Develop your skills with our RYA Powerboat Level 2 

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is our most popular course. Clients include those that are new to powerboating, existing boat owners and students who would like to charter (hire) a powerboat either in the UK or abroad. At Marine and Site Training we include a free  ICC assessment  (International Certificate of Competence) which is the license required for European waters, and guidance on applying for this. 

Is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course right for me?

The Powerboat Level 2 course is designed to give students an understanding of powerboating under the guidance of a highly experienced and qualified RYA powerboat instructor. This two day course focuses on developing your boat handling, safety and navigation skills. It is the perfect training course for complete beginners that will prepare you to take out a powerboat by yourself. However, it is also suitable for seasoned powerboaters looking to consolidate their experience with the principles of the  RYA  scheme.

Previous experience?

No this course is suitable for all students over the age of 12 years old.

Students under 16 will have their certificates endorsed as follows: “To be under the supervision of a responsible adult”.

What will I learn?

The RYA powerboat level 2 course will teach you about all aspects of boat handling, including: anchoring, securing to a mooring buoy, turning in confined spaces, coming alongside, man overboard techniques, knowledge of equipment, towing, high speed manoeuvres, rules of the road and pilotage and passage planning.

Course Itinerary

Your first day of powerboat training will begin with a full safety brief and introduction to the boats,You will then have time to familiarise yourself with the boat’s controls and the river environment before we start practising different manoeuvres.

This will all be done within the River Mersey, making it as real life as possible for when you decide to start boating solo. You will stop for lunch to cement your new found skills before we take back to the water for more slow speed manoeuvres.

The second day will start with a theory session before departing down the river for more manoeuvring,The second day will finish up with some high speed manoeuvres and man over board techniques before we depart back to our private slipway for course debriefing and certificates.

Activities you can do at Liverpool Watersports Centre

Swan Pedalos

You can rent out the Swan Pedalos for £20 for 30 minutes and experience the breathtaking waterfront view with up to four other individuals, making it enjoyable for the whole family.

Kayaks and Canoes

With the help of kayak and canoe sessions, you can see the docks in a way you've never seen them before. 

Powerboating

While admiring the Liverpool docks, take in the thrill and adrenaline of powerboating.

For people or groups like families, coworkers, friends, kids' football teams, stag and hen parties, birthday parties, scouts, girl guides, and schools, the Aqua Park is especially fantastic.

Stand Up Paddleboarding

Try out the fastest growing watersports and paddle through the dock system into Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock and back.

Open Water Swimming

Swimming in open water is an excellent way to stay in shape, manage stress, make new friends, and have fun. Even better, Liverpool Watersports Centre offers the chance to swim in the city's historic docks.

With roll-on, roll-off access, the centre's first totally accessible powerboat can seat up to 10 individuals, including six wheelchair users.

Sailing and Windsurfing

Dinghy sailing and windsurfing are available to adults and kids of all skill levels at the Liverpool Watersports Centre.

Based from our fully equipped centre on the waterfront at New Brighton, you can commence your training with the basic RYA Level 1 powerboat course progressing on through the RYA powerboat scheme, RYA Level 2 Powerboat, RYA Intermediate Powerboat, RYA Advanced Powerboat, picking up on the way, if required, any of the following shorebased courses. Marine VHF Radio/SRC, RYA First Aid, Diesel Engine maintenance, Day Skipper Theory and Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory.

Covering the theory and practical skills needed to become a competent powerboat driver, the course focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, driving at planning speed and collision regulations.

Powerboating comes to the River Mersey

TOP-LEVEL powerboat racing will come to Liverpool as part of this year’s new-look Mersey River Festival.

The P1 SuperStock Championship, called Race To Liverpool, will start next month in Jersey.

It will take in Plymouth, Hull and Cowes before a finale on the River Mersey on September 10 and 11.

Brand-new racing boats – the P1 Panther – will hit the water for the first time during the race.

Powerboat P1 commercial director James Durbin was today giving a senior councillor a sneak preview of the new boats direct from a factory in the USA.

Six of the fleet were on display outside the Maritime Museum, at Albert Dock.

Cllr Wendy Simon, cabinet member for culture, said: "It is an honour to host the final Powerboat P1 race and it is wonderful we can incorporate it within the much-anticipated return of the Mersey River Festival.

"The race will be a fantastic spectacle and is sure to attract thousands of people who will enjoy an adrenaline-fuelled event.

"For Powerboat enthusiasts to get a first glimpse of the newly- launched boats in action is a real coup for Liverpool and is yet another reason for people to visit our World Heritage waterfront in September."

The Mersey River Festival will return for the first time since 2005 and will be part of the city’s final On The Waterfront celebrations of 2011.

The festival will run from September 8-15 and will feature a Royal naval visit, historic Tall Ships and Cunard cruise liners, including the new Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary 2.

RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc.

If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore.

If you need a Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate in order to work on a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed . You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 6 waters - that is up to 3 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight hours.
