Mumby 48 catamaran build

Building a performance catamaran.

Building a performance aluminum sailing catamaran is a complex project that requires expertise in naval architecture, metalwork, and boat building. Here’s a breakdown to get you started:

mumby 48 catamaran builders

Design Considerations:

  • Performance vs Cruising: Decide on the priority. Performance cats are lighter and faster, sacrificing some living space and amenities. Cruising cats offer more comfort and storage.
  • Size: Larger offers more space but is trickier to handle. Smaller is easier to manage but less roomy.
  • Daggerboards vs. Keels: Daggerboards provide better performance in shallow waters, while keels improve stability and tracking.
  • Plans vs. Custom Design: Stock plans are available but may not be perfect for your needs. A custom design offers more personalization but requires a naval architect.

aluminum catamaran build

Building Process:

  • Professional Build: Hiring a qualified aluminum boat builder is recommended for safety and quality.
  • DIY Build: Requires significant metalworking skills, tools, and a workspace. Not for beginners.
  • Cutting and shaping aluminum plates.
  • Welding the hull sections.
  • Installing decks, bulkheads, and interior components.
  • Rigging the masts and sails.
  • Design Catalogs: Companies like Tim Mumby and De Villiers offer performance aluminium catamaran designs [Tim Mumby catamaran design] [De Villiers Aluminium Catamaran].
  • Boat Builders: Search for experienced aluminum boat builders in your area.
  • Forums: Online forums like Sailing Anarchy offer discussions on performance catamaran building [Sailing Anarchy performance catamaran design].

Additional Considerations:

  • Costs: Building a custom aluminum catamaran can be very expensive. Factor in materials, labor, and permits.
  • Safety: Aluminum is strong but requires proper welding techniques to ensure structural integrity.
  • Regulations: Ensure your design complies with relevant maritime safety regulations.

Building a performance aluminum catamaran is a challenging yet rewarding project. Carefully consider your needs, resources, and experience before embarking on this endeavor.

catamaran MUMBY 48 (vente suspendue)

mumby 48 catamaran builders

On the multihull market, there are few units built in aluminum! Excessive manufacturing costs, replicability using impossible molds, image of aluminum as being an unsuitable material for the construction of multihulls (totally false of course!!), yet this fantastic construction material has proven itself! This MUMBY 48 is an all-terrain boat equipped with lifting appendages (the key to any successful multihull). The construction is superb, the equipment and preparation carried out by a very competent and qualified skipper owner. Lots of new equipment (plumbing, electricity, electronics, watermaker, heating, annex…..). A good-running multihull, perfectly suited to long-distance off-piste cruising Description NAUTILUS is a Tim Mumby designed 48 foot Aluminium Performance Sailing Catamaran. The Mumby 48 is well renowned worldwide for strength, speed and safety. Many examples have circumnavigated (see YouTube: Sailing Jupiter). NAUTILUS is fully off grid and fitted out for extended passage making. With three double cabins and one single berth. Recently equipped for world cruising NAUTILUS was Initially built and launched in 2015 with hulls, insulation, engines, rigging, spars and sails completed.

Internals were completed in 2022/23 with all new equipment from hull up: wiring, plumbing, electronics, head linings, galley, toilets, showers, deck upgrades, heating, rudder upgrades, water maker, painted, antifouled. NAUTILUS is a pedigree aluminium performance cruising catamaran. She is ready to cruise the world, but could benefit from some completion internally such as shelves and some internal linings. Pipework and wiring have deliberately been left exposed for easy maintenance. She has been fitted out with the lightest materials. And where lining materials were not needed, the hull/insulation was left bare, which saves weight. A critical component of fast cruising Cats is to keep them light and not to overload them. The interior is spray insulated with 1 – 2″ closed cell foam and lined with Garnica ultralight ply strips on the ceilings and hull sides. There are some head linings and hull lining needing completed. She is not perfect in terms of finish. And has a few minor dents and scratches. If you do dent or damage the hulls you can simply cut out the offending piece and weld in a new plate. That is the beauty of aluminium. Plus, being non corrosive, the hulls are very low maintenance. NAUTILUS is not a harbour gin palace. She has bumps and scratches from adventure sailing. If you want a glossy, white, polished Yacht please look elsewhere. The current owner is a highly experienced professional Yacht/Tall ship skipper with 40 years sailing experience. Recent passages include North of Scotland to Spain and Spain to Amsterdam. Please note; NAUTILUS still requires dagger boards to be installed. We have a quote £5,000 each for new boards to be made by a professional marine aluminium fabricator. She can sail well, even reasonably upwind, without the boards. And, of course, downwind dagger boards are not needed at all. Currently berthed in Amsterdam. UK flag and UK VAT paid. LWL 14.6m Beam 7.3m. Draft (rudders up) 0.4m. Air draft 21m Weight unloaded 6.5 tonnes. Loaded <7.5 tonnes. Hull and Decks Constructed 2010 to 2015 (launch date). During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing". looks nicely finished off and looks like it would be good to in and .

I do not have any experience in sailing cats apart from a short on a Prout 37 with our friends.

The vessel looks fast and talking to the owner performs well in heavy . My wife and I are looking at starting our sailing end of 2010.

Interested to hearing views.

Thanks
Kicha

section here - or finding a dedicated discussion place for multis or in fact both. I am going to look at that boat for a friend overseas in a couple of weeks when it gets in from . I have sailed a few of these (and similar Easton and Kerr cats) and they all seem good sail - some better finished than others.

Boat: Multihulls - cats and Tris
. Over 15 there are a whole heap of insane that you start to have to comply with.

Australian Aluminium Cats -

Peter Kerr (Lizard Yachts) started with his lizard of Oz. He and his lived on board and sailed and cruised for years. He went on to design and build a whole heap of aluminium . Really nice guy. Peter is still active in the field and is in Tin Can Bay in .

Owen Easton also lived and sailed his own boats and is still building bare shells in in Qld. I haven't met Owen but people who have suggest he too is a nice guy.

Tim Mumby - met him briefly once, about 5 years ago he designed and was involved in the build of a number of 48 foot cats - called the Cyber. As far as I know he has been busily circumnavigating for the last few years. There was (is?) a link to another baot in with the early Cybers - may still be - a guy called Wayne Hill, Wayne's web site has some data on the first boats - but it appears that he is looking to build the design in Composite rather than aluminium now.

select the windspeed 48

Crowthers (mainly in the era after Loch - I think) also designed a number of cruising cats in aluminium.

I really like aluminium boats - two big disadvantages - anti-foul - not known for its performance and - dissimilar metals - you need to be vigilant about ensure they dont get together.

Reputedly the Cyber boats all perform very very well and appear to have good cruising load carrying capability.

(there is in my view a clear lineage from Lizard of oz in terms of shape - but thats not a matter I think I need to explore here.)

As I indicated earlier - a friend overseas has asked me to have a look at the Cyber thats currently on the market - I look forward to that.

boats end up looking home built on the inside. The only sticking question is keeping the aluminum hull isolated from stray , but with proper design that is addressable. I'd like to find a that has built one to discuss . Anyone know one.

, we are from West side of Auz but working in UAE at present. At end of our we plan to take off once we get use to the boat where ever we by the boat. Trim looks good and so we are very interested in finding out more.

What are the new for vessels over 15 meters? Not that we are looking at going bigger.

Broker's Comments

This spacious and versatile performance aluminium catamaran is fully equipped for charter or cruising and is still capable of winning regattas. Dagger boards give her good windward performance whilst still allowing her to anchor in the best spots, closest to the beach, whilst the twin Kubota diesel engines allow her to cruise economically at 7 Knots.

Superyacht Portfolio

Echo Yachts is perhaps best known for delivering the award-winning 84m trimaran superyacht, White Rabbit. Delivered in 2018, the 2940GT White Rabbit re-imagined the possibilities of superyachts in terms of power/fuel efficiency, performance, comfort, and use of space. The Sam Sorgiovanni designed superyacht boats a striking and elegant profile, with an innovative diesel-electric engineering platform developed by Echo Yachts in collaboration with One2Three Naval Architects. White Rabbit is proof that no superyacht project is too ambitious for the team at Echo Yachts, and that the creation of your dream yacht can be handled from design, through build, to delivery at Echo Yachts.

M/Y White Rabbit features palatial interior accommodation and entertaining spaces and vast exterior dining and sunbathing areas within the enormous 20m vessel beam (width). Large open-plan lounges, dining and bar areas intertwine throughout the Maindeck enabling large-scale functions and gatherings with ease. Spacious and sumptuous Master, VIP and Guest Cabins adorn the Upper, Main and Lower decks. Entertainment zones comprising a dedicated Cinema Room, Karaoke, Piano lounge and Games areas.

M/Y White Rabbit’s tri-hull provides significant powering and fuel efficiency gains <40% better than traditional monohulled superyachts of same GT volume. At 2940GT, 84m long and 20m beam, M/Y White Rabbit delivers optimal seakeeping, stability and passenger comfort. With a top speed of 19 knots and transatlantic range of 5000 nautical miles, White Rabbit ensures significant long-range cruising with ease. Featuring a world-first tri-hull diesel electric propulsion system layout, variable pitch Rolls Royce propellers and Schottel pump-thrusters, M/Y White Rabbit provides optimal propulsion, fuel efficiency and extremely low noise and vibration levels due to the unique positioning and isolation of noise generating equipment possible with the trimaran hull.

51m Catamaran motoryacht M/Y Charley was delivered by Echo Yachts in 2017 and was a finalist in the 2018 World Superyacht Awards. The custom adventure cruiser and fully equipped shadow vessel features Naval Architecture by LoMocean Naval Architects and is proudly engineered by Echo Yachts’ in-house team.

M/Y Charley provides fast, efficient and stable cruising for wreck finding, diving and fishing adventures, plus specialised yacht support functions to M/Y White Rabbit with provision of helipad, large 12m catamaran dive tender, dive rooms, diving de-compression chamber and a plethora of other watercraft. Designed for optimal seakeeping and fuel efficiency, M/Y Charley is the largest vacuum infused composite vessel built in Australia. Robust engineering systems and easy-care hotel interiors are designed specifically for constant low maintenance adventure cruising.

Superyacht Concepts

Monohull : The Echo Yachts range of conventional design solutions boasts thrilling monohull superyachts developed in collaboration with Sorgiovanni Designs. Echo’s EY series includes models EY60, EY70 and EY80, ranging from 60 to 80 metres in length. The superyachts feature abundant luxury amenities and deliver high performance for explorer capabilities. All superyachts in the EY series can be customised or totally re-designed to the client’s exact requirements to guarantee a personal and bespoke-built yacht.

The projects feature exquisite modern styling from internationally acclaimed studios Bannenberg & Rowell and Misha Merzliakhov. Bannenberg & Rowell’s 50m Catamaran Adventure Yacht is a voluminous luxury superyacht that fuses both form and function to create a stable and efficient catamaran hull form for long range cruising. The Misha Merzliakhov-designed 27m Catamaran Pleasure Yacht and Shadow Vessel are ideal options for stand-alone adventure or fast support for a mothership. The unique yachts have incredible amenities and onboard luxury that is more in tune with a much larger category of superyachts, while both can reach impressive top speeds of 25 knots.

Trimaran : The Echo Yachts portfolio of trimaran superyachts ranges from the 38m TSY38 all the way up to the 120m TSY120. Echo has also continued to work on ground-breaking trimaran projects with designer Sam Sorgiovanni, after 84m White Rabbit stunned the world in 2018. TSY105 is a 105m superyacht with resort-like guest areas, along with performance efficiency and stability that would give White Rabbit a run for her money. TSY120 is a larger concept which delivers progressive contemporary styling, advanced hybrid diesel electric propulsion arrangement, with an extremely stable, fast and fuel-efficient trimaran hull including “at speed” ride control and optional “zero speed” Gyro motion control. All Echo Yachts trimaran projects harness the full potential of the platform to offer phenomenal space and comfort onboard.

Looking for information about building a catamaran

Hi guys, So I've recently gotten it in my head that I want to build an aluminum hull catamaran around 40 to 50 feet, with 4 cabins sleeping 8 ppl, to be used mainly for parties with me and a few other couples to and from the gulf coast and Bahamas and possibly light blue water sailing. I have experience in machine shop, auto mechanics and industry mechanics as well as a shop that's large enough to start in; but wont hold the entire ship fully built because I dont gave doors that large. So I feel like the technical part of building a catamaran besides welding aluminum witch I'll have to brush up on, I can handle. My question is. Where do I find good plans? I can find loads of plans but I don't know if any are good, and zero reviews of the catamaran. Also, how are the aluminum welds handled because aluminum dosnt wekd particularly strongly in my experience so I'm a little concerned about that, but the ease if maintaining it us too attractive to turn me off if they claim yo have solved that issue. What are the ballpark numbers we are looking at cost wise? I know it would be cheaper to buy used but I'm also looking for a retirement time sink now that I am retired, but still young enough to work. Like im 36, I need something to do or I'm gonna go crazy. Is there anyone/ a youtuber etc who has built something like a Bruce Roberts eurocat 1300 or a dix 430 that can offer wisdom and real world experience.

Cats have changed with time. They used to be very much performance oriented at the start and have now become floating condos. If too short and too heavy, they will be dogs. Go to Kurt Hughes Multihull Design - Catamarans and Trimarans for Cruising and Charter http://multihulldesigns.com/ Kurt Hughes website/ blog and read it. His philosophy is to build it light and simple. You can email him and he usually responds in a few days. Aluminum is pretty expensive and its too heavy for a performance cat. Pvc foam and high modulus reinforcement are what you should use, not only for the hull, but anything where one might usually use plywood. Or if funds are limited, you use fiberglass and plywood for the hull using Kurt Hughes "Cylinder mold" method. He helps customers in the US build their hulls too, read his blog.

Captain: Umberto Genovese

UMBERTO Born and raised in Sicily in the south of Italy, Umberto has spent a great deal of time around the water. Even as a young child he was passionate about watersports, fishing and outdoor activities. After he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration in Milan, he traveled to Australia to work in hospitality at the famous Sydney Opera House, he also lived in Hong Kong for 4 months while interning for a digital start-up. In 2017 he found himself back in Italy and decided to spend more time on the water and thus started working for The Yacht Week, a popular flotilla company that operates in the Mediterranean but also in other locations like BVI, Martinique and Tahiti. Starting as a Skipper and moving quickly to higher positions such as Lead Skipper and Route Manager. For 2 years he also held the role of Instructor for Quarterdeck, a company that trains and mentors professional skippers. In the 6 years he worked for Quarterdeck and The Yacht Week, he completed more than 80 charters in several locations around the Mediterranean and abroad, covering more than 100,000 nautical miles. When not on the water, he also likes to drive motorbikes. One of his most memorable trips was in India driving through the highest motorable pass in the world at +5.000 meters of altitude. JUDITH Judith was born and raised in The Netherlands. As a child she was always on the water and spent her summers windsurfing as a hobby. Apart from her sporty side, she loves to cook and make people at comfort. She has always been comfortable in the kitchen which led to her study at an international hospitality school in the south of The Netherlands. There she elevated her passion for hospitality to a professional career. She has worked in the hospitality industry from a young age and found herself working at high-end luxury events, such as exclusive wedding venues as well as the Paddock Club of the Grand Prix. Judith has passed the Quarterdeck host academy and has worked for a large flotilla company in the Mediterranean. Her specialties are Mediterranean and Asian cuisines.
