Table of Contents
How long does it take to reach the bahamas by boat from miami.
The journey from Miami to the Bahamas by boat is both exciting and picturesque. The travel time largely depends on the mode of transportation chosen, as well as the specific destination within the Bahamas.
On average, it takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to reach Bimini, the closest Bahamian island to Miami, and up to 8 hours to Nassau, the capital.
As said the distance from Miami to various islands in the Bahamas can vary, and travel times depend on factors such as the specific departure point in Miami and the destination within the Bahamas.

Please note that these distances are approximate and can vary based on the specific route taken, sea conditions, and the type of boat used for the journey. It’s essential to plan accordingly, considering factors such as fuel range, sea weather conditions , and the capabilities of the chosen vessel.
Additionally, travel times may vary for different types of boats, including yachts, catamarans, sailboats, or ferry services.
How Long Does It Take to Get from Miami to the Bahamas by Motor Yacht?
Yachts, with their higher speed capabilities, can shorten the travel time compared to other types of vessels. A well-equipped yacht can cover the distance between Miami and Nassau in about 4 to 6 hours , making it an ideal option for those seeking a swift and stylish journey.
A motor yacht is the ideal boat to charter from Miami to The Bahamas if you’re looking for a short trip, for example for a 3/4 days charter vacation, particularly in terms of time, speed and comfort. In fact, motor yachts are faster then sailboats and catamarans, allowing you to reach The Bahamas from Miami in less time. Moreover, a yacht can take more direct routes, cutting down on travel time and reducing thee overall journey.
Each type of vessel has its unique advantages, and the decision should align with your priorities for the journey.
How Long Does It Take to Get from Miami to the Bahamas by Catamaran or Sailboat?
Catamarans and sailboats offer a more leisurely pace, taking approximately 6 to 10 hours to reach Nassau . The relaxed journey allows passengers to savor the beauty of the open seas and enjoy the gentle rocking of the boat.
Chartering a catamaran or a sailboat for your private vacation from Miami to The Bahamas offers a unique sailing experience, connection with nature and a more relaxed pace.
Relying on wind propulsion, catamarans and sailboats typically have lower operational costs, reducing the need for fuel to motor yachts and this can make the overall trip more effective. On the other hand, the trip could take more time.
Our recommendation is to charter the catamaran or sailboat for a minimum of 5 to 7 days, evaluating a one-way trip.
What Is the Closest Caribbean Island to Miami?
Bimini, part of the Bahamas archipelago, is the closest Caribbean island to Miami. Located just 50 miles off the coast, Bimini is a popular destination for boaters seeking a quick getaway with a distinct Caribbean flair.

Costs and prices, how much does it cost to charter a yacht from florida to the bahamas.
The cost of chartering a yacht from Florida to the Bahamas varies based on the type of vessel, duration of the charter, and additional services provided. On average, charter prices can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more per day, with luxury yachts commanding higher rates.
On top of the charter rate there are the taxes and the expenses, as fuel, food, drinks and ports. Depending on the charter duration and/or the terms applied, the expenses could be included or covered by the APA.
How to Calculate The Fuel Cost of a Motor Boat vacation to the Bahamas from Florida?
Calculating the fuel cost for a powerboat journey from Miami to various islands in the Bahamas involves considering factors such as the distance, fuel consumption rate (in gallons per hour), and the cost of fuel per gallon.
Here’s a general formula for estimating fuel costs:
Fuel Cost = ( Distance/Miles per Gallon) × Cost per Gallon of Fuel
Assumptions:
- The fuel consumption rate is in miles per gallon (MPG).
- The distance is in miles.
- The cost of fuel is per gallon.
Let’s use average values for illustration purposes:
- Distance: 50 miles (approx.)
- Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.5 MPG (assumed)
- Cost per Gallon of Fuel: $4.00 (assumed)
Fuel Cost = (50/1.5) × 4.00
- Distance: 185 miles (approx.)
- Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.2 MPG (assumed)
Fuel Cost = (185/1.2) × 4.00
- Distance: 100 miles (approx.)
- Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.4 MPG (assumed)
Fuel Cost = (100/1.4) × 4.00
These calculations provide estimated fuel costs for one leg of the journey.
For a more accurate estimate, it’s crucial to consider the specific fuel consumption rate of the powerboat being used. Additionally, fuel prices may vary, so the assumed cost per gallon is a generalization.
Keep in mind that fuel costs are just one aspect of the overall expenses involved in a boat trip. Other factors, such as maintenance, docking fees, and provisions, should also be considered when planning the budget for a Miami to Bahamas powerboat journey.
Is It Safe to Boat from Florida to the Bahamas?
Navigating from Florida to the Bahamas is generally considered safe, especially when following established routes and adhering to safety guidelines. However, it’s essential to monitor weather conditions, have proper safety equipment on board, and stay informed about any navigational challenges.
How Rough Are the Seas from Miami to Bahamas?
The seas between Miami and the Bahamas can vary in terms of roughness, depending on weather conditions. The route crosses the Gulf Stream, and while it is generally navigable, boaters should be prepared for occasional choppy seas, especially during adverse weather.
Do You Need a Passport to Take a Boat from Miami to the Bahamas?
Yes, a passport is mandatory for all travelers, including U.S. citizens, when crossing from Miami to the Bahamas by boat. It is essential to ensure that all passengers have valid passports before embarking on the journey, as entry into the Bahamas requires proper documentation.
Conclusion:
Embarking on a boat journey from Miami to the Bahamas is an exhilarating experience that opens the door to a world of azure waters, sandy beaches, and vibrant marine life. Whether you choose the swiftness of a yacht, the serenity of a sailboat, or the stability of a catamaran, meticulous planning, adherence to safety guidelines, and proper documentation will ensure a memorable and seamless voyage across the aquamarine highway.

Tips before you Charter a Yacht to Bimini Island
Before starting your private yacht charter to Bimini Island, The Bahamas , allow us to get you acquainted with this tiny but fascinating island. It’s divided in 3 small Islands: North, East, and South Bimini, with North and South Bimini being the largest. Also, the name is derived from these 2 Islands (Bi Mini).
The North side is only 7 miles (11km) long and 700 feet (200m) wide. You only need a golf cart to move around and enjoy the shops, restaurants, and bars.
With only 182 people living on the South side you will encounter South Bimini Airport, a few small hotels, and private homes you can rent. The island is famous for Big Game Fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
South Bimini is more relaxing whereas North Bimini has more activity and is recommended by us. You have options of Marinas where to dock, from Bimini Big Game Marina to Resorts World Bimini Resort and Marina.
WHAT TO SEE & DO ON BIMINI ISLANDS, BAHAMAS
SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELING AT SS SAPONA SHIPWRECK
The SS Sapona Shipwreck was a concrete cargo vessel built by Henry Ford during WWII. In 1926 it was destroyed by a hurricane. Today it still sits on the South side of Bimini Island, 3 miles from the shore. You can reach the Sapona shipwreck by your chartered boat and enjoy snorkeling reaching 20 feet deep. The beauty of the clear ocean makes it such a splendid landmark to enjoy a variety of sea fishes and sea creatures. Feel free to take amazing pictures while jumping off the shipwreck.
For scuba diving we recommend Neal Watson Bimini Scuba Center . They are professional, patient and can accommodate divers of all levels.
Quick tips:
- not recommended for pregnant women
- have your waterproof camera or GoPro handy
- make sure you have plenty of snorkel equipment onboard
- you do not need experience to snorkel
BIG GAME FISHING
All year round in Bimini is perfect for Big Game Fishing , however there are certain seasons for specific fish like Wahoo, mackerel, white and blue marlin, tuna, grouper, snapper, and barracuda. No wonder Bimini earns the title of “ sports fishing capital of the world ”.
The best way to enjoy this trip is on a properly equipped fishing boat with a professional crew to assist you and your guests, ensuring an authentic fishing experience in Bimini.
- game fishing chart to help for certain seasonal fish
- professional fishing crew is highly recommended
- plenty of food and drinks, and sunblock
- early morning fishing is the best time
WATER ACTIVITIES
Being a small island, Bimini is surrounded by unreal turquoise waters which makes it a perfect location to relax in the sun on the pristine white beaches. Or for the more adventurous, there is also kayaking , paddle board , snorkeling , scuba diving and jet skiing . Your chartered yacht is fully equipped for water activities, but if anything is missing our crew will make sure to get it to you in no time!
GOLF CART HOP ON, HOP OFF
Bimini is so small that renting a car is neither necessary nor an option. You can make your way around North Bimini in less than 30 minutes by golf cart. There are more than 10 golf cart rental companies on the island, making it easy to rent one for the day. Do as the locals and take a short, leisurely drive to the corner store, or to eat at one of the many restaurants (pass by Bimini Big John’s Bar & Grill) , head to the beach, or try your luck at the casino. The locals are incredibly nice and welcoming, always ready to give advice for the best local food and live music. There is also a daily ferry service between North and South Bimini, though you will find more to do on the North side.
Enhance your experience
Whatever the reason for your boat charter, we will be sure to make it special! We offer a broad range of additional services to make your time spent on one of our yachts unforgettable. Think of us as a concierge service , available to meet the needs of your special day.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO BIMINI
Typical departure from Miami is early in the morning around 9am, for timely arrival in Bimini to clear customs ( passports needed ). You should be ready to pick up your golf cart at the marina by 2pm. We will make sure marina dockage and golf cart are reserved so you can enjoy and relax from the moment you arrive. Drive around the Island and pass by Joe’s Conch Shack have their famous conch salad and you may even catch them cleaning and prepping it (see picture below). Conch is the most famous seafood dish in Bimini so you may also want to try Stuarts delicious conch salad.
You can go around the island and stop by the beaches for a swim, stop by a shack and enjoy a local Kalik beer while enjoying the view of pastel colored wooden homes and breathe in the fresh ocean air. Once you finished exploring it’s time to go back to the marina, relax on your boat and get ready for dinner. You may choose a fancy dinner at Sabor restaurant inside the Hilton Resorts World Bimini or a local laid back option like Edith’s Pizza , which serves a lot more than pizza. Finish your night at the Casino at Hilton Resorts World Bimini. Or, if it’s a weekend, you may relax by the marina listening to live band music. Or, one of our weekend favorites is Big John’s Bar & Grill, which was just remodeled in April 2017
Let’s get the engine started and move the boat towards the area where dolphins like to hang around. If we’re lucky, you will be able to see some and even swim with them. We just ask that you keep in mind they are wild mammals and you should always take precautions.
We will mostly likely stop by the SSS Sapona Shipwreck by South Bimini, where you may enjoy amazing snorkeling . If your chartered yacht is equipped with a jet ski , this is the time to hop on one and take it around the shipwreck, jump in the water to snorkel and capture beautiful pictures to share back home.
On 2-night trips, we can take you to a private island called Cat Cay , located only 10 miles away from Bimini. Here visitors are permitted to moor for no more than 24 hours. Enjoy some fine cuisine at Nauticat Restaurant or Bu’s Bar for a more relaxed atmosphere.
The island is managed by Cat Cay Yacht Club and non-members may only visit accompanied by members. For a private tour for membership inquiries or more information, please visit their website.
CHOOSING A BOAT
Now let’s choose the perfect boat for you . It all depends how many guests are joining you and if you are planning to sleep on the boat or in a hotel.
We can help you choose from a medium size vessel like a 54’ Sea Ray Sundancer with 2 rooms or a 64’ Azimut with 3 staterooms. For fishing aficionados, we have a 50’ or a 60’ Hatteras fishing boat so you can enjoy Big Game Fishing.
Do you have a bigger budget in mind? We recommend a 75’ Sunseeker Manhattan which is ultra comfortable and luxurious equipped with all the amenities you may need. If you decide you rather stay overnight in a hotel than your chartered vessel, we can recommend one of our partner’s resorts.
Fishing charters are permitted for no more than 6 guests by law.
45′ Sessa C44
55′ Sea Ray 510 Fly
54′ Sea Ray 500 Sundancer

Winter temperatures average 69.2° F (20.7° C) during the day and 50° F (10° C) at night, making it the preferred time of the year for tourists from up north to escape the cold and soak up the sun while enjoying the cool, dry air. It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year.

Should You Charter a Yacht From Florida to The Bahamas?
The answer is YES & NO; depending on time, budget, and Bahamas destination. These variables change with each yacht charter. So the real question is: How do you maximize your time while getting the most out of your budget?
These breathtaking islands are only a short distance from Florida, making them the ideal cruising destination for your next vacation or holiday. We can help you to plan and execute your perfect yachting vacation , avoiding some common pitfalls that many of our charter clients have fallen victim to.
In this article, we will discuss the best way to get to popular Bahama destinations when planning a yacht charter Bahamas vacation to ensure your vacation is nothing but smooth sailing.
Bimini, Bahamas
Yacht Charters from Fort Lauderdale or Miami To Bimini, Does it Make Sense?
The short answer is yes, you should leave Florida to Bimini. It rarely makes sense to meet your yacht in Bimini.
Bimini is an excellent choice for a charter destination leaving from South Florida especially Miami, it’s only 50 nautical miles away and easy to get to with straight shot across the Gulf Stream. The best time to cross the Gulf Stream is in the summer months when the water is calmer. It’s also stunningly beautiful.
If you’re chartering a motor yacht, it is possible to go from Miami to Bimini in under 3 hours, making a day trip a possibility. However, a day trip can be very cost inefficient, especially considering most of your day will be cruising across the gulf stream and not enjoying the beautiful Bahamian waters.
Find out more about luxury Miami yacht rentals so you can get a head start on your trip! CharterLux has plenty of yachts to choose from and can help you throughout the entire process.
We recommend a 3-day charter to get the most out of your trip.
Note: We do not recommend day trips on holidays when customs can be backed up.
Yacht Charters Abaco & Exuma Bahamas
Yacht Charter from Fort Lauderdale or Miami To Nassau
The answer is no, you shouldn’t charter a yacht from South Florida to the Bahamas (except Bimini), but the answer isn’t short.
If you’re looking to charter a yacht in the Bahamas for 7-10 days you most likely would be visiting the islands of the Abacos and Exumas. Most charter yachts depart from the capital of the Bahamas (Nassau) mainly for the reasons below.
Things to Consider When Chartering a Yacht From Florida to Bahamas:
Financial considerations.
Sales Tax – Sales tax in the Bahamas is 4% versus 7% in South Florida [Palm Beach County (West Palm Beach), Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) and Dade County (Miami)].
Price of Fuel – Fuel prices are around half the price in Florida than in the Bahamas.
Amount of Fuel – The amount of fuel the yacht will consume to get to the Bahamas & back to Florida could supersede the repositioning fee it will cost you to relocate the yacht.
Time – Miami to Nassau is 160nm, which means it would take one full day to arrive in Nassau, costing you a significant amount of money in fuel and wasted time cruising to your destination. The amount of time (money) it will take cruising to the Bahamas and back to Florida will most likely supersede the repositioning fee charged by the yacht owner and can take two days out of your Bahamas yacht charter.
Cost Savings Example:
- 100ft+ yacht that charters for $50,000 a week ($7,142 a day)
- Cruises 16knts @ 120gph fuel burn
- 10hrs (each way) x 2 = 20hrs
- 20hrs x120gph = 2,400gal
- 2,400gal x $3.50gal (est.) = $8,400
- Lose two days of time traveling open ocean that could be spent in the Abacos or Exumas – $7,142 a day x 2 =$14,284
- $5,000 Repo fee (est.)
- $8,400 fuel + $14,284 in charter time – $5,000 repo fee = $17,684 in savings!
Legal Considerations
Liability – Most yachts will have to charter off of a Demise/Bareboat charter agreement if departing from U.S. waters. Departing from Bahamian waters you can charter off of a Time Charter Agreement, limiting your liability as a charterer.
Vessel Status – Foreign flagged vessels that have not paid their U.S. duties by law cannot charter from U.S. waters.
Accessibility
Mother Nature– Weather can affect the amount of time it takes cruising to your destination. It’s never fun to sail through rough weather. Once you are in the Bahamas your captain should be able to alter your itinerary to best avoid rough seas.
International Airport– Nassau has an international airport which has direct flights from Fort Lauderdale and many more cites.

Sailing from Miami To The Bahamas
Miami to Bahamas
Here at Yacht.Vacations we’re often asked about how to charter from Miami to Bahamas. Is it possible? Is it easy? Is it expensive? Is it worth it?
We’re here to answer all of your questions – and those you never thought to ask!
Here’s our guide to chartering from Miami to the Bahamas.
In case you weren’t aware, Miami is a prime spot for boat rentals. There are several busy marinas with a wide variety of boats to choose from. It’s also home to the Miami International Boat Show, drawing 100,000 visitors each year.
With so much choice, it may seem a bit of a minefield when it comes to finding and booking the perfect boat. That’s where we come in – we’re able to search and compare different providers and fleets to ensure you snag the best option for your trip.
Miami airport to the marinas is also a breeze, with several transport options. And of course we’re on hand to advise.
All aboard!
Once you’ve boarded your new home from home, it’s time to set sail.
The Bahamas lie east of Florida, with the nearest point, Bimini, being only 50 nautical miles away. Bimini is comprised of three islands: North, South and East Bimini. Even if it’s not your ultimate destination, it’s well worth stopping by en route.
Crossing the Gulf Stream out of season isn’t always an easy passage. In summer, the waters are calm and beautiful, with rarely more than 1-2 feet of swell. Out of season, you could experience swells of up to 10 feet. If you’re an experienced and adventurous sailor, you may relish the challenge! Otherwise, allow your captain to expertly guide you across the passage. Approximately 50 recreational vessels make this journey each day, so it’s perfectly safe and possible.
How long will it take?
Of course, this depends on your boat! With a motor yacht, you can reach Bimini in under three hours, and Marsh Harbor or Nassau in a day.
A vessel averaging six knots will take most of the day to get to a decent harbor in the western Bahamas. You may need to allow a couple of days to reach The Abacos or northern Exumas. Again, the powerful Gulf Stream is your main contender here. We recommend erring on the side of caution when it comes to factoring in your timings.
If you’re unsure about the best type of boat for your trip, just give us a call. We’ll be happy to talk through your plans and make recommendations.
What awaits me in the Bahamas?
Well… a paradise of relaxation, adventure and exploration to start with! The Bahamas are a 5,358 square mile archipelago. Approximately 700 islands and cays, and 180,000 square miles of ocean.
These islands are known for the stunning, clear waters that surround them. They’re a haven for swimming, surfing, fishing or simply lying on the beautiful beaches.
Those who make the crossing are greeted by hot, dry weather, with year-round averages above 80°F. Sea temperatures are around 70°F in winter, and reach over 80°F in summer. Summer can bring some wet weather, so that’s worth factoring in when you plan your trip.
The Sea of Abaco is definitely not to be missed. This area is loved by sailors from across the world for its clear warm waters. It’s also home to the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef – a vibrant paradise of marine life. Definitely a bucket-list experience for divers.
On Exumas , you may be greeted ashore by the famous swimming pigs, as well as friendly iguanas and sharks!
Nassau, the capital, offers endless incredible attractions. Rum distilleries, museums, water parks, beaches can all be found here, with something guaranteed to keep each member of your group enthralled.
What should I pack?
Well, this does depend a little on your personal preferences when it comes to charter vacations, but as a guide, we’d suggest the following:
- Your passport, with current Bahamian stamps and travel dates
- A fishing permit for Bahamas waters, if you’re a keen angler
- Sun protection, in the form of sunscreen, long-sleeved shirts and pants, and polarized sunglasses
- Provisions, if you’re bareboating. Make sure you’ve got enough food and water to see you across the Gulf. Of course, if you’re going all-inclusive, your crew will have this all taken care of
- Snorkel, diving and fishing equipment, if not already aboard your boat.
First of all, give us a call! We’re on hand to discuss your charter ideas, search and compare different boat options, and find the best possible option for you. Checkout our Bahamas Destination Guide for more information, and we’ll be delighted to clear up any remaining questions about the Miami to Bahamas charter experience, and are dedicated to making your sailing dream a reality. Here’s your chance to get away from the mainland with an adventure to bimini..
Bimini Bay Beach Resort Casino Bimini Bay Marina Bimini Shipwreck Snorkeling and Scuba Swim with Dolphins Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth
When you charter a yacht to the Bahamas , you’ll visit a chain of tiny islands situated just west of the Bahamas that are merely a three hour boat ride away from South Beach, Miami. Bimini is rich in history, culture and is home to many landmarks that can be visited only by boat. Known for its laid back lifestyle, crystal clear water, pristine white sandy beaches and picturesque nature trails, visitors are pleasantly surprised with the many activities waiting to be explored. If you’re a diver or snorkeler, Bimini offers some of the finest aqua experiences around. Swim up close with wild dolphins and stingrays, or explore the age old remains of a mysterious shipwreck.
One of the most well known tourist destinations in the area is Underwater Bimini Road; an unusual rock formation that dates back centuries and is believed to be the remnants of an ancient human built road. Located near Bimini Road is what some people believe to be Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth. Locals call this pool of water the Healing Hole which lies at the end of a network of underground tunnels that pump cool, fresh water during outgoing tides.
Explore this beautiful island chain on a Chartered Yacht Vacation that you’ll never forget. We recommend spending two days in Bimini to experience the full atmosphere of the island and landmarks. We also recommend booking a stay at Bimini Bay Resort & Marina (www.rwbimini.com) for awesome restaurants and a Casino to try your luck!

Video shows FWC helicopter pilot saving swimmers by hovering in front of alleged DUI boater
Just seconds away from a potentially devastating collision, pilot chris simons flew into action, by briana trujillo • published september 11, 2024 • updated on september 11, 2024 at 4:52 pm.
A helicopter pilot for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission prevented tragedy by stopping a boat driven by a man who was under the influence and headed for a group of swimmers in the Florida Keys, authorities said.
It happened on Sept. 7, as hundreds of swimmers competed in a charity swim to benefit the Alligator Reef Lighthouse.

The FWC helicopter was supporting the swimmers by air when a boat started heading straight for them, officials said.
“Despite repeated requests from law enforcement, the vessel operator, Thomas Michael Reichert of Naples, did not change course,” FWC said in a news release.

That’s when FWC pilot Chris Simons flew into action.
Just seconds away from a potentially devastating collision, Simons was able to stop Reichert by lowering the chopper and hovering about 20 feet in front of the suspect.
"At that point, the captain was maybe 15 to 20 yards away from the swimmers and I knew I had to do something," Simons said in a statement. "I pulled my helicopter right in front of the boat to block him from hitting any swimmers or kayakers."

Other boats moved in to help stop Reichert's vessel, officials said.
Footage of the pilot's heroic actions were released by FWC on Wednesday, along with a video statement from Senior Officer David Moss, who was on the helicopter with Simons.
"They definitely got very close and if it wasn't for the helicopter and the other boats it definitely could have been bad," Moss said.
Reichert, 55, was found to be boating under the influence, officials said.
He was also allegedly “in possession of 12 wrung spiny lobster tails. Separating the tail from the body of a spiny lobster is prohibited in state waters.”
“All too often, FWC officers respond to incidents where divers and swimmers are struck by vessels,” Maj. Alberto Maza, FWC South B Regional Commander, said in a news release. “Thankfully, from his unique vantage point in the air, our aviation officer was able to anticipate and prevent a greater tragedy."
Reichert was later arrested and is set to be arraigned on Sept. 24.
