This place is one of the best kept secrets on the Virginia Peninsula. It has a great club facility, swimming pool, Tennis Courts, Outdoor dining, and a large waterfront with many deep water slips for both power and sail boats. It sits on Deep Creek off the James river and is convenient to great sailing, fishing and many other attractions. For a family with a boat this club offers an incredible value

My husband and I have been members of the club for almost a year. There is always something fun to do and we've met some fantastic couples. We enjoy the large pool and pub during the summer months and have had plenty of special events in the large banquet room. It's a great value and a great place to keep your boat.

New York Yacht Club to Host 2025 Team Racing Worlds

New York Yacht Club to Host 2025 Team Racing Worlds in Sonar Keelboats

Newport, R.I. — The New York Yacht Club, which sparked the keelboat team racing revolution with the creation of the Hinman Masters Team Race in 2000, will see this discipline attain the highest competitive level in the sport when it hosts the World Sailing 2025 Team Race World Championship, May 28 to June 1, at Harbour Court in Newport, R.I.

The first team racing world championship in a decade will be sailed in the Club’s fleet of 23-foot  Sonar keelboats  in a two-on-two format. While not as widespread as the three-on-three format that is used in scholastic and collegiate racing in the United States and elsewhere around the world, the two-on-two format has won a lot of support with its easy-to-understand scoring format—whichever team finishes in last position loses the race—non-stop action and smaller team size.

For more on previous editions of the Team Racing World Championship, click  here .

“When this came forward, when the bid package came out, we said of course we’d want to run this,” says Susan Daly, co-chair of the New York Yacht Club’s Team Racing subcommittee. “It’s a natural fit for us given our history both with keelboat team racing and having run a team race worlds in 2005 in Vanguard 15 dinghies. This world championship is a great way to kick off a packed 2025 regatta calendar at Harbour Court.”

In addition to the Hinman Masters regatta—for which skippers must be 45 or older and crew must be 40 or older—the New York Yacht Club runs three other highly regarded team race events each summer: the Morgan Cup, the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters and the Women’s 2v2. The Club also created the Global Team Race Regatta and hosted it in 2018 and 2022. The Club expertly maintains a fleet of 22 Sonar sailboats that are reserved for team racing and the occasional fleet race regatta. In the four team-race regattas hosted by the New York Yacht Club, spinnakers are used. But the format for the world championship will mandate the jib-and-main-only configuration.  A dozen teams are anticipated, including one from the host New York Yacht Club. The remainder will be qualified through their member national authorities. For United States sailors hoping to compete, a qualifying regatta is anticipated in early 2025. The NOR for the 2025 Team Race World Championship can be found  here . The next edition will be held in August 2026 at the Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap, Stockholm, Sweden, and is supported by the City of Stockholm and the Swedish Sailing Federation.

Teams that meet the eligibility requirements set out in the  Notice of Race  may submit a Request for Invitation by using this  link .

Newport-based American Magic to again represent New York Yacht Club at America's Cup

NEW YORK — Earlier this week, the trustees of the New York Yacht Club approved a challenge for the 37th edition of the America’s Cup, sailing’s most prestigious trophy.

“We are extremely excited to continue our quest to regain the America’s Cup with American Magic,” Paul M. Zabetakis, commodore of the New York Yacht Club, said in a prepared statement. “Upon receiving the Protocol for the 37th match, we were pleased to find that it contains elements advocated for by the club last spring.

"In addition, the executive committee recently received a new proposal from Doug DeVos and Hap Fauth, American Magic principals and Club members, that warranted reconsidering our earlier decision to pause our pursuit of AC37."

Previously: New York Yacht Club pulls out of 37th America's Cup

The New York Yacht Club created the America’s Cup and successfully defended it 25 times before losing the Cup to Australia II and the Royal Perth Yacht Club in Newport in 1983. In the years since, the New York Yacht Club has challenged for the trophy four times. The most recent challenge, represented by American Magic, ended prematurely when the team was knocked out of the Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series in Auckland in January of 2021.

Discussions regarding the club’s next challenge started shortly after Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the Cup last March. However, due to a lack of clarity regarding the rules, timing and venue for the next Match, the club decided in October to pause its America’s Cup efforts.

36th Cup: Portsmouth-based American Magic eliminated from America's Cup competition

A renewed mutual desire to have American Magic sail on behalf of the club and commit to a campaign for at least two consecutive America’s Cup cycles prompted the club and team to join forces for the 37th America’s Cup.

“While the result in Auckland was not what we had hoped for, skipper Terry Hutchinson and the entire team were tremendous ambassadors for the Club and displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the campaign,” Zabetakis said. “The America’s Cup remains the highest peak in sailing and one of the most difficult challenges in the world of sport. The lessons learned during our previous campaign, combined with American Magic’s physical and intellectual assets and a commitment to multiple cycles, will ensure this challenge a strong chance to claim sailing’s ultimate prize.”

While winning remains the primary goal, it’s not the only focal point of the campaign.

“The club’s involvement in AC37 must advance our foundational initiatives, including the development of America’s youth sailing talent and a commitment to increasing diversity within our sport,” Zabetakis said. “We will also continue to push for changes to the structure of the competition that can make the event more accessible to challengers, fans and corporate partners.”

The team and the club eagerly await the announcement within the next few months of the venue and schedule for the 37th America’s Cup.

“We intend to compete in AC37 and are hungry and highly motivated to be the most innovative team on and off the water,” Fauth said in a prepared statement. “We are proud of how our team rebounded during AC36, but we have unfinished business and are committed to investing in technology, design, innovation, and talent so we are best positioned to bring the America’s Cup home!”

New York Yacht Club’s Race Week Welcomes Global Sailing Elite

' src=

In a notable event for the world of sailing, the Rolex TP52 World Championship will grace American waters for only the second time in its 16-year history. This prestigious monohull fleet-racing championship is set to unfold as part of the New York Yacht Club’s Race Week at Newport, presented by Rolex. The 14th edition of this biennial summer classic marks the inaugural regatta under a historic new 10-year agreement between the New York Yacht Club and its long-time partner, Rolex.

“There is no better event to kick off our new partnership agreement with Rolex than Race Week at Newport featuring the Rolex TP52 World Championship,” stated L. Jay Cross, Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. “Rolex’s support has been crucial to our commitment to running world-class regattas. Whether it’s a world championship for a grand-prix fleet like the TP52s, one of our four renowned team races, our Annual Regatta—which celebrated its 170th iteration in June—or any of the other 15 to 20 events we host each summer, we are looking forward to another decade of great competition and unparalleled shoreside hospitality.”

The regatta, held from July 13 to 16 at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., also features other major titles, including the IC37 National Championship and the J/109 North American Championship. Boats racing under the ORC rule will vie for class honors, with many eyeing the upcoming ORC World Championship in early fall. A Rolex timepiece will be awarded to the best overall boat.

Since its inception in 1998, Race Week at Newport has established itself as one of the premier summer race weeks in the Northeast. This year, it benefits from partnerships with presenting sponsor Rolex and regatta sponsors Peters & May, Safe Harbor Marinas, Helly Hansen, and Hammetts Hotel. The event combines superb racing conditions off Newport with the exemplary shoreside hospitality of the Club’s waterfront clubhouse overlooking Newport Harbor.

The IC37 class will see 16 boats competing in its sixth national championship, bolstered by an influx of new teams. Among them, six are making their debut in this event. While Steve Liebel’s New Wave team has dominated, winning three of the last four major championships, the results of the Annual Regatta in June showed that new teams can quickly become competitive.

“Every boat has very good sailors,” remarked Peter McClennen, the 2022 North American Champion and President of the IC37 Class Association. “The boats are perfectly even. There are no advantages in any equipment. The sharing is extreme across the fleet with Class Coach Moose McClintock picking up any new learning of modes and sharing. Nobody has a secret mode.”

In contrast to the IC37’s emphasis on uniformity, the TP52 class encourages design and construction variations, fostering development. Modern TP52s are significantly faster than their early 2000s counterparts. However, a new boat does not guarantee immediate success. Harm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon Aviation team, despite mixed results with their new boat, remains optimistic about their prospects.

“I am very positive,” Müller-Spreer expressed. “We have a real fighting spirit in this Platoon Aviation team. We have been together so long we know what it takes to win, and I very much believe we will be contenders here. It has taken time to get to know this new boat, and in Newport last month, we felt like we were really getting there when we damaged the rudder. But here we are, we are fighters. We are confident, and that is so important in sport, as it will be at these world championships.”

Local attention will undoubtedly focus on the three American-flagged teams: Quantum Racing powered by American Magic, led by Harry Melges IV; Austin Fragomen’s Interlodge; and Takashi Okura’s Sled. Fragomen, Melges, and Okura are all esteemed members of the New York Yacht Club.

Racing for the Rolex TP52 World Championship kicks off on Tuesday, with the remaining participants commencing on Wednesday. Competitions will take place on Rhode Island Sound and Narragansett Bay, concluding with a Rolex Awards Banquet on Saturday evening at the historic Harbour Court property.
