Winner of the 1970 Earl’s Court Boat Show award for cruisers, this attractive and traditional-looking long-keeled offshore cruiser was designed by Holman& Pye. She had a very unconventional interior: the saloon was aft, at the foot of the companionway under the doghouse, and the galley was forward, opposite a two-berth cabin. There were six berths in all (seven including a pilot berth). Right forward was the heads and a second two-berth cabin. The 42hp Mercedes diesel was amidships. However, many were semi-custom built, so few models will conform to the standard. All were substantially built by Bowman to Lloyd’s +100A1 standard, on hulls moulded by Seaglass. Most were ketch-rigged, but a few have the Bermudian sloop confi guration. There was also a lifting-keel option. Her hull form is rather beamy and she dislikes being pressed under sail, but her large wheel takes the labour out of steering. The original review in 1970 described her as ‘the sort of cruiser that a buyer is likely to keep for many years’. They were built in limited numbers and as such are soughtafter on the secondhand market.

LOA 10.97m (36ft), LWL 5.15m (26ft 8in), beam 3.45m (11ft 4in), draught 1.67m (5ft 6in), displacement 8,437kg (18,600lb). Price guide: £25,000 to £35,000. YM Test Report June 1970.

Review of Bowman 36

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat equipped with a ketch rig. A ketch rig is generally considered easier to handle, because the sails are smaller, and because it can sail on most points to the wind with one sail completely taken down for repair or while reefing. The sail configuration of a ketch allows for better comfort and stability when sailing downwind or on a broad reach.

The Bowman 36 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.73 - 1.83 meter (5.68 - 5.98 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Mercedes-Benz diesel engine at 42 hp (31 kW). Calculated max speed is about 5.8 knots

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Bowman 36 is 1.71, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Bowman 36 is about 187 kg/cm, alternatively 1052 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 187 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1052 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Seller's Description

Price just reduced and still negotiable for the right buyer!!!

Turn key, ready to cruise!

It’s with very mixed emotions that we’re selling our classic sailboat to upgrade to something bigger for our growing family. She’s ready to live aboard and/or take you anywhere in the world.

Bowman, now Rustler Yachts, is one of the highest quality yacht builders in the world. The Bowman 36, once named “The Bentley of the Sea” is representative of the highest standards of custom yacht construction. The term Bluewater gets thrown around for just about anything that floats these days, but Cloud is an ACTUAL blue water cruiser designed to cross oceans in safety and comfort. In fact, the Bowman 36 is one of the few boats approved for the Golden Globe Race for circumnavigation. Couple that with drop dead gorgeous lines and tons of modern upgrades including an interior refit to make her more viable as a liveaboard, Cloud truly has it all. Every boat is a compromise, but shes as close as youll find to the perfect balance in solid offshore performance yet still comfortable in the slip or at anchor.

In 2019 an interior refit was performed by the legendary Bayliss Boatworks where an interior cabin housing 2 pilot berths was rebuilt into a comfortable dinette which also converts into a berth. Padded paneling was added throughout the interior and the v- berth was also completely rebuilt to accommodate two people instead of one. All three deck hatches were replaced with brand new low-profile Vetus hatches. From 2019-2022 she underwent an extensive refit. We’ve put over $100,000 into bringing Cloud back to life with a modern touch in comfort and safety features.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A keel/centerboard version was available as well a number of different interior configurations.

But it's with very mixed emotions that we're selling our classic sailboat to upgrade to something bigger for our growing family.

A recent survey conducted in December 2022 found only one major issue - her exhaust system was outdated and corroded, so in January 2023 we had it completely replaced.

She's ready to live aboard and/or take you anywhere in the world.

More about the Bowman 36 (by sailboat-cruising.com)

The Bowman 36 was designed by Holman and Pye, a British naval architecture firm that also created the legendary Oyster yachts. The Bowman 36 was first launched in 1974 and was produced until 1988, with about 60 boats built.

The boat has a fiberglass hull and deck, with a long keel and a skeg-hung rudder. The rig is a masthead sloop, with a roller-furling genoa and a mainsail with lazy jacks. The cockpit is spacious with a wheel steering and an aft locker. The boat also has a bowsprit, which adds to its charm and character.

The interior of the Bowman 36 is cozy and elegant, with teak woodwork and brass fittings, and can accommodate up to six people, with two cabins and a saloon. The forward cabin has a V-berth and a hanging locker, while the aft cabin has a double berth and a seat. The saloon has two settees that can convert into berths, a folding table and a navigation station. The galley has a stove, an oven, a sink and a fridge. The head has a toilet, a sink and a shower.

The Bowman 36 is not only beautiful, but also practical and functional. The boat has ample storage space, with lockers, drawers and shelves throughout, while opening ports and hatches provide good ventilation.

The Bowman 36 is a joy to sail, with excellent performance and handling. She's stable and balanced, with good speed and maneuverability and can handle various weather conditions, from light winds to heavy seas, she's also easy to sail single-handed or with a small crew, thanks to her simple rigging and reliable systems.

She's ideal for cruising long distances or exploring remote destinations.

Hey everyone, I found one for sale in the BVI's that, from the photos looked pretty nice and was within our budget. Does anyone have any experience with them? We are planning on using her to sail Caribbean and potentially farther after a year or so of exploring. Curious to know what everyones opinion is with them, how they sail, how they handle weather and such. Thanks!

bowman 36 sailboat data

No direct experience, but are we talking about 'Tilly Whim'? If so she seems a nice example. She'll be 'small' and tight by todays' standards and may well be challenging to maneuver in close quarters, but the dark blue hull looks good. Appears to have been well looked after, and has 'been there and got the Tshirt'...

A dark hull may be a bit hot in the Carribean.

Thanks Barquito and Faster for the comments. @Faster - Yes the Tilly Whim was the one I was talking about. Owner has had her for last 30 years, and from the photos, she looks well kept. I do worry about the dark hull generating a lot of heat, but she is quite a beauty. She's a bit high on price in terms of our budget($30k roughly), but she's already located in the BVI's. I do wonder about the beam though. I do agree that she would be a bit narrow, however as long as the layout is good, it wouldn't bother me too much as we are coming from a Bristol 27(non-liveaboard though).

Well built solid boats. If i remember correctly the engine is offset making it a challenge to maneuver in tight quarters. Will feel like a modern 30 footer below. Sent from my Pixel C using Tapatalk

With a beam of 11'4" she is not exactly narrow. If someone had her for 30 years, she must be a good girl. As to the price: see what is included in terms of gear and sails. That stuff ain't cheap.

Actually, if I typed the numbers in correctly, the L/B ratio is about the same for the Bristol 27 and the Bowman 36.

While an 11.4 ft beam is, indeed, not particularly narrow, it wasn't until the 90s that that beam was kept as you moved further aft. The narrow ends limited the volume below. Also I don't think this boat has any sort of quarter/aft berth, so again, less voluminous below (living space) than a more recent boat. However that trades off against lots of cockpit storage, generally. But she's pretty and she's 'already there'.. two bonus points.

I have one in fact we have just put her on the market after 30 years ownership. Very sea kindly boats Mikonda travelled many miles in all sorts of weather. Not good in very light airs as she is sturdy and well built. Enjoys a good breeze. We put a bow thruster in as with a long keel and high bow not the easiest in marinas. Hope this is of help

Where is your ad? I might be interested. See my thread here: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/boat-review-purchase-forum/287353-looking-32-35-offshore-boat.html

Thanks for the info. Great looking boat. Too bad it is in UK :/

Broker's Comments

A very rare example of the classic Holman and Pye design, which won the London Boat Show cruiser award in 1970 Built of GRP to Lloyds 100A1 specification, in 1971 by Southern Boatbuilders Ltd., Designed for comfortable long-distance cruising. She has synthetic teak decks fitted 2015 and an abundance of varnished teak throughout she really is a delight to be aboard. Her hull was completely re-sprayed in 2013 amongst a number of further mini refit items over the last couple of years. She has the added benefit of a lifting keel, so at the end of the passage it allows you to creep into beautiful uncrowded places few boats of her size can go.

Used – Rival 36

Mention Rival yachts and most sailors think of fairly heavy, pretty, bulletproof affairs designed for crossing oceans in safety, with high speed not featuring particularly high on the priorities list. Rival Yachts, in its first iteration, was started by yacht designer Peter Brett in 1967 with the Rival 31, the first one of which was popped out of her mould in 1968. This was quickly followed by the slightly extended 32 and then later with the well respected 34, 41 and 38. The first 36 was launched in 1980, making it the sixth and final Rival from the company in its original form.

The Rival 34 in particular had gained many admirers in serious yachting circles following Wild Rival winning the OSTAR transatlantic race on handicap in 1976. The race had been a windy one and the 34 had triumphed in the main due to an ability to plug relentlessly to windward in conditions that had caused many other crews to ease off and yachts to retire. The 36 was launched with this triumph fresh in the minds of the boating public, to fill a gap between the slightly fuller ended aft cabin 38 and the bulletproof 34. The 36 was a fairly successful design for Rival with 78 hulls being launched from the Woolston, Southampton factory. Later, in the 1980s, Rival Yachts’, like many other boatbuilders’ stories became more complicated, performing and being subjected to various takeovers and mergers featuring Bowman, Starlight and Rustler, all illustrious names in their own right when it comes to world girdling cruising yachts.

The 36 was designed from the start with a lift keel variant, the 36C (for centreboard), which has a slightly shorter mast. The lift keel is a GRP foil that operates within an external stub keel with a flat bottom and grounding shoe for drying out safely alongside a harbour wall or similar. It is raised and lowered using a deck mounted winch. The 1984 model we are looking at here has the alternative deep fin keel of encapsulated lead. There was a third shallow draught variant offered with Scheel keel. The 36 was offered with sloop rig as standard and cutter rig and furling headsail were offered as options.

Entering the rich confines of the saloon, the first thing that strikes any visitor is the Rival trademark keyhole cut bulkhead. It’s actually quite a clever structure as it adds most of the additional strength of an extra central bulkhead without stealing too much natural light from the cabin. She’s constructed to Lloyds 100A1 standards and her solid feeling hardwood faced ply joinery bears this out. Maximum headroom is 6ft 3in (1.91m) declining slightly to 5ft 1in at the forward bulkhead. While small saloon ports and the hardwood finish are always going to create a darker atmosphere than in some more modern designs, I found it was actually quite bright and uplifting for a 25 year old boat. The saloon table is soildly constructed, amply fiddled and on some boats can be dropped to provide an occasional double. There are serious looking triple cup positions for pipe cots above the saloon berths, and the berths are a usable 6ft 3in (1.91m) long. Stowage under these berths is significant, thanks in part to the water tank being situated in the root of the keel and accessed through inspection hatches in the sole.

This is a real ocean eating plodder. She won’t be setting anybody’s pants on fire, but there are few 36ft boats available new today with the same cocktail of ocean going layup and design detail, and possibly none with the same unpretentious quality of finish. These boats justifiably hold their value very well, though it is a sad indictment on sailing snobbery that they would make more buyers’ shortlists if more of them had come with wheel steering.

For • Solid lump of quality boat • Heavy weather comfort • Proven seakeeping ability

Against • Would you get on with a tiller? • Not quick, especially in light airs

Man and his dog rescued from disabled boat 25 miles out to sea as Hurricane Helene fast approached

man rescued.jpg

The United States Coast Guard has rescued a man and his dog as Hurricane Helene fast approached them when his boat became disabled and started taking on water 25 miles out to sea, officials said.

The sailor and his dog were on a 36-foot sailboat on Thursday when the boat started taking on water, leaving the man and his canine stranded in the ocean approximately 25 miles off of Sanibel Island with no help or support nearby, according to a statement from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater released early Friday morning.

“Coast Guard crews responded to the boater’s distress call and rushed to the man’s location, approximately 25 miles offshore from Sanibel Island near Fort Myers,” authorities said. “A successful rescue attempt was made and the unidentified sailor and his dog were saved and brought back to land.”

Officials have not disclosed why the man was out to sea while small craft advisories and hurricane warnings had already been issued in the area as Hurricane Helene was expected to make landfall.

Hurricane Helene has officially made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida as a major Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds late Thursday night, with the storm touching down near Perry, Florida, just east of the mouth of the Aucilla River.

Hurricane Helene marks the first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Florida's Big Bend Region since at least 1859.

Just after Hurricane Helene made landfall over Florida, the number of customers without power crossed the 1 million mark and outages have extended into neighboring Southern states with over 46,000 customers without power in Georgia and over 12,400 customers without power in North Carolina, according to powerouttages.us.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp confirmed that two people were killed during Hurricane Helene's passage into Georgia overnight, bringing the storm's total death toll to three.

Kemp said he and his family were "saddened to learn of the loss of two lives in Wheeler County this evening. As we join their families in mourning their deaths, we urge all Georgians to brace for further impact from Helene, remain vigilant and pray for all those affected."

Earlier, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a press conference late Thursday that one person was killed on the I-4 highway near Tampa when a sign fell on a car.

  1. BOWMAN 36

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising.
