San Diego Bay, also known as “The Big Bay” is a natural harbor and deepwater port located in San Diego County. It is considered to be one of the best natural harbors on the west coast. It spans 12 miles of coast and goes from 1 to 3 miles wide. Numerous resorts, hotels, and the San Diego Convention Center are adjacent to the Bay as well as several parks and nature preserves. In the northern part of the bay there are two commercial “islands” called Harbor Island and Shelter Island. They were built up from former sand bars and now hold hotels, restaurants, marinas, and public parkland. What’s cooler than seeing an aircraft carrier, how about stepping onto the aircraft carrier and roaming its corridors. Located just south of the Coronado-Broadway Pier, the USS Midway offers a history lesson even kids will like. Visitors can explore the carrier’s major areas, including the sleeping quarters, engine room, galley, jail and flight control. Every year on the Fourth of July a fireworks display called the Big Bay Boom is held over the waters of the Bay. Fireworks are launched simultaneously from four barges in the Bay as well as from a pier in Imperial Beach. It is one of the largest annual fireworks displays in the United States and is viewed by half a million people each year. With so much to do, its no wonder people spend hours exploring the San Diego Bay. It is a place you must experience for yourself.

Seattle, WA (January 21st, 2019) : Seattle Yachts, an established boat dealer and brokerage firm with offices in the Pacific Northwest and South Florida, has acquired Cabrillo Yacht Sales in San Diego. This announcement comes on the heels of Seattle Yachts opening their first east coast office in Palm Beach, Florida in 2018. Cabrillo Yacht Sales and Seattle Yachts share the same new boat brands, Northwest and Tayana.

“It was a natural fit for us to acquire Cabrillo Yacht Sales given that we share some of the same brands, but also because of Seattle Yacht’s growth strategy,” said Peter Whiting, Seattle Yacht’s Managing Partner. “Cabrillo’s location, which is on Americas Cup Harbor on N. Harbor Drive in San Diego, gives us penetration into a market where we already know our customers are either in or cruising to as a destination.”

A pop-up that combines food and fun, and — most refreshingly — doesn’t take itself too seriously, has found a permanent place to land in an unincorporated desert community about an hour’s drive from downtown San Diego in southeastern San Diego County.

Founded by San Diego-born artist Max Daily, Oslo Sardine Bar was inspired by Daily’s grandmother, who once worked in a tuna cannery. Bringing together people, performance art, and tinned seafood sourced from all over the globe, the pop-up was first launched at Bread & Salt in Logan Heights.

As its popularity increased, Daily — who studied puppeteering and whose day job is doing set decorating and props for the Walt Disney Company — toured around the country with Oslo Sardine Bar, eventually establishing a weekly residency in Seaport Village before shifting to deliver pre-ordered boxes of tinned fish during the pandemic.

More recently, Oslo Sardine Bar has been popping up at Mabel’s Gone Fishing and Bread & Salt, sometimes with longtime collaborators, the sea shanty-singing Barnacle Boys , or his customized claw machine which dispenses artist print sardine boxes.

A trained butcher who waited tables for 15 years at South Park stalwart Big Kitchen Cafe, Daily has been invited by the new proprietors of the Jacumba Hot Springs Hotel to set up shop in one of their other buildings in town. The former library will now be called the Jacumba Yacht Club, which Daily says he’s envisioning as a slice of Americana that harkens back to the roadside attractions of yesteryear.

Building it himself with furnishings that include old tables from Golden Horseshoe Restaurant in Disneyland’s Frontierland, the space will have a sardine bar serving tins and possibly wine and beer and an adjacent theater area filled with art and animatronics that will host performances of Daily’s sea monkey circus. Daily tells Eater that he hopes to have some version of Jacumba Yacht Club up and running in the next few months, and says that he plans to continue his pop-ups in central San Diego.

Historic yacht built 18 years before Titanic visits San Diego Bay

A historic yacht that once entertained several U.S. Presidents is stopping in San Diego. 

In this Zevely Zone, I toured the  'El Primero' . It's a miracle the old ship is still floating because it was built 18 years before the Titanic was launched in 1911. 

"It was the first superyacht steel hull made on the West Coast," said Captain Jeff Anderson. The old steamship is a rare chapter in American boating history. "The windows themselves, all of the bronze and whatnot, it's amazing," said Captain Jeff.

Built in San Francisco in 1893, El Primero was the premiere luxury steamer on the West Coast. 

"This here is all original from 1893, all of the doors, all of the teak," said Captain Jeff. 

He bought the yacht three years ago in Portland, Oregon for about $250,000. The ship needs a lot of work, so I asked if a quarter of a million dollars was too much to pay. 

"I don't know, I don't know," said Captain Jeff with a big smile and contagious enthusiasm.  

Although Captain Jeff is a home builder by profession, I have a sinking feeling, this is the biggest fixer of his life. The repair budget is taking on water. 

"It's new to me all of the time, I thought one number then I think another number. Some people are telling me a million," said Captain Jeff who is on his way to El Salvador to refurbish the boat, but first he has to get there.

"How do you steer this thing?" I asked. 

Captain Jeff laughed and told me, "Very carefully." 

Inside the wheelhouse, you'll find the helm and throttle. "That's full speed," said Captain Jeff showing me the old throttle. As he looks out the front windshield there is a huge hunk of wood blocking his view. "Pretty much a telephone pole," laughed Captain Jeff. 

If he wants to call the engine room three decks below there is really old telephone with a hand crank. "Hey there we go, that's perfect. It still works," said Captain Jeff.

Several former US Presidents traveled on the 120-foot yacht. 

The ship's first mate is Marshal Bowles. "I think it's amazing. I could not pass this opportunity up," said Marshall. He suspects the past presidential passengers were celebrated at dinner parties. He showed me an assortment of name tags he discovered, "We have Taft, we have Roosevelt, we have Harding," said Marshal.

The ship that once ran on coal, now has a diesel engine, that just goes and goes; much like the stories you hear about the ship. One such story that's been passed along states the ship was once lost in a craps game and went to a new owner. A bunch of new owners followed until Captain Jeff made an offer the last owner could not refuse. "Here I stand," said Captain Jeff who calls this the adventure of his life.

In El Salvador, he hopes to find affordable hardwood to restore the yacht. He is also hoping for more sunshine to work on the boat than they had in Oregon. Captain Jeff says the number one question he receives is what will he do with the boat when it's all done. 

"I don't know I could charter it, I could live on it, I could sell it, like I said I am going to finish it that's it," said Captain Jeff.

He hopes to potentially turn a quarter of a million dollar investment into a five million dollar pay day, but for better or worse this captain is going down with the ship. "Right, I am going to finish it. Hopefully not down, but I am sticking around with the ship," said Captain Jeff.

San Diego Yacht Club Electrifies Fleet with Purchase of Vita Electric Boats

September 23, 2024 – Vita Power announces the sale and delivery of two all-electric RIB boats, the Vita Seal and SeaDog , to San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) . SDYC is part of a growing group of yacht clubs in California that are purchasing all-electric boats for their club-owned fleets.  The SDYC Vita boats will support their year-round youth sail training programs, adult race management activities, as well as dockmaster duties around their marina. In 2010, San Diego Yacht Club created a new waterfront facility with an emphasis on creating a facility with “green and sustainable elements” and aspired to host “Green Regattas.” Along with generous solar power generation, SDYC Malin Burnham  Sailing Center    is a LEED Gold certified facility. J eff Johnson , SDYC’s Waterfront Manager offered “These boats fit so nicely with San Diego Yacht Club’s commitment to introducing ways to conduct our sport with minimum impact on the environment. To complement this now decade-old facility, we are proud to showcase the 100% Electric Vita powerboats as a robust tool for our junior sailing program and regatta management activities. We are eager to pave the way for other yacht clubs to understand the benefits of 100% electric propulsion and minimize the carbon footprint of our day-to-day yacht club operations.”

Johnson served on one of the 19 Vita Seal and SeaDog RIBS supplied by Vita in its capacity as Sole Supplier of Electric boats to the 2024 Olympic Games for the sailing events in Marseille (France) , and again aboard SDYC’s new Vita boats a week later straight off the trailer to serve the 2024 International Star Class World Championship . Duties included shuttling event officials, towing competitors, setting marks, and safety patrols. These events affirmed the capability of Vita’s boats to perform multiple tasks for long days on the water, day in and day out for almost two weeks.

The Seal and SeaDog offer up to 10 hours of continuous use capability , while DC supercharging allows for rapid top ups between shifts with a 20 – 80% charge taking as little as 30 minutes .   Instant high torque and Vita’s proprietary responsive controls also ensure complex manoeuvres can be executed with ease, providing maximal towing and pushing force even at low revolutions per minute.

This sale marks Vita’s ongoing expansion in the US market, following recent sales in California to Newport Beach Harbor , Bill Foss , and WestPoint Marina . Vita’s customers benefit from key incentive programs including the Commercial Off Road Equipment (CORE) Voucher Program pioneered by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
