Boat Scrapyard is the one stop marine chandlery shop where we list all of the boat parts we recycle from end of life boats. We also have brand new items which are surplus chandlery stock. The aim is to have the biggest selection of new and used boat parts for sale around.
Our sister company Boatbreakers, source end of life boats through their marine recycling network. Many of the boat parts we sell will be extremely hard to get hold of due to the boats they come from no longer being in production.
The Boat Scrapyard team will always try and price each item for a fair price. Unless an item is brand new it will very rarely be anywhere near the full retail price. So there should be plenty of boaty bargains!
We want to hear from you. As we expand our Marine Recycling network we want you to tell us the parts you are looking for . Another service we want to offer is pre-ordering parts from boats that we will be having delivered soon.

SAILBOAT WRECKING YARD
Used boat parts, project boats, trailers, i would like to start out by saying thank you to all the customers we have had at our location this year. i have met some wonderful people. i can no longer try and look for individual parts for people at this time via phone or email. we have 60,000 square feet of parts totaling over 150,000 items that are used and unique. there is no way to search for parts and items for all the requests we get a day. i know that people do not want to come all the way to lynden and waste a trip, but we are getting bogged down with over a 100 requests a day to look for parts and pictures of items, this is just not the kind of business that you can shop by phone or emails. i am sorry but it has become overwhelming and we are getting lists of major items like masts , sails, booms and they will be posted soon but we can no longer search for every item that people need individually. our primary focus has to be for people that have made the trip and are standing in front of us., thanks, jeffery hackler, you can check here or our “ sailboat wrecking yard ”, facebook page for updates, i am currently restocked on lead ingots and downrigger balls, our days of operation are, wednesday, thursday, fridays only 1-6pm , you should always call before coming out to the yard as i am currently operating it alone., 210 duffner drive, lynden, wa 98264, 360-739-8748, we can no longer recommend associated boat transport, marysville wa, due to new ownership and current business practices.
The Sailboat Wrecking Yard was born from a real need in the coastal environment as well as the sailing community. We reduce, reuse, and recycle derelict boats. The result is a melding of benefit to harbors, marinas, boat yards and private individuals.
Our labor force is minimal.
Our scope is broad.
It is strongly recommended that you call
360-739-8748
before traveling a distance to view our merchandise.
Our inventory ranges from masts complete with rigging to flare containers.
Our inventory page is a work in progress and reflects a cost/time/benefit issue. It is by no means complete.
We are working on it.
Be patient .
We do NOT take returns. We DO ship smaller items. We DO take credit cards. (2.75% fee)
Come see us!
It is our hope that you will come find rare and valuable parts and equipment. Our donor boats may have left behind just what is needed to improve viable boats at an affordable price.

Buy USED boat parts and save a fortune

Find great deals on used boat parts at boat salvage yards, marine consignment stores, and online
If prices for new boat parts make you cringe, you can buy used boat parts for less than half the retail price . The trick is knowing where to look.
Where to buy used boat parts?
There are four best places to find used boat parts and marine supplies:
- Boat salvage yards (boat junk yards)
Marine consignment stores
- Online stores
- Salvage auctions
Be sure to check out the maps below to find used boat parts near you.

Boat salvage yards and boat junk yards
If you enjoy bargain hunting, you’ll love picking over parts at a boat salvage yard. A marine salvage yard is a place where wrecked and salvage boats go to be taken apart and recycled. Often these companies also specialize in boat removal and offer boat disposal services.
How it works
Boat junk yards buy boats that are damaged beyond repair (or no longer wanted) from boat owners and insurance companies for rock-bottom prices. Sometimes these boat scrap yards will specialize in a certain type of boat (e.g. yachts or power).
The boat junkyard then dismantles and sells the boat salvage parts to customers.
At “pick and pull” yards” you’re set loose in the yard with a screwdriver, free to climb all over the boats and pull off the pieces that strike your fancy. The deals can be outstanding.
For example, I once spent a pleasant afternoon stripping 30 lbs of Harken blocks and cleats off a grounded race boat and paid only 25 dollars for my bag of booty. That hardware could have easily cost me 10-20x at a chandlery.
Very often the boat junk yard staff can help you find the right part. If you’re looking for a specific part, call ahead to inquire about availability.
What you’ll find
If it’s attached to a boat, you’ll likely find it at a salvage yard! Engines, water pumps, winches, blocks, doors, hatches, booms, masts, etc.
Sometimes you’ll find items like used sails , lines, and electronics but many owners will strip out items that can be resold before delivering the boat to the salvage yard.
- Boat salvage yards are the place to go for the best price. Their cheap parts can make your boat repairs and projects a lot more affordable. Plus, there’s no shipping cost.
- You can physically inspect the part before buying it
- Boat junk yard staff will know the history of the boat and how this will affect the quality of the parts. For example, boat parts from freshwater boats tend to be in better shape than parts from saltwater boats. How the boat was damaged may also affect your decision to buy a part. For example, you might not want to buy rigging hardware from a boat that lost its mast. However, buying a boom from a boat with fire damage might be fine.
- You get to be on the boat recycling front lines and pull everything apart yourself! It’s great weekend entertainment.
- You often have to remove the boat parts you want from the boat (bring tools)
- Parts are still attached to the boat and therefore not organized like they are in a chandlery. This makes it difficult to find and compare parts
- Unlike new parts, used marine parts may be less durable, faulty, and there is no warranty
- Boat salvage yards often have very few staff so don’t expect to get advice on your boat project

Boat shopping tip! If you’re looking for a good deal on a whole boat (not just parts), be sure to check out how to find cheap boats on Craigslist.
Good things come to those who rummage! If you’re lucky enough to have a marine consignment store in your area (see map below) you can save money on boat parts.
Minney’s Yacht Surplus is a MUST-visit for any sailor traveling through Southern California
Marine consignment stores buy or consign boat parts from boat owners and liquidation facilities and then resell them with a small markup. Sometimes stores will let you trade in your old boat parts.
For example, we once walked into a boat consignment store with three old sails we didn’t want and came out with a captain’s chair, a spinnaker pole , and $100 in cash. It’s a great way to turn your boat clutter into useful gear.
Anything you’d expect to find in a chandlery including great deals on electronics, sails, rigging, and hardware.
- Marine consignment stores have affordable prices and no shipping cost.
- Staff only accept consignment items of a certain quality so you won’t have to wade through junk for hours
- Items are organized throughout the store making them easier to browse
- You have the opportunity to trade in your old boat parts
- You can physically inspect the parts before purchase
- Knowledgeable staff offer fast service and can advise you on boat parts and your projects
- Though inexpensive, parts cost more than they would at a salvage yard
- Occasionally consigned items have prices that are set too high by the owner of the item
- There are no warranties or returns
Find marine consignment stores near you
Search for boat consignment stores near you. This map includes stores from Good Old Boat’s awesome list of boating consignment stores
Online stores for used boat parts
While most of the marine consignment stores above, also sell items online, there are a few organizations that specialize in online only.
Search online to find a wide selection of parts and have them shipped right to your door.
Be sure to read the fine print and understand who the seller is. Sometimes it’s a company selling parts, in which case the parts have usually been inspected and tested. In other cases, the parts are being sold by an individual, in which case there are really no quality standards.
You can buy anything online that you’d find at a chandlery but keep in mind it will be a lot more expensive to ship heavy parts like anchors, chain, or propellers.
- Buying online is cheaper than buying at a chandlery
- Accessible and convenient
- Easy to browse and compare parts in well-organized categories
- Sometimes parts are inspected and tested before the sale
- It’s possible to find highly specialized and discontinued boat parts
- More expensive than marine consignment stores and boat salvage yards and there’ll be shipping costs.
- There’s no way to personally inspect parts before the purchase
- No in-person staff to provide advice, though often staff are available by email or phone
Buy second-hand boat parts online from these websites:
In the last couple of years, many of the online boat part vendors have shut down their websites.
Shipwreck Salvage seems to be one of the few sites left standing. The company is run by a semi-retired mechanic and sells freshwater parts worldwide.
If you know of anyone who is selling boat parts online and has a large inventory, let us know in the comments and we’ll add them to our list.
Of course, you can always find boat parts in your local area (and beyond) by searching buy and sell sites like eBay, Kijiji, and Craigslist.
Salvage boats for sale at auction
There is one last place you can buy cheap boat parts – at auction! If you’re planning a big project (like outfitting a boat to sail around the world or restoring a classic boat) you may want to find a salvage boat for sale, buy it, and part it out yourself.
Look for police and other auctions in your area or search an online auction site like AutoBidMaster, YachtSalvage.com, Copart , and SCA.
Find out when an auction is taking place in your area or use one of the online auction sites listed above. Place your bid and watch carefully as the bidding closes.
From storm-damaged sailboats to outboard motors to police-seized sport boats, you can find anything at auction, often at a more than reasonable price.
- Buying a whole boat and parting it out will be very cost-effective because you’re buying in bulk
- In the case of a live auction, you may be able to physically view the boat
- You can sell any parts of the boat that you don’t need and recoup some of the purchase price
- Buying at auction can be exciting!
- It’s hard to know the quality of individual parts as you won’t be able to inspect them in detail
- You’ll need somewhere to store the boat while you’re parting it out
- Parting out a boat is time-consuming
- Once you’ve finished parting out the boat there will be disposal costs
Tips for buying used boat parts
- Be precise . Before purchasing, make sure it’s the right part and compatible with your specific boat’s make and model. Before calling a parts department, see if you can find a serial number for the part you’re replacing. Also, take careful measurements of all the key dimensions and check them against the listing.
- Inspect thoroughly . When buying used boat parts, it’s essential to inspect them thoroughly. Request detailed photos from different angles and ask the seller about the condition, history, and any known issues with the part. If possible, arrange to see the part in person before finalizing the purchase.
- Buy from reputable sources . Your best bet is to purchase used boat parts from reputable sources such as established marine salvage yards or dealers. Professional sellers are more likely to accurately describe the condition of the part as well as provide great service and fast shipping.
- Check for warranty or return policy. Ask about any warranties or return policies offered by the seller. A limited warranty or return option can provide you with some peace of mind in case the part turns out to be faulty or incompatible with your boat.
- Ask about service history . Inquire about the service history, especially if it’s a complex part or system like an outboard motor or stern drive unit. Knowing how the part was maintained, and if it received proper care, can give you insight into its overall condition and potential longevity.
Remember, while buying used parts can save you money, it’s important to balance cost savings with the quality and condition of the parts. Take your time to make an informed decision.
Happy used boat part shopping!

BOATS & SAILS
Often, a boat is left with someone who cannot be its caretaker, for various reasons. While many companies charge $100 per foot just to pick up and dispose of the boat in a landfill, adding thousands of pounds of waste to the environment, we take a different approach. We aim to reuse and recycle 80% of each boat we take in. Our removal pricing is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but we are usually very affordable, and often even free, for sailboats. This is how we maintain a majority of our inventory. We prioritize reducing, reusing, and recycling not just for boats, but in all that we do including sails through our sail donation program!
Anchors & Oars not only has boat parts for sale, we also offer bags, shirts, hats, and more. Tell other people where to find the best used boat parts with your swag!

Boat Salvage Yards Near Me
One of the best ways to save money on boat repairs is to find a boat salvage yard. A boat salvage is where wrecked boats are stored and dismantled. Working parts of the are sold for use on functioning boats. I will share with you my experience about the boat salvage yards near me and tips for getting the most value out of your trip visit.
Map of Boat Salvage Yards Near Me
For “Boat Junk Yards Near Me” or “Boat Salvage Yards Near Me”, see the map below…
Interesting Relevant Stat on New Boat Sales…
If there is anything we are good at in the US, it is making boats. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association , new boats reached nearly 320,000 units sold in 2020, up 13% compared to 2019 according to NMMA’s December New Powerboat Registrations Report. That is a 13 year high in sales.
Why are new boat sales relevant to a boat salvage article? With new boats going in the water that means more junk, abandon boats, and parts for us. What happens to all the old boats. There are an estimated 35-40 million boats, many from the 1970’s and 1980’s that are reaching their end of life. Where do they go and how can we take advantage of the parts on them?…
How Boat Salvage Yards Near Me Operate
Most boat scrap yards operate on a local level…meaning they don’t have national chains. These boat yards buy boats from people who feel they are too damaged or in some cases, they just no longer want the boat. Some boats are in fine condition while others may be beyond repair or the boat owners just felt the repair cost wasn’t worth the money. Maybe the vessel has simply reached it’s end of life.
In some cases , the salvage will pick up the boat on a trailer, but owners also can drop off the boat at the scrap yard. In addition to boats , some yards also will take jet ski’s, wave runners, sea doo’s , and other personal watercraft vehicles. There are also salvage yards dedicated completely to Yachts, sailboats , or smaller vessels like pontoon boats .
A boat salvage in some instances will purchase a boat from an insurance company. When an insurance company replaces a boat in a total loss claim or has salvage charges it is responsible for the one that no longer works or perhaps has sunk and needs to be re – raised. This makes for a great relationship between the insurance company and the boat scrap yard. The scrap yard gets a good price on the boat, which they can sell the used parts off of and the insurance company recoups some of the money from the claim.
One of the biggest issues that boat salvages and dismantlers have to deal with is fiberglass hulls . There is really been no good solution for it other than a landfill, but there is starting to be talk about how to repurpose it and partner with cement kilns.
Some Have Organized Rows, While Others Are Hard to Navigate
While some salvages are a mess, many have the yard well organized which makes finding used boat parts much easier. In addition , you may also want to ask if they have an online inventory of their boats by brand, type, and year. This can help you find the new and used parts you need much faster. The boat junk yard will be able to tell you exactly where a specific boat is located on the lot and possibly if it has the part you are looking for. In most boat yards, like yacht junkyards the boats are arranged side by side.
Many yards have parts just thrown in other boats, like the one below. If you are looking for a part, you can sometimes check the boat next to it to see if it was thrown in.
How Used Boat Parts Are Handled…
Some boat junkyards don’t just put wrecked boats straight out to the yard, they pre-strip them down and put the functional parts in a warehouse. This streamlines the process when a customer is looking for a specific used part. Not all junkyards work like that though, some send the customers out to the scrap yard to remove the needed parts themselves. Either way , if you are looking for a specific part it’s best to call ahead and ask if the part is available out on the lot, that is how the boat salvage near me operates.
You may find in your scavenging that you won’t find a lot of outboard motors. Motors are sometimes sold to companies for rebuilding and then resold with a new warranty. You can find a lot of good used boat parts though and whatever is not sold gets sold out as scrap metal or other materials. If you are looking for a motor, it’s best to try a specialized boat motor salvage yard . They will have parts available via a warehouse or online. You will find not only motors but inboard and outboard parts for repairs.
If you are thinking about trying to salvage an entire boat and not just parts, you should know the risks associated with buying a boat with a salvage title .
Salvage Yards That Buy Boats and Yachts
Getting rid of a junk boat can be a headache. Many people abandon boats, because of the sheer expense to dismantle them. There are also few laws around abandon boats as compared to abandon cars. This is where selling your boat to salvage is a good option.
Before selling salvage boats or yacht to a place that buys junk boats , there are some things you need to know. First , you should consider the cost of repairs. Get an estimate to see if the damage to repair is worth paying for. It might be worth repairing and reselling independently.
If you decide to sell it make sure you remove all your personal belongings from the cabin and any compartments, You need to cancel the insurance and the registration and you will need the title to transfer full ownership to the scrap yard. it’s important to cancel the registration yourself, some boatyards will send you an administrative bill for canceling your registration on your behalf. If you don’t pay the bill they will report you to a credit agency. This is what the boat junkyard near me does and they mean business.
Before you call a marine junkyard you should know the value of your vessel even if it’s wrecked. You can use the Kelly Blue Book for Boats to assess it. Knowing the value will help you negotiate a reasonable price for the boat. it’s imperative that you are honest in describing the vessel and what is wrong with it. You may be asked to provide pictures and proof.
Negotiating Tips for Getting Max Value from Your Boat
- Call more than one salvage yard to find out what they will pay for your vessel
- If they are picking up your boat, don’t let the trailer driver renegotiate the price with you…he is trying to skim money off the top
- Don’t sign over the title until you have everything you agreed to in hand
- Never give money to the trailer driver, negotiate the cost of the tow in with the price of the vessel
The best part about selling your boat to salvage is that you can make money off something that you no longer want or perhaps functions.
Other options for Disposing of a Junk Boat
Some people think they can just abandon their boat, but that is actually finable up to $3000, plus the cost of removal and dismantling. If you need to get rid of a boat and don’t want the headache or cost anymore there is a great article on NADA with suggestions on what to do with it .
What Kind of Used Boat Parts Near Me Will I Find
It really depends on the salvage yard . In my experience, these businesses are located closer to a body of water naturally have a higher amount of parts available. Salvage boat yards located inland have less parts available, but often have a higher quality in my observations over the years.
Advantage Buying Spare Boat Parts
The best reason to buy used parts and marine supplies is because you can save a lot of money if you have to make repairs. Many used parts are still in great condition since scrap yards need to operate under state government regulations. This gives you some assurance that the used parts you are purchasing are of decent quality.
Disadvantages of Buying Spare Boat Parts from the Junkyard
Sometimes it’s not all glory in purchasing used parts. You may find some part you purchased doesn’t last or is not durable. There is a popular saying “Cheap is expensive”. You may find that the part you purchased has 1000’s of hours on it and is nearing its end of life. Unfortunately , spare boat parts don’t come with a warranty.
Lastly , if you are scavenging through a junkyard for boats you may spend the whole day looking and never find what you are looking for.
Want to Experience a Boat Salvage Yard?…
If you have never been to a boat junkyard, it’s hard to imagine what you are getting into. The video below is a very simple look at what you will see at marine junkyards. You can see total wreckage and parts laying all around, plus completely intact vessels. it’s kind of amazing to see this stuff if you’ve never seen a boat graveyard…
Scams By Boat Salvages
Most companies are honest and do everything in fairness. You may find a few that try a few dirty tricks.
Two Common Boat Junkyard Scams:
Delayed Payment: Never agree to deliver your vessel and accept payment later. Get an agreement written down with terms of payment. Some companies will try to get your vessel and then renegotiate the price with you after it is no longer in your possession. Don’t let them trailer it or tow it, until you have an agreement in place and money in hand.
Your Boat is Worthless: They may try and tell you that your vessel is worth nothing. This is just a negotiating tactic to get it at a cheaper price. It’s IMPOSSIBLE for it to be worth nothing to a salvage. Remember they will sell the parts off if it and whatever is left will sell for scrap.
Boat Scrap Yards Near Me – Wrap UP
The yard by you may operate slightly different than what I have detailed above, they operate on a local level so there is a lot of variance between companies. You should always be careful when dealing with salvage yards for boats. There are plenty of companies out there so if you can’t get what you want from one, simply call another Boat salvage yards help the environment by recycling.
They provide a great service to redistribute marine parts that were considered junk back out into the public for use. Imagine how much junk would be around if boat junk yards didn’t exist. This is what I have learned from the boat boneyards near me.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do boat salvages work.
Marine salvages purchase wrecked vessels that are worth less than the cost to fix. They sell any remaining functional marine parts for use in working boats. They get their inventory from various sources including private owners, insurance companies, auctions, and the government. Some provide dismantling services and work closely with scrap businesses and recyclers. Some of them have both a store and a boat yard.
How Do I Get Rid of an Old or Damaged Boat?
There are 5 main ways to get rid of an old or damaged boat: Salvages, cash for boat buyer, donation, auction house, or selling it independently. What you don’t want to do is abandon it or sink it. That can cost you $3000 in fines plus the costs of removal and dismantling.
Do Scrap Yards or Dumps Take Boats?
It is possible that your local scrap yard or dump will take the boat, but there are a few things you should be aware of. If they can you likely have to pay a fee for disposing of it and that fee may be dependent on the size and weight of your boat. You will want to call ahead to find out if they can do it. Many of these places have hazardous waste restrictions and may not be an option for you.
How much are Aluminum Boats Worth in Scrap?
To figure out the value of an aluminum boat in scrap metal you must multiply the weight of the boat X today’s market price for aluminum by the pound. For example , if aluminum is $0.60/pound and your boat weights 200 pounds you will get $120.
How Much Does it Cost to Get Rid of a Fiberglass Boat?
Costs vary based on the boat’s size. For a small dinghy , it could cost $350, but a 52 foot fiberglass yacht could run $2500. Your average 32 footer would probably cost around $1700. A good portion of the cost is the transport to the disposal facility, so if you could get it there directly, you could save up to 30%.

The 6 Best Sources for Sailboat Parts and Supplies
This blog is big on saving money while doing restoration and improvement projects. I’ve literally saved a boat load of money by doing almost all projects myself, buying gently used parts, and shopping for bargains online. As of the time I wrote this post, I’ve saved over $10,000 compared to the suggested retail price of the parts and supplies that I actually used. If that sounds incredibly high, consider Chip Ford who has spent over $40,000 on his C-22 and is now trying to sell it. Boy, I hope he doesn’t have regrets. Good luck, Chip!
Even though I’ve saved 72 percent on average off of retail prices, that also means that I’ve spent a lot of money on the projects you read about here. You can do the math to estimate how much I’ve spent. It’s actually slightly higher than that because I’ve made some minor improvements that have no corresponding savings. So to me, being stingy doesn’t mean being cheap or a miser. If I were truly cheap, I wouldn’t have a boat at all! It just means not paying more than I have to.
In some of the posts here, particularly those that use specialized parts, I mention the sources of the parts and supplies that I used, but in most posts I do not. That’s primarily because in most cases, you can buy the parts and supplies from multiple sources.
Most skippers have their favorite sources for parts. You probably do too and so do I. But if you’re new to sailboat restoration and improvement or just to certain types of projects (such as canvas or electrical), you might be wondering what are the best sources. If that’s you, the following list will give you a jump-start on finding what you need at the best prices.
This is my favorite sources list. These sources are where I’ve actually spent the most money. I’ll give a short description of the types of parts and supplies that I buy there and why. When I buy new retail parts and supplies, I usually try to group as many items together from the same source to take advantage of free shipping offers or to lower the shipping cost of each item.
Understand that this list is very subjective. It’s based almost entirely on the lowest prices. These sources do not necessarily have the best choice of every type of part, the best customer service, return policy, lowest shipping costs, etc. Also, these are general parts sources, not specialists for things like rope, wiring, canvas, wood parts, and so on. I’ve also made many one-time purchases from other suppliers. If there’s enough interest, I might write a separate post about specialty suppliers.
So without further ado, I present a countdown of my 6 favorite sources of parts and supplies in classic Tonight Show ascending order:
What boat owner doesn’t know about West Marine ? Their biggest advantage is that there’s probably a store near you. Second is they carry just about everything you could ever want. Their prices are usually the highest that you’ll find for most items but they hold frequent sales (usually during the holidays) on popular items like life jackets, electronics, and maintenance supplies that make them worth considering sometimes. For their best prices, watch their website home page for Fantastic Friday sale items each week.
One thing that I can wholeheartedly recommend buying from West Marine is rope. Once or twice per year, they put all bulk rope on sale around 40% off for one day. That beats everybody else by far and you can buy top quality rope for less than even lower quality brands. I’ve bought all my running rigging this way and saved hundreds of dollars.
For sailing gear, I’ve found that it works best to order items online and take advantage of the free shipping to my nearest store. I get a phone call the following Friday telling me that my order is in and I can go pick it up without worrying whether the items I need (or enough of them) are on the shelves.
The stores are run by knowledgeable, experienced, and friendly staff in my experience. I shop there when I can’t wait for shipping from online retailers, I just need a few fasteners to finish a project, or if I only need one or two items and the extra shipping costs to order them elsewhere cancel out the price savings. For example, when I ran out of varnish for my exterior teak restoration project , I bought more from West Marine instead of waiting for delivery from the east coast.
Plus, I like to support my local store a little to help make sure they’re around in the future. They benefit the local economy and provide a valuable service to the local boating community. It’s also about the only place in my area to see and try electronics like a GPS, chart plotter, or VHF radio before buying.
Sign up for the Silver (free) or Gold ($24/yr.) level of their West Advantage Rewards program and you can earn points back for qualifying purchases and receive other benefits.
Nautos USA is the US distributor for Nautos Industria Metalurgica Ltda, a manufacturer of sailboat hardware and accessories in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In my opinion, they make products that are every bit as good as their American-made competitors but at a fraction of the price. If you’re tempted to buy Chinese hardware because of the price, buy Brazilian instead. I’ve been very happy with the quality and they have a surprisingly broad choice of products. For some items, you can find more technical information to help make your selection on the Nautos factory website .
I purchased all the blocks for my lines led aft and cruising spinnaker projects from Nautos as well as some other hardware. Shipping from their warehouse in Florida has always been fast and their customer service is excellent. They recently introduced free shipping on orders of $50 or more. Download their PDF catalog and subscribe to their newsletter to hear about upcoming sales, which are often 20% off everything online. They also offer many of the same items in their eBay store .
If you need of any parts or accessories that are popular and common to both sailboats and motor boats, Wholesale Marine offers attractive prices. They also stock sailing-specific gear from Ronstan and Barton Marine. Although their selection isn’t large, they’re a good place to go for basic items. For example, when I did my complete rewiring project, I especially appreciated that they sell Ancor marine grade wire by the foot and connectors by the piece and don’t force you to buy more than you need. They too have an eBay store where you can sometimes find extra bargains.
An even better source for electrical supplies only is GenuineDealz.com .
Second only to West Marine in promoting their own brand, Jamestown Distributors is an old school chandlery that caters especially to boat builders. Their prices aren’t as low as some others, but their selection of raw materials and building supplies is unmatched. For example, when I refinished my swing keel , JD had all the supplies that I needed so I could place one order with free shipping, something none of the other suppliers could match. If you’re uneasy about mixing and matching products like resins, paints, primers, and adhesives, you’ll appreciate JD’s own TotalBoat line of products that all come with free shipping.
Like West Marine, JD promotes customer education through their many product demonstration videos and how-to articles. Their website is perhaps the most powerful of all the major retailers in that you can narrow down your search using multiple criteria such as by type, brand, size, price, and rating. The JD print catalog is great for wintertime project planning and seeing some good craftsmanship.
Defender has an excellent selection of general marine parts and supplies including sailing hardware from Andersen, Harken, Lewmar, Ronstan, Schaefer, and Samson ropes. They offer good prices and frequent sales but do not offer free shipping no matter the size of the order. Their customer service has been good in my experience, such as when I placed a special order for mounting parts for my Raymarine autopilot . Their website is relatively easy to use even though it requires you to drill down through category levels. Sign up for their email list to receive sale notices and for their print catalog, which makes good browsing material while you’re um…on the captain’s chair.
By the way, though not as economical as Sailrite , Defender is an alternate source for Sunbrella canvas.
If I know exactly what I need and can find new parts at auction or Buy It Now prices, the cost is usually lower than even the online retailers. There are exceptions, though. Some dishonest sellers list items at higher than retail prices, sometimes much higher. Or they will try to entice you with an extremely low listing price and hope you don’t notice the ludicrous shipping price that more than makes up for the difference.
Secret confessions of an eBay sniper
I try not to pay more than 60% of retail for used parts unless it’s something very rare. For used parts, it’s most important to know how to recognize excessive wear from normal use, what’s acceptable and you can refurbish, and what’s not acceptable and you should pass up. For that, it pays to do your homework in advance with online research.
For rare parts, you have to be patient and wait for listings to appear. I use search alerts extensively so that I’m notified by email when a part I’ve been waiting for pops up. If I’m lucky, it has a reasonable Buy It Now price and I’ll buy it immediately. If it’s an auction listing, I’ll try to snipe it in the last 10 seconds of the auction. Sometimes I lose, but I often win and lock out other bidders.
If you’re not already an active eBayer, you might be suspicious of getting ripped off, which can happen if you don’t know exactly what you’re buying or don’t ask the seller the right questions in advance. In my experience from almost 300 buying and selling transactions, I’ve only had a couple that didn’t work out as expected. Even those, I was able to work out to my satisfaction by being firm and patient. Trust is the foundation of eBay and their system works well.
Where do you shop?
There probably weren’t any surprises in that list for those of you who have been working on your sailboat for very long. Well, maybe the conspicuous absence of a popular online Catalina parts retailer, which is the last place I go for parts, but that’s a different story . There just aren’t many sources to choose from at the national level. Of course, there are some excellent regional sources as well.

Another great post full of knowledge, and I love the poll widget! #nice
Haha just read your conclusion & yes love the idea of polls, but rarely do I actually click on them #lol
Thanks for the recommendations. A couple comments and additions:
I shop at most of the same sources, but I’d put West Marine a little higher on my list. With a little attention to sales, coupons, double- or triple-points days for their loyalty program, etc., I can usually average 30-40% off their regular prices. And they ship free on orders over $49, so the net price is usually better than Defender. And WM’s return policy and customer service is very good – if necessary, I can return items purchased online to a local store, which is a great option. I still order from Defender as well, but mostly for items that WM doesn’t stock.
One story – I bought a new Lifesling from WM (naturally, when it came on a good sale) before a trip to the Puget Sound. When we were packing the boat, I told my wife to leave out the old horseshoe throwable. But then I left the Lifesling, in its box, on the living room floor, and didn’t realize it until we were 4 hours from home. I talked to the local WM, and they let me buy another one in Olympia, and return the new one I’d left at home when we got back to Oregon. I like customer service that gets me out of my own stupidity! 🙂
For electronics and similar items, I recommend checking AnchorExpress. I bought a VHF, a bulkhead compass, and a few related items from them at very good prices. I believe we also bought our inflatable PFDs there, again at a very good price.
For electrical supplies (wire, heat-shrink connectors, battery lugs, etc.), I heartily second MaineSail’s recommendation of GenuineDealz. In my experience (and MaineSail’s, which is much more informed than mine), the parts they carry are at least equal in quality, and in many cases superior, to Ancor, at a fraction of the cost. Also, they seem like the best source for high-quality heat-shrink tubing. And they don’t charge shipping, so you can order just a single bag of connectors if you need to replenish a particular bin in your parts tub (I try not to abuse that too much, as I’m sure they don’t net much profit on a $4 order…). The only time I interacted with their customer service was when they shipped a bag of the wrong part – they immediately shipped replacements, and didn’t even ask me to return the others.
Nobody doubts with the #1
How do you keep the interior of your 22 so nice. Have you painted the interior ?
No paint, I’m just a bit of a neatnik. As small as a C-22 is inside, you almost have to be if you want to be able to use what space there is and find what you need.
These projects made a big difference and were a lot of work so I like to keep them looking that way: How to Sew Cabin Cushion Covers Refinish Your Interior Teak to Better Than New Sew Your Own Cabin Cabin Curtains and Save Brighten up Your Cabin with LED Strip Lighting
I have a new-to-me Ranger 23, so I’ve been stalking your archives and found this. I had never heard of Nautos – thank you! One of my sources which is not on your list is Garhauer. They sell solid, if a bit heavy, gear at good prices. I think they actually OEM a lot of the Catalina equipment.

Used boat parts are the most economical alternative to buying fresh parts for your boat. There are numerous organizations which are involved in the process of stocking quality, well maintained second-hand boat parts. It is a more cost effective method to buy used boat parts as they offer cost savings over new parts. Also, there are a number of models of outboard and sterndrive motor parts which are no longer manufactured. This has, in turn, led to making it difficult for the owners of these motors to find authentic and genuine parts. The only possible way this can be done is to use second hand boat parts. However, the question which inevitably arises is the condition of the used parts. The best bet in the field of buying bona fide used boat parts is U.S. Boatworks. With over thirty years of industrial experience to its name, USBoatworks offers some of the best quality obsolete boat parts that you can find in the market. Their parts come from motors that have only seen fresh water lakes and rivers so you don’t have to worry about receiving salt water damaged parts. U.S. Boatworks caters to models of boats from the 1950s to the present year. This translates into the fact that there is an extensive catalog of NLA boat parts from which you can choose. Buy your used NLA parts from USBoatworks, your #1 source for Boat Parts. Looking for an obsolete part number for your vintage motor? Check out our boat parts finder for parts lookup by engine diagram. Simply find your manufacturer and model number and then select the major engine component. Once the engine component is selected, you will get an exploded view engine diagram with part numbers. If those parts are in stock, you can add them to your cart. Odds are if you have an older model boat motor that the part will say “call us”. This means that we could have it in stock as a used or NOS boat part. Feel free to call or email us about the part you need and we will happily get right back to you.
