Classic Cruising Sailboat for Sale by Owners – S&S Stevens Custom 40

March 25, 2024 compass heading 180° comments 0 comment.

Are you dreaming of a sailing adventure? Are you looking for a comfortable and safe cruising sailboat? Our beautiful Sparkman & Stephens classic is now for sale by the Ionian Sea in Greece.

S&S Stevens Custom 40 from the year 1983 – s/y Aina – is a wonderful cruising boat for a small family, a couple, or a singlehanded sailor. She’s a seakindly, moderate to heavy displacement sailboat built for the big seas and ocean crossings. She has a solid GRP hull, a practical cutter rig, a comfortable centre cockpit and super functional living spaces.

This link will take you to a more detailed description of the boat in our blog – at the end of the text you will find more particular specs and a full equipment list.

Click the thumbnails to open the photos in a bigger window! The captions contain more information.

We have owned Aina for over six years and have always taken excellent care of her, safety first, refitting and equipping her along our adventure.

Our own journey started in Finland in the summer of 2018 and took us down along the European coast, across the Biscay, through the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea, all the way to the turquoise waters of Greece. Now s/y Aina is for sale by the Ionian Sea in Greece (Messolonghi / Lefkada). The new owners can start their own adventure in this beautiful, diverse sailing area with a well-equipped boat – there’s enough to see in the Mediterranean for a lifetime. And if sailing around the world is your dream, Aina is totally up to it.

Many of the refit projects have been described in detail in the blog posts, so get a deeper look at Aina, and pick up a few ideas for your own adventures in the numerous travel stories!

The boat comes with everything from cooking pots, pans and dinnerware to a comprehensive tool selection for maintenance and repair, including all power tools for sanding, polishing, wood, grp and metal work. There are plenty of spare parts for the engine, the outboard and most equipment and devices. There’s a full set of scuba gear for cleaning the underwater hull, two folding bikes for shopping trips, and, naturally, a hypalon dinghy with an outboard motor.

The boat has been surveyed for insurance purposes in the summer of 2022. We’re happy to send a copy of the report on request. There’s also a comprehensive list of all maintenance, repairs, installations and equipment. All user manuals are available and all maintenance has been meticulously recorded.

The asking price, with all equipment and a clean hull, is 78 000 €.

Don’t hesitate to contact us and ask for more information!

The Stevens 40 is a 40.58ft cutter designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built in fiberglass by Queen Long Marine since 1982.

The Stevens 40 is a heavy sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is reasonably stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is average. There is a good water supply range.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

S&S design #2134. An earlier version was called the NORTH STAR 80/20. Another built to his design was the SWIFT 40, built in KOREA.

. I can find little info. Anyone with enough knowledge to point out problem areas to look out for. Well equipped and maintained with A layout newer and much new . Looks like she's ready to sail. Want more data before I decide to look at her and possibly order a . Thanks.

Big brother is the 47 and that is now the 47 basically same boat and the newer 49. boat that points well with a nice sea motion and an advanced for the day made of quality materials and workmanship. Lots of new updates. Decent tankage.

What do you think? Thanks. For SE and sailing for now.

I have ever been on. I absolutely loved how she moved. She was easy to drive and kept good speed thru somewhat turbulent conditions of that day.

The and were all fine quality materials (boat built, I believe, in Taiwan). She was a bit demanding on though - and plenty of varnished trim above .

If S40 is from the same stable, I would definitely go for a test ride followed by a .

Good luck, tell us how it went!

Cheers,

Here's what I have so far. I can get the specs etc. I just can't find anyone who can tell me things that a buyer would like to know otherwise. Actually I was going to post some links but they go to other sailing sites. Is that permissible to do here?

We were pointed in the direction of a S&S Stevens 40 and I'm having problems finding much on this boat. Nothing here or other sites I can find and even on the S&S main site. They do have the plans on the blog site. I can't blow them up or copy them to even see it though. This boat has the A plan and I really like it for my wife and I to live on some and be able to handle it with either of us or both. Nice aft stateroom for a boat this size. She has lovely lines for a small boat (IMO) and I've read she is comfortable and sails well. We plan to sail coastal waters in the SE and also the Caribbean. I believe the draft on this boat is 6 ft with no centerboard on this particular boat. Does anyone know more about these boats? I'm pretty sure the bigger boat designed initially was the 47 and then the Hylas 47 which is now a 49. Anything in particular to look out for when surveying it? Any suggestions or comments?

The bottom line is an accredited survey. This will determine the value and condition of the vessel, to which you have leverage over the owner. Do not accept an owner's survey, have one done by your representative (surveyor). Many surveyors will do both owner and buyer surveys. I don't, you just get the straight up truth with me, but some will "spin" the condition toward the person paying for the service, which I think is less than honorable, which is why I get paid up front, because you might not like what I have to say. There's a few versions of the S&S 40 (S&S 1767), the first was a CCA classic which was modeled after and earlier racer (S&S 1738). Yours is S&S 2413 (my assumption) intended as a 1 ton under IOR (1982) Value on this is good, considering it's a few decades old. They can range from a just trying to escape the landfill condition (a few grand once the hardware is stripped) to high 5 figures, depending on condition, equipment, inventory and maintenance.

I thought that I posted a message yesterday, but don''t see it. This was my first time and if this is a duplicate, I apologize. My wife and I are looking at a Stevens 47 as a possible liveaboard and coastal cruiser. We''ve also looked at Morgans, Endeavours and Hardins in the mid 40''s, all center cockpits. I found no independent reviews on the internet re: Stevens 47. The Stevens 47 generally are more expensive and I wonder if it is worth the extra cost. I would appreciate any information on the Stevens or any advice concerning the others I mentioned. We will initially be living in the NE US and live aboard year round with short coastal cruises from there. Eventually, we will do the snow bird thing. Any help would be appreciated.

stevens 40 sailboat

For the most part the Stevens 47, the Stevens are a better boat in almost all ways than mid- 40 foot range Morgans, Endeavours and Hardins. While some of the differences are subjective and relates to your own tastes and goals, in real tangable ways, the Steven''s offers better build quality with better materials, in most cases a more sophisticated hull design, offering better sailing performance and comfort of motion and nicer detailing. Whether that is worth $70-90K more is hard to say. Beyond that, as you get up to the $200K range there are a lot of really great boats out there. Jeff

Jeff, Thanks for the input. That''s exactly the kind of information I was looking for. John

Three years ago my wife and I purchased a 1981 Stevens 47. It was a bit of a project boat, but we couldn't be happier. It can be considered a true trade wind boat. While it may not point like a 'J', it really loves a good reach. We do a lot of weekend trips and week long vacations out of Portsmouth RI and usually like to have guests on board. That is where the 3 cabin, 2 heads come in handy. Close quarter maneuvering is an issue with the modified full keel. We are in a very tight marina, and before adding a bow thruster, we had to spring the boat out of our slip. The boat has a very solid construction. This past year Sail Magazine ranked it as one of the 10 best blue water boats ever. It has a seakindly motion and nice wide side decks. Bridge clearance can be an issue depending on where you would keep it. The rig is 65' off the water. Our boat has a Harken sail slide system. It would be a real load hoisting the main without it. Tankage is excellant. 100 gallons for fuel and 250 gallons for water. Three sided engine access plus good access to all other systems.

stevens 40 sailboat

Dennis..since we are here anyway on this old thread...I have a question. The Stevens 47 is similar in exterior looks to the Hylas 47 which I believe he also designed and which we sailed and loved on a charter back in the 90's. I have never seen a Steven's 47 in person. Have you seen both boats and if so can you comment on any differences?

stevens 40 sailboat

I too have been looking at the Stevens 47. There was one for sale at Rouge Wave in Annapolis that sold and they have another one for sail down in the Carib. The one in the Carib is going 30K more than the the one sold here in the US. http://www2.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?&units=Feet&checked_boats=1407042&lang=en&slim=broker&&hosturl=roguewave&&ywo=roguewave & Good luck Fair Winds Melissa

Stevens 47 vs Hylas 47 The Stevens 47 was the predecessor to the Hylas. It is my understanding that they sold the molds to Hylas when they stopped producing the Stevens. I sailed on a Hylas as part of a charter around 1995. That was the boat that got me interested in a center cockpit design.

The Hylas and Stevens 47 are the same Sparkman & Stephens design built by the same yard in Taiwan, Queen Long Marine. Queen Long hired S&S to design the 47-footer for them right around 1981. Bill Stevens of Stevens Charters imported most of the original hulls, and they named her the Stevens 47. Later Queen Long Marine rebranded her as the Hylas 47 along with introducing other Hylas models. The real difference between these two is the rig. The Stevens has a beefier rig. The Hylas 47's are high quality as well but just a little less robustly equipped. These Stevens models have become cult boats and rightly so. The performance of these whether Hylas or Stevens is legendary. The hull shape and keel-rudder configuration make them surprisingly stiff and fast boats, well-balanced in any condition. A Hylas 49 model with a raised sheerline and sugar scoop stern is the current evolution of the 47.
