Why You Need a Boat Horn

Should you even bother with all this, why not just shout or use signal lights at other boats?

Well if you ask the American Boating Association , according to their latest edition of navigation rules, vessels greater than 65.6 ft are required to have some form of sound-producing device to be used for signaling.

Recreational boats in particular are meant to have a horn or whistle capable of being heard at least half a mile away.

Legally speaking for most boats, you’re going to need a boat horn.

Not only is it a means of making other vessels become aware of your presence, but certain sets of short and long bursts of your horn can even allow you to inform them of the kind of maneuver that you are undertaking.

Since it also goes both ways, boats that have audible horns help you navigate around them and result in an overall safer and more efficient use of waterways.

Different Types of Boat Horns

To begin with, horns used on land vehicles such as trucks or cars may be used on boats. However, they may have limited range and the humidity will significantly decrease their expected lifetime.

Thus for the purposes of this guide, we’ll only be focusing on marine boat horns solely because this is aimed towards marine vessels, and so marine grade boat horns will be what you will encounter in this guide.

Which One You Should Buy Based on Boat Size

Common suggested types of horns based on boat size will be decided on which category the boat’s size falls into.

There are three main categories:

Small-sized Boats with Lengths Less Than 39.4ft

For this category of boat, they must have either a bell, air horn, or whistle on board for signaling other vessels. A larger horn is acceptable as well, although do consider the increased cost such a horn setup will cost you.

With a vessel as small as these chances are you are going to be grouped up with similarly sized vessels and these audio signaling devices should suffice for most use case scenarios.

Medium-sized Boats with Lengths Between 39.4ft and 65.6ft

Now moving on to slightly larger boats, they should still be equipped with a whistle loud enough to be audible for at least ½ of a nautical mile and a bell with at least 7.87 inches in diameter.

Given these specifications, your horn should roughly be around as loud as these if you want to be able to signal other vessels within your vicinity and the loudness of which would be relatively proportional to the size of the vessel.

Large-sized Boats with Lengths Beyond 65.6ft

Unless these are very specialized boats, chances are these vessels would probably be regarded as ships and will have their own set of rules and regulations well beyond the scope of this article.

With all this said we would still recommend that you consult with your local authorities and regulations as these requirements may vary depending on your location.

What to Consider and Look For When Buying a Boat Horn

Since now you have a general idea of what you would like in a boat horn whether it be air or electric, and approximate size, what other factors should be taken into account when shopping for one?

Sound/Loudness

This is a bit of a difficult question to answer but choose the loudest one that you can afford for your budget. Do expect that a larger vessel will require a louder horn.

Your choices are plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, and chrome finished metals. If possible choose stainless steel followed by aluminum, as these are the most corrosion-resistant materials and are quite durable.

Usually, it should be installed in the front of the vessel, but ideally, it should have no problem being heard in all directions. Thus you shouldn’t place it in a location where it might end up being obstructed.

Ease of Installation

Some may not come included with mounting solutions, and others can just be screwed on the roof of your boat. Also, electric horns tend to be easier to install since they only need wires and a switch.

USCG Requirements

Again consult your local regulations for compliance when choosing an appropriately sized horn for your boat. Regardless of regulations, you will always need some form of the audible signal.

Power Requirements

This is an especially important consideration when it comes to electric horns as not supplying enough power will make it sound weak and inaudible at distance.

As for air horns, take note of the compressor’s power consumption as this will eat up the bulk of your power.

Boat: Finnsailer 38	on my as a replacement for an old horn. Didn't want the trumpets sticking out to catch lines. Nice tone, but not super loud. Probably loud enough for normal situations like opening bridges, letting someone know you are passing, but maybe not for emergencies. I also keep a hand-held air horn in the just in case.

Boat: Morgan OI 413 1973 - Aythya	US cruising horns are almost never heard. I haven't heard a horn used for a bridge opening since about 1980. Almost 99.6% of all passing incounters are covered on the with the comment of a One or two whistle pass, but nobody's out there using a horn. You must have it for compliance and emergengy, but this is best accomplished with an air horn in the can. I'm on my third air horn in the can that has corroded away without use over the last thirty years. No way I'm hard in some device that has no function! Take care and joy, Aythya crew

Boat: Finnsailer 38	(do a lot of that in New England), backing out of a blind slip in a marina, in passing situations where the folks maybe don't have a or aren't paying attention, and alerting someone who's is dragging. Never thought I'd want a hard-wired one, but my came with one on top of the pilothouse and I have found it surprisingly useful at times. It is always right there when you need it--no need to hunt around or change air cans just at the wrong moment. And, I have had to use the horn to wake up a bridge or two that wasn't paying attention, and to summon a locktender who wasn't on the because he was out painting.

Boat: Custom Freya 20m	in some area I guess. Having sailed from Melbourne and now HK, I cannot imagine sailing without a regulation horn. Legalities aside, it just seems to be an essential if sailing in populated areas. I harbour the fond ambition of sailing in in next few years and expect it to be a pre-requisite. Standard Horizon advertise an electronic loud hailer/horn, Marco (Italian Company) do similar range. Really happy to have the manufacturer reference above though - thanks for that.

2020 Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS

In case you haven’t realized, boats are like ice cream. You have to choose your flavor. Some are plain vanilla, some are chocolate, but Cruisers’ new 38 GLS is like the Neapolitan you remember as a kid. It blends the best of all flavors, and it satisfies, no matter what you are craving.

Want to go fast? Think 53 mph. Want to spend the night aboard? There’s a galley, shower and private stateroom. Want wind in your hair? Plant yourself in the bow seating for the ride of a lifetime. Want to just hang out at the local sandbar, splashing in and out of the water? Fold down the beach door that defines this versatile new water toy.

Interior and Accessories

I have no idea what GLS means. Great little ship? Whatever it stands for, it’s quite an amazing bow rider with outboard power, and also the amenities and craftsmanship found on the larger Cruisers Cantius yachts.

This isn’t Cruisers Yachts first foray into outboard-powered dayboats—that was the 338 OB. The 38 GLS proves a whole different vessel. For one thing, it offers the unforgettable beach door that turns a section of the starboard coaming into a fold-down addition to the cockpit, increasing space exponentially while replacing the transom platform lost to the outboards. It brilliantly delivers a great hangout area that’s popular when you’re at a sandbar or playing with water toys.

Cruisers took the concept one step further and—because parents want to keep an eye on their kids—the aft-facing bench backrest swivels to face the “beach,” so parents can do just that.

That takes care of the aft end of the cockpit, and there are still two L-shaped midship dinettes, both with tables, that can handle a mob for munchies from the mini galley. This is equipped with the good stuff, including a grill, sink, fridge and ice maker, but the interesting fillip is putting two bar stools at the forward end of the galley counter. This surprised me because it occupies space usually given to a forward-facing companion seat, but I found the stools very usable. They add two more people to the cockpit entertainment zone and can be used for supervising the beach, and because they tuck into the corner, I was comfortable while the 38 GLS was running.

The skipper gets the best seat in the house, of course, behind the blingy chrome-and-leather tilt wheel facing a black nonreflective dash inlaid with two rows of recessed push buttons for various systems. The joystick and throttle-shifter are exactly where you’d want them, and I liked that you look through the windshield when standing, rather than over it (or at the frame). The varnished nonslip footrest is at the perfect angle, and the seat bolster flips up for standing room if desired.

The portside walkway leads forward (with a closure door for wind and spray protection), and the U-shaped bow seating offers streamlined headrests on the forward-facing lounge. A removable table converts to a sun pad, and I liked the up/down buttons for the anchor windlass on the deck so you don’t have to open the rode locker.

Down below is a surprise to almost rival the beach door: more than 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom. There’s an enclosed head to starboard (6 feet, 2 inches of headroom—wow) with a full shower. The forward settee/dinette is convertible to a berth, but the 38 GLS has a private stateroom tucked under the cockpit with a 6 ½-by-4 ½-foot berth, which is bigger than a double but a couple of inches shy of a queen. That’s more than enough for overnighting and great for secure naps for the kiddies. And a nearby microwave handles morning coffee without leaving the cabin, which is thoughtfully provided with a screen door to eliminate no-see-ums.

Underway, the 38 GLS is fun, with plenty of punch from the standard triple Mercury Verado 300 hp outboards (350 hp Verados are optional), and we easily reached just shy of 53 mph with several people aboard and full fuel. These Mercs give you joystick maneuvering for docking, and they aren’t going to melt your credit card for fuel either.

No big surprises, but the seaworthy hull has two strakes on each side and chine flats to improve stability and throw spray aside. We did doughnuts on Tampa Bay, crossing our wake from every angle, and the 38 GLS maintained perfect poise throughout. The triple Mercs have plenty of punch if you want to yank all manner of water toys, reaching planing speed (25.3 mph) in just 5.5 seconds and flat-out in just 21 seconds.

An option is a 5.5 kW genset to power the air conditioning at anchor and/or the blender for piña coladas at the sandbar. I was surprised that a built-in vacuum is standard, but it makes sense to deal with sandy feet.

If you’re shopping around, take a look at the Sea Ray SLX400 ($708,552). It’s 3 feet longer, but has a similar layout in both the cockpit and cabin, with a beach door.

A sterndrive version of the 38 GLS is coming, mostly to satisfy hardcore out-drivers or freshwater skippers, and I wondered what was under the big compartment aft on the outboard version. Turns out, the entire seating package rises on gas lifts, revealing a cavernous storage area (or perhaps a mother-in-law suite).

The Cruisers 38 GLS is genuinely likable. Whether you prefer chocolate, vanilla or strawberry, this is one tasty treat.
