Clubhouse Portage Bay - Seattle, WA

The clubhouse is the home base for a busy schedule of activities. It is also available for rent to members for personal use such as weddings, graduations, etc. Groups of up to 225 can be accommodated.

A major, two million dollar- plus renovation of the Clubhouse was completed recently. The result is the beautiful facility we enjoy today. Perched above our 229-slip moorage, our Clubhouse stands proudly overlooking Portage Bay as a testament to the spirit and dedication of our members. Queen City Yacht Club is debt-free, and self-supporting. Hands-on efforts of volunteer members help maintain the house, docks and grounds.

Eagle Harbor Outstation - Bainbridge Island, WA

Location:  47.37.301N 122.31.115W  Half way in on the north shore of Eagle Harbor. The Eagle Harbor Public Dock is directly to the east and a private residence sits to the west. The end pilings and docks are clearly marked with Queen City signs.

This is the Club's main Outstation and is owned by the Club. The dock is "U" shaped, with 30 amp power and potable water throughout. From May 15th to September 15th of every year, Members can tie up on either side of both fingers on a first come - first served basis;  Dock A is the western finger and Dock B is the eastern finger.  Rafting up to three deep is allowed / encouraged during busy periods (i.e. Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day weekends).

During the "winter" months of September 15th thru May 15th, visiting moorage is limited to the outside of both fingers as the inside area (the inside of the "U") becomes seasonal long term moorage for Members.

Deer Harbor Outstation - Orcas Island, WA

Location:  48.37.191N 123.00.162W  (Southwest corner of Orcas Island) This is the first commercial marina as one enters the harbor, and is located on the east side.

QCYC use area defined : The QCYC contracted dock space is identified by the yellow highlight bar in the picture and by the QCYC identification affixed to the  west side only  of that floating dock. The entire east side of that float and the "dog leg" part of the west side are normal marina transient moorage and subject to the marina's overnight fee.  No reservation is necessary as this is a first come - first served tie up. 30 amp power and potable water is available dockside. Rafting is allowed up to three deep. 

Dock Street Marina, Tacoma WA

Location:  47.14.729N  122.26.004W   The Marina is at the very southwest end of the Thea Foss Waterway in Tacoma WA. It sits on the side near the WA State History Museum. Look for the large red building, which was a train station.

QCYC use area defined:  This is a  reservation-required  Outstation and Members are strongly encouraged to phone (253) 572-2524 or email as far in advance as possible. Prior to reaching the dock, contact the Marina by phone or on VHF 78A for slip assignment. There is 125 and 250 volt power, water, and cable TV on the docks, with garbage and showers nearby and slip-side pumpouts available.  

Mill Bay Marina, Mill Bay, BC

Location:  48.39.206N 123.32.743W  in the northwest corner of Saanich Inlet

QCYC use area defined:  This is a  reservation-required  Outstation and Members are strongly encouraged to phone (250) 743-4303 or email as far in advance as possible. Prior to reaching the dock, contact the Marina by phone or on VHF 66A for slip assignment. There is 30 and 50 amp power, water, and WiFi on the docks, with garbage, laundry, and showers nearby.  

Port Browning Marina, Pender Island, BC

Location:  48.46.546N 123.16.319W, at the head of Port Browning Harbour.

QCYC use area defined:  This is a  reservation-required  Outstation and Members are strongly encouraged to phone  (250) 629-3493 , or email as far in advance as possible. Prior to reaching the dock, contact the Marina by phone or on VHF 66A for slip assignment. There is 30 and 50 amp power, WiFi, with laundry and shower facilities available.The marina has completed the remodel, however, as of July 2019, there is no fresh water service available on the docks. Plan accordingly. Members are ask to notify the web team should the fresh water situation change.

Port Sidney Marina, Sidney, BC

Location:  48.39.182N  123.23.502W  The Marina is located on the northwest end of Sidney Channel. It's surrounded by a large rock breakwater, which provides excellent protection. One enters thru a channel on the south end of the breakwater and once in the harbor area, you will find a Canada Customs clearing station immediately on the left.

QCYC use area defined:  This is a  reservation-required  Outstation and Members are strongly encouraged to phone (250) 655-3711 or email as far in advance as possible. Prior to reaching the dock, hail the "Port Sidney Harbormaster" on VHF 66A for actual slip assignment. There is 30 and 50 amp power, water, and WiFi on the docks, with laundry and shower facilities on site.

Bremerton Yacht Club is is now accepting applications for new members with no limitations on where they live. The club has created a limited moorage membership for $500, vs the normal $1,500. Your boat must be able to fit into a shallow slip and moorage is paid for a year. Boaters will enjoy having their boat on the water vs. in the backyard. A junior membership, also $500, is available to those 35 and younger. The club has 200 slips and offers many advantages for the hands-on boater: a haul-out, one ton crane, a shop, gas and diesel. BYC has an out-station on Anderson Island and over a 100 reciprocal clubs as well as secure parking and 24/7 access. Day Island Yacht Club is welcoming new members with a shared love of being on the water. We are an active club with something happening every week – boating raft-ups, day trips, overnight trips, dances, crabbing, whale watching, potlucks, pig roasts, parties and more.

You are welcome even if you don’t have a boat or previous boating experience. For Skippers, our members can assist with boat handling and racing as well as simply socializing. In our club we have a mix of power and sail boat owners.

Every month we host a dance that features local bands or deejays. Featured dances include Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Christmas and an annual Commodore’s Ball. The club also co-sponsors the Goosebumps Race Series, hosts an Opening Day cocktail party on Dock Zero, and raises money for the Northwest Harvest food bank.

The cost to join SSYC is reasonable because we don’t maintain a clubhouse. Casual members pay $10 per weekly meeting, and Annual Members pay $150 per year. Qualifying skippers (those who take members out on the water) pay no membership fees.

If you like Yacht Club cruises but are tired of being on long waiting lists, our club is just for you.  We have 10 cruises every summer one we have traditionally done for the Holidays.  Our cruises are fun and engaging with an emphasis on relaxing activities and group gatherings. 

Our socials are done all year round and include wine tasting, BBQ classes, theme inspired parties, dances, entertainment and fun holiday get togethers.  

Working in conjunction with our partners at America's Boating Club of Seattle, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Sea Scouts, our club is focused on safe and knowledgeable boating; holding yearly seminars on boater skills/safety.

Started in 1954 on the Northern Shore of Lake Union, Puget Sound Yacht Club was started as a cruising club, with most destinations being in Puget Sound and Canada.  Today, we continue that tradition along with being known as a "Family" yacht club geared towards comradery through fun and engaging social events, boater education and outreach towards many of the area's yacht club and boating clubs/organizations.

Founded in 1947, Rainier Yacht Club today is a thriving organization with fun members, a beautiful clubhouse and access to many reciprocal clubs. We are located on scenic South Lake Washington at Parkshore Marina.  We have a very active yachting club with many cruises, events and just plain FUN!

Seattle Yacht Club

Many Seattle Yacht Club members cruise the waters of the Pacific Northwest in powerboats.  Whether touring the Club’s 10 Outstations, located from Gig Harbor in the south to Cortes Bay in the north, or exploring the fresh water lakes, our members tend to enjoy their time on the water. SYC has a number of interesting and exciting events for members with powerboats. These include formal events with fun interactive themes, local and long-range cruises from Puget Sound to the Canadian Gulf Islands, and monthly dinners with exciting and informative speakers. Our monthly club dinners include topics about boating in the Northwest and adventures from around the world. These dinner are also a fun way to meet with fellow Club members and share boating experiences.

Seattle Yacht Club also hosts Navigational Rallies (aka Predicted Log Racing) around Puget Sound. These navigational contests are a great opportunity for members to improve their knowledge of their boat and skills of predicting the boat’s performance around a designated course.

SYC is recognized among the leading yacht clubs of the world with a renowned comprehensive junior sailing program, in which the Junior Race Team is an integral part.  Our Junior Race Team draws upon a broad base of young sailors (open to the public) primarily from the SYC Summer Sailing School, SYC’s Northwest Interscholastic High School Sailing Team (HS Sailing), and community outreach programs.  The SYC Junior Race Team and HS Sailing provide youths, from ages 8 to 18, the opportunity to reach for competitive success at all levels while developing athletic skills, leadership, sportsmanship and a lifelong love for boating.  SYC has given rise to numerous generations of successful Pacific Northwest sailors, including multiple Olympic champions.  The SYC Race Team continues the Club’s legacy of achievement, representing SYC in local, regional, national and international competitions.

Cameron has been the SYC Jr Race Team coach since 2011. Originally from Upstate NY, Cam has lived on both coasts, but has come to call the NW home.

Cam has been a sailing coach for the better part of 20 years. He has worked for various yacht clubs and sailing programs in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Seattle. 

The SYC Jr Race Team does most of its year-round training on Shilshole Bay (Puget Sound), however Cam and the team travel all over the country competing in over 25 regattas every year. A busy training and regatta schedule is what makes the SYC Jr sailors the best in the North West!

The team has found lots of success under Coach Cam with SYC sailors winning national championships, qualifying for international regattas, and dominating the NW Youth Racing Circuit. It’s exciting and fun to work with such committed, talented, and hard working Jr sailors representing the club. 

2017 was a big year for the team and the sailing department! They were honored to receive the Captain Joe Prosser Award, from US Sailing, for excellence in sailing instruction. The Jr sailors list of accomplishments is far too long to list here, so please stop Cam in the hallway or on the dock to hear about it all! Or join them at the SYC Jr sailing awards held every January, to meet the team, celebrate an amazing year, and help them kick off the successful season ahead. Go SYC!

Seattle Yacht Club welcomes applications for membership from Northwest boaters ages 10+ who would like to join our active community.

Members of the Club are entitled to use our Portage Bay Clubhouse with casual and fine dining restaurants, banquet and meeting facilities, guest moorage, and permanent moorage (subject to availability).  Members are also encouraged to participate in a wide range of regattas and cruises, and enjoy activities and dining events at the Club.  Membership with SYC offers use of our Elliott Bay clubhouse facilities and discounted Elliott Bay moorage (subject to availability), use of nine Outstations (listed below), and reciprocal privileges to more than 225 other yacht clubs around the world.

Several levels of membership are available based on the age and marital status of the candidate.  For an individual membership, the initiation fee is determined by the age of the new member on the date the application is completed.  Monthly dues adjust throughout the life of a membership as it advances from one class to another.  We encourage married couples to apply for joint membership.  There is one initiation fee, which is determined by the age of the older spouse on the date the application is completed.  The monthly dues are determined using the birthdate of the older spouse.  To request a chart of the current fees and dues, contact SYC's Membership Director.

Each membership application needs one primary sponsor and three other members to serve as recommenders (all must be voting or Surviving members of SYC).  The application process begins when a voting member of SYC checks out an application packet and becomes the applicant’s sponsor.

Seattle welcomes world’s best sailors for J/24 international championship

An armada of racing sailboats is a common enough sight on a Seattle summer evening, but the boats heading out from Shilshole Bay Marina in Ballard from Sept. 28 to Oct. 5 aren’t just part of a run-of-the-mill casual race. For the first time, Seattle will host the J/24 World Championship , drawing 56 teams from 11 countries who will test their mettle against the shifty winds and tricky currents of Puget Sound.

Just as crucially, the sailing teams will also test their mettle against each other as they sail north from Shilshole Bay. The 24-foot-long boat is known worldwide for creating a level playing field because boats must be identical to compete. No team has an advantage because of a souped-up sailboat, which means some of the world’s most skilled sailors — former Olympians are known to frequent the J/24 racing circuit — are heading for our local saltwater.

Since 1979, the world championships have cycled through many of the world’s great sailing venues — Annapolis, Md.; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Malmö, Sweden; Sardinia, Italy — except the Emerald City.

And yet, “we have a fleet that is the envy of many other racing communities around the U.S. and the world,” said defending J/24 World champion Keith Whittemore.

Whittemore is a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, which will host the regatta with support from the Port of Seattle. The club is no stranger to competition, with sailboats crossing the starting line over 1,000 times annually under the club’s auspices. While our region’s 30-odd J/24 owners race most Tuesday nights on Lake Washington, this event is of a different caliber.

“In terms of international prestige, this is definitely the pinnacle — the biggest event this club has ever hosted,” said regatta chair Jonathan Anderson from the clubhouse inside Shilshole Bay Marina as sailors prepared for the Western Regionals , a regatta that served as a warm-up for the world championship.

The upcoming championship is part of a growing portfolio of international sailing competitions lured to the Port of Seattle. The latest to drop anchor in town: the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race , which pulled into Elliott Bay for a multiday stopover in May.

If you missed that spectator event, then grab some binoculars and a beach blanket for the J/24 World Championship. After a few days of boat measurements, orientation and practice, the action heats up with up to a dozen races daily from Oct. 1-5. Expect sailboats running neck-and-neck at full tilt with billowing sails. If the weather gods cooperate, this sporting tableau will be set against the brilliant backdrop of the Olympic Mountains, which should prove plenty impressive to skippers hailing from five continents.

NASCAR of sailboats  

Newport, R.I.-based sailboat-maker Rod Johnstone invented the J/24 in the 1970s. It became popular in the “one-design” racing world, in which every boat must be the same down to the weight and the shape of the keel and rudder. That way, the only potential difference between boats are the sails themselves, whereby a newer sail not yet battered by the elements may capture wind more efficiently. There’s also an 882-pound maximum weight for race crews, a rule that results in gender parity — a crew could consist of three heavier men, or five lighter women, with more hands on deck creating a competitive advantage.

The result is something like a NASCAR race, in which the car bodies are identical and modifications are not allowed. That equalizer makes J/24 racing attractive for sailors who can keep up, even into their later years.

“I would sail a piece of plywood if everybody had the same piece of plywood,” said Whittemore, 68, via phone from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, where he was competing in the J/70 World Championship. “You go different speeds not because the boats are different but because the sailors are different. It really tests the sailors’ skills.”

Whittemore won last year’s J/24 World Championship in Thessaloniki, Greece and the 2019 edition in Miami, as well as most other national J/24 titles at least once since his first world championship competition in 1982. He will not be competing in his home city’s race so he can assist the club with organization and logistics drawn from his decades of international competition.

“The boat can be handled on a world-class level with five friends,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be five guys who spend every morning in the gym.”

The J/24’s accessibility is not just age-related. With about 6,000 boats in circulation, they can be purchased for as little as $5,000, though $10,000-$15,000 is more typical for used ones in good condition. If split between a crew of five people, that is relatively affordable for a racing sailboat. (A coveted early 20th-century J Class yacht , by comparison, can be priced in the millions.) Crucially, J/24s are small enough for owners to tow them by trailer to different regattas around the country.

That portability is part of the appeal for Montana retail operations manager Ginjer Yachechak, 39, who races J/24s on Flathead Lake and brings them to larger competitions, like the Western Regionals tuneup in early September. Yachechak was quite literally raised on J/24s — as an infant, her sailing-obsessed parents would strap her into a bouncy chair aboard their sailboat while they raced.

She grew into the hobby and by her teenage years was already coming to Washington to face stiffer competition since the Seattle J/24 fleet is the closest one to Montana. In her 20s, she spent four winters working in a sail loft in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, so she could sail year-round, and later worked for a yacht delivery company to keep burnishing her sailing chops.

Yachechak will be skippering an all-women crew for the World Championship that has been racing together for the last year and a half. Four of them hold day jobs in fields like nursing, realty and environmental consulting, but they spend their weekends during sailing season pursuing their hobby — even if it means driving nine hours from Montana to Seattle towing a sailboat.

“It’s one of those bucket list things with my crew,” she said after her boat, Queen’s Gambit, was lowered by crane into the water ahead of race day at the pre-World Championship tuneup. “We’re not trying to win. It’s all about competing with the best people out there. Every time we race against someone better we learn something and we get better ourselves.”

Shifty course

The top-notch facilities at Shilshole Bay Marina like cranes for raising and lowering boats, ample moorage to accommodate a large visiting fleet, and the Corinthian clubhouse as a race headquarters are not Seattle’s only draw. The 3-mile round-trip course will entice sailors who must contend with Puget Sound’s quirks.

“It’s a challenge for the teams, because you could be in a river of current going with you, and you’ve got a speed advantage on somebody just 100 yards to your left,” explained Anderson, the regatta chair.

Winds switch direction, pick up or die down on a whim. Tidal shifts create intense currents. Landforms from the Olympic Mountains far to the west to Discovery Park just to the south can influence how wind behaves in ways that have taken local sailors years to master.

Those hard-to-predict subtleties motivated some sailors to show up early and familiarize themselves with the course, like Graham Kirby, of West Vancouver, B.C.

“I’ve done races here where I’ve come in second and second-to-last,” he said, pausing from last-minute maintenance on his boat, the Blurrrr, along with his team of two sons and one grandson. “It’s all over the map.”

Kirby and his family visiting from just over the border to scope out the course are the closest international competitors, but there will be others in town for the championship from as far as Argentina, Greece and Japan who will have a chance to see what defending world champion Whittemore has been telling competitors as he travels the globe.

“Seattle is a marvelous sailing venue,” he said. “It is time to show that off.”
