viking princess yacht reviews

Viking Sport Cruisers Princess 50

“Stop the presses!” I always wanted to shout this phrase, although now that computers and electronic wizardry have shanghaied the printing process, it’s more like “please gently remove your finger from the send button.”

What’s the breaking news? Viking Sport Cruisers, built in Plymouth, England, by Princess Yachts, is now going to be carrying the name of the builder. So, what was the Viking 50 Sport Cruisers a few days before this writing is now the Princess 50. The move is purely an effort to build a more global, less-fragmented brand structure by Princess’s parent company, luxury-goods powerhouse LVMH (owners of Louis Vuitton, De Beers, and the Feadship Yacht brand, among others).

What’s this going to mean to the boater looking for the well-designed, sound performance cruiser for family adventures previously offered by Viking Sport Cruisers? Well, not a whole hell of a lot. As with all of her sisterships, Princess incorporates design and equipment direction from Viking Sport Cruisers, now the distributor for Princess in the Americas.

I still maintain that the concept of importing Princess models into the Americas under the Viking Sport Cruisers moniker 15 years ago, and ensuring they would satisfy the demands of the New Jersey builder, was brilliant business. Had the boats simply arrived on these shores, as is, with zero changes and relatively unknown, they would have been about as welcome as Tony Hayward at a Bayou crawfish boil. Have other European builders tried this? Sure, and some have been successful, others not so much.

However, the Viking Sport Cruisers philosophy went beyond the initial sale, and zeroed in on the after-sales process. They were able to capitalize on an impressive dealer network that already serviced the fishing-oriented Viking Yachts. They ensured that equipment used on each model could be easily serviced in North and South America. And some design tweaks were incorporated to reflect how boats are actually used on this side of the Atlantic. “The major change is the name on the side of the boat,” explains James Nobel, marketing director for Viking Sport Cruisers. “The hull identification number will remain VSC [Viking Sport Cruisers] and we’re still focused on Princess, with a Viking difference.”

So, American boaters, meet the Princess 50—the latest generation of this model. Compared to the previous 50, this is an entirely new hull, and the interior benefits from a 15-foot, 3-inch beam. To really appreciate the interior design, volume, and clever touches of the 50, you need to place it in context. Even consider comparing it to the previous 50, and it is patently obvious that areas such as the master stateroom have leapfrogged the design evolution process. The master stateroom spans the full beam, and features six large hullside windows, allowing streams of light and air into the master stateroom.

“The market was really demanding a full-beam stateroom,” commented Nobel, as we toured the boat in Plymouth. Yet, to carry it off correctly on a 50-footer is usually tough, and you often end up with a space better suited as a nursery than as one for two adults.

Two additional staterooms are forward. The forepeak guest stateroom is equal to what was the master stateroom on the previous 50, and shares a head with the starboard, twin-bunk stateroom. The well-equipped galley is to port on this level, offset from the passageway. Loads of stowage and cleverly designed drawers will hold provisions for extended cruises.

viking princess yacht reviews

A few steps above, the double helm station is an area that I believe Princess has perfected. The line of sight, even while cruising along at 25 knots and banking into turns, is flawless. The analog gauges are easily viewed—no neck-twisting necessary. Our test boat was equipped with a Furuno NavNet 3D chart plotter and radar combo on the inboard side of the helm station. When extra vigilance is required, such as running in fog or at night, this arrangement works really well. The mate can push the buttons and navigate, while giving the helmsman direction. And again, because the line of sight is unobscured, running at night from the station is an easy option. The engine controls, bow thruster stick, and necessary breakers are all perfectly placed for a natural orientation.

There is a dinette opposite the helm station. I like having a designated “dining” area and a designated “lounge” area. If you cruise with kids or grandkids, you know that meal times are often staggered. Without this setup, chances are you’re prematurely converting the saloon into a mess hall for mac and cheese and chicken nuggets, while the adults are still trying to relax. Because of the large windshield, it’s also a good perch for your guests to sit and watch the action if the captain chooses to operate the 50 from the lower station.

A U-shaped settee runs the length of the starboard side in the saloon, with a banquet and f latscreen TV opposite. In the saloon, as in the rest of the interior, the joinery is flawlessly executed and finished. Princess offers several choices of wood, depending upon your taste.

Another noticeable improvement over the previous 50 is in the engineroom. Some key service points on the earlier model required a gymnastics routine to access. Not so on the latest version. There is sufficient room around the twin 670-horsepower Volvo D11 diesels for routine service, with access from a deck hatch.

The deep-V hull with 19-degree transom deadrise produced a ride that I’ve come to expect from Princess. The 50 greeted the three-foot chop, mixed in with a larger swell f lowing in from the English Channel, with a mocking laugh. There was no protest from the hull structure when we met the seas at a top speed of 32 knots. Her running attitude was at approximately five degrees, which just added to the aforementioned flawless line of sight from the lower station. Optional 715-horsepower Cat diesels are offered, giving a top speed of 32.4 knots—as well as a few more knots and a few more miles of range when comparing engine load data in the 80- to 90-percent range.

The flying bridge helm is to port, and when backing down, the helmsman can easily see astern by looking through the staircase opening and transom door. There’s a drink fridge and barbecue abaft the helm, and a settee with a table along the starboard side. Tender stowage is relegated to the large swim platform, which is preferable in my opinion.

Anchor retrieval is made safer with a horizontal deck platform and a grippy non-skid around the windlass.

Princess Yachts offers models ranging from 42 to 130 feet. The yard’s hightech, 38-acre facility is continuing to build high-quality boats that are constantly evolving as technology and market preferences evolve. The new 50 is a sound example of this equation. Combine this with the dedication and expertise of Viking Sport Cruisers, along with their strong dealer network, and you may find yourself humming the same line I have while writing this review: “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” If you’re looking to create some family adventures, the Viking… err…Princess 50 is ready for the task.

Princess Yachts Reviews

Princess Yachts logo

The story began on Newport Street in Plymouth in 1965. It was here that ex-Naval officer David King and two friends started a company called Marine Projects.

Their first model, which was named Project 31 , was built on the hull of a Senior 31 and fitted out in a rented shed. This historic yacht was restored in 2015 as part of the yard’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

From such humble beginnings, Marine Projects made huge advances over the following years. This led to the 1969 launch of the Princess 32 – the first model to bear the name.

The 1970s saw Princess branch out into the burgeoning flybridge market with the Princess 37 V Hull. Designed by John Bennett and launched at the London Boat Show, this model was fitted with high performance inboard diesel engines.

Six years later the company began work on the Princess 30DS with a promising young designer called Bernard Olesinski. His name has since become a byword for the deep-vee hull. 1981 saw a buyout of the company, with South African businessman Graham J Beck taking the helm – he would remain the majority shareholder for the next 27 years.

In 1984 the launch of the Princess 286 Riviera cemented this company’s status in the high-speed sports cruiser market. Its twin 270hp Volvo AQ271/DP engines gave a top speed of more than 30 knots. Just a year later, the company followed up this success with the launch of the Princess 45, which was the largest production yacht in the UK – and there was clearly an appetite for larger yachts, as more than 400 hulls produced over the next nine years.

Export and expansion

The V-Class range was rolled out in 1994 with the arrival of the Princess V39 , which in its latest guise is still one of the company’s best sellers more than 20 years later. A 1995 tie-up with Viking Yachts of Gretna, New Jersey saw Princess break into the American market.

The 1990s also saw the yard move into a new purpose-built headquarters, still on Newport Street, as well as acquiring a new site in nearby Coypool.

But wasn’t until 2001 that the company was officially renamed as Princess Yachts International, with production split over three sites in Devonport, Plympton and Lee Mill. This year also saw the launch of Princess’s first M Class superyacht, the Princess 25M.

And in 2008 a buyout by L Capital allowed further expansion, taking the Princess range over the 100ft mark for the first time. This led to another new site – South Yard was leased from the Ministry of Defence for the development of the M Class range in 2009 and Princess was granted the lease for the premises two years later.

The yard is rightly proud of its environmental record, which was underlined in 2011 when Princess became the first British yard to achieve RINA Green Plus (Y) notation for its entire range. More recently, Princess teamed up with the Marine Conservation Society to launch a 2016 book called Enid & Her Magic Yacht, which aims to spread the environmental message to the next generation of seafarers.

Today the Princess Yachts collection ranges from the entry-level V39 sportscruiser to the 131ft tri-deck Princess 40M superyacht . Its yachts are built in a state-of-the-art facility, which spans more than 100,000 square metres. With more than 3,000 staff on its books, Princess Yachts is one of the biggest employers in Plymouth, but also operates in 118 other countries across the world.

Had a group of 13 and we all absolutely loved the experience. The boat itself was super spacious and just as nice as what you see in the photos. Brian was super accommodating and very clear and prompt with his communications. He showed us an amazing time around Lake Union and Lake Washington. Will definitely be booking another ride next summer

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie. Thinking of purchasing flybridge in the 50's range(new). Any recommendations? It doesn't have to be from above choices. I would appreciate the reason for your choice. Thank you very much.

A few questions for clarification, my 50s range do you mean feet or dollars. If you mean feet what is your approximate budget, it helps to make any recommendations. I asked that questions a few years ago and found out quickly just because I knew what I meant didn't mean the people I was asking did, so clarify and provide as much information as possible. There are people on here that are very well qualified to advise you if you give them the information they need.

Also - Will you be operating the yacht yourself sometimes? Or always with crew at the helm? Kelly Cook

Geography may play a part in the answer. "Earth" as a location is fine and good, but a tad more specificity may help in an intelligent response. An example: Owning a French built automobile may not be a bad idea if you live in France. Otherwise, perhaps not so much.
SeaEric is correct about geography especially for power requirements. Not trying to scare just a lot to consider when asking for recommendations for a yacht.
I meant feet and as for budget, about 3 million US dollars, but hopefully I can keep it under 2 million. I'll be operating the yacht myself most of the time. I was considering Azimut 55 Evolution, or Azimut 58. Any suggestions or recommendations?
If yachts from both America and Europe are accessible to you, then that really opens up a wide range of yachts! Just for style, I'm more comfortable with the flybridge models by UK and US brands. But that is purely a personal view, different strokes for different folks. And, just to keep the record balanced, I love the Italian sport (open) yachts. Fun topic! Here is a link to another thread that may help - Opinions on flybridge yachts 50 feet Kelly
Thanks for the information Kelly, very useful.

Hi welcome aboard Are you going to keep the boat in Japanese waters? The Regs are very specific for personal yacht ownership under the Rising Sun flag. Please think about off-shore registration. Dave
Thanks for the welcome FISHTIGUA. When you say specific, do you mean strict? What do you suggest

Thanks for the info TK-F430, I will go check out the yacht if I get a chance. I did check out all three yachts couple of days ago. I think I'm going to scratch out Marquis from the choice. Between Azimut 58 and Princess 58, both new, anybody have any suggestions/comments? I hardly see any thread about Princess yachts. Does that mean its not too popular in US?

lwrandall

lwrandall senior member

Princess Yachts are not sold in the US. Princess Yachts are sold under the name Viking Sport Cruisers(do a search for that), which are "Americanized" versions of Princess Yachts. This means they use more US made parts and accesories. Also, they are about 25% HIGHER in price than their Princess counterparts. Why you may ask? The buyer has to pay for three sets of profit margins. Princess's profit then Viking's profit then the dealer profit.

Azimut Hello, I have been researching for a yacht in similar length but with a different style. What I write is surely personal preference, but Azimut seems a better choice than a Princess. The interior seems more pleasant. In terms of owning a flybridge though, I always thought that compared to its length, there is too much weight aloft. This is an opinion, I remind you. These motor-yachts roll heavily sometimes. I hope the professionals who participate in this forum can extrapolate a through comparison for the brands you consider. Could you specify as to the location where the yacht would be moored and the locations you intend to sail? Taking your budget into consideration, would you like to try a fresh design with a naval architect to suit your needs? Good luck in your purchase Regards vivariva

Although Azimuts are very attractively designed, Princess build quality could be a thick better. Fairline definitely better in build quality and Ferretti should be at par with Fairline. All these boats are planing boats, so their stabilty is obtained through the fast movement of the hull in the water. If the seas are high, then it may not be comfortable and at times dangerous to keep a planing speed, then because of the hull design (flat bottom), the boat will roll heavily. For stability at high seas one should consider displacement or semi-displacement boats backed by stabilizers.

Hi, you can consider exactly what do you need. Italian boats have more space in the interior because of the not so V hull and they have plenty of space, on the other hand English boats such as Princess or Sunseeker(which i would prefer Sunseeker instead of Princess) have deep V hull that means less space in the interior but much better way acting on waves, but i believe that deeper V hull yachts have more fuel consumption. May i make some suggestions about yachts? well i say : Azimuth 55E, Manhattan 52 Sunseeker, Uniesse MY 53. But whatever you want to choose. Dont put the standar engines that they offer. choose engine that are suitable for the yacht so you wont have any problems about pressurize the engines if you are loaded. watch that please.

I understand about back pressure on the exhaust, the pressure in the engine cylinders, but I don't understand what you mean by this statement. Please explain for me, thanks.
