The Elusive History of Comet-Class Sail Racing

Wealth of knowledge awaits discovery in historically black clubs, by ayana bean, nmb curatorial assistant, research | august 6, 2020, reading time: 3 minutes.

*From the archives. This article first appeared in MARITimes 2019 Vol 32

Bermuda has a rich competitive sailing history, with some historic gems tucked away within the minds of living club members and the older generation of those who experienced the heyday of sailing. Last year marked the 75th anniversary of the Edward Cross Comet race, which usually takes place on National Heroes Day (June 17) between the West End Sailboat Club, Mid Atlantic Boat and Sports Club and East End Mini Yacht Club. Although some regattas and clubs have endured, most of the history of sailing clubs and racing is passed down solely through oral history; therefore, it proves difficult when trying to gather data through traditional research methods. As a result, for several weeks I had a unique opportunity to delve into the world of Comet racing and record how it became a part of Bermuda’s story.

The Comet was first named the “Star Junior” after the Star class and was later renamed “Comet” to appease the president of the Star class at the time in America who wished to use the name for short-rigged old Stars. The Comet is a small, fast, and easily manageable boat designed by C. Lowndes Johnson of Easton, MD, in 1932. However, it wasn’t until 1937 that Elliott “Nick” Swan purportedly owned one of the first in Bermuda. About three years later, local craftsmen began building their own Comets. Some of those craftsmen were the forefathers of the Comet class clubs that are still active today.

Elfie Cann, Edward “Jack” Cross, and Ossie Philpott are some of the men instrumental in forming the West End Sailboat Club in 1941. The Somerset men enjoyed sailing and boat building, and, it seems, sport in general as Ossie had been the Somerset Cricket Club treasurer.

Shortly after, in the central part of Bermuda, the Mid-Atlantic Boat & Sports Club was developed in 1944. Early founding members included Elsworth Lovell, Lawrence Hendrickson Sr., and Edward “Gates” Smith. The latter raced until he was well into his seventies and was one of the oldest active members of the Comet class in the 1990s. The youngest club involved in Comet racing is the East End Mini Yacht Club, which started in 1968 and has been located in the same building since its inception. Guy Millett, Alton Millett, and James Wade had their first meeting with five others at Convict Bay, St. George’s.

The Long Distance Race came about at the West End Sailboat Club, which hosted the first race in May 1944. The early route was slightly different, running from Somerset Bridge to St. George’s Harbour instead of between clubs as it does today. The first winner of this race was Canute “Tutor” Lambert, who won in his boat Sea Hawk . The following year, the race was named in honour of Edward “Jack” Cross, who designed and carved the competition’s cedar trophy.

Initially my project was to create a profile on each of the Comet Class Sailing Clubs, but I was encouraged to search and find out more. My thanks to Maxine Esdaille and members of local sailing clubs including Rear Commodore of the West End Sailboat Club, Gladwin Lambert, for sharing their knowledge. There is still more work ahead to develop a more comprehensive account of historically black sailing clubs in Bermuda, which still organise at least 10 regattas a year during the season from April to November.

Watch IslandStats recap of this year’s race held July 30, 2020, including an interview with winners Maxwell Curtis and crew Stefan Furbert:

Innovative approach for offshore classic

Published on June 7th, 2020 by Editor -->

The coronavirus pandemic has not been kind to the competition calendar, and particularly harsh for the longer races that require significant preparation and create lasting memories.

The Chicago Mackinac Race is a recent casualty, the Bayview Mackinac Race is hanging on by a thread, but the biennial Newport Bermuda Race was a crushing blow. However, an innovative concept may keep the dream of alive for those still hoping to ‘Thrash to the Patch’:

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation (BSF), East End Mini Yacht Club (EEMYC), and the Sailing Yacht Research Foundation (SYRF) are organizing the 2020 Spirit of Bermuda Charity Rally, a rally race to Bermuda and back for the benefit of BSF’s programs for youth on the sail training vessel Spirit of Bermuda.

The rally will start on July 6 from two locations in international waters off the US East Coast using an innovative format that brings ocean racing back to this year’s season in a manner that is competitive yet flexible, and fun yet also COVID-safe for both organizers and participants.

east end mini yacht club bermuda

“This is like a breath of fresh air, thank you for putting together this rally,” said Laurent Givry of Annapolis, MD, and owner of the Figaro III La Défonce, who was first to enter the event. “After the lockdown, I am now excited like a 13-year old boy again!”

The Rally introduces a new and innovative format that will have two starting lines set up on lines of latitude and longitude located in the Atlantic Ocean 12 miles south of the coast of Newport, Rhode Island and 20 miles east of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay at Chesapeake Light.

Entries can participate in the Rally to Bermuda (RTB) starting from either location, and finish at Mills Buoy close to the mouth of Town Cut in St George’s, Bermuda.

Participants are then welcome to continue sailing around the island and back to either the North or West Start/Finish Lines in the Rally From Bermuda (RFB) or they are welcome to stop in St George’s Harbour and enjoy Bermuda’s famous hospitality.

The government of Bermuda is expecting to be open to COVID Phase 4 (open with social distancing measures) by mid-July – before departing in the race back to either Newport or the Chesapeake.

The Rally re-start time and destination is up to each participant and will be recorded using YB tracking and will be shown on the website. The Rally Around Bermuda (RAB) will be the combined scores of the two legs. So how can we race on different courses, at different times, in different weather and score together as a single race?

SYRF has synthesized many practices in offshore racing to develop the SYRF Offshore Scoring system, which uses the predicted speed of each yacht (their polars) together with the actual wind observed by global weather models.

Every six hours, the weather services provide a NOWcast of wind conditions worldwide, and these are used to compute the best route (at 100% polar performance efficiency) and the optimum sailing time of each yacht. This optimum time is then divided into the yacht’s recorded sailing time, and the ratio is the yacht’s score.

With this approach, it doesn’t matter what course, what start time, or what weather you race in, SYRF Offshore Scoring measures how efficiently you sail your yacht compared to the optimum route.

“In this way, boats are actually racing against their own potential to perform well in the actual weather available across their race course,” explained Larry Rosenfeld, a noted offshore navigator, the Technical Director on the Board of SYRF and a principal organizer of the Spirit of Bermuda Charity Rally.

“We hope this innovation will open the way to other new formats for offshore racing where yachts may sail different course, times and weather and be scored together. Starting and finishing in offshore locations will also help with the accuracy of this method because it minimizes any land-based weather effects encountered closer inshore.”

“Like many aspects of life in COVID times, it is innovative thinking like this that can help fulfill the excitement and passion that offshore sailors have for going to sea,” said Stan Honey, Chairman of SYRF and world-renowned offshore navigator. “We’re really pleased to have this support from Bermuda to put this bold idea to the test in these challenging times.”

In addition to performance prizes, the yacht and crew that raise the most funds for the Spirit of Bermuda Charity will receive special recognition.

“If all goes according to plan, the Spirit of Bermuda Rally will be the first sports tourism event as Bermuda reopens its tourism economy,” said Glenn Jones, Interim CEO of the Bermuda Tourism Authority. “It’s fitting because sailing has always held a special place in the island’s history and is proving again to be an integral part of our future as well.

“Our organization is grateful to the planners of this rally and the Bermuda government for the quick thinking necessary to bring this nautical tourism event to the island this summer. Sailors returning to our harbours after a short trip from the US East Coast will be a familiar and welcome sight.”

75th Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race

Festivities surrounding the 75th annual Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race will take place from Thursday, June 13 to Monday, June 17, with 16 boats expected to take part in the race itself.

A spokesperson said, “It is with a sense of excitement and at the same time relief that the West End Sailboat Club, originators and organisers of the annual Distance Comet Race, look forward to next Monday, June 17 when Bermuda will celebrate National Heroes Day and the 75th Long Distance Comet Race will take place.

“Although the first Long Distance Race took place on May 20, 1944, the race was subsequently moved to what was the Queen’s Birthday Holiday, and is now National Heroes Days.

“That first race in 1944 had twelve boats in the fleet. This year, the 75th annual Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race has surpassed that number and will host 16 boats. The race will start from West End Sailboat Club [WESC] at 11.00am and travel down the North Shore, ending in St. George’s Harbour at East End Mini Yacht [EEMYC].

“Participants in this year’s race will include last year’s winning skipper, Malcolm Smith, sailing for WESC, in his boat SUMMER , as well as the winningest skipper in the race so far, Stevie Dickinson, from EEMYC, in his boat KITTYHAWK .”

75th Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race June 2019 (2)

“Stevie has won the race 20 times, beginning in 1976 when he won as a sixteen year old in his original boat, SCORPION . He won the race in SCORPION six times before he purchased the KITTYHAWK from Alton Milton, one of the original members of East End Mini Yacht Club. Alton Millet won the Long Distance Race 10 times in the KITTYHAWK from 1955 to 1983 and Stevie Dickinson has won the race 14 times in the KITTYHAWK from 1992 to 2017.

“In addition to the 75th race itself, all three clubs who participate in the race – West End Sailboat Club, Mid Atlantic Boat and Sports Club [MABSC] and East End Mini Yacht Club – are hosting a number of events to celebrate this 75th race.

“The celebrations start off at EEMYC on Thursday, June 13, starting at 6.00pm when there will be an interactive discussion about African Bermudian Maritime History. Bermudians were involved in all aspects of the maritime industry long before the Long Distance Race. In fact, 100 years exactly before the first Long Distance Race in 1944, in early 1844 the first yacht club in Bermuda – the Bermuda Native Yacht was formed by a number of African Bermudians. The focus of the interactive discussion on Thursday will be on history from the Bermuda Native Yacht Club to the Edward Cross Long Distance.

“People are invited to come out and share their families’ stories of Bermudians and the sea.”

75th Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race June 2019 (1)

“On Friday, June 14, the WESC will host a Members Social, when all members of all three clubs, not just the sailors, are invited to WESC to enjoy an evening of music and fun. This is an opportunity for members from all three clubs, who may not know each other, to get together.

“On Saturday, the MABSC will host a Children’s Day from 12.00pm to 5.00pm. Families are invited to come with their children to enjoy bouncy castles, games and food. There is no entry fee and children will be treated to hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks free of charge while adults will be required to purchase their food. The bar will be closed for duration of the event, opening again once the event is over.

“On Sunday there is a very special memorial service at WESC starting at 9.00am. All sailing clubs in Bermuda have been invited to participate and send representatives to this special service which will honour all sailors who have passed. A cod fish breakfast will be on sale after the service.

“Then on Monday there will be the 75th annual Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race starting from WESC at 11.00am ending at EEMYC. In honour of those older members who got the clubs up and running, some of the older members have been asked to participate in the management of this year’s race.

“Mr. Colin Pearman, a long standing member of the WESC will be this year’s official starter of the race. Mr. Pearman participated in the race a number of times in the 1960s. In fact, in the 1964 race, he sailed in his boat, the ORIEL , which he built himself. He indicated that many of the men in that era built and sailed their own Comet boats, not only to participate in the race but to use socially and also for work.

“Mr. Warren Foggo Jr, father of Heath Foggo, of the EEMYC, was another another Comet sailor who built his own boat and also built Comets for others. Mr. Foggo will present the awards at the prize presentation which takes place at EEMYC at the end of the race, around 3.00pm.

“At the completion of the race there will be food, entertainment, music at the EEMYC and all are invited to come down and enjoy the festivities that will take place.

75th Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race June 2019 (3)

“The race organisers would like to thank the various organisation in the community that have supported this year’s race. Caesar’s Pharmacy, who for the third year running will supply the kit for the sailors – the t-shirts and hats in the club colours and their gear bags – and Bermuda Healthcare Services, who for the second year have supplied towels and special water bottles for the sailors, and this year Barritts is supplying water for each of the sailors.

“There was a competition among middle school students to produce the special 75th anniversary Long Distance Race logo and special thanks go to the Bermuda Sloop Foundation who hosted the reception for winners of the competition on board the Spirit of Bermuda. Thanks to Green Light Café provided the refreshments for the reception and to Barritts who also provided drinks on the day. Thanks also to the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs for the event flags that the clubs will be able to use for future Long Distance Races also.

“This year’s race has proved to be an opportunity to bring the clubs and the community together in a very special way as this race honours and celebrates those members of the various clubs who have worked hard to keep this race going for this its 75th year.”

Community clubs benefit from government largesse

east end mini yacht club bermuda

David Burt, the Premier, presented grants totalling almost $400,000 to nine community clubs yesterday.

Three sailboat clubs, Mid Atlantic Boat Club, East End Mini Yacht Club and West End Sailboat Club, were among them as they received funds to assist with essential upgrades to their facilities and for the purchasing of new equipment.

The action is in keeping with the Government’s commitment to supporting the community efforts of local organisations and projects aimed at getting unemployed and underemployed Bermudians back to work.

The awarding of grants to the three sailboat clubs is also in line with the Government’s promise to assist them in their preparation for SailGP next month and to help them with crucial upgrades to assist in their future operations.

Joining the Premier for the cheque presentations were the Ernest Peets, the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Sport, Lawrence Scott, the Minister of Transport, Speaker of the House Dennis Lister and Members of Parliament Lovitta Foggo, Michael Weeks, Kim Swan and Anthony Richardson.

Mid Atlantic Boat Club was presented with a cheque for $50,000 to assist with capital upgrades to its building, including repairs to the rood and storage room.

East End Mini Yacht Club was presented with $50,000 to assist with renovations to its bathrooms, the alarm system and kitchen repairs, while West End Sailboat Club also received $50,000 to assist with building renovations.

Cheques were also presented to the following sports clubs:

• Flatts Victoria Recreation Club, $18,872 to assist with upgrades to its field and public bathrooms

• Paget Lions Club, $23,550 to assist with purchasing new landscaping and maintenance equipment, as well as a new shed to store equipment

• Somerset Cricket Club, $42,000 to assist with upgrades to upper-level flooring of the clubhouse

• Devonshire Recreation Club, $64,000. This is in addition to $36,000 awarded last September, which was used to begin roof and flooring repairs for the clubhouse. These additional funds will help to complete the work

• Harrington Workman’s Club, $50,000. This is in addition to the $50,000 presented last September, used to begin full renovations of the clubhouse

• St. David’s Cricket Club, $50,000. This is in addition to the $50,000 they were awarded in December which they used to upgrade their outdated electrical infrastructure

The Premier said: “In the 2020-21 budget, funding for capital development was set aside for community clubs to assist in the upgrade of their facilities. The Government encouraged clubs to apply and set out what they needed to continue doing essential work in their communities.”

He continued: “We certainly recognise that this has been an incredibly challenging time for our island. Our community and sports clubs have also struggled against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. Even with the adversities that this year has presented, these organisations managed to provide important services to their community.

“We believe it is important to extend our support where possible to these organisations and their programmes. They play an invaluable part in the communities they serve, and these funds will allow them to continue that work.”

Mark Steede, the president of Devonshire Recreation Club, said: “The committee of management of Devonshire Recreation Club, along with our members, would like to thank the Government of Bermuda for their financial assistance from the Capital Projects Fund.

“These funds will do a great deed, helping us with the construction at the club. It will make our dream become a reality to reopening our club in the not so distant future.”

Najee Musson, president of Harrington Workman’s Club, also expressed gratitude on behalf of the club for the funds received from the Government.

“We at Harrington Workman’s Club, also known as Cleveland County, are extremely grateful to the Government of Bermuda for a second grant of $50,000,” he said.

“As you can see when driving through Devil’s Hole, the work that we are undertaking at our club is vast. We are happy to be able to provide members of our community with jobs as we refurbish the meeting hub of our club and our neighbourhood. This money brings a refreshed and upgraded facility closer to reality.”

Céblé Crockwell, the president of St David’s County Cricket Club, said: “St David’s cricket club is extremely grateful for the opportunity afforded to us by this generous grant, which allows us to not only make the much needed improvements to our club but also affords us the opportunity to provide a better, safer, all-inclusive gathering spot for our members, community, and welcomed visitors.

“This grant comes at a time when everyone is struggling and St David’s County Cricket Club is grateful beyond measure for this gift. We thank the Bermuda Government, the Premier and Minister of Finance for their generous consideration of the island’s clubs.”

A total of $714,922 for capital development assistance has been awarded to date, with $68,700 made available from the Confiscated Asset Fund has been awarded thus far to support youth programmes.
