Welcome to the online home of the International Six Metre Association. With their elegant lines, effortless sailing performance and exceptional international regatta circuit the Sixes have remained at the forefront of international sailing for over a century.
The class dates back to 1907 and the introduction of the International Rule, also known as the Metre Rule. Throughout the class’s history it has been a hotbed for technical innovation with the world’s leading yacht designers and sailors bringing often radical concepts and technical excellence to the fleet. An Olympic Class from 1908 to 1952, the Sixes were also frequently used as a development testbed for the America’s Cup 12 Metres. The rule was periodically updated to keep the class at the forefront of technical development, whilst at the same time honouring its extraordinary heritage.
The class has inevitably seen peaks and troughs of activity. The 1920s and 30s saw a frenzy of new boat construction, but the advent of the second world war brought a downturn which continued through the post-war austerity years. In 1975 the first of the “modern” Sixes appeared and so began the resurgence of this extraordinary class. Over 1200 6 Metre boats were built in total, of which some 450 are still in existence today.
Clever management of both the rule and the international class association by its dedicated officers and members has seen the International Six Metre return to its rightful place as one of the most exciting and important racing fleets on the planet. It brings together the elegance of the Classic Division with the cutting-edge development of the modern boats in the Open Division, in a regatta circuit that takes competitors to some of the most spectacular yachting venues around the globe. The camaraderie amongst the fleet is exceptional and the après-sailing lifestyle is as elegant as the yachts themselves.
Whether your interest is in sailing purely for pleasure, or racing at the cutting edge, the class has something to offer everyone, and it can be surprisingly good value for money too as the cost of a good second-hand modern boat is likely to be much less than you might think.

Immaculate restoration over several years completed in time for the 2009 Worlds where she placed 7th of 24 with 2 race wins. Totem has a spruce mast, boom, and spinnaker pole. Her winches are bronze and all running rigging is white. Her restoration has made her very sound and ready for many more years of competitive sailing. After a very successful Nordic career spanning 20+ years the current owner acquired the boat in Stockholm in 2004 and placed 13 of 28 at the 2005 World Championships in Sandhamn. The boat then had a major refit in Sweden by the yard of Thomas Larsson and Jonas Lorensson before coming home to the UK to be 14th of 25 at the 2007 WC at Cowes. She was built for Robert Meyer, who named the boat after he and his wife, Katherine (Bob + Kat). Bobkat II was part of the famous American team that went to England for the 1932 British American Team Races. The other members of the team were US 55 Lucie , US 56 Jill and US 60 Nancy . Bobkat II was restored to her original racing configuration at Cantieri dell Argentario in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy for her previous owner, Doug Peterson, the famous yacht designer. US 33 Clytie II - Sold October 2020 1927 Clinton Crane design built by Henry B. Nevins. Fully restored and ready for the next owner. Light Grey hull, buff deck, green antifouling, Varnished trim, Varnished spars, mast original in good condition. Reframed & mostly re-planked. ITA 64 Ciocca II - Sold July 2019 1948 Sparkman & Stephens design originally built in Italy by Baglietto. Lines and performance very similar to Goose and Llanoria. Represented Italy in the 1952 Olympics. Requires full restoration, but once finished will be competitive at the highest level. Now under restoration at Brion Rieff's yard. US 90 Fokus III ex. This beautifully lined yacht is built in Denmark in 1966 with great skill in mahogany on oak frames. The line plan is from the classic 6 meter class and shows many similarities to yachts like the Dragon. This type of sailing yachts has very good qualities and has long been the standard for racing yachts. The clear varnished yacht that we offer is in excellent condition. The cockpit is deep and offers good shelter for 4 to 6 people. The halyards are led through the hollow Oregon pine mast to winches on the mastfoot . Classic boat restorer and specialist Rexwinkel in Zwijndrecht (NL) restored the boat in 2003 with a new teak deck, coaming, foot rail and rudder. In 2002 there was also a Yanmar 10hp inboard diesel installed and the electronics were renewed.
The salon is cozy and convenient with two benches facing each other and offers a lot of space. At the entrance is a small galley on the starboard side navigation area with adjoining radio and switch panel. To port is a work surface and cupboard space. Besides the mast is a toilet, and there is storage space. The bow has a large double bed. The engine is under the cockpit floor.
For those sailors who go for most sailing fun the Dutch Nannie is a godsend. This is the type of yacht you sail with a big smile on your face. The maintenance is compared to a polyester yacht not too bad, the underwater hull requires the same maintenance, and the decks require new laquer only once per season. International Six Meter racing yacht built to Rule 2.
Designed by Johan Anker and built by Anker and Jensen in 1931.
She was built as the personal yacht of Johan Anker and in her he won the Scandinavian Gold Cup in Gothenburg in 1931. In 1932 she was sold to the great helmsman Magnus Konow who won the Gold Cup and the One Ton Cup. In 1933 she was sold to the UK and was converted for cruising around 1935 and spent much of her time after this on the Hamble.
In 2003 she was purchased by a well known member of the meter boat community, rebuilt and raced successfully at various events around Europe.
Purchased by the current owner in 2019 she then went through a major refit involving serious structural repairs and improvements, a complete new rig and all new systems. Clare Lallows yard on the Isle of Wight, together with an experienced yacht surveyor, completed a structural refit including new planking, frames and rudder replacement.
The yacht is now offered in full racing trim, optimised to a very high level and fully equipped for racing in the 6 meter series.
Top professionals have been engaged at all stages of the design and build to ensure the hull, rig and systems are as good as they could possibly be. The rig was designed in conjunction with various people including Tim Dean Consultancy Ltd.
Now under UK flag, this 6mR yacht is sailing under the sail number GBR31. Raced at the 2023 Worlds in Cowes and finished 11 th overall.
Offered for sale individually, but could be bought as part of a pair in conjunction with Abu. The systems, rigs and racing set up are identical on each boat making for exciting sailing as part of a team.

I had been talking to a customer at Boat Books where I worked about the problems of the world and what we could do to set things right, all the usual gripes about politicians, lawyers, and petty bureaucrats, you know the sort of thing.
My new friend told me that he was keen to establish a boat based outdoor youth training course to help change the ways of some of the local kids and had considered building a pair of brand new Naval Whalers.
Now the cost of one of these today is staggering and way beyond the budget that he could raise, so we sat down and worked out the key features of the clinker built 27ft Naval Trainer and I went home to translate those thoughts into a form both affordable and buildable by volunteer labour.
So, after a few months of phone calls back and forth plus occasional work at the drawing board, the 6 Metre Whaler emerged as you see here. Based upon the very successful yawl rigged version of the Navigator cruising dinghy, using the same simple plywood lapstrake over web frames and stringers structure. Traditional in her appearance, double ended, with two masts, and with enough sheer to be really pretty, she needs only about NZ $4000.00 worth of materials and about 220 hours of (competent) labor to complete a very nice little double ended craft which really looks the part.
She has a pair of straight alloy tubes as masts, the same sprit booms and proportions of sails as Navigator . There are three rows of reefs in the main, and if the weather requires, she will still balance under main only, or under jib and mizzen only, which gives lots of choices as the wind increases in strength. All spars fit inside the boat to reduce windage when rowing and making stowage when training much easier.
An outboard motor is inconspicuous in its well under the aft deck, and there is a steel centerboard that makes her well suited to the shallow harbor and estuaries where she will be based. But that ‘board’ is 85 kg of steel to steady her under what is in fact a powerful rig for her weight. Responses from owners tell me she is a a very fast boat under sail. And in case of really over-doing it, there is enough buoyancy built in to keep all of the occupants afloat while she is bailed out.
As a daysailer, one or two can handle her easily. I like these big open boats for the sheer feeling of space and comfort available in a relatively small boat, and it is in this role that the 6 Metre Whaler is most popular. There are quite a number now sailing as dayboats. One small group is chartering a couple and several are being used very successfully as cruising dinghies.
Just think of yourself gliding into a grassy bank at the head of an estuary somewhere, Partner at the helm while you stand by the mainsheet, number one Daughter up forward with the anchor line ready to pile ashore and tie up while small Son sits on the tent and groundsheet strapped in alongside the centrecase. You don't have to be home until Sunday night, and are looking forward to a weekend under canvas, voyaging during the day to as yet unknown channels, beaches and shellbanks, searching for the spirits of Susan, Tim and the rest of the Swallows and Amazons.
