For some reason children just love paper sailor hats! Grown-ups looking after kids love them too, because they're a cheap and easy way to occupy a young mind. Making a paper sailor hat is an arts and crafts activity that involves following directions. And when you're done you have a fun accessory you can actually wear.

All you need for this activity is a rectangular piece of paper. Use half a sheet of a standard newspaper to make a hat that will fit on your head. For a more colorful hat, you can use decorative paper.

Here's what to do:

  • Fold the paper in half lengthwise. Crease it and then open it back up flat.
  • Fold the paper in half widthwise and crease it.
  • Fold the top corners down so they form two triangles. Crease them very firmly so they stay in place. There is a rectangular section of paper below the triangles.
  • Fold the rectangle's front flap up so the bottom edge of the paper meets the base of the triangles. Crease it.
  • Fold the same flap up again, this time all the way up so it overlaps the two triangles. Crease the bottom edge very firmly.
  • Flip the paper over and repeat steps 4 and 5 on the other flap.
  • Open the hat and shape it with your fingers. You can make your hat a bit sturdier by adding a little tape to the ends, or to where the triangles meet.
  • Put on the hat and set sail on the seas of imagination!

⛵ Easy Origami Paper Boat (and Two Hats ▲ As a Bonus)

You will need one A4 piece of paper and obviously a good mood

Step 1: Let's Prapare the A4 Paper ⬜️

Let's Prapare the A4 Paper ⬜️

We start with the simple A4 paper sheet. If you've already created a few boats, you can start with a smaller size to add to your fleet.

We need to fold the paper in half and again in half, as shown in the picture.

Step 2: We Create a Little Triangle Hat 🔺

We Create a Little Triangle Hat 🔺

At this point, we have our sheet folded twice. In fact, we did the second fold to show where in the middle.

We unfold the paper and place it in a way that the loose ends face down.

The next step is to fold both upper corners diagonally down, as shown in the pictures.

Now, we move to fold the bottom part of the sheet.

Fold it up to the triangle's base created by folding corners in previous steps.

Next, we turn the sheet over to fold the other loose end. Similarly, we fold it up to the base of the triangle.

At this point, we have a little hat.

Step 3: Triagle Hat Becomes ... the Smaller Hat ◭

Triagle Hat Becomes ... the Smaller Hat ◭

We take our little triangle hat and "open it" from inside.

Put your hand inside the hat and start opening it.

Now, fold the spare corners of the paper sheet under the other one, as instructed in the picture. It will make the envelope forming smoother.

Now, you can keep "opening" the hat until it forms a flat diamond-like shape.

You should have the loose ends (corners) facing down.

Straighten and flatten it against the table.

Now, flip the bottom corner and fold it up.

Turn the whole structure around, flip and fold the other corner.

You should have another, smaller hat.

Step 4: Small Hat Becomes an Envelope ✉️

Small Hat Becomes an Envelope ✉️

At this point, you should have a smaller triangle facing the base down.

Open it from inside, similarly as in the previous step.

It should form an almond-shaped envelope.

When you take a look at the top of it (the upper corner), you should see the boat's sail in it ⛵️

Step 5: The Boat Inside the Envelope ⛵️

The Boat Inside the Envelope ⛵️

Carefully open the envelope by moving the two upper corners towards the sides.

Open the "sail" by creating some space at the bottom side.

Straighten the whole structure and make some adjustments if needed.

Congratulations captain!

You have your first boat in your fleet! Enjoy!
