Bimini Top InstallationSep 15th 2016 DIY - How to Install a Bimini TopIf your boat or pontoon craft has a bimini top you'll appreciate the shade it provides while you and your family are out on the water. It also folds back to allow catching some rays or when trailering or storing your boat. Over time, however, the fabric will degrade causing the need to replace your Bimini top. When this happens, know that Wholesale Marine has a wide selection of Bimini Tops for many pleasure craft and pontoon boats. Installing a new Bimini top is a job you can do yourself. While instructions will differ by manufacturer, we've prepared an overview for the DIYer to make the task easier: Step by Step Bimini Top InstallationIn addition to your Bimini Top, have the following on hand: - Waterproof caulk
- Tape measure
- Power drill and bits including countersink bit
- Manual screwdriver set
- Box-wrench set
This is a two-person task so ask a friend to assist. Position the Top - Fully extend the top and have your assistant hold it in place. This is so you can determine where the deck hinges will be installed. If replacing your top, these should already be in place, in which case reuse the holes and position. IMPORTANT: Measure to ensure that the deck hinges are exactly opposite each other and parallel to prevent binding when top is folded down.
Mount the New Deck Hinges - Mark mounting holes and ensure that the underside does not have any wires or hoses in the way.
- Drill holes and chamfer with a countersink to prevent gelcoat cracking.
- Bed the surface with a marine sealant to ensure holes are waterproof.
Install the Top and Eye Straps - Bolt main bow bases to deck hinges to erect the top. Extend the fore and aft web straps to align with web straps to form an M-shape on each side.
- Mount eye-straps horizontally: Mark, drill, embed and mount fore and aft eye straps with self-tapping screws.
- Attach snap-hooks to eye straps and adjust buckles evenly.
- We recommend purchasing a zippered boot for storage when not in use.
- We also recommend purchasing Bimini support stays . These provide additional stability for your top when underway and can tilt the top at a 45-degree angle when sun is preferred over shade.
Adjusting the Fit - If the top doesn't appear centered on the frame, pull the top to the side to center it.
- If the fabric is sagging in the front or rear, you may need to adjust the bows or straps slightly.
Wholesale Marine carries a wide assortment of Bimini Tops in numerous sizes and colors from top brands such as Gen3 Marine , Westland and Taylor Made . Bimini packages from these two brands come complete with the fabric, frame, and matching storage boot. You might have questions about which top is best for your boat or need assistance with your Bimini top installation project. Just call us (877) 388-2628. Custom-Made Hard Top BiminisI was wondering if there is any information regarding the protocol for replacing canvas with a rigid Bimini/dodger on a small 36-foot catamaran. I could not find a review of solid Bimini replacements. We have strong stainless steel frames. They are fixed with metal struts with no flexible straps. I do want to be able to see the sails from the helm and bulkhead mount. I want to be able to take advantage of roll up clear plastic front and side curtains. Most summers my current set stays in the rolled up position. They have since shrunk enough that they can no longer be fully snapped. I am looking for some material that is relatively light with strength. Is there any info on the polycarbonate tops such as the Hard to Top system ( www.hardtotop.com )? It seems to be light and strong, translucent. It comes in several panels to make up the necessary width. Is there any other material options that combine light weight and strength? The solid plastic systems seem to be very heavy per square foot. Bill Hudson Half Moon, Endeavour Cat 36 Because these are semi-custom jobs, we havent done a dedicated review of hard-top Bimini options, but this topic is definitely worth a closer look. Hard tops are so popular among warm-water cruising catamarans that they are standard on most of the boats you see today. Retrofitting one on an older boat, however, deserves some careful thought. Your concern about weight is on target. On a catamaran like yours, the weight of the top and the structure begins to add up quickly-as does cost. Because the Hard to Top System can be incorporated into an existing Bimini frame, it would appear to be a cost effective option, but wed be concerned about longevity of any plastic, and the translucent nature of the material seems to defeat the purpose of a Bimini, which is to create shade. A canvas Bimini offers many advantages over a rigid one, especially to offshore sailors. Importantly, you can fold it down or remove it in a gale, when the windage of a permanent hard top can affect the boats trim and balance. And Bimini tops almost always interfere with access to the mainsail. You can usually zip out a panel of a canvas Bimini, or remove it completely as needed. A hard dodger (as opposed to a Bimini) is less intrusive. Weve seen several custom , lightweight designs with low profiles that provide four-season protection and look terrific. For many boats, a good compromise is a hard dodger top (usually custom made), with canvas sides and clear vinyl front panels. We recently compared three types of popular clear vinyl glazing: Strataglass, OSea , and Regalite (see PS January 2014, How do Different Vinyl Types Compare? ). And this month we look at the long-term results of our canvas test. To get a better picture of the pros and cons of hard top versus a conventional canvas top, we will begin a survey of various custom shops that offer hard tops and dodgers and compare costs and materials. The more sensible hard Bimini tops that weve seen for catamarans incorporate lightweight cored panels and aircraft-grade anodized aluminum supports. Atlantic Towers in Bayville, New Jersey ( www.atlantictowers.com ) has a number of custom sailboat jobs to its credit. In Southwest Florida, we would recommend JTR Enterprises ( www.jtrmarine.com ), the family-run welding company in Gulfport that rigged the early Endeavours. Two companies we are familiar with fabricate hard-tops and dodgers using thermoformed ABS plastic: Cruising Hardtops ( www.cruisinghardtops.com ) and Shipshape Canvas ( www.shipshape.canvas.com ). However, as you pointed out, these tops are heavier than comparable designs using cored panels. Just about any region in the country is home to at least one custom welder/fabricator who can help you come up with design . The aim would be to keep weight minimal without breaking the bank. Wed invite any comments from owners who have retrofitted their boats with hard tops and have advice on this topic. RELATED ARTICLES MORE FROM AUTHORLeave a reply cancel reply. mimzy & company Sewing for your home and other DIY stuff. June 26, 2019 / diy projects , sewing projects DIY Bimini Top…lesson learned. After I cut one side, I folded my fabric in half lengthwise and cross wise and cut the opposite side of the fabric using my first cut as my guide. This way the front and back match exactly, since the metal bimini frame is the same front and back. Reader InteractionsI was wondering if you know how much fabric that it took for the top. It looks amazing. Hi Mary, It took about 1 1/2 yards. the fabric is 60″ wide. Get updates right to your inbox.....- Remember me Not recommended on shared computers

Very nice job. Can you break it down to tow with it? Still, very nice!! Link to commentShare on other sites, toddington111 25. You tow with it on, the pylon and the light sticks through the top and there's a hand hole to connect the tow rope. It's nice because it's so big that it holds the rope up so it doesn't hit the people in the back seat when it's slack. Posted December 2, 2020 Damn, nice work. Posted January 2, 2021 Looks great! How are you holding on the fabric/keeping it tensioned? I bought a large universal bimini and the fabric velcros on so I can't get it super tight and it collects water when it rains. I'm thinking of adding a few more hoops and making a cover I can tension to help shed water. Posted January 4, 2021 3 sets of zippers 2 in the front and 1 log one in the back in the rest of it's all velcroed around the bars. I also ran the tubing around the perimeter for my sprayers. I put a tee every place the velcro or zipper had a gap in it there's 8 spray heads around it run in 1/4" tube with a small ebay pump and a 5 gas water can. The can is more than enough for a day on the water Create an account or sign in to commentYou need to be a member in order to leave a comment Create an accountSign up for a new account in our community. Homemade bimini top- Thread starter Dybber
- Start date Dec 3, 2011
Help Support TinBoats.net:Active member. Has anyone made a homemade bimini top or t-top for a jon boat? I'm drawing up plans now but just wondering if anyone has had success with this. In my head now it will either be metal tubing or pvc. I'm thinking about starting with pvc and if I don't like it I can at least use it as a template to make one from metal tubing. Thanks in advance! Watch out for that thing catching wind when you are out on the water. With a larger boat it's not that big of a problem but with floating beer cans are pretty light weight and wind can create some real problems with them on the water. spotco2 said: Watch out for that thing catching wind when you are out on the water. Certainly creative! Nice job. Even if the PVC doesn't work out, you, as you already said, have the perfect dimensions all worked out for an aluminum substitute. Rich richg99 said: Nice job. Dybber, I'm interested about how your pvc frame is holding up. I'm planinng to make a diy bimini frame out of 3/4 pvc, but i have concerns about durability. i'd apprceiate advice coming from somebody with your experience. TIA One thing to remember is that White PVC is more UV sensitive than grey electrical PVC. Rich J.P. said: Dybber, I'm interested about how your pvc frame is holding up. TIA[/quote J.P. im surprised it has held up as well as it has. However, i fish mainly on a 10 acre private lake so I don't have to worry too much. I would definitely not trailer a boat with this top on it. It has some flexability to it which helps stand up so wind. Depending on what type of water you are fishing this top can be nice, especially with the low cost. This was made to be removable so if you want something more permanent or something able to withstand full speed o. The water i would suggest aluminum. Let me know if you have other questions, id be happy to answer! Click to expand... Here's another DIY bimini made out of 3/4" EMT alectical conduit. It holds up pretty well in freshwater, but less so in a marine environment, but it's still a cool project. I'm gonna be making a fold down bimini, so trailering is not a problem. The top will mostly be for hot windless days, i'd fold it down when it gets rough. kfa, thanks for the useful info. A canvas Bimini offers many advantages over a rigid one, especially to offshore sailors.
