Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the  Ocean 71

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 28.0 suggests that, in the right hands, the Ocean 71 will have enough performance to leave most other sailboats of similar waterline length well astern.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 27.3 means that a sailboat like the Ocean 71 (which doesn't have its ballast concentrated in a bulb at the foot of a deep keel), is likely to benefit from being reefed early to keep her sailing upright in a moderate breeze.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 161, tells us the Ocean 71 is clearly a light displacement sailboat. If she's loaded with too much heavy cruising gear her performance will suffer to a degree.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 41.4 suggests that crew comfort of an Ocean 71 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a heavy bluewater cruising boat. Pitching and rolling will be well damped - your cup of coffee on the salon table stands a reasonable chance of staying there in most conditions.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.7 tells us that an Ocean 71 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

Ocean 71 Sailboat: A Bluewater Cruiser with Style and Speed

If you are looking for a sailing boat that can take you to any corner of the world with comfort and performance, you might want to consider the Ocean 71 sailboat. This yacht is a classic design by the renowned Dutch naval architect E. G. Van de Stadt, who also created the legendary Ocean 60 and Ocean 80 models.

The Ocean 71 was built by Southern Ocean Shipyard in England from 1970 to 1982, and only 16 units were produced. Here are some of the features that make this boat a great choice for recreational sailors who want to explore the oceans.

Overview The Ocean 71 is a ketch-rigged monohull with a length of 21.6 meters (70 feet 11 inches) and a beam of 5.4 meters (17 feet 9 inches). It has a displacement of 40 tons and a draft of 2.7 meters (8 feet 10 inches). It can carry up to 2,000 liters (528 gallons) of water and 1,500 liters (396 gallons) of fuel. It has a spacious cockpit with twin wheels and a large aft deck with a dinghy davit. The hull is made of fiberglass with a balsa core, and the deck is teak-laid.

Accommodation The Ocean 71 has a generous interior layout that can accommodate up to 10 guests in five cabins, plus two crew members in a separate cabin forward. The owner's cabin is located aft, with a double berth, a sofa, a desk, a wardrobe and an ensuite head with shower. There are two guest cabins on each side of the saloon, each with twin berths and a shared head with shower. The saloon has a U-shaped settee and a large dining table on the port side, and a navigation station and a bar on the starboard side. The galley is located forward of the saloon, on the port side, and is equipped with a four-burner stove, an oven, a fridge, a freezer and ample storage space. The crew cabin has two single berths and an ensuite head with shower.

Hull and Deck The Ocean 71 has a sleek and elegant hull shape that gives it excellent sailing performance and stability. It has a moderate freeboard and a low profile that reduces windage and drag. The deck is wide and uncluttered, with plenty of room for sunbathing, relaxing or working on sails. The cockpit is well-protected by a sprayhood and a bimini, and has comfortable seating for the helmsman and the guests. The cockpit also has an integrated table for al fresco dining or drinks. The aft deck has a large locker for storing sails, ropes or other equipment, as well as a hydraulic davit for launching or retrieving the dinghy.

Mast and Rigging The Ocean 71 has a split rig that consists of two masts: a main mast that is keel-stepped and carries the mainsail and the mizzen staysail, and a mizzen mast that is deck-stepped and carries the mizzen sail and the spinnaker. The rig is designed to be easy to handle by a small crew or even single-handedly, as most of the lines are led back to the cockpit through clutches and winches. The spars are made of aluminum alloy, except for some models that have carbon fiber masts for extra lightness and stiffness. The standing rigging is made of stainless steel wire with swaged terminals, while the running rigging is made of synthetic rope or spectra. The sails are made of dacron or laminated cloth, depending on the model and the owner's preference. Some models have in-mast or in-boom reefing systems for convenience and safety.

Keel and Rudder The Ocean 71 has a fin keel with a lead bulb that provides good stability and maneuverability. The keel is bolted to the hull with stainless steel bolts that are accessible from inside the boat for inspection or maintenance. The rudder is a balanced spade rudder that is attached to the skeg by two pintles and gudgeons. The rudder is controlled by two stainless steel wheels in the cockpit through cables or rods that run through tubes under the deck.

The Ocean 71 sailboat is an impressive yacht that combines style, speed and comfort in one package. It is ideal for long-distance cruising or chartering, as it offers ample space, amenities and performance for its guests and crew.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

vds design #194. Based on the famed ocean racer STORMVOGEL (1969). Offered as a racing yacht or luxury cruiser. An extremely successful model with more than 20 built. A few were finished by Camper & Nicholson. ‘Ocean Spirit’, (with Robin Knox-Johnson & Leslie Williams as crew), won the double-handed Around Britain race in 1970. Another OCEAN 71 was owned by Graham Kerr, known, at the time on TV, (in both the UK and USA) as the ‘Galloping Gourmet’.

A wonderful, light, fast, comfortable and exceptionally easy to handle 71ft Ketch, designed by Van de Stadt in the 60ties. Owned since 1998 by a renowned ocean regatta sailor who put her through 2 extensive refits in 1998 and 2016 and over the years continually maintained and upgraded her to the highest standard. The owner crossed the ocean many times 3 handed and even 2 handed with ease covering some 200Nm per day .She is in mint condition and ready for long passages with a new owner.

Ocean 71, OCEAN JOY – mile munching aristocracy & now reduced in price!

August 2nd, 2023

ocean-71-ocean-joy-now-reduced-in-price-1-main

Southern Ocean Shipyard in Poole in the UK pioneered the build of capable world class bluewater cruising yachts in GRP first with the Pioneer, Excalibur and Gallant 53. The Ocean 71 came next followed by the Ocean 60 and Ocean 62, Ocean 72, Ocean 75 and Ocean 80. They were massively successful crossing oceans and sailing far. Their strong construction and robust systems gave them endurance and provided a reliable platform for their owners and crews. Built not just for private owners with crew but also for the burgeoning charter market, they were designed to be handled and sailed reliably by small crews so that they could both reposition and be sailed by their crew when chartering to non-sailors.

The Ocean series won hearts and minds the world over and continue to cross oceans and bring smiles to their crews today.

For current price and further details –  https://www.berthoninternational.com/yacht-sales-brokerage/yachts-for-sale/ocean-71-ocean-joy/ .

History of Ocean 71, OCEAN JOY

OCEAN JOY was built for a family for private use and we have some imagery showing her in her first ownership sailing in the Mediterranean which can be seen below. She was launched in 1972 and these next two photographs were shared with us by her original owner’s family.

ocean-71-ocean-joy-now-reduced-in-price-2

In 1998, in this ownership OCEAN JOY found herself in the UK at Hamble Yacht Services on the River Hamble and there she was totally rebuilt to fit her for a serious cruising programme which she then undertook in his ownership. Since then she has been updated and reworked including a major refit at Foxes in Ipswich in 2016, including osmosis treatment and all new paint and new rigging and today she looks tremendous.

She has crossed the Atlantic about 12 times with this owner, cruising in the Caribbean and on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA. 200 mile days are the norm and she is easily handled with 3 crew.

Exploring the Accommodation & Deck Equipment of Ocean 71, OCEAN JOY

Below she OCEAN JOY has a modern feel with a combination of stainless steel and blue leather for a bright and fresh feel. This has been retained as it is an essential part of the yacht.

ocean-71-ocean-joy-now-reduced-in-price-4

She has a comfortable owners’ stateroom with a double and single leading to the large main saloon.

ocean-71-ocean-joy-now-reduced-in-price-5

There is a single berth cabin opposite her large galley and forward there are 2 guest cabins with upper and lower berths. Forward is to focsul which for storage, workshop and a much needed area when you are sailing far.

ocean-71-ocean-joy-now-reduced-in-price-6

Her ketch rig with fully battened main and mizzen and power for genoa makes her easy to handle and provides a versatile sail plan. Without teak decks, she is easy to maintain and she has a large centre cockpit for sailing and entertaining with an aft cockpit for her owner and guests to enjoy. She is an efficient Sailing machine

An Insight into the Current Plans Ocean 71, OCEAN JOY

OCEAN JOY must now be sold as the owner’s sailing programme is completed and he has swallowed the anchor. The price has recently been reduced to £499,000 which is a significant reduction on her original ask of £585,000. She is European and UK VAT paid. She is perfect for adventure sailing or for a family to sail around the planet aboard. Her biggest modesty is her price.

Review of Ocean 71

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat equipped with a ketch rig. A ketch rig is generally considered easier to handle, because the sails are smaller, and because it can sail on most points to the wind with one sail completely taken down for repair or while reefing. The sail configuration of a ketch allows for better comfort and stability when sailing downwind or on a broad reach.

The Ocean 71 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.51 - 2.61 meter (8.23 - 8.53 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Ocean 71 is 1.58, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 10.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Ocean 71 is about 639 kg/cm, alternatively 3579 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 639 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 3579 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

The l/b ratio for Ocean 71 is 4.33.

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 25.66

Sorry, we do not have sufficient statistical information available for this boat to provide a significant reliable analysis.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 106m 2 (1140 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
