EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BATMAN ROLEX WATCH

Now that we've covered everything you need to know about the GMT Master II , we'd like to draw your  attention to one GMT Master II in particular, often referred to as the Rolex Batman. Released after the  famous “Pepsi”, one of the most famous to date. Among Rolex products, the Rolex GMT Batman is a  model that has made its way to become iconic and reflects Rolex's watchmaking excellence.  Launched in 2013, this watch has quickly become a classic thanks to its singular design marked by a  black dial and black and blue bezel. If it's so named, it's not because it was worn on the wrist of the  superhero. It takes its name from the color combination often associated with Gotham's masked  vigilante. The Batman has established itself as one of Rolex's most popular watch models.

The first Cerachrom ceramic bezel is introduced for the first time on the pink gold Daytona ref.116515.  To create a two-tone bezel, another patented process involves applying black coloring to a porous blue  ceramic bezel. It is through innovation that Rolex has become a guarantee of quality and exceptional  craftsmanship, and the essential brand we know today.  Mounted on an Oyster bracelet with three flat links, designed to be robust and durable, the Rolex GMT  Batman features a caliber 3186 automatic movement, offering Rolex customers a 50-hour power  reserve.

One of the remarkable aspects of the Rolex GMT Master II Batman is its luminescent display, designed to offer optimum legibility even in the darkest conditions. Thanks to the Chromalight technology developed by Rolex in 2008, the watch's hands and indexes emit an intense blue glow in the dark. Unlike other luminescent coatings, which lose their intensity after a few hours, Chromalight guarantees brightness for up to eight hours. This feature is particularly appreciated by customers (night travelers or pilots) who need to consult their watch in low-light environments.

As of 2019, six years later, Rolex presents the new version of the GMT Master Batman, ref.126710BLNR, also known as the “Batgirl”. A true little sister to the first edition, the Batgirl is aesthetically distinguished from the Batman. While it retains the emblematic black and blue color duo, it is distinguished by its bracelet.

The Batgirl moves from a Oyster three-link steel  bracelet to a Jubilee bracelet, which is a five-link steel bracelet designed to offer a more elegant and  sophisticated look, making it suitable for formal events as well as more everyday use. The Jubilee  bracelet is also equipped with an Easylink extension, enabling the length to be adjusted by around  5mm. Finally, it also features an Oysterlock clasp for a safe and secure closure.

In addition to this aesthetic change, the Batgirl also incorporates technical improvements. It is  equipped with the automatic caliber 3285, a more recent movement offering an extended power  reserve of 70 hours, compared with 50 hours for the Batman's caliber 3186. The new movement also  boasts greater resistance to shocks and magnetic fields thanks to the use of the Parachrom  balance-spring, an innovation developed by Rolex to improve the reliability and longevity of watches.

Rolex's strategy is partly based on this orchestrated rarity, creating a certain buzz around each model.  The production of the two-tone ceramic bezel is particularly complex, which partly explains this  limitation. This technique requires great precision and advanced technical skills, making it one of the  watch's most admired features, but also one of the most difficult to reproduce in large quantities. The  success of the Rolex Batman has also contributed to its reputation on the second-hand market.

Indeed, the secondary market for Rolex watches is booming, and the Rolex Batman occupies a prime  position. It's not uncommon to see pre owned models selling for much higher prices than new, due to  scarcity and high demand. This dynamic creates a certain amount of speculation, making the Rolex

Batman not only an object of desire but also a potentially lucrative investment for which some don't  hesitate to pay the price. At the time of the GMT Master II Batman's release, its retail price was  around €10,000. In 2024, market prices for a Rolex GMT Batman full set watch in very good condition  are between €18,000 and €20,000.

Key Features of the Rolex Batman

  • Dual Time Zone: Displays two time zones simultaneously with an additional blue 24-hour hand and a rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel.
  • Cerachrom Bezel: The two-tone black and blue Cerachrom bezel is virtually scratch-proof and resistant to fading, maintaining its vibrant appearance over time. The Rolex Batman was Rolex's first two-tone colour Cerachrom bezel (reflecting the difficult of working with the material).
  • Material Options: Available in Oystersteel, ensuring durability and corrosion resistance.
  • Sizes: Exclusively offered in 40mm, the size provides a perfect balance between wrist presence and comfort, suiting both men and women.
  • Dial: The black dial features large hour markers and hands filled with Chromalight for exceptional legibility in any lighting conditions.
  • Bracelet: The Oyster bracelet defines the Rolex GMT Batman variant, offering comfort, durability, and a secure fit with the Oysterlock safety clasp.
  • Movement: Powered by the Rolex Caliber 3285, an automatic movement with a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, and featuring a Parachrom hairspring for increased precision and resistance to shocks and temperature variations.

Is The New Rolex Batman A Better Buy Than The Old One?

The Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 126710BLNR Batman made its debut at Baselworld 2019. It is not a new watch as such. Rather, it supersedes the popular but now-discontinued Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 116710BLNR Batman. Boasting several key updates, the Ref 126710BLNR is technically superior to its predecessor. But not everyone is happy about the way the new model looks. And speculation on the impact restricted supply will have on pricing is already rife. That seems fair, given what happened with the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 126710BLRO Pepsi last year. So, is the new Rolex Batman a better buy than the old one? Read on to find out.

A (Very) Brief History Of The Rolex Batman

When the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 116710BLNR Batman dropped at Baselworld in 2013, people took notice. This was the first Rolex watch to feature a bi-color ceramic bezel. That’s despite the fact that Rolex introduced cerachrom bezels to the GMT-Master II (Ref 116718LN) 8 years earlier in 2005. Ceramic is a tricky material to work with though. That’s why Rolex had always said it was impossible to make a bi-color bezel in ceramic. Until they did it, of course.

For collectors, this is significant for a number of reasons. There’s the obvious fact that it is the first watch to showcase this technical development. More importantly though, a bi-colour bezel was a fundamental design aspect of the original GMT-Master. Rolex developed the watch in the 1950’s in response to Pan-American Airways’ request for a watch that could display more than one time zone (for transatlantic flights). Its most distinguishing visual feature was the two-tone colour scheme, blue and red, which marked daytime from nighttime hours. Check out this Rolex GMT-Master Ref 1675 from 1963 to see what I’m talking about.

Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 116710BLNR Batman

Unlike the original Pepsi, though, the ceramic bezel of the Ref 116710BLNR is blue and black (BLNR stands for bleu/noir). It doesn’t take much imagination than to see where the Batman nickname comes from. Same goes for the Rolex Submariner 116610 LV Hulk . This was surprising at the time, as there had never been a blue and black bezel in the collection before. Now, of course, it’s difficult to imagine the GMT-Master II line-up without one.

For several years, the Ref 116710BLNR was the only steel Rolex GMT-Master II with a bi-colour bezel. That’s because in 2014, Rolex decided to make the Pepsi GMT-Master II available exclusively in 18k white gold. This made it less accessible but also in some ways less authentic. After all, everyone knows a proper tool watch comes in steel. The flip-side to this of course is that it paved the way for the Batman to establish a cult following of its own. That’s why getting your hands on one through the proper authorised channels generally requires months of waiting.

Now the original Batman has been superseded by the new Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 126710BLNR. Does that mean it’s the better watch to buy?

The Ref 116710BLNR vs The Ref 126710BLNR

Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 126710BLNR ‘Batman’

To the casual observer, the Ref 116710BLNR and Ref 126710BLNR look virtually identical. The most obvious difference is the bracelet. The original Batman is worn on an Oyster bracelet, like the majority of the brand’s tool watches. Think the Rolex Daytona or the Rolex Deepsea . You get the idea. The new version, however, comes on the equally well-made but decidedly more mature 5-link Jubilee bracelet. In keeping with the sport watch theme, the bracelet is now fitted with a solid folding buckle with Oysterlock and 5mm Easylink extension.

According to Rolex, it’s not possible to switch between the two bracelet types. This is because the lugs have been redesigned specifically for the new end links of the Jubilee bracelet. This has been the source of some contention as many people prefer their tool watches with an Oyster bracelet. That’s not to say the Jubilee bracelet is in any way inferior. It’s not. Rather, it is more usually found on the brand’s dress watches, like the Datejust 41 .

Update Mar ’21: The Oyster is back! As part of its 2021 novelties, Rolex brought back the Oyster bracelet as an option on the Ref 126710BLNR. As is typical with Rolex there was little fanfare or explanation for this decision. This doesn’t replace the Jubilee bracelet option. Instead it gives would-be owners the choice between the two. With the Oyster option being a smidge cheaper. This is sure to make a lot of people very happy. Although those who already own a coveted first-generation Batman on Oyster may be less so. Then again, there are other reasons that model is desirable. As we will see below.

Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 126710BLNR Batman

The case remains the same as before. 40mm in diameter and 12.5mm thick. The blue and black bi-colour ceramic bezel is unchanged, as is the black dial. This means a blue GMT hand, maxi-indexes and hands and a date window magnified by a cyclops at 3 o’clock. If you look closely, you will also notice a small crown logo between “Swiss” and “Made” at the bottom of the dial. That’s because the Ref 126710BLNR is fitted with a new generation Rolex movement.

The calibre 3285 offers a more efficient escapement and gear train and a new variable-inertia balance wheel. It also delivers an improved power reserve. The previous calibre 3186 found in the Ref 116710BLNR offered 50 hours when fully wound. The new calibre ups that to 70 hours. The movement is certified Superlative Chronometer and comes with a 5-year warranty.

The changes to the new Batman are part of a larger effort by Rolex to bring more cohesion to the GMT-Master II collection. As of 2019, all models in the collection must have a bi-colour ceramic bezel. And all models will be equipped with the new generation calibre 3285. As a result, four references have been discontinued with immediate effect. This is good news for Rolex lovers but could also have some influence over which Batman you buy.

Rolex-GMT-Master-II-Batman-126710BLNR-Jubilee-Bracelet-2019

Which Should You Buy?

On paper, the new Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 126710BLNR Batman is technically superior to its predecessor. Better movement, slimmer lugs and a more refined look overall. And now with the option of an Oyster bracelet it really does seem like the clear choice. But, as always there are caveats to that.

It’s no secret that Rolex has been lagging on increasing the supply of its in-demand steel sports watches. Whether this is a deliberate strategy or due to genuine production constraints is subject to debate. There has been speculation that streamlining the collection will enable Rolex to increase production. There seems to be some anecdotal evidence to support this but not enough to suggest Rolex has made great strides in this area. Add to that the impact of Covid on production and global logistics and it seems you could be waiting a long time to get your watch from an AD.

There’s also the option of buying on the secondary market. Prices for the Ref 126710BLNR have come down somewhat from their peak in 2019. But they’re still well over double retail. Somewhere in the vicinity of US$20,000 . And you can expect to pay an extra premium for an Oyster bracelet as there are so few on the market at the moment.

Rolex GMT-Master II Ref 116710BLNR Batman

On the other hand, we can say with certainty that production of the Ref 116710BLNR is capped. As a result, prices on the secondary market are more stable now. Although still growing steadily following a significant upward trajectory in mid-2019.

The original Batman is still a popular watch and probably always will be. It was the first watch from Rolex to have a bi-colour ceramic bezel. It was also the first to have a blue and black bezel. And it was only in production for around 5 years. That means low volumes on the secondary market. Plus, a lot of people prefer the original case with Oyster bracelet.

So, if you’re a collector/investor who wants to own a bit of Rolex history, I would say the Ref 116710BLNR is the watch for you. If you’re a watch lover who wants the latest and greatest from Rolex, then the Ref 126710BLNR is the obvious choice. Of course, if you’re not already a VIP at your nearest authorised Rolex retailer, you might be in for quite a wait.

You are wrong. The new Batman has a thinner case than the old Batman.

Where can I purchase a new Rolex GMT Master II for $9900?

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

I love my 116710BLNR which i was lucky enough to purchase back in 2014. When I went to view it along side the all back ceramic model I knew that there was just something special about this one. Firstly with it being a first for Rolex in the Bi-color on a ceramic bezel and the black and blue colors. Secondly because I was travelling alot I needed a GMT watch so it just fit the bill perfectly for me and what an inspired choice it turned out to be aswell. My dream Rolex is a 2016 Daytona (panda dial) but even one came up on the market I still wouldnt trade my Batman in for one.

Such a great article! Thank you for taking the time to write it. I have had the privilege of owning both watches (the “116710BLNR” Batman and “126710BLNR” Batgirl… still not 100% sure why the newer model got this nickname) and I have to honestly say I am a MUCH bigger fan of the newer “Batgirl”. I love the look of this watch and the blue/black bi-color ceramic bezel on the less scratch-prone jubilee band is just stunning. I have worn it with jeans and a tuxedo – the watch is truly versatile!

Anyways, keep up the great work and even though I am a watch professional with over 20 years of experience, I learned A TON by reading your article.

Very very interesting article.. I love my BATMAN even more after purchasing it for 10K , four years ago. 50% increase on the secondary market is great news.. But even if held its own price I would be extremely happy Not a big fan of the jubilee bracelet On the 2019 model And again I’m glad ROLEX does not sell just bracelets because there would be a lot FRANKIN WATCHES on the secondary market

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

With the new jubilee bracelet, it should be called the “Batgirl.”

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

Now that Rolex has brought back the Oytser bracelet on the 126710BLNR, it looks like prices on the Mk. 1 “Batman” are going to continue rising…possibly for a very long time to come. Rolex is not producing more steel models. In fact, they are making even FEWER now and have focused their business on catching up to the holy trinity. Which means more precious metal, like gold and platinum; steel pieces will be reserved for those high spending, longtime VIP customers. The rest of the world can just deal with it. The ref. 116710LN/116710BLNR is the ONLY ceramic bezel sport model in steel to feature the MK. 1 Super case…the original Super case. The one with the aggressive, masculine lines. The one everybody fell in love with in the very beginning. No, I am going to disagree. There is a clear winner here but there are two categories: 116710 wins for appearance, historical significance & collectability but the 126710 wins for movement, power reserve, and “modernity,” I suppose (a trait rarely sought after in haute horologic circles)

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

You can’t buy an interesting Rolex at anywhere near reasonable value.

So what does it matter anyway?

Shady AD are asking $15 to $25k for this watch.

More prestigious brands and better watches at that price range.

Steel Rolex for 15k USD. No thanks.

Guide to the Rolex GMT-Master II Batman

The Watch Club by SwissWatchExpo

The Rolex GMT-Master II Batman is one of the most well-loved sports watches, not just within the Rolex catalog, but in the watch industry. The Oystersteel construction and now iconic black and blue ceramic bezel proved to be versatile and enduring – and with recent upgrades, it garnered even more appreciation within the watch community.

Let’s take a closer look at the history of the Rolex Batman, and the different editions available. <> <>

Introducing the Rolex Batman

The split-color bezel of the Rolex GMT-Master series has been its signature trait since it launched in 1954. Created to aid pilots, the GMT-Master’s bezel helps indicate a second timezone and daytime and nighttime hours through its bi-colored bezel.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

The famous bezel has been crafted in Bakelite and anodized aluminum since then, and with the introduction of the Cerachrom ceramic insert in 2005, it was inevitable for the GMT-Master II to follow. However, Rolex admitted that it would be challenging to use a single Cerachrom block for their bi-colored bezel. For the next eight years, Rolex worked on perfecting the method of using a single piece of Cerachrom with two different but crisp colors.

In 2013, Rolex was finally ready to introduce it to the public, and it came in the form of reference 116710 BLNR – now known as the Rolex Batman .

The Rolex Batman's bi-colored ceramic bezel was the first of its kind. (photo: Rolex)

It sent the watch world abuzz. Not only was it the first ceramic bezel watch to be made in clean, two-tone colorway, it also came in a handsome black and blue combination. At the time, it was also the only bi-color GMT-Master II model available in stainless steel. The guests at Baselworld 2013 knew that Rolex had just launched a classic.

What’s in name?

Rolex watches are famous for having nicknames, and anyone who’s into watches would certainly know what a Pepsi, Root Beer, or Kermit is. While none of these are in the official Rolex literature, they are used fondly by collectors and they certainly make it easier to discuss watches.

The “BLNR” in the Batman’s official name is a suffix for bleu / noir or blue / black in English . Rolex uses suffixes for their watches in order to help identify the watch from its name alone. These come from French words because as a Geneva-based company, it is the official language of Rolex.

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Bezel (photo: Rolex)

It’s also these bold colors that gave it it’s “Batman” nickname. Batman, of course, is a DC Comics superhero who is famous for being vigilante by night. The Rolex Batman is also sometimes called “Bruiser” or “The Dark Knight” by some fans as a homage to the character.

Now let’s go to the different generations of Rolex Batman watches that have been released, and what they each offer.

First Edition: Rolex GMT-Master II Batman 116710 BLNR (2013 – 2018)

The original Rolex Batman 116710BLNR is most easily distinguished by its blue-black bezel, but it has other defining elements.

It follows the modern GMT-Master II 116710 introduced in 2007, which equipped the watches with features like the then new Caliber 3186 movement with a smoother operating hand, 50-hour power reserve, instant date and COSC certification. The watches still measure 40mm, and have 100m water resistance like previous GMT-Master II models, but it’s improved Triplock screw-down crown offers a more robust shield versus water damage and dust.

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman 116710BLNR

It also featured a “Maxi Dial” with larger hands and markers than the aluminum bezel editions. The Rolex Batman had the distinction of featuring a blue GMT hand, while other GMT-Master II models had a red hand.

Finally, the Rolex Batman came with a three-link Oyster bracelet with satin outer links and polished center links. The Oyster completes the sporty, ruggedly handsome look of the Batman.

The original Rolex Batman 116710BLNR had a short but remarkable five-year run, and in 2019 Rolex decided that it was time for an upgrade.

Second Edition: Rolex GMT-Master II Batman 126710 BLNR Jubilee ( 2019 – present)

In 2018, Rolex re-introduced the Jubilee bracelet to the GMT-Master II line with the reference 126710BLRO Pepsi. It marked the first appearance of the Jubilee in the collection since the 1980s. A five-link Oystersteel Jubilee bracelet was especially designed for this generation of GMT-Master II watches, complete with an Oysterlock safety clasp that prevents accidental opening.

Fans suspected that the Rolex Batman might soon follow, and they were proven correct in 2019. The original ref 116710BLNR was discontinued to make way for the current edition, the ref 126710BLNR. The most obvious change is the Jubilee bracelet which gives the Batman a dressier feel.

A bevy of Rolex Batman and Rolex Pepsi watches

The Rolex Batman Jubilee Bracelet edition also comes with a more svelte profile on the wrist. While the case diameter remains 40mm, the lugs were made thinner and less angled, to make way for a more fluid appearance.

Beyond these aesthetic changes, the most remarkable improvement is the new Caliber 3285 movement that powers the timepiece. Equipped with the brand’s proprietary Chronergy escapement, the Caliber 3285 conforms to the brand’s Superlative Chronometer accuracy standard of just -/+ 2 seconds per day, and offers an improved power reserve of 70 hours.

While the ref 126710BLNR was well-loved, many fans of the original Rolex Batman also voiced out their preference for the Oyster bracelet. It is said that the sporty look of the Batman is best enhanced with the robust three-link design.

Third Edition: Rolex GMT-Master II Batman 126710 BLNR Oyster ( 2021 – present)

In 2021, Rolex silently brought back the Oyster bracelet to the current editions of the Rolex GMT-Master Pepsi and Batman. Since its hiatus in 2018, the classic three-link stainless steel bracelet was added as an option along with the Jubilee bracelet.

Rolex brought back the Oyster bracelet to the Rolex Batman in 2021. (photo: Rolex)

This also means that for the first time ever, the Rolex Batman comes with both the Oyster bracelet and the new generation Caliber 3285 beating inside. All in all, it brings together the iconic aesthetic of the original Rolex Batman with fundamental gains in terms of precision, power reserve, and resistance to shocks.

<> Rolex Batman vs Rolex Batgirl

When examining the Rolex GMT-Master II models colloquially known as the “Batman” and the “Batgirl,” you’ll find an intriguing comparison of two luxury timepieces that, while similar at a glance, reveal certain distinctions.

Each model is named affectionately after iconic DC characters for their distinctive black and blue bezels and their iconic GMT function with the arrow-tipped hand. Both watches are protected by 904L Oystersteel and a sapphire crystal. Similar looks and similar appeal when the largest differences are around the wrist and under the hood. Don’t let the name “Batgirl” fool you, both watches are perfect for men or women. <>

Rolex GMT-Master II Batgirl 126710 vs Batman 116710

Case Profile

The Rolex GMT-Master II series has seen various case designs over the years, each subtly tweaked to fit the brand’s evolving aesthetic and ergonomic standards. The Batman and Batgirl models, while both featuring a 40mm Oystersteel case, encapsulate these design philosophies through their execution of the case profile.

The Batman ref 116710, with its “Super Case,” is noted for its more pronounced, angular lugs and a generally more robust presence on the wrist. This design choice aligns with Rolex’s trend towards making watches that, while not larger in diameter, appear more substantial due to the broader lugs and case sides.

Conversely, the Batgirl ref 126710 introduced a return to more traditional Rolex proportions, with tapered lugs that slenderize the case profile, making it appear less bulky and more in line with the classic Rolex silhouette. This change reflects a subtlety in design evolution, offering an alternative for those who prefer a sleeker aesthetic without compromising on the iconic 40mm size.

It’s important to note that the Oyster bracelet was reintroduced with the new Batman ref 126710 in 2021, so fans can enjoy both the tapered case profile with the sporty Oyster bracelet. <> <>

Rolex GMT-Master II Batgirl 126710 vs Batman 116710

Rolex dials are a study in meticulous craftsmanship and design continuity. A seemingly minor but significant update between the Batman and Batgirl models is found in the text at the 6 o’clock position on the dial. Initially, Rolex watches bore the “Swiss Made” mark, a testament to their quality and origin. However, with the Batgirl model, Rolex introduced a small, yet distinctive coronet symbol nestled between “Swiss” and “Made.”

This subtle addition marks a delineation in production timelines, distinguishing newer models like the Batgirl with an updated brand signature. It reflects Rolex’s attention to detail and its commitment to evolving its watches’ aesthetic, albeit subtly, to incorporate modern branding elements. <> <>

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel Watches - Pepsi, Batman, and Batgirl

Bracelet and Clasp

A significant differentiator between the Batman and Batgirl models lies in their bracelets. The Batman was initially presented with Rolex’s Oyster bracelet, known for its durability and a sportier look that aligns with the tool-watch heritage of the GMT-Master II line.

The Batgirl marked a departure by featuring the Jubilee bracelet, which was traditionally associated with more dress-oriented models like the Datejust. This choice endowed the Batgirl with a more refined appearance, blending the robust functionality of the GMT-Master II with a touch of elegance. The Jubilee bracelet is celebrated for its comfort and sophisticated design, featuring five-piece links that offer a more flexible fit on the wrist.

Moreover, the introduction of the Batgirl model coincided with the debut of the updated Rolex clasp, which includes the Easylink comfort extension system. This system allows the wearer to quickly adjust the bracelet size by approximately 5mm, catering to comfort during varying conditions, such as temperature fluctuations that can cause the wrist to expand or contract. <> <>

Rolex Caliber 3285 Movement

Movement and Power Reserve

At the heart of the distinction between the Batman and Batgirl models is the advancement in movement technology. The Batman is powered by the Calibre 3186, a movement revered for its reliability and precision. It features a 48-hour power reserve, a hallmark of its era, providing ample autonomy for the wearer.

The Batgirl, on the other hand, showcases Rolex’s continued innovation in watchmaking with the introduction of the Calibre 3285. This newer movement not only offers an improved power reserve of up to 70 hours but also incorporates Rolex’s Chronergy escapement. The Chronergy escapement enhances the movement’s efficiency and reliability, representing Rolex’s forward-thinking approach to its mechanical prowess.

The transition from the Calibre 3186 to the 3285 underscores Rolex’s dedication to improving the functional aspects of its watches, ensuring that models like the Batgirl not only keep pace with aesthetic and ergonomic expectations but set new benchmarks in mechanical performance.

To date, Rolex has made three versions of the Rolex GMT-Master II Batman :

GMT-Master II ref 116710BLNR with Oyster Bracelet, powered by Caliber 3186

GMT-Master II ref 126710BLNR with Jubilee Bracelet, powered by Caliber 3285

GMT-Master II ref 126710BLNR with Oyster Bracelet, powered by Caliber 3186

The Rolex GMT-Master II Batman turned a decade old in 2023. While it has a relatively short history, it has definitely made its mark in the industry and reserved itself a place in every watch collector’s wish list. Explore our collection of Rolex Batman watches at SwissWatchExpo.com . <>

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Watch Review

By Nina Scally Updated February 22, 2024

Check out my review of the famous Rolex GMT-Master II Batman!

The Rolex GMT Master II has a legendary status in the watch-collecting world. It’s also a solid investment. But these weren’t the only reasons why I chose to bring the Rolex Batman into my collection.

Sure, the watch has a striking aesthetic and a catchy name, but there is far more to this GMT watch than meets the eye.

Here’s my review of the GMT-Master II Batman and why I love it so much.

Table of Contents

Let’s Talk About Rolex Nicknames

When it comes to nicknames for Rolex watches , there are a lot more of them than you think. Only the most collectible of Rolex watches deserve a nickname.

You may have heard of monikers like “The Paul Newman Daytona” and the “Pepsi GMT”. These names, however, exist nowhere in the brand’s official catalog. They are names that beloved Rolex fans have given them over time.

It was the Submariner ref 6538 that gave Rolex’s iconic dive watch the “ James Bond ” nickname. Likewise, the Submariner 5523 model from the 1960s is responsible for the “Bart Simpson” name.

There are also a couple of green interpretations that have acquired their term of affection from avid collectors.

Take the Rolex “Hulk”, for example, adorned with a striking green ceramic bezel. Its instantly recognizable green hue is understandably reminiscent of the fictional Marvel character.

The Submariner Kermit depicts the all-green Jim Henson puppet through a 50th-anniversary Submariner special. The watch was lovingly given its name after the popular green Sesame Street character thanks to its green ceramic bezel insert.

(Below: Rolex Kermit)

My Rolex’s nickname, however, takes the name of the courageous and stealth-like Marvel character Batman. It adopts the same blue and black colors as the superhero with its Cerachrom bezel. Rolex has flirted with the color blue on several occasions.

The inconspicuous “Blueberry” is an example of such, as well as the “Bluesy” model. The former was fitted with an all-blue bezel, while the latter features a blue dial with a matching blue bezel.

There’s also the “Pepsi” GMT-Master and Master II models. Vintage and modern models alike have been acquitted with this name thanks to their blue and red bezels.

A Bit of Background on the Rolex GMT-Master II “Batman”

Gotham City’s most famous vigilante is represented in the alluring black and blue bezel of the GMT-Master II 126710BLNR watch . It makes for a particularly attractive version of the travel companion.

Any Rolex fan would agree that its unmistakable aesthetic is highly sought-after on the pre-owned market. Devoted collectors will pay a high price to add a Batman to their collection, and you can’t blame them.

The original Batman reference 116710BLNR was first introduced in 2014 and ran in production for five years. As is usually the case for a Rolex watch, once production ceased, prices shot through the roof.

Almost immediately after its retirement, the GMT-Master II ref 126710BLNR was launched. It was nearly identical to its predecessor aside from its modified movement and Jubilee bracelet.

Swapping the original Oyster bracelet for the dressier five-link Jubilee bracelet gave the watch its lesser-known ‘Batgirl” name. It would seem that fans can’t resist a befitting pet name for their beloved Rolex timepieces.

Both the original 116710BLNR and the 126710BLNR fetch good prices on the pre-owned market. These are considered good value propositions.

As recently as 2022, the original GMT-Master was fetching prices of around $22k. The Jubilee bracelet version has demanded an investment price of $26.5k in the past.

How the value of the Batman will fluctuate from year to year remains to be seen. That said, the watch is set to hold its value well, at the very least.

The Evolution of the Batman Watch

If you’re a bit of a Rolex nerd like me, you’ll already know that the GMT-Master has been around for some time. The watch was first created in 1955 at the request of Pan Am Airlines.

Designed to stave off the undesirable effects of jet lag experienced by pilots, it proved a great success. To do so, the brand borrowed the rotating bezel from its Turn-O-Graph design.

Rolex added a 24-hour scale to the rotating bezel, along with an additional hour hand.

Unfortunately, the two-hour hands were connected, meaning that they couldn’t be set separately.

Then, in 1983, Rolex remedied this with the GMT-Master II. Its thicker and wider case gained it the less flattering nickname, the “Fat Lady”. The uncoupled hands, however, were a bonus.

What Drew Me to the Rolex GMT-Master “Batman”?

I travel a lot. When I pack for a trip, I never forget my GMT-Master II.

In most cases, the items I take with me on my trips are either chosen for practicality or style alone. The Rolex Batman, however, is just about the only thing I do pack that covers both.

It’s stylish, comfortable and practical. Plus, it can go from business class to the boardroom seamlessly. It’s all down to a spec list packed with go-anywhere, do-anything features.

A Versatile Design

Initially, when I went in search of adding a Rolex GMT watch to my collection, I considered the “ Pepsi ”. Albeit a more expensive alternative, it’s also a touch flashier.

Choosing between the two is a personal preference, but for me, the “Batman” swayed me. Why? Because the modest blue and black color scheme is more to my taste.

The two-tone bezel surrounding a rich black dial is a match made in heaven. It also lends itself to a very versatile design. I can dress this watch with pretty much every outfit in my wardrobe. It never looks out of place.

I tend to wear black jeans a lot, and for this, the Rolex Batman is the perfect accompaniment. A blue or black jacket also pairs well with the watch.

Likewise, professional attire seems to look awesome with the GMT-Master II. In part, this is down to the bracelet. It’s another winning feature for me.

The Jubilee Bracelet

Originally fitted on the Oyster bracelet until 2019, the Batman shared this same feature with the Submariner. That said, the central links were polished, unlike the Submariner’s satin-brushed middle links. It made the GMT-Master feel dressier.

Then, when the GMT-Master II came along, the decision to fit it with the Jubilee bracelet elevated it even further. The bracelet also benefits from the brand’s patented Easylink comfort extension feature.

I find the feature particularly handy during times when my wrist has swollen under warm temperatures or after heavy meals. I can make a seamless adjustment to the bracelet length in these situations and get an instant snug fit.

If, like me, you find the clasp is constantly in contact with hard surfaces, there are ways to preserve it. Having researched the market, I have found several trustworthy aftermarket sellers that produce clear plastic protectors.

Simply fit one of these to your clasp, and you don’t need to worry about it scratching up.

A Unisex Fit

Attire-wise, I’m pleased to say there are a couple of things my wife and I share. The GMT-Master II Batman is one of those few.

It looks so good on her that it almost feels a little unfair. Despite the appeal it has on a male audience, a respectable 40mm size serves it well on a woman’s wrist, too. I’m pretty sure this is yet another reason why the watch appeals to the masses on such a universal level.

It’s a Talking Point

Wherever I go, people notice this watch. I can see why even the most socially awkward of people will take a chance on the GMT-Master II. It’s a bold statement, but it’s also a great ice-breaker.

Whether I match this watch with casual weekend attire or pair it with a suit, the compliments pour in. I like compliments.

The Key Features of the Rolex GMT-Master II Watch

There is a lot to be said for a functional tool that looks as timeless as the Rolex Batman. Here are a few key features I love about how the watch looks and feels.

The dial is beautifully proportioned and well-balanced. It works for me when traveling from one meeting to the next. The hour markers are legible and practical, thanks to being treated with plenty of Chromalight for evening wear.

I can track the passing days of the month in the white date window at 4 o’clock. The date aperture is also dressed under a Cyclops lens for added viability. It’s a signature feature you’ll see across Rolex’s catalog of tool watches.

The Cerachrom material used for the bezel that frames this dial is highly scratch-resistant and keeps its color.

For me, this was an important feature. While many vintage watch collectors prefer a faded bezel for added character, Cerachrom preserves a youthful look.

The bezel turns crisply and cleanly under the fingertips. A satisfying click indicates that it has been aligned with one of the 24-hour locations. It also features the emblematic knurled edge to assist with an easy grip.

The Bracelet

The bracelet of the Rolex GMT-Master II “Batman” is beautifully crafted. It exudes a refined and opulent feel against the wrist.

Although it originally debuted in the Rolex Datejust, it looks more than at home on the GMT-Master II. If I want to dress up, I can rely on the bracelet element to take my outfit to new heights.

The Movement

Housed inside a strong steel case is the Caliber 3285, which replaces the 3186. As a result, it promises an abundance of improvements.

These include better shock resistance, a better power reserve, and better accuracy. Its larger diameter affords a bigger barrel, offering a 70-hour power reserve.

It also comprises the Chronergy escapement and is labeled a Superlative Chronometer. That means that twice the precision of a chronometer-certified movement is guaranteed. With an accuracy of -2 / +2 seconds per day, I know it won’t let me down while I’m on the go.

How To Use the Rolex GMT-Master II “Batman”?

All the hands of the Rolex Batman watch are adjusted using the winding crown. When not setting the time, this feature is screwed in (position 0). For manual winding, it’s a simple job of pulling out to position 1.

Position 2 gives control over the main hour hand. It moves the hand backward and forward in one-hour increments. It doesn’t have a Quickset function, however. Instead, the date needs to be changed by passing the hour hand over the 12 o’clock position.

Position 3 affords control over both hour hands and the minute hand while the second hand is stopped.

When I’m away from home, I use my home time in the 24-hour bezel and the local time on the main dial. When I’m away, and I want to track another time zone for a few hours, I can do this too.

I simply move the bidirectional bezel forward or backward, the correct number of hours difference according to my own home time.

Although it can’t track three time zones at once, it does serve a handy purpose. It’s a great feature to have if I want to switch between two time zones in addition to local time.

Closing Thoughts: You’d Be Hard-Pressed to Find a More Versatile Watch

The Rolex GMT-Master II is a solid-looking, solid-feeling, well-built watch. It’s a daily beater with the added functionality of a GMT complication. For me, it doesn’t matter whether I travel with this watch or not.

Its classic aesthetic and manageable 40mm size are perfect for carrying that bold black and blue bezel. The Rolex “Batman” has an instantly recognizable aesthetic. It will get noticed in a crowded room and makes for a great talking point.

I love the watch’s ability to track an additional time zone by switching from home time on the bezel. Personally, the comfort and charismatic charm of the Jubilee bracelet is a winning feature.

Its micro-adjustment clasp is adaptable to changing environments but always looks classy.

Furthermore, the watch is a great value proposition. In my opinion, if you’re thinking of investing in the Rolex GMT-Master II watch , you’re not making a bad choice with the “Batman”.

Hands-On With The Steel Rolex GMT-Master II ‘Batman’ & ‘Pepsi’ 126710 Oyster Bracelet Watches

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

I know what you may be thinking: Why are we being tortured with an article about yet another Rolex timepiece that can’t easily be purchased? True enough, even though these Rolex GMT-Master II steel watches are technically available on the market, actually being able to buy a steel Rolex watch is an unenviable task for many consumers these days, given the high demand. That said, enough people are actually able to purchase these watches, and they will each be produced for long enough that most people who actually want one should be able to get one (eventually). So, let’s take a hands-on look at the 2021 Rolex GMT-Master II references 126710BLNR (black and blue bezel) and the 126710BLRO (blue and red bezel) watches on the now-available three-link Oyster bracelets.

As it is with many new Rolex watches, the hot fuss regarding these two models is something only seasoned brand followers will notice. In fact, these watches are so similar to existing Rolex 126710 GMT-Master II watches (debut in 2018 on aBlogtoWatch here) that they share the exact same reference number of their sister watches, which are the exact same but come on Rolex Jubilee bracelets. Now Rolex offers the GMT-Master 126710 BLRO (red and blue “Pepsi” dial) and 126710BLNR (black and blue “Batman” dial) on either the matching Rolex Oystersteel Jubilee bracelet or the iconic three-link Oyster bracelet. This has two interesting effects I will discuss below.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

First, let us point you to aBlogtoWatch coverage of the two previously released Rolex GMT-Master II 126710 watches that correspond with these same references numbers. I encourage you to review those posts, as we explain a bit more about how these GMT-Master II watches have differed from older-generation products, and about the latest in-house Rolex technology applied to them. Here, you can check our aBlogtoWatch hands-on coverage of the steel Rolex GMT-Master II “Pepsi” bezel 126710BLRO here , and then over here, we went hands-on with the Rolex GMT-Master II “Batgirl” 126710BLNR watch . This represents the latest-generation GMT-Master II watch that features the newly updated and refined 40mm-wide Rolex Oystersteel case, as well as the in-house-made caliber 3285 automatic GMT movement.

The 3285 automatic movement features the time, date, and a GMT hand that indicates a second time zone in 24-hour format. This “Superlative Chronometer” is double-certified for accuracy and performance (from COSC and also Rolex, internally). The movement is highly reliable and operates at 4Hz with 70 hours of power reserve. The 40mm-wide case is topped with a sapphire crystal (including “Cyclops” magnifier over the date window) and the case is water-resistant to 100 meters. The GMT-Master II is Rolex’s traditional travel watch, having originally been designed for the needs of commercial airline pilots who needed to know the time in other places.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

A key feature of many GMT-Masters was often a two-tone bezel whose differing colors corresponded to AM and PM time (not precisely, but you get the idea). This was meant to help wearers visually reference the day/night cycle more effectively, but it was also a place for Rolex to add splashes of color. Black and blue, and blue and red are just two of various colors mixtures that GMT-Master II bezels have had over the years. And Rolex could quite possibly add more color flavor in the future. What brought these two-tone GMT bezels into the modern era was producing them out of ceramic. Rolex was heralded as a pioneer when, in 2013, it released the reference 116710BLNR GMT-Master II (“Batman,” as enthusiasts later coined it) because it was the first time a two-tone ceramic bezel was used on a commercial watch (until then, ceramic came in one color, but Rolex developed a technique to create a portion of the ceramic to be a different color (the chemistry and pigment is different on each half) through the complex baking process that create the ceramic material.

The “Batman” name was really a response to the fact that the black and blue colors were novel for a Rolex watch and that previous colors have had nicknames such as “Pepsi,” “Rootbeer,” or “Kermit.” In truth only a small number of Batman costumes had black with blue together (I believe this was an Adam West Batman reference) but the Batman name for the 116710BLNR watch stuck. A year later in 2014 Rolex debuted the first red and blue bezel in ceramic (as opposed to anodized aluminum from more historic GMT-Master II watches) with the reference 116719BLRO GMT-Master II watch here . People loves the look of the watch but it was produced in 18k white gold and thus priced out of most people’s limits. The Pepsi bezel GMT-Master II remained a gold-only watch for a number of years.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

Now in 2021, Rolex has done the uncommon thing of producing a near clone to the 116719BLRO (which was in 18k white gold) with the new 126710BLRO in steel (Rolex likes to remind you they use their 904L steel alloy blend which they call Rolex steel). Rolex came near to this with the Jubilee version of the same watch, but now on the Oystersteel bracelet, they have effectively made the 18k white gold generation model feel like a bit of an estranged cousin that is older and costlier without the visual distinction. Rolex will of course say that while everything we said might be true, they were initially limited in production by the fact that making those blue and red Cerachrom bezels was slow. And that putting them in lower-production 18k white gold watches made sense, but that since then they have been able to improve the industrialization of the red and blue ceramic bezels such that they can now “afford” to put them into steel watches. In any event, I think it is excellent that there are even more versions of the now popular colors for the what is one of Rolex’s most popular and versatile watches — the GMT-Master II in steel.

The polished center-link on the GMT-Master II’s Oyster bracelet has always visually separated the GMT-Master II from, say the Submariner (whose bracelet links are brushed) with this decorative distinction. It is true that the Jubilee bracelet also has a similar decorative feature, but many people like the more masculine or rather industrial look of the Oyster bracelet on Rolex’s Oyster Professional line of watches. Some men even go so far as to say that the Jubilee bracelet is feminine, but in truth, Rolex makes these products to look good on either men or women, so it is reasonable to say that the Jubilee bracelet has feminine appeal. It also has masculine appeal, and for casual-wear purposes, many people actually find its smaller-linked bracelet to be more comfortable. The Oyster bracelet is clearly the more classic and conservative of the two bracelet options and is now finally available on two watches that the market would very much like to see with these options.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

This also means that the GMT-Master II “Batman” is officially a two-generation product having been produced as first the 116710BLNR and now as the 126710BLNR. Commercially speaking, this will help more people enjoy a modern icon — which is an important statement to make in an era when getting popular Rolex sports is a hard thing to do, given that it sounds like Rolex is going to keep producing more of them. As for the steel GMT-Master II Pepsi watch, the story is somewhat similar in that Rolex is now producing more units of a look that is known to be popular with consumers.

The comfortable Oyster bracelets have a folding and locking safety deployant as well as a 5mm-long “comfort extension,” which is a sort of simple micro-adjustment system. Now, I hope that should you want one of these timepieces, getting one will be just as comfortable as owning one — but who are we kidding, 2021? Retail price for the Rolex GMT-Master II 126710 BLNR and BLRO watches is $9,500 USD . Learn more at the Rolex watches website here .

History of The Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR Batman

The Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR, colloquially dubbed the "Batman" due to its striking black and blue Cerachrom bezel, represents a meld of Rolex’s historical and modern watchmaking prowess. Originating from the inaugural GMT-Master introduced in 1955, which was crafted to serve Pan Am pilots navigating through multiple time zones, the lineage evolved to the GMT-Master II in 1982, offering enhanced time zone tracking capabilities. The initial "Batman" (Rolex GMT Master II 116710BLNR) variant emerged in 2013, astonishing the horological world with its dual-colored single-piece ceramic bezel. In 2019, the 126710BLNR was unveiled, refreshing the "Batman" with a sophisticated Jubilee bracelet (the "Batgirl") and the advanced Calibre 3285, boasting an approximately 70-hour power reserve and improved efficiency and durability. Thus, the 126710BLNR is a synthesis of rich heritage and cutting-edge technology, celebrated and coveted in the contemporary watch market.

Rolex “Batman” GMT-Master II (116710BLNR) – Review On The Wrist & What’s In The Box

Sunrise In Philadelphia Highlighting Rolex GMT

The purpose of this page is to delve into the timeless and stunning Rolex Batman GMT-Master II reference 116710BLNR which Rolex introduced in 2013. Toward this end, I’ve included over 20 pictures of the  watch , from in the box to on the wrist and everywhere in between.

This article focuses on the first Rolex GMT-Master II “Batman,” with the nickname referring to the black and blue bezel with ceramic insert.

More specifically, this Rolex Batman possesses the  first EVER bi-colored ceramic bezel to be featured on Rolex watches. Many assume that it was the ceramic “Pepsi” bezel (blue/red) GMT-Master II which was the first Rolex with a dual-tone ceramic bezel, but this is not the case. Although ceramic can be brittle, its anti-scratch properties outweigh this downside.

The ceramic bezel manufacturing process is patented by Rolex, and it’s important to note that the bezel is a single component, not two differently-colored components that are somehow fused; this fact is what makes the bezel so difficult to produce, and it’s likely that few others will be able to replicate it to the same standard.

The Rolex Batman BLNR In Macro Shots

Macro Shot Of Rolex Batman Watch Face

For me, the blue and black bezel color makes the most sense of any bezel color combination for GMT watches as it perfectly represents “day” and “night”.

The bezel makes one full rotation in 24 moves that align with the hour markers. You use the blue “GMT” hand to read the time in the second time zone.

Many Rolex collectors believe that this GMT hand should always be set to GMT (London) time, but I however feel it’s up to the user to decide what is best for their lifestyle. Some choose to have their home time while away on vacation or business and revert back to a day/night indicator while at home. It’s really up to you.

The GMT complication was originally requested of Rolex Watches by Pam AM Airlines in the 1960s. With the advent of intercontinental flights, pilots needed a way to track multiple time zones with a single watch. Thus, the original GMT-Master was born.

At 12.4mm case depth, this modern Rolex GMT-Master II sits very well on the wrist and feels exceptionally sturdy thanks to its stainless steel Oyster bracelet.

The Oysterclasp is just as rugged in its construction, though it has been skillfully crafted, resulting in a beautiful component that is often overlooked. Additionally, the clasp boasts the Easylink extension which adds 5mm of length to the bracelet and can be easily opened or closed.

I originally hail from London, so setting the GMT hand to the GMT time zone is fine for me as it “bases” me back to the motherland and where all my family still reside. Now, however, I live in Philadelphia, which is the eastern time zone (-5 hours from GMT) of the USA. The picture above clearly shows how to read the time.

Using a combination of the “normal” hour hand, GMT hand, and bezel, it’s possible to crack up to three time zones.

  • The “Mercedes” hour hand is at 2:36 (and it’s the afternoon)
  • The blue GMT hand is pointing between 19 and 20, making it 7:36 pm in GMT (London)
  • Finally, if I were to rotate the bezel I could set a third time zone

Wearing Rolex Batman At 76ers Basketball

The blue and black bezel color scheme makes this a very versatile watch. Indeed, I’ve found it looks both great in a casual setting (above), and a more business casual setting (below).

I would however say that it’s not a formal watch, and one should consider other models, such as a plain time-only watch, for more formal business and black tie events.

What’s In The Box Of The GMT-Master II 116710BLNR

For many years, this Rolex Batman GMT-Master II was the most desired watch in the catalog. And while its popularity has not decreased, it now shares the stage with later GMT-Masters such as the Rolex Batgirl (black/blue bezel with a Jubilee bracelet) and the newer Pepsi GMT-Master II (red/blue bezel also with Jubilee bracelet).

Today, one need only take a look at the pre-owned market as proof that the first GMT-Master II remains one of the hottest Rolex watches out there. As of this writing, the 116710BLNR is trading at more than double its original retail price of about $9,000.

When this Batman was first announced in 2013, this kind of price premium over MSRP was absolutely unheard of. Yet, demand quickly grew to overtake the limited supply of Rolex sports watches, and this 116710BLNR was one of the first to experience it.

In the following series of pictures, you can see all of the accessories that you can expect to find in the box of a new Rolex GMT-Master II Batman.

There were roughly 2.7 million stickers attached to the watch…some of which were completely hidden. I even found several after a couple of weeks of wearing.

The box is a standard green Rolex box, solid and understated.

Rolex is historically a brand that made watches for explorers, divers, and sportspeople, becoming more linked to luxury in the modern age. This is carried over in the boxes and other supplied material, compared to other brands.

Top 5 Reasons Why The Rolex Batman GMT Is A Great Watch

This watch has quickly become one of my favorites in my collection. Below are my top five reasons why:

  • It’s been a timeless design for over 50 years and has no reason to stop being a classic. The face is very readable at a quick glance
  • It feels very solid on the wrist, not overly heavy but does stay in place very well
  • Bi-directional bezel, and
  • Date window (and “cyclops” magnifier for readability)
  • Solid depth rating of 100m, so you don’t have to worry about any spontaneous leaps into the ocean or heavy downpours
  • I don’t like to focus on the economics of my watch collection, but in this case, it’s hard to ignore the exceptional demand for this particular GMT-Master II Batman model that is so significantly exceeding the retail price. So if anyone is on the fence about buying this watch at the retail price from an Authorized Dealer, that’s a pretty strong “insurance policy” if you end up for some unknown reason not liking the watch

Final Thoughts On The Batman 116710BLNR

Overall I would highly recommend this watch for a wide array of men.

Firstly, the guy who is looking for a rugged watch that is good-looking and functional in plenty of situations, and is not as generic as the Rolex Submariner (even though they share the same case). And secondly,  the traveler who will actively use the GMT complication.

Even though it retails for $8,995 USD, I feel it offers outstanding value for money with the heritage of Rolex, the usability of the watch with its depth rating & GMT function, not to finally mention how strongly it’s exceeded its original retail price.

Expect to see plenty more looks of this watch on the  Bespoke Unit Instagram  page in the near and long-term future, as I have no plans to be getting rid of this piece anytime soon.

This is my favorite of the two-tone bezels. While I agree that this is a much more casual watch, it is also pretty incognito in a business setting; especially if paired with a dark suit.

' src=

That’s exactly right Bob.

It seems like the most natural / logical color combo being day and night.

Cheers – Paul

' src=

Paul, where did you buy it at 8300usd? Thx

Hello Dasdo,

Great to hear from you. I bought this directly from GovebergWatches.com.

I live in Philadelphia but I believe they ship worldwide.

Cheers, Paul

Hello from Philadelphia!

Thanks for the kind words.

Great review, Paul. I currently own the Hulk (116610LV), the GMT with black bezel (116710LN), and the Sea-Dweller (116600). All three are great. As I have the colors green and black among these three, I’m thinking of the Batman GMT due the the blue in its bezel. What do you think of my adding it to my collection? Thank you!

Thanks for the kind words Michael, and nice Rolex collection!

I think if you’re looking to stay within Rolex you have three really solid options:

1 – Stay Sporty: As you suggested, the Batman is a good option to add a little color, but is pretty much the same case design as your other three and you already own a GMT. But if you love the case and bezel design you won’t be disappointed!

2 – Extra Complications: The Sky-Dweller in stainless steel with the blue dial might be perfect (just released, so might be a small wait on this one), and as in non-precious metal is not a big financial jump from the Batman. It covers the new color, GMT function and an annual calendar to boot! This would be my choice.

3 – More Formal / Dressy: To go really left field, and get you into something more dressy, why not a Day-Date 40mm blue dial with Roman Numerals… (also the green dial on “Everose” is stunning too!) If that’s too far financially or don’t like the look, in a similar vein the Datejust 41 with a blue dial and fluted bezel is also a wonderful choice.

The world really is your oyster here….

Good luck and let me know what you end up with!

All the best,

Hey, Paul. Appreciate the quick and insightful reply. I actually was thinking of the new Sky Dweller with the blue dial as well. I’ll need to see one in person as I’m so used to the sports look and it’s durable sense. I’ll definitely let you know. Thanks again.

Just decided (& ordered) my first rolex! I doubted a long time between the Submariner date & the GMT II, but reading you article made me sway towards the GMT II 116710BLNR as she makes the GMT II even more special. And I wear a lot of blue, so the blue/black bezel really is a bonus to me… Probably I still have to wait some weeks or months, but it only makes it more special… And now I can start dreaming of my next Rolex, probably will be a more classic design like the datejust (blue dial/flutes bezel) Great review by the way…

Great to hear from you, and glad the article was of assistance. The GMT in general for me is a blockbuster over the Sub.

I’ve had mine for 18 months now, and enjoying it more and more! [I need to update the post to reflect my experience on the wrist, so look out for that…].

Next one is a great choice too re Datejust. I’m a Rolex junkie, but don’t forget brands like Omega and JLC that are less or in the same ballpark for price especially on the pre-owned market, and have some lovely dress watch options.

All the best, and congratulations on your first Rolex!

' src=

I agree with your review it’s an excellent watch I bought this year the new Daytona with ceramic Basel the new explorer 1 but by far I love the Batman!!!!!

Thanks for the comment, and great collection!

I’m on some lists to get the new Daytona, but not got one yet.

However, still loving the Batman.

' src=

Thanks Paul for the comprehensive review. It steered my decision to go for the BLNR (over the Milgauss GV), and I will be picking my Batman this Friday from the Nairobi Rolex AD. Oh, and hi from Kenya.

Dear Anthony,

Thanks for the kind words, makes all the time and effort worth it!

Both fantastic watches, but with the added functionality of the GMT hand and bi-directional bezel it always wins out for me!

Congratulations on the new purchase, and tag us on Instagram.com/bespokeunit if you have an account.

Cheers from London,

My name is Brandon and I live in New Zealand. Im enjoyed your write up and have been trying to source a RolexBatman for the past 8 months to no avail. Do you know of any reputable dealers that would ship to NZ? Thanks very much in advance.

Brandon Hiini

Hello Brandon,

I believe Govberg in Philly ships to NZ, as they have offices in Hong Kong too…

Best of luck,

' src=

I agree with what you said about this watch. It’s beautiful. My wife just gave me the Rolex Batman for Valentine’s Day, but I don’t think it’s for me. I have a Rolex DeepSea Sea Dweller Blue on order, but AD said it could be over a year before they get it in. I enjoy diving, and love the bulkinees of the DeepSea. This will be my first Rolex, and I would like to get the one I want. So I left all the stickers on the Batman Rolex for the next owner to peel off. I live in a rural area, and is very hard to find a buyer. I really don’t want to list it on EBay or anything like that. I would like to sell it face to face meeting at a Rolex dealer. Any recommendation on how I should sell this?

Thanks for your kind words.

That’s a very nice gift, shame it was a little off the mark for you. Some AD’s will take it back within a few days / weeks if unworn (especially if you / your family have had a previous relationship with them).

Aside from that could try to trade in / exchange it with an AD, or pre-owned dealer such as Govberg (but they are going to want to take 20-30% for their troubles). I’ve also had some good experiences with CrownAndCaliber.com re trades and getting good deals.

Lastly, I’ve successfully sold several watches on Chrono24.com (it’s a more pleasant experience than Ebay).

Hope that helps, and you get the Rolex of your dreams!

' src=

Wonderful article! Completely agree. Have bought several of the Rolex tool watches in the past as well as date / datejust. Got to say that I prefer this to Daytona as well. Will keep it as my only everyday watch and my signature look.

I have to agree, this is one of the most wearable day-to-day watches I’ve ever owed. I find myself wearing for long periods of time, neglecting the rest of my collection!

Right now I own a classic SS Datejust 36mm silver dial, with oyster bracelet. This is clearly a Dress Watch. Now I am looking for a Sports model watch with a black dial in the Rolex Professional line. My options are: Sub no date 114060, GMT 116710LN (Black) and the GMT 116710NBLNR. Leaning towards the BLNR for being a very unique, special, stunning, and very beautiful watch. But anyways I would like to know for feedback and suggestions on this one.

Dear Diego,

Love the classic SS Datejust in 36mm, perfect dress watch size.

As for your sporty desires, I’m very partial to the two tone blue / black GMT for it’s more “functional” day / night appearance. Also holds best value in the group. As a second choice I have some friends with the all black GMT, which is also a great option if you’re more conservative, I feel the sub is far too popular so the GMT gives the same look with a little something extra!

Hope that helps, and please let us know what you decide on.

Thank you very much Paul, indeed will let you know!

' src=

hi. tks for the review. do you know how much this watch weighs? tks

' src=

The Batman is a very light watch and comes in only at 127g on the scales including the bracelet and links.

' src=

I own the the all black steel, and I must say these watches can be worn casual or formal, as with a suit.

Hi Maurice,

Of course, it’s a question of personal preference. We think that the Batman goes well with more business casual style suits. However, we wouldn’t wear it for particularly dressy or very formal occasions. However, it is indeed a very versatile watch and it’s your call on how you enjoy it!

' src=

No Doubt Rolex Batman GMT is a great watch. I really like and want to buy this watch.

Yeah shes a stunner!

I’m very luck to have in my collection.

' src=

The BLNR is a great watch, for all occasions except, IMHO, for true formal wear, i.e. a “dinner suit,” or “tux.” for the colonials. I have a “Batgirl,” i.e. on a jubilee. It is the only Rolex I take a true shine to. Mine however comes from China. If I could I would buy one from Switzerland but given Rolex’ marketing games I can’t get one from an AD for MSRP. And I will not pay $20k for a wind up wath.

' src=

I believe that one of the factors that have caused the meteoric rise in steel sports watches such as the BLNR is the fact that it can pair relatively well with formal wear. Traditionally, no watch should be worn with formal wear however, with time, such “rules” have faded. I believe a classic dress watch, for example a date-only gold piece on a leather strap, is a better option though the full-bracelet steel option is now widely accepted (if only because of the price they carry.) Rolex GMT-Master II 116710 BLNR

The Rolex 116710BLNR , often referred to as the original “Batman,” transformed the GMT-Master II series with its unique blue and black bezel design. As the inaugural model in this category, this timepiece established a new benchmark in the realm of luxury sports watches, blending unmatched elegance, practicality, and status. From its launch, the 116710BLNR has enthralled both collectors and admirers, securing its position as one of the most coveted watches, even after the release of its successor, the 126710BLNR. This detailed analysis delves into the background, features, market worth, and the experience of owning this legendary watch, providing essential information for both experienced collectors and potential purchasers.

History of the Rolex 116710BLNR

History of the Rolex 116710BLNR

In 2013, the Rolex 116710BLNR made a bold debut, immediately capturing the attention of watch enthusiasts. It was the inaugural Rolex GMT-Master II to boast a two-tone Cerachrom bezel in black and blue, earning it the nickname “Batman.” This unique blend not only looked appealing but also represented a major advancement in Rolex’s ceramic bezel technology. The launch of the 116710BLNR highlighted Rolex’s dedication to pushing boundaries.

The Batman GMT-Master II came with the Caliber 3186, which included a Parachrom hairspring for improved accuracy. Moreover, the two-tone bezel was a technological feat, engineered to keep its colors vivid and prevent wear and tear—a reflection of Rolex’s focus on excellence and durability.

From the start, the Rolex 116710BLNR has gained a cult following. It quickly became a favorite among collectors for its unique appearance and rarity. The Batman’s appeal increased even more after its discontinuation in 2019, only to be succeeded by a newer model featuring a Jubilee bracelet. This transition solidified the original Batman’s place in Rolex GMT-Master II history as a sought-after collector’s item.

Specifications and Features of the Rolex 116710BLNR

Specifications and Features of the Rolex 116710BLNR

The Rolex 116710BLNR showcases meticulous craftsmanship and engineering, and thoughtful design. Every element of this watch, from its recognizable and iconic case to its superior movement, has been meticulously created to satisfy the stringent expectations of those who appreciate luxury timepieces. Let’s explore the key specifications and features that render the Batman GMT-Master II a genuine marvel of horology.

Case and Bezel Design

The 116710BLNR showcases Rolex’s timeless 40mm Oyster case, constructed from a durable 904L stainless steel that’s corrosion resistant. This robust case offers great protection for the watch movement while keeping a sleek and stylish design that fits comfortably on the wrist.

The highlight of this piece is the bi-color Cerachrom bezel. Crafted from a hard ceramic material, it’s virtually scratch-proof and resistant to fading, guaranteeing that the bold blue and black hues will stay vivid for many years. The bezel’s 24-hour graduations make it simple to read a second time zone, an important characteristic of the GMT-Master watch series.

Dial and Hands

The dial of the 116710BLNR is a masterpiece in both legibility and sophistication. The sleek black dial serves as an ideal canvas for the bright hour markers and hands. The distinctive Mercedes hour hand, accompanied by an extended GMT hand with a triangular tip, facilitates swift and precise time reading in low-light conditions.

A date window at 3 o’clock, magnified by the Cyclops lens on the sapphire crystal, contributes to the watch’s functionality without detracting from its visual appeal. The blue GMT hand mirrors the color scheme of the bezel, resulting in a unified and eye-catching design.

Movement and Caliber (Caliber 3186)

Central to the 116710BLNR lies the Rolex Caliber 3186, a self-winding mechanical movement fully developed and handcrafted by Rolex. This COSC-approved watch has a power reserve of about 48 hours and functions at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

The Caliber 3186 is equipped with Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring , providing increased durability against impacts and changes in temperature. Its Perpetual rotor guarantees smooth winding, and the watch’s design permits the hour hand to be adjusted independently, an essential attribute for those who travel often.

Bracelet and Clasp

The 116710BLNR is equipped with a Rolex’s sturdy and comfortable Oyster bracelet. Crafted from the same 904L stainless steel as the case, this three-link bracelet achieves an ideal mix of sturdiness and sophistication.

The bracelet is fastened with Rolex’s Oysterlock folding safety clasp, designed to keep it from opening by mistake. The Easylink comfort extension link enables easy modification of the bracelet’s size by as much as 5mm, guaranteeing an ideal fit even in various conditions.

Water Resistance and Durability

In line with Rolex’s notoriety for crafting robust watches, the 116710BLNR features a water resistance of 100 meters (330 feet). This level of protection is attained via the Triplock winding crown system, which employs three sealed areas to guarantee a watertight seal.

The mix of the scratch-proof sapphire crystal, tough ceramic bezel, and corrosion-resistant steel ensures the Batman GMT-Master II is a timepiece that can endure the challenges of everyday use while keeping its flawless look.

Functionality: Dual Time Zones and GMT Hand

The 116710BLNR’s GMT feature is more than just an attractive display; it serves as a useful instrument for today’s world traveler. The hour hand, which can be adjusted on its own, simplifies the process of setting the local time when moving through various time zones. Additionally, the 24-hour GMT hand and the rotating bezel allow for the reading of local time or another time zone simultaneously.

This dual time zone feature, along with the day/night indicated by the bi-color bezel, renders the Batman a must-have for those who travel internationally and for professionals who work in different time zones.

Market Value and Pricing

Market Value and Pricing Rolex Batman

Since its debut, the Rolex 116710BLNR has experienced a significant rise in its market value. Understanding what affects its price can offer important insights for those looking to buy or who already own this sought-after watch. Let’s delve into the financial details of this prized timepiece.

When it first hit the market in 2013, the Rolex 116710BLNR was sold for approximately $8,950. Yet, the watch’s worth has soared since then. Nowadays, used versions can sell for between $18,000 to $25,000, depending on their condition and whether they come with the original box and papers.

A variety of elements play a role in determining the watch’s current market value. These include its status as a discontinued model, the watch’s excellent condition, and the presence of its original box and papers. The rarity and high demand for the watch have also pushed up its prices, making it a wise investment for those interested in collecting.

Although past performance doesn’t ensure future success, the Rolex 116710BLNR is seen as a valuable investment item. Its distinctive design, historical importance, and the reputation of the Rolex brand all contribute to its strong presence in the market. As demand continues to grow and the supply remains scarce, the Batman GMT-Master II is expected to maintain, if not increase, its value in the future.

Buying Guide for the Rolex 116710BLNR

Buying Guide for the Rolex 116710BLNR

Obtaining a Rolex 116710BLNR demands thoughtful evaluation and familiarity with the market. Whether you’re an experienced collector or a newcomer to Rolex purchases, grasping the buying environment can assist you in making a well-informed choice. Let’s delve into the essential aspects of buying a Batman GMT-Master II.

Authorized Dealers vs. Pre-Owned Market

Since the 116710BLNR is no longer in production, it’s nearly impossible to find a brand-new version at an authorized Rolex dealer. This means the pre-owned market is the main option for acquiring this sought-after watch.

Established sellers of pre-owned luxury watches provide several benefits, including authenticated watches, possible warranties, and expert advice. Although the cost might be more than what you’d pay for original retail, you benefit from immediate access and availability and the chance to purchase a watch model that’s no longer in production.

How to Authenticate a Rolex 116710BLNR

Verifying the authenticity of a pre-owned Rolex is essential when buying one. Begin by looking at the watch’s general condition and finish – Rolex is famous for its superior craftsmanship. Look for specific details that are model-specific, like the blue and black ceramic bezel and the engraved rehault (the inner bezel ring) with the Rolex crown and serial number.

The watch’s movement should be a Caliber 3186, which can only be seen when the caseback is taken off by a skilled and qualified watchmaker. It’s important to ask for documentation, including the original box and papers if available. If unsure, seek advice from a reliable watch specialist or opt to buy from a reputable seller who provides authenticity guarantees.

Key Considerations Before Purchasing

Before committing, think about your motivations for purchasing the 116710BLNR. Is it because you love how it looks, how well it works, or its potential as an investment? Knowing what’s important to you will steer you in the right direction with your purchase decision.

Thoroughly review your budget, considering not only the initial cost but also the possible expenses for maintenance. Think about the watch’s state – some collectors seek out flawless pieces, while others value the charm of a piece that’s been well-used. Additionally, do your due diligence in terms of research with the seller, whether they’re a dealer or a private party, to make sure the transaction goes smoothly and securely.

Ownership Experience and User Reviews

Ownership Experience and User Reviews

The real measure of a high-end watch is found in how it performs in everyday use. The Rolex 116710BLNR has earned a loyal group of fans, who commend its adaptability, practicality, and lasting charm. Let’s explore the different elements of owning this renowned GMT-Master II model.

Wearability: Daily Use vs. Occasional Wear

The 116710BLNR achieves a remarkable balance between strength and sophistication, making it a great choice for everyday use and special events. Its 40mm case size is well-suited for a broad spectrum of wrist sizes, and the Oyster bracelet offers a snug and secure fit all day long.

Many wearers have noted that the watch’s adaptable design makes it easy to switch from a laid-back look to a more formal one. The durability of the ceramic bezel and the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal ensures that the Batman can handle the wear and tear of daily life without losing its charm, which is a key reason for its popularity as an excellent everyday luxury watch.

Maintenance and Care Tips

Maintaining your 116710BLNR at its best requires consistent maintenance and upkeep. Rolex suggests having the watch serviced every decade, but more frequent inspections could be advantageous for those wearing it every day. In the meantime, basic maintenance can significantly extend the life of your watch:

Clean the watch with fresh water after it encounters saltwater or chemicals. Wipe the case and bracelet with a gentle cloth to maintain cleanliness. Store the watch in a cool, dry location when it’s not being used. If the watch isn’t worn often, think about investing in a watch winder to ensure the movement operates smoothly.

What Owners Love About the Rolex 116710BLNR

Customers regularly praise various aspects of the Batman GMT-Master II. The unique blue and black bezel is often highlighted as a notable feature, providing a distinct look that distinguishes it from other Rolex watches. The GMT function is also highly regarded by regular travelers, who value the simplicity of monitoring several time zones.

The watch’s durability and dependability are often brought up, with numerous owners noting superb timekeeping accuracy over time. The status that comes with donning a Rolex, especially a rare one like the 116710BLNR, is another reason for customer contentment.

Common Concerns and Issues

Despite the overwhelmingly favorable feedback, a few owners have pointed out potential drawbacks. The intense demand and scarce supply might make it difficult and potentially frustrating to acquire the watch. A few users have complained that the Oyster bracelet does not offer micro-adjustment features, which might impact its comfort level in various conditions.

A handful of owners have noted that the blue color on the bezel can appear black under certain types of light, which could reduce the watch’s visual impact. Nonetheless, this is typically seen as a minor issue that doesn’t significantly detract from the watch’s overall attractiveness.

Comparison with Other Rolex GMT Models

Comparison with Other Rolex GMT Models

The Rolex GMT-Master II series boasts a variety of impressive watches, all distinct in their own ways. In this part, we’ll look at how the standard Batman 116710BLNR stands out when compared to its counterparts and the one that came after it, emphasizing the features that distinguish each watch. We’ll delve into how it measures up to the traditional black 116710LN, the celebrated Pepsi 126710BLRO, and its next-generation version, the 126710BLNR. Lastly, we’ll investigate what distinguishes the standard Batman in the wider GMT-Master II collection.

Rolex 116710BLNR vs. Rolex 126710BLNR: Evolution of the Batman

The comparison between the 116710BLNR vs 126710BLNR signifies a gentle yet important change in the Batman lineage. Although both versions feature the well-known blue and black ceramic bezel, the 126710BLNR introduces a few upgrades. A key improvement is the inclusion of the latest Caliber 3285 movement, which boosts the power reserve to 70 hours, an increase from the 116710BLNR’s Caliber 3186 48-hour capacity. Additionally, the 126710BLNR comes with a Jubilee bracelet, moving away from the Oyster bracelet of its predecessor, which some fans believe makes it look more elegant.

In terms of looks, the changes are barely noticeable, with both models keeping the 40mm case size and the classic Batman color palette. Yet, the 126710BLNR’s watch face has minor alterations, such as a tiny Rolex crown at 6 o’clock between “Swiss” and “Made.” Despite these updates, the 116710BLNR remains a favorite among collectors for its historical importance as the original Batman and its Oyster bracelet. The 126710BLNR, though technically better, continues the Batman tradition, attracting those who value the most recent Rolex advancements while preserving the watch’s iconic design features.

Rolex 116710BLNR vs. Rolex 116710LN

The 116710LN , commonly known as the “Black GMT,” is the monochromatic version of the Batman. Both versions have identical cases, movements, and bracelets, with the main distinction being the color of the bezel.

The 116710LN has an all-black ceramic bezel, while the 116710BLNR’s blue and black design makes it more distinctive. This special color combination has made the Batman more sought after and valuable in the secondary market. Yet, the 116710LN’s subtle sophistication attracts those who favor a more traditional aesthetic.

Rolex 116710BLNR vs. Rolex 126710BLRO (Pepsi)

Also known as “Pepsi,” the 126710BLRO is a well-known GMT-Master II model distinguished by its red and blue ceramic bezel. Although both the Batman and Pepsi models are in high demand, they appeal to slightly distinct preferences.

The Pepsi’s red and blue color palette pays homage to the original GMT-Master, giving it a more classic appearance. On the other hand, the Batman’s blue and black design leans towards a more contemporary style. Additionally, the 126710BLRO is equipped with an updated movement (Caliber 3285) and is available on a Jubilee bracelet, while the 116710BLNR is equipped with the Caliber 3186 and comes with an Oyster bracelet.

How the Batman Stands Out in the GMT-Master II Lineup

The 116710BLNR stands out in the GMT-Master II series due to its unique blend of blue and black on the bezel, striking a balance between the traditional all-black models and the more vibrant options like the Pepsi.

The Batman’s color palette is flexible, allowing it to be worn in a variety of environments while keeping its signature appearance that distinguishes it from other high-end sports watches. Its role as the initial Rolex to feature a two-color ceramic bezel adds a historical touch, making it especially attractive to those interested in collecting.

Moreover, the fact that the 116710BLNR is no longer in production has only made it more sought after, as it marks the last version of the Batman on an Oyster bracelet equipped with the Caliber 3186 movement. This mix of elements has solidified its place not only within the Rolex collection but also in the wider market of luxury watches.

Rolex 116710BLNR Review

The Rolex 116710BLNR “Batman” GMT-Master II is a true legend in the realm of high-end timepieces. Its combination of cutting-edge design, functional utility, and classic beauty has secured its position as a favorite among watch lovers and collectors.

From its revolutionary two-color ceramic bezel to its dependable and sturdy mechanism, every feature of the Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR highlights the brand’s dedication to quality. The watch’s role as a functional travel companion and a fashionable accessory demonstrates its adaptability and wide popularity.

Batman Rolex GMT Master II 126710BLNR & 116710 BLNR Review: The Blue & Black Rolex "Batman"

Why is Rolex Batman so popular? What's the connection with The Dark Knight and the Black & Blue Rolex Batman watch? Find out now!

What is a Batman Rolex?

Possibly the most expensive and famous of all Batman watches is the Rolex "Batman".  Of course, we're not talking about any watch that was worn on the wrist of Bruce Wayne. Rather, the Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR (new 2021 model) and 116710BLNR (older 2013 model) with a two-colored black and blue bezel are another one of their watches that got a superhero nickname. Let's find out how and why this Rolex watch is connected to the Dark Knight.

Who wears a Rolex Batman?

Celebrities such as singer John Mayer, Actors Rob Lowe (Parks and Recreation) & Steve Carell (The Office), famous figures and athletes such as tennis champion Roger Federer, and Kasper Schmeichel (the goalkeeper for Leicester), and Karim Benzema (the striker for Real Madrid), Christian Benteke (professional Belgian soccer player) and many more sport stars.

First, we need to begin with what made the difference between the old Rolex GMT series and the new Rolex GMT-Master 2 series ? For starters, Rolex has decided to sell watches that make more use of their new patented "Cerachrom" hardened ceramic bezel inserts which are highly scratch resistant and won't fade with exposure to UV rays. In doing so Rolex had to challenge themselves to find a way to combine two colors with ceramic material. Back when bezels were manufactured using metal, this wasn't such a big deal but doing the same thing with ceramic material takes some serious creative thinking. Good thing that Rolex was never accused of being uncreative when it comes to manufacturing methods. They practically wrote the book on innovation.

Another difference between the two automatic winding sports models is the Oyster bracelet which was used on the previous model with ref 116710BLNR. In 2019, with the release of the next generation of the watch, reference number 126710, the Oyster bracelet was first replaced with the Jubilee bracelet on the newer models with the ref number 126710BLNR, and only in 2021 did they reintroduce the original Oyster bracelet to the newer model 126710 Oyster BATMAN.

The Rolex Batman price  literally shot up over the past few years and it's virtually impossible to buy one for the MSRP anywhere and it doesn't look like it will come down in price any time soon either. So now may be a good time to sell one. The BLNR is one of those exceptional watches where if you bought one a couple of years ago and never wore it, you would be sitting on a few thousand dollars more than you originally paid. With the volatility of Rolex prices lately, there's no saying that it will be dropping in price in the foreseeable future so if you buy one you will likely pay at the very least the full list price.

The BLNR Rolex 116710 is not the first two-tone bezel Rolex. The Rolex GMT collection has always had watches with two-tone bezels…well before the Rolex GMT Batman was introduced. This is a tradition that has lasted for over 50 years. From their "Pepsi" bezel with red and blue tones (which come to think of it, with those colors it would be more catchy if it was called the "Superman") to their "Coke" bezel with red and black (Daredevil or Deadpool?) Rolex two-toned bezels always somehow received a nice nickname. We now have yet another color combination for the bi-colored bezel blue and black which is called the "Batman" or "Dark Night". Some even call it "The Bruiser" because of the black and royal blue hues. Why Batman? Well, black and blue are some of the most common color combinations used in the classic Batman comics and shows, and …it sure sounds catchy!

Rolex has used these duotone bezels for over half a century and the Pepsi and Coke dials had a practical purpose. They were an easy way to distinguish between the AM and PM hours.  The only catch was that the colors and contrast really stuck out like a sore thumb and those that are more conservative in the way they dress would need another choice of colors that would sit well in business attire. While there are many people that still love the red & black Coke bezels and red & blue Pepsi bezels around the dials, the black & blue is pushing its way up in popularity, most likely because of the versatility of the color combination of this black and blue bezel.

Which special features does the Batman Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR have to offer?

The Rolex GMT-Master II "Dark Night" or "Batman" watch has a dual time zone feature and for the second time zone hand, uses a matching blue color on the GMT arrowhead hour hand which has a luminous fill. This GMT time zone complication is very convenient for people who travel or that make frequent calls to a country or state with another time zone.

The 40mm Rolex Batman GMT watch's case and bracelet are crafted of the highly corrosion-resistant 904L Oystersteel and utilizes the patented "Triplock" screw-down crown which locks the case as tight as the hatch of a submarine. This protects the Rolex 3186 caliber automatic movement which is a 31 jewel, COSC certified Superlative Chronometer which has an accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day and beats at 28,800 VPH for up to a 50-hour power reserve. The dial has a luminous, seconds, minutes, and hour hand with luminous hour markers and a cyclops magnifying lense over the date window.

To people who love luxury watches, Rolex is truly a superhero watchmaker and deserves every hero nickname they get such as the Rolex Batman watch. Another superhero watch you should look at is the Submariner "Hulk" which got its nickname and fame due to its unique color . One of the good things about this watch is that in the dark night, you'll find a very bright legible dial. Index and dot hour markers and hands are filled with luminous material and glow in a bright blue hue.

Is the Rolex Batman discontinued? From the time this article was written, the Rolex model 116710 BLNR discussed here has become more scarce since it's not being produced anymore and can still be found on the pre-owned market if you contact us . On the plus side, you can have a look at the full specs of the  NEW 2019 Rolex GMT Master II "Batman" Jubilee model # 126710BLNR and the even newer 2021 126710BLNR Oyster model side-by-side :

Rolex Batman vs Batgirl - Difference between popular GMT Master II models

Rolex Batman got its nickname from the DC character due to the use of black and blue colors on its Cerachrom bezel. Over the years, there is another nickname that has got associated with the GMT Master II line, and that is the Batgirl. There has been a long-standing debate about Rolex Batman vs Batgirl. Which is the better one, and what is the difference to begin with? Let’s find out.

Rolex Batman vs Batgirl – What’s the difference?

Rolex GMT-Master II with a black and blue bezel is referred to as Batman or Batgirl. While the Oyster bracelet model is known as Batman, the Jubilee one is referred to as Batgirl. Yes, this means that the only difference between a Batman and a Batgirl is the type of bracelet used.

If they both have the same bezel color combination, why are both not called Batman? This is because these nicknames are not official, and they are given by Rolex fans.

Here’s why the Rolex community decided to give them different names:

GMT Master II Batgirl

After the discontinuation of the reference 116710BLNR in 2019, Rolex introduced the ref. 126710BLNR but this time only in the Jubilee bracelet. In order to easily differentiate between the two different models, the community gave the newer version the nickname Batgirl.

Rolex Batgirl GMT

At that time, Batman and Batgirl were used to differentiate between the 116710BLNR and the 126710BLNR models. Compared to the 116710BLNR, the 126710BLNR brought an upgraded 3285 movement, offering a power reserve of up to 70 hours. The new movement is also more shock resistant and resistant to magnetic-field.

While you cannot see the movement unless you open the case back, what you can see is the dial. The dial on the two models is slightly different, where the 126710BLNR got a very tiny change. The dial on the older model said “Swiss Made” below the 6 o’clock hour marker, whereas the one on the newer model featured a Rolex crown in the middle of the words Swiss and Made. This crown helped people differentiate between a 116710BLNR with a Jubilee and a 126710BLNR with a Jubilee.

Although the 126710BLNR was initially launched only on a Jubilee bracelet, Rolex later released a 126710BLNR with an Oyster bracelet as well.

Since then, any Rolex GMT Master II with a blue and black bezel and an Oyster bracelet is called the Batman. The Batgirl is referred to any blue/black bezel GMT Master II sitting on a 5-link Jubilee bracelet.

Rolex Batman – Still a fan favorite

Rolex Batman is a highly coveted timepiece that was introduced back in 2013. It was the first GMT Master II watch to feature a bi-color ceramic bezel. The watch was showcased to the watch community at the Baselword 2013. The two-tone design and the unique black and blue color combination were immediately appreciated by watch enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Rolex Batman GMT Master

While the Rolex Pepsi gives more of a classy look, the Batman GMT Master II gives a sporty vibe. This is why fans always prefer Batman in an Oyster bracelet. Thus, this gives Batman a slight edge over Batgirl in the watch community.

GMT Master II Batman or Batgirl – What do the celebrities prefer?

One should wear watches based on their own taste but not on the basis of what others wear. Nevertheless, the Rolex GMT Master II Batman seems to be a more popular choice among celebrities when compared to Batgirl. The Batman has been spotted on the wrists of Roger Federer , Rob Lowe and Christian Benteke.

Rolex Batgirl, on the other hand, seems to be a choice of the rapper AJ Tracey.

Price difference between the two models

Today, at the Rolex Authorized Dealer showroom, you can only buy the 126710BLNR. Though, the model is now available on both Oyster and Jubilee bracelets. In case you are looking for the 116710BLNR, you will have to check the secondary market. For your convenience, we have listed rough prices for both retail as well as the second-hand market as per the date of publishing this article.

Model Market Price
126710BLNR – Oyster Retail €10050
126710BLNR – Jubilee Retail €10250
126710BLNR – Oyster Secondary €17500
126710BLNR – Jubilee Secondary €18500
116710BLNR – Oyster Secondary €16000

Batman vs Batgirl Rolex – Why give different nicknames to two watches that are essentially the same

After reading the aforementioned information, I am sure this question must have popped into your head. All of a sudden, this has got us thinking, why is a GMT Master II Pepsi always called a Pepsi no matter what bracelet it is on? Even though you can get a slightly different shade of red and blue due to the different material used on the bezel. To recall, the GMT Master II was available with Bakelite or aluminum bezels before the ceramic one came out. But all of those models are still called Pepsi.

While the Rolex GMT Master II Batman gives a more sporty look, the Batgirl offers a more dressier look.

This has everything to do with the fact that when the 116710BLNR was discontinued, Rolex made the 126710BLNR available only in Jubilee. If the 126710BLNR was launched in both Oyster and Jubilee models, we might have never seen the nickname Batgirl.

Is Batgirl a women’s watch?

Since the watch has a feminine nickname, many think Batgirl is tuned towards women. But that is not the case. Rolex watches are designed to be unisex, and the GMT Master II has been classified as a men’s watch. The GMT Master II has a 40mm dial and both men and women can wear it.

Rolex Batgirl vs Batman – Which one should you pick?

If you have landed on this article, chances are that you are contemplating between picking a Batman or a Batgirl. The short and simple answer here would be – it depends. It depends on what you prefer. In case you are a person like me who likes a more sporty-looking wristwatch, you are going to love the Batman. But if you are a person who likes their watch to be more elegant, then the Batgirl should be your pick.

Who wore it better: Batman or Batgirl? The cases for and against Gotham’s power couple

Who wore it better: Batman or Batgirl? The cases for and against Gotham’s power couple

Few acronyms in the watch world are as recognisable, or as likely to trigger emotions than the BLNR. Rolex’s steely professional model GMT-Master II Ref.116710BLNR and subsequent Ref.126710BLNR have been unendingly popular ever since the former was unveiled way back in 2013 at Baselworld. What might have seemed like a hype watch has well and truly gone the distance.

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Batgirl

The origin story goes that Rolex was keen to release their first Cerachrom bezelled “Pepsi” GMT-Master II to market, following on from the all-black variant Ref.116710LN being released in 2007. But the watchmaker was having considerable trouble manufacturing the two-tone ceramic bezel in the renowned red and blue colour scheme.

So, what did Rolex do? They went from all-black to all-Bat in Gotham City; a nice transition when you think about it. BLNR (for those who don’t know, BL stands for “Bleu”, and “NR” for Noir) was not exactly a slow burn in terms of critical reception. It blew up immediately.

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Batgirl

The now iconic colour scheme saw the top half of the Cerachrom bezel coloured in a deep and shimmery black, while the bottom half scored a blue, almost purple tone.

The dial would remain largely the same as its all-black brethren, however the “GMT-Master II” lettering on the dial was not coloured blue like many thought it would be. Instead it was white, most likely because the shade of blue used would have been illegible on the black dial. The other major change on the dial was the stem of the GMT hand being coloured in the same blue found on the lower half of the bezel.

Now, this is where the similarities between Batman and Batgirl end, so let’s take a look at both models, and we’ll see who ultimately wears the batsuit best.

The pros and cons of the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref.116710BLNR “Batman”

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Batgirl

No doubt the biggest selling point for the Batman, and the most obvious point of difference, compared to its younger sibling was its fabled Oyster bracelet. When attached to BLNR, the three-piece wonder, hewn from ultra-tough Oystersteel (904L steel), featured both polished centre links and brushed links on either side.

The Oyster bracelet has always been ubiquitous with Rolex Professional (sports) model timepieces … and it just suits this watch so well. It makes the 116710BLNR look tough and robust, and it’s surely a huge part of why it garnered the “Batman” nickname. It also pays homage in all the right ways to every professional model GMT-Master and GMT-Master II that came before it.

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Batgirl

However, there are cons to this model, and chief among them is the movement.

OK, maybe ‘con’ is a bit of a stretch, it’s more a case of choosing between two princes. In isolation, Calibre 3186 is actually a brilliant movement. It offered a host of features that included Rolex’s genius blue Parachrom hairspring, 50 hours of power reserve and superlative chronometer certification.

But, compared to the newer movement found in Batgirl, 3186 is left wanting in terms of technology, power reserve and manufacturing techniques. It also used different types of lubricants compared to the newer movement, which meant that the service interval when new came up two years earlier – five, instead of seven.

The verdict

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Batgirl

Wholly unsurprising to say that, on the whole, Batman was a brilliant watch, and although the RRP was just $10,850 AUD back in the day, on the secondhand market, 116710BLNR still commands a price tag closer to 20 grand. The proof is in the price. It’s one of only a handful of contemporary watches that can claim icon status.

The pros and cons of the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref.126710BLNR “Batgirl”

Rolex GMT-Master II Batman Batgirl

Unveiled at Baselworld 2019, the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref.126710BLNR represents the latest iteration of the storied namesake … and it might be for quite some time, given the state of new watch releases in 2020.

Of course, the most visible change to the newest GMT-Master II was the ditching of the Oyster bracelet in favour of Rolex’s arresting, and indubitably dressy, five-piece Jubilee bracelet.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

This is how Ref.126710BLNR scored its “Batgirl” nickname, because while still rocking the black and blue aesthetic, the use of Jubilee in place of Oyster gave the watch a decidedly more delicate look. Is it feminine enough to deserve the title? You decide, the name is a little puerile if you ask us. Jubilee bracelets, in the right setting, can be magisterial and masterful on the wrist – the stuff of true style.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

What it lacked in visual machismo though, it more than made up for with technical prowess. And that’s because Batgirl is powered by the newer Calibre 3285, which was first unveiled the previous year in a number of models, including the new “Pepsi” Ref. 126710BLRO.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

3285 scored a host of new parts and features that included no less than 10 patents, the all-new Chronergy escapement, a beefed-up 70 hours of power reserve and Paraflex shock absorbers, which improve the movement’s overall durability.

The use of the Jubilee bracelet on the new BLNR also hinted at a precedent that Rolex was setting for all GMT-Master II models moving forward – Oystersteel variants would come equipped with Jubilee bracelets, while Rolesor (two-tone) and solid precious metal models would utilise the Oyster bracelet.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

It’s curious logic. Quirky even, to pair the more utilitarian bracelet with precious and two-tone models and the dressier bracelet with tough and tooly 904L steel, but there you go – Rolex doing what Rolex does, keeping everybody on their toes.

Much like its older sibling, Batgirl, which retails in Australia for $13,600, commands a much heftier price tag in the grey and secondhand market. It is one of the hardest watches on the planet to buy new from an authorised dealer.

rolex batman vs yachtmaster

So, there you have it, Batman and Batgirl. Who wore it better? Which would I prefer? Well, if it were my money, I’d be looking for a mint Batman. I just think the Oyster bracelet suits it better. But, truth be told, I would be honoured to own either.

Overview of the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II

The Rolex Yacht-Master range encapsulates luxury and precision in a line of nautically inspired timepieces. Introduced in 1992, this Rolex watch borrows heavily from the Submariner series. The original Yacht-Master- the ref. 16628 with a 40mm Yellow Gold case, Cyclops lens over the date, triple lock crown, and Oyster bracelet- was modeled after the first ever Submariner- ref. 16610- which has a 40mm stainless steel case.

They both used the Caliber 3135 movement!

The tool watch gained traction with time, coming in various case, material, and bracelet options, as we shall see shortly. It’s no wonder it’s among Rolex’s most varied pieces in the Professional series.

Meanwhile, Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master II more than a decade later in 2007. It’s a watch tailored to the needs of professional sailors with its innovative regatta chronograph.

Housed in a more robust 44mm Oyster case, it leveraged Rolex’s expertise in precision and functionality, offering a programmable countdown with mechanical memory for yacht racing. Distinguishing itself from its predecessor, it brought a new level of technical sophistication to the yachting world.

Design Characteristics

The Yacht-Master line portrays the typical design layout of Rolex sports watches, with an Oyster case (that’s water-resistant to 100m), a Twin-lock winding crown on the side of the case for setting the time and date and winding the movement manually, lume-filled Mercedes-style hands and hour markers, and a date function at three o’clock that’s amplified by a Cyclops magnifier lens on the crystal.

On the other hand, the Yacht-Master II takes on a more daring design, featuring a larger Oyster case (water-resistant to 100m) with a Triplock winding crown and chronograph pushers for operating the regatta chronograph, a busier dial with a programmable countdown feature (1 to 10 minutes), and a special Ring Command bezel that’s also present in Rolex’s Sky-Dweller collection .

Interestingly, the Yacht-Master II and Sky-Dweller are some of Rolex’s most complicated watches for now.

Rolex Yacht-Master in different case size (37mm, 40mm, 42mm)

The Yacht-Master comes in various case options, namely 29mm (discontinued), 35mm (discontinued), 37mm (Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 268621), 40mm (Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 126622), and 42mm (Rolex Yacht-Master Oysterflex ref. 226659).

In terms of materials, Rolex has utilized several precious metals in the collection:

  • Yellow Gold
  • Stainless steel and Yellow Gold (Yellow Rolesor)
  • Stainless steel with a Platinum bezel (Rolesium)
  • Everose Gold (a patented proprietary Rose Gold alloy)
  • Stainless steel and Everose Gold (Everose Rolesor)

In contrast, the Yacht-Master II is only available in a 44mm case size. It’s available in fewer material alternatives:

  • Stainless steel with a blue ceramic Cerachrom bezel
  • Stainless steel and Everose Gold with a blue ceramic Cerachrom bezel
  • White Gold with a Platinum bezel (discontinued)
  • Yellow gold with a blue Cerachrom bezel

Bezels

Rolex Yacht-Master bezel

The two watches have a bidirectional rotatable bezel that’s integral for tracking sailing time intervals. The difference comes in their designs.

The Yacht-Master has a bezel crafted from gold or platinum. This rotating bezel has raised numerals and 60-minute graduations. Plus, it operates independently from the watch’s inner mechanism.

The Yacht-Master offers a more noticeable Ring Command bezel with the ‘YACHT-MASTER II’ inscription and molded 1-10 numerals in varying colors depending on the materials used. The Yacht-Master II’s bezel is connected to the movement, and its wearers use it to operate the regatta chronograph function.

The watches’ dials are well-suited for their respective purposes.

Rolex Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master has a simpler dial design, with Mercedes-style hands and round/triangle/rectangle or gem-set hour markers. Rolex has used several luminous materials on these excellent luxury watches over the years:

  • SuperLumiNova
  • Chromalight

Rolex Yacht-Master II

The Yacht-Master II has a more detailed and functional dial with slimmer hands decorated with Chromalight lume, a red arrow-tipped hand, a central chronograph hand, square-shaped hour markers, a countdown function with mechanical memory that gracefully curves from 8 to 4 o’clock, and a running seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.

The red arrow-tipped hand shows how much time is left in the countdown. Meanwhile, the central chronograph hand can fly back or fly forward to its starting position while in motion, and the countdown function allows skippers to sync it on the fly to match the official race countdown (it’s the first in the world, BTW).

Note: The Yacht-Master II had square hour markers and straight baton-shaped hands from 2007 to 2017.

2017 welcomed several changes: an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock, a rectangular hour marker at six o’clock, and a Mercedes-style hour hand to offer more lume and enable easier differentiation from the minute hand.

Bracelets and Clasps

Rolex Yacht-Master watch with oyster and oysterflex strap

Rolex equips the Yacht-Master with Oyster and Oysterflex bracelets. The three-piece Oyster offers classic luxury and sturdy comfort and is finished with a high polish or brushed look. It also has a secure Folding Oysterlock safety clasp with Rolex Glidelock extension system that ensures the watch remains fastened around the wrist.

As for the Oysterflex bracelet , it’s a black strap crafted from a flexible Titanium and nickel alloy metal blade at its core and is clad in a high-density elastomer. It also boasts a tiered design that raises the timepiece away from the wrist and a Folding Oysterlock safety clasp with Rolex Glidelock extension system.

The YachtMaster II also features an Oyster bracelet, typically equipped with the Rolex Glidelock system, allowing fine adjustments and reflecting its more technical and sporty heritage.

Caliber Comparison

The Rolex Yacht-Master lineup features various movements, with the Yacht-Master 37mm housing a self-winding Caliber 2236 movement, the same movement used in Datejust 36 and Datejust 41 timepieces . It has 31 jewels, a 55-hour power reserve, and a 28,800vph frequency.

Meanwhile, the 40mm and 42mm watches utilize the Caliber 3235, a well-respected automatic movement recognized for its reliability. This 31-jewel movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph) and offers a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.

In contrast, the Yacht-Master II is equipped with the self-winding Caliber 4161, a chronograph movement specifically developed for this model’s unique regatta countdown function. It has 48 jewels, a 72-hour power reserve, and a 28,800vph frequency.

  1. Rolex Batman: A Complete Guide to This Iconic GMT Watch

The Rolex GMT Batman ref.116710BLNR is iconic for its distinctive design. Indeed, at the time of its release in 2013, Rolex presented its first two-tone ceramic bezel. It was also the first bezel of its kind in watchmaking history.
