production waiting too long to intervene was in Below Deck season 7, when Ashton Pienaar’s behavior towards Kate Chastain on a drunken night out, spiraled into punching glass and threatening Kate's safety. If the producers had been more visibly involved at that moment, Kate wouldn't have felt the need to leave the yacht.

Producers Have Learned From Their Mistakes With Gary's Behavior

They know when to step in.

Producers made major mistakes in how they dealt with Gary's scandal. While he was uninvited to BravoCon in 2023, Gary allegedly filmed Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 , which is probably why it's taken so long to release. In response to fan backlash, the producers have likely attempted to edit out or severely reduce Gary's presence in Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. It might be better for them to completely scrap the season. While this would be an expensive choice, it's worth showing that they have a zero tolerance for abusive and problematic cast members.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht producers need to prove their dedication to cast and crew safety by getting rid of Gary as soon as possible.

There is hope for the future of Below Deck Sailing Yacht . Regardless of the bungle with Gary's situation, Below Deck producers have shown a greater willingness to address inappropriate behavior directly on the show. The show allows audiences to see the incidents rather than sweeping them under the rug, as evidenced in Bosun Luke Jones' attempted assault on Margot Sisson. This demonstrates that producers are more willing to take immediate action rather than let the storyline evolve as drama for entertainment value.

Fans have been increasingly vocal about Gary and other production issues on social media platforms, and producers have begun listening to audience concerns about the portrayal of consent and inappropriate behavior. In response to these conversations, future seasons will continue to show sensitivity regarding controversial situations. Additionally, Below Deck producers need to take accountability for their role in perpetuating or ending dangerous situations for crew members.

Will Producers Have More Of A Role On Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?

They will become more visible.

Producers will likely take on a greater role in Below Deck Sailing Yacht as a direct response to the backlash surrounding Gary’s return after sexual misconduct allegations. Their increased involvement is essential to protect the show’s reputation, which is severely tarnished after not firing Gary despite the obvious threat to cast and crew safety. Given the intensity of the backlash, producers may adopt a more hands-on role in both casting decisions and on-set behavior. Otherwise, Below Deck Sailing Yacht could be in trouble.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5's Daisy Kelliher has changed since the last charter of the series according to the trailer for the upcoming season.

Below Deck producers will likely need to implement stricter vetting processes for future cast members to avoid hiring individuals with a history of problematic behavior. Gary had been a sketchy and problematic cast member for years before the drunken incident with Samantha. Furthermore, producers could intervene more proactively during filming to prevent any incidents from escalating, and they may be more involved in addressing conflicts between crew members. Given other incidents in the past, it's obvious that producers would let situations get out of control rather than prioritize safety.

The entertainment industry is undergoing a cultural shift toward accountability, with reality TV stars facing greater scrutiny for their actions. In the Love Is Blind franchise, producers were accused of giving contestants an abundance of alcohol without food. Additionally, Renee Poche was forced to continue filming with her ex-fiance Carter Wall despite his problematic behavior and questions about her safety.

The producers of Below Deck Sailing Yacht will have to reflect this trend by taking complaints and accusations more seriously. For example, in response to a similar situation in Bachelor in Paradise , producers enforced stricter on-set rules after a scandal. This precedent suggests that Below Deck Sailing Yacht will need to follow suit to maintain its fanbase. Hopefully, producers are up to the task of prioritizing safety while continuing to offer top-notch entertainment on the high seas.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres October 7 on Bravo.

First look inside first wallywind110 debuting at the Monaco Yacht Show

Galma: First look inside the first wallywhy100 sailing yacht

Ferretti Group has offered a first look inside the first unit in its wallywind110 series, Galma , currently debuting at the Monaco Yacht Show .

The sailing yacht hit the water in June 2024 and marked the first semi-custom sail model launched by Wally since its acquisition in 2019. Galma was also the first unit to be officially launched in Ravenna.

Measuring 33.4 metres, the model's naval architecture comes from German studio judel/vrolijk & co . Galma is characterised by a 6.9-metre telescopic keel and an all-carbon hull that has been painted in "a luminous light metallic blue that changes slightly as the light hits her".

"Ever since Wally came into the universe of Ferretti Group, it has carried on being Wally," said Alberto Galassi, Ferretti Group CEO. “With the wallywind110, we’ve managed to introduce something that is distinct: the boats are completely customisable staying true to Wally’s tradition, but with Ferretti Group industrial approach, so no two will ever look the same."

Accommodation is across four guest cabins and three crew cabins, including a master cabin with desk space. There is also the option to install a bar, office or television room. Interior design is owed to Wally's team, headed by Luca Bassani in collaboration with Santa Maria Magnolfi . Newly-released imagery reveals an airy, casual aesthetic that incorporates light woods, pale upholstery and carbon fibre detailing for an industrial edge.

The raised saloon has an open-plan layout, with space for dining, lounging and working. It also benefits from natural light thanks to a skylight that runs the full length of the coachroof.

According to the shipyard, the wallywind100 focuses on combining the comfort of a cruising yacht with the spirit and performance of a racing boat. To this end, Galma has an 80-square-metre full-beam cockpit with seating and dining for up to 15 people, with customisation options available so that owners can make the most of this waterfront area.

Wally has already begun work on a second hull, which will display "some slight differences and optimisations" according to the shipyard.

New Yachts on the Market: Latest Racing & Cruising Designs

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350 - yacht

In the market for a racing or cruising yacht? It’s been another bumper year for the boatbuilding industry… Sam Jefferson casts his eye over the latest launches.

New yachts: cruising, wauquiez 55.

Wauquiez is a marque that has been much revered in cruising circles since they first started building elegant cruisers back in the 1960s. Their new 55 boat is definitely intriguing and one of the striking features is the centre cockpit with the helm offset to port under a well protected solid plexiglass sprayhood.  Another interesting feature is the option of a swing keel which gives you an almighty 4.2m of draft when lowered and 1.6m when raised. Aside from that, the boat dares to be different by supplying two Volvo D2 engines as standard.  The interior looks extremely spacious and Lombard has capitalised on full forward sections and plenty of beam to ensure that there is a huge interior space. In addition, the centre cockpit allows for a huge aft owner’s cabin.

Moody 48 DS

Moody has been under German ownership as part of the Hanse group for many years now and offers a different sort of cruiser in quality deck saloon cruisers which are designed by Judel/Vrolijk. The new 48 is the first new launch they have made since their 41 2017 and fits between the Moody 45 and 54 in their range. As you’d expect, this is a boat that is big on space and comfort, featuring a big, beamy hull with twin rudders. Performance has not been neglected, however, because she sports a generous rig to push her 21,000kg displacement through the water.

Inspirationmarine.co.uk

Moody - cruising yacht

Hanse Yachts broke with go to designer of many years Judel/Vrolijk a couple of years back and this was the catalyst behind the launch of a new generation of Hanses designed by the French team of Berret/Racoupeau. In addition to a marked change in styling, with inverted ‘dreadnought bow and hard chines aft giving the boats a more angular look, the main drive seemed to be to up the quality of the boats down below – which was certainly achieved. The new 590 is their biggest boat yet of this new generation and offers easy sailing on a big scale. The new boat features an optional hard top bimini, a tender garage and acres of space down below. The boat will be officially unveiled at Cannes Boat show and promises to be a head turner.

New Cruising Yacht: Maxus 35

Maxus Yachts is a Polish company that made its name. building small trailerable yachts to sail on the Masurian lakes not far from the Russian border. Now the company has moved up a size bracket and their new 35 is bigger and aimed more at offshore sailing than previous designs. The result is a spacious yacht with striking styling and a semi deck saloon arrangement that bathes the saloon with natural light. It all points to promises decent performance and accommodation at a highly competitive price.

northman.pl

French manufacturer Dufour has really pumped up the volume with its latest generation of yachts. The new Umberto Felci designed 44 follows on from the 37 and 41 which have already drawn plaudits thanks to their remarkable ability to create internal volume without looking overly dumpy. The 44 continues in this vein boasting plentiful beam aft and full sections at the bow above the waterline. The interior is positively palatial and there is a choice of three or four cabin layouts.

dufour-yachts.com

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350 is the successor to the 349 which was actually launched way back in 2013. At 34’1” excluding the bowsprit she is the starter boat in the range and viewed by the French manufacturer as offering a gateway into sailing for young families.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350 - cruising yacht

The boat is designed by Marc Lombard and Piaton Yacht design and, as you’d expect the lines are bang up to date, offering plenty of internal volume via fuller forward sections. Like its predecessor the 349, the new boat is available with a swing keel – a real boon in UK waters. The interior is really quite large and there is the option of twin doubles aft plus a double forward.

Elan GT6 Explorer

The Elan GT6 was a very stylish fast cruiser from drawing board of rob Humphreys that has been very well received since its launch. The GT6 Explorer is, as you can imagine a variation on this theme but the manufacturers have identified rthe potential of the boat as a fast blue water cruiser and built on that. As such, the boat fuel and water tankage has been boosted as has battery power. There is also the option of an all electric version utilising Oceanvolt’s pioneering technology.

elan-yachts.com

Elan GT6 Explorer

It has been some years since Danish manufacturers X Yachts realised that if they offered a de tuned Xc cruising range alongside its out and out performance yachts, it would massively enlarge its customer base. The project was a huge success and the Xc range is now into its second generation with the launch of the Xc47. The new launch is one of the first since X Yachts divorce from founder and chief designer Niels Jeppesen and the result is a yacht that leans heavily towards the cruising market, featuring something not far from a deck saloon. The hull lines feature plenty of beam aft and there has obviously been a very conscious effort to up the cruising ante. That said, the boat retains a powerful rig and weight has been kept reasonably modest.

New Yachts: Racing

Cf 580 ran 8.

Ran 8 is one of the latest launches from the drawing board of Shaun Carkeek and is a boat that has already cut a dash by taking overall and line honours in the RORC Channel Race. This is a boat that comes from the same mould as Oystercatcher XXXV, launched to much fanfare in 2021. The new boat boasts an uprated water ballast system which is designed to reduce the number of crew required from eight to seven. In addition to this, electric propulsion has been introduced.

Ran, SWE 520 - needles racing

The boat is not designed to one particular set of rules and the main aim is simply to design a boat that will go as fast as possible in a range of conditions. The result is a boat optimised for offshore conditions, in which she will be somewhat quicker than a TP52.

carkeekdesignpartners.com

Jeanneau Sun Fast 30

The Sun Fast 30 is a VPLP project who have teamed up with Multiplast to produce a strict one design yacht at what Jeanneau feels is a competitive price. The new boat features full forward sections married to light (2,700kg) displacement, twin rudders and flat aft sections to provide a boat that planes easily and early. The boat is available in two versions: One Design and Club. The one design version features a carbon mast mainsheet track and uprated electronics pack. The Club version has an aluminium mast and a bridle for the mainsheet. The aim is to make it more affordable to club racers.

Clubswan 28: Racing

The Clubswan 28 is a something of a break from tradition for Nautor Swan who have never produced a yacht this small. She rounds off their ClubSwan range and is a pure one design racer set up for four crew. At 1000kg, this Juan Kouyoumdijan design is going to be fast but she appears to be much less technical than boats higher up the range, eschewing foils and keeping things as simple as possible. There is no accommodation.

nautorswan.com

Clubswan 28

Reichel/Pugh 56 Vasara

The design house of Reichel/Pugh has produced some memorable yachts over the years and  the design brief here was for a fast, competitive yacht that was also comfortable and luxuriously appointed down below. There are a number of interesting touches. Most notably, a split backstay and square topped mainsail can be switched out for a single backstay and standard main when cruising. The keel has a substantial 4.1m depth but this can be raised to 2.4m for entering port. The interior is constructed almost exclusively out of carbon but a thin veneer of wood is placed over this to soften things up. The result is a sleek and versatile racer/cruiser.

New Yachts: Bluewater Cruisers

Bestavaer 36.

Bestavaer Yachts is a Dutch boatbuilder specialising in steel construction. They are reputed for building handsome steel ‘go anywhere’ yachts, generally in the 50-70’ bracket. The announcement of an all new 36 footer is therefore something of a surprise and not an unwelcome one. The new boat marries a big rig with a decent displacement ot provide a boat that is both seaworthy but none too slow. As with her bigger sisters, the 36 is designed to be a very practical ctuiser and is therefore equipped with a swing keel which will allow her to take the ground when required and the draft is a mere 0.7m with the board up and a substantial 2.4m with the board down.

bestavaer.com

Boreal Yachts sit in that very French cadre of utilitarian aluminium ‘go anywhere’ yachts much loved by soul sailors who idolise Moitessier and dream of communing with the albatross. Yet these soul sailors seem to have developed a taste for a spot of luxury too and the Boreal 70 is typical of the latest iteration of these hardy swing keel boats in that she is huge and surprisingly well appointed, boating such luxuries as a dishwasher should you so wish to choose that option. Sacre bleu! Nevertheless, this is a tough go anywhere cruiser which is at home in the tropics or the high latitudes.

Hallberg Rassy 69

Swedish manufacturer Hallberg Rassy is an institution in the world of blue water cruising. Yet it’s an institution that isn’t afraid to evolve and many were shocked when the boatbuilder started to introduce twin rudders and broader aft sections to its designs. The 69 is another step forward, being the largest boat ever built by the Swedes and nudging towards the cadre of pocket superyacht. The boat is designed by German Frers and features a big rig and contemporary lines familiar to those who are familiar with the most recent launches from the yard. The difference with the 69 is she is just a lot bigger and more luxurious. Far not though, the trademark Hallberg Rassy armchairs are still an option.

Contest 63CS

Dutch boatbuilder Contest is famed for building high quality blue water cruisers and their all new 63CS looks straight out of that playbook. Designed by their go to nabal architects Judel/Vrolijk, this is a big, luxurious cruising yacht that will boat good performance particularly for those who love a spot of tradewind sailing. This is a centre cockpit yacht with a relatively modest 31,900kg displacement and a decent sail area pointing to a very versatile long distance cruiser.

New Yachts: Performance Cruisers

Grand soleil blue.

Italian manufacturer Grand Soleil seems to have been producing ever larger cruiser/racers so news of the launch of the Grand soleil Blue, a 30’ weekender is welcome. The boat is very interesting as it is the first fully recyclable production yacht built in Italy and features biodegradable resins in construction meaning that the boat ban be separated out and re used at the end of the boats life. The boat also features and electric motor and sails made of recycled materiels. The design is clearly performance oriented but there is pleasant and stylish weekend accommodation.

Grand Soleil Blue - bluewater cruiser

Saffier SL 46

Dutch manufacturer Saffier Yachts has specialised in turning out fast, stylish weekend sailers with an emphasis on performance and ease of use. That is, until now. By launching the new SL 46 the boatbuilders has moved into an altogether new realm as this boat is unquestionably a cruiser/racer capable of offshore passages. This is an intriguing move, as it pitches Saffier against a plethora of established operators such as Grand Soleil, Italia Yachts, even Beneteau and Jeanneau. Anyway, the SL 46 looks the part, featuring modern aggressive styling couple to a big rig, light displacement and a deep, T-shaped keel. The interior looks stylish and luxurious and the boat is available with the option of a tender garage – something of an oddity in a 46 footer.

saffieryachts.com

Saffier SL 46

Tofinou 7.9

The new Tofinou 7.9 follows in the vein of other yachts in their range in that she is a performance oriented modern classic day sailer. As the name suggests, the boat is 7.9m making her the smallest boat in the range and she is available with a swing keel or fixed T shaped keel. The boat is available with an electric outboard or a diesel inboard and offers a blend of lustrous woods and light carbon laminates which gives the boat a classy air while also promising exhilarating sailing. There is also a small double berth forward if you do want to spend a night afloat.

tofinou.com

La Rochelle based RM Yachts has made a name for itself by being the last company standing when it comes to the mass production of epoxy/ply yachts. This is partly because it’s hideously complicated to put together an epoxy/ply yacht. The result, however, is a lightweight yacht that is stiff and strong. RM has made a name for building sporty cruiser/racers with the option of lift, fixed or bilge keels. The 1080 is a welcome mid sized addition to their range. Designed by Marc Lombard, the 1080 features plenty of beam aft, fullish forward sections and generous sail area. The looks are distinctive and the cockpit layout is innovative plus interior space is impressive.

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

A celebration turned into tragedy for a british tycoon when the storm sank the vessel off sicily. six people remain missing., by henry austin and corky siemaszko | nbc news • published august 21, 2024 • updated on august 21, 2024 at 4:08 pm.

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard  Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored,  about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter  of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

Missing revealed as divers search superyacht that sank in storm off Sicily

sail yacht shows

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world,  according to  CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers  resumed the search for Lynch  and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was  acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges  stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to  adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

Henry Austin reported from London and Corky Siemaszko from New York City.
