Dancing through the world of words, hidden treasure under the shadow of the golden gate bridge.
The Travis Marina Bar is hidden on the edge of the harbor in Horseshoe Cove in Travis Marina at Fort Baker. Most people are unaware of the club right under their noses when they drive north from San Francisco to Marin County over the bridge.
Up a flight of rickety wooden stairs there is no sign, but Christmas lights invitingly wink and twinkle as jovial banter floats out the open door. Seagulls wheel overhead, while sea lions pop up from the sea bream and bark.
The long, polished bar across the scuffed wooden dance floor is populated by various local characters—it’s a hangout. Nary a tourist in sight.
A collection of overstuffed leather chairs and couches angle around the windows facing the bay. Get here before dark so you can witness the beauty of water turning from sharp copper to jet-blue caressed by the setting sunlight. Or it might be a foggy dusk when the soft, pale blanket of mist hovering over jade-grey waters dims and fades into the foghorned night.
On nights when there is a band—usually Friday-Sunday—join couples and singles swinging about to blues, country, or rock-and-roll standards. The folks at the bar chat you up when you mosey over for a pint, and the dancers beckon the couch potatoes to get up and shake a leg. It is a very friendly crowd.
Fort Baker, where this wonderful tavern is located, is a 335-acre former U.S. Army post that has been incorporated into the vast, open park space of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The cannon gun placements and Nike missile launch sites still poke their rusty, rumbled heads above the lacy fields of fennel and waving rattlesnake grass that surround the dilapidated piers and buildings.
Originally inhabited by coastal Miwok tribes, Horseshoe Cove became home to Fort Baker long before there was a Golden Gate Bridge. In 1866, the U.S. Army acquired the site for a military base to fortify the north side of the Golden Gate. The Army post remained active through World War II.
A myriad of honeycombed trails leading into the Marin Headlands are an excellent place to explore by foot or bike. A public fishing pier just past the Coast Guard station is situated almost underneath the Bridge. Panoramic views captivate, with San Francisco rising like Oz across the spangled waters. As you crane your neck to look up at the bridge, it seems immense and is gloriously lit. At night the pier is bustling with fishermen bundled up from the ice-chill winds, patiently waiting to hook jacksmelt, sanddab, rockfish, king salmon, sturgeon, and crabs.
Nestled against the Scotch-broom-swathed hillside is the juxtaposition of the funky and friendly yacht club. Surrounding the ten-acre Fort Baker parade grounds are classic officer buildings that have been renovated and now house Cavallo Point Resort. Valets park sleek Jaguars, Rolls-Royces, and Teslas that zoom up to the entrance of the hotel and restaurant.
The Presidio Yacht Club was organized at the Presidio of San Francisco in 1959, and maintains a yacht harbor on Horseshoe Cove with 70 berths, guest docks, maintenance facilities, and a clubhouse open to the public managed by Travis Air Force Base (go figure!). The club and its members are active in Bay Area yacht racing, power and sail cruising, and the local, regional, and international boating community.
The bar hovers above a seaweed-strewn beach dotted with racing canoes. Watching the Tamalpais Outrigger Canoe Club teams launch their boats into the turbulent bay to paddle energetically out to the choppy waters is also invigorating, in a passive sort of way.
Sunset is the perfect time to arrive, when you get to see the Golden Gate Bridge glowing in the daylight and then transitioning to her glittering, swooping necklace at night. On foggy days, maybe not—but then you get the call of the foghorns and the International Orange eerie glow of her fabulous towers and spans.
Discover this hidden gem in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge—savor the music, the drinks, and the best views ever. The characters dancing on the old wooden floor are a fine and copacetic mix of young rangers and researchers from the park service; employees from the nearby museum and Coast Guard station; and old salts with barnacled fishing boats and yachts tied up at the dock.
Details, details…
Travis Marina Bar is currently open for indoor seating, Live Music & Private Events on Fridays 4pm-8pm; Saturday 12pm-8pm; Sunday 12pm-6pm.
It is located in Horseshoe Cove, Fort Baker, Sausalito, on the second floor of the Travis Sailing Center. Look for the wooden stairs on the far side of the building. Guest docks are available if you sail there.
Check the events calendar page to see if the bar is open (sometimes they close for private events), and if there is live music.
For more information, visit Travis Marina or call 415.332.2319
How To Drive There:
Take Alexander Avenue off of Highway 101. It is the last exit before driving onto the Golden Gate Bridge going south, and the first exit after the vista point going north. Take Alexander Drive down the hill till you see Danes Drive and then, just before the tunnel, turn right onto Bunker Road and follow it down to the pier and Horseshoe Cove.

I tried a ship-within-a-ship cruise experience and it was worth it for the endless perks—here’s why
The MSC Yacht Club affords travelers a totally different cruising experience, but you’ll have to splurge.
I heard tales of luxury from people about the ritzy MSC Yacht Club , the ship-within-a-ship concept where discerning passengers enjoy their own area of the cruise ship that includes a dedicated restaurant, private lounge, separate pool and sundeck as well as private butlers and concierges to take of any whim while cruising. The elevated Yacht Club boasts priority everything while sailing MSC.
I sailed on a four-night cruise on the new MSC Seashore, a glitzy ship with Italian flair intermingled with references to New York City at every turn. Although the ship was well-appointed and had amazing dining, drinking and entertainment venues, and a bountiful Top Sail main buffet, thousands of passengers made the ship feel crowded at times, elevators were slow, and as I strolled through the general pools, they were boisterous and crowded.
RECOMMENDED: 10 things about cruising on an adults-only ship that might surprise you
Switch gears to MSC Seashore’s Yacht Club, passkey-protected for lucky guests, and is a 180 from the ship’s general spaces. Once you scan your handy Yacht Club wrist badge, or your room key, you’re instantly given entrance to a breathtaking retreat of 131 staterooms and suites. All this luxury does come at a price. Cruise fares will vary based on destination, time of year, and cabin category, but generally speaking you can expect to pay double for the Yacht Club. And from my experience, it’s worth it. Read more about why you should splurge.
You’re fast-tracked through everything
The Yacht Club’s exclusivity and impeccable service standard started from the moment I got dropped off at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. There were hundreds of people waiting to board at 1pm on embarkation day. I saw in the distance a canopy that said MSC Yacht Club. My husband and I wheeled our carry-on luggage to the representative under the canopy. I gave her my name and within two seconds, she gave me a sticker to wear and up we ascended on the escalator to check in. Just five minutes later, I was directed to the dedicated check-in area for Yacht Club guests. To my right, I saw about 1,000 people serpentine through ropes to do general check-in. I felt a sense of relief; who wants to wait in that line? Five minutes later, a butler from the Yacht Club insisted on wheeling my luggage to board the ship and I was in my room in a total on 12 minutes from the time I stepped foot out of the car to my stateroom in the Yacht Club.
Relaxing and streamlined
In addition, Yacht Club guests have the freedom to get off the ship first for excursions. Your butler will happily escort you off the ship with a smile. Guests also can disembark on the last morning first, which is a big convenience. Your butler walks you right to the place you disembark, bypassing crowds and hassles. Port Canaveral is about an hour away from Orlando International Airport, and we took a 10 am flight home. We didn’t have to linger around until the afternoon for our flight home.
Another perk is that there’s a special seating area in the theater for shows. All the shows were excellent during my voyage. All other ship passengers have to make reservations in advance for shows but that’s not the case for the privileged Yacht Club passengers. As long as you arrive about 10 minutes before any show you choose, a crew member from the Club will allow you entry into a special roped-off section. Again, no rushing through dinner—you have the flexibility to plan your evenings your way.
Your Yacht Club package is packed with remarkable value
The price tag may sound daunting, but there’s lots of value there. All Yacht Club cabins and suites include a premium drink package that covers beverages up to $15. You can use this perk both in the Yacht Club and throughout the ship. In addition, your package includes a two-device Wi-Fi package, which worked well during my sailing. Finally, you get access to the thermal spa suite, which is a place to indulge after a day in port or a sea day. Commonly, there’s a taboo regarding mini-bars, but not in the Yacht Club. It’s stocked each day with the beverages you want; just tell your butler and consider it done.
You get perks ashore too
If your sailing includes a call to Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, Yacht Club guests get an elevated experience there too. Yacht Club guests enjoy a private area, and a dedicated restaurant called the Ocean House. While other ship guests were hosted to a buffet of predictable fare, I enjoyed a lobster roll, and my husband chose carne asada. In my opinion, one thing that could be improved was the tram service to the Yacht Club’s private area. We were told the last tram back was 3:30pm if we didn’t want to trek a 15-minute walk in the heat. Since we were docked in Ocean Cay for the evening and weren’t sailing, I was a bit dismayed by this logistical quirk. I felt like I was keeping an eye on my phone to make sure I didn’t miss the last tram.
You have private areas with curated food and drink and outdoor spaces
Within the Yacht Club complex, there’s the Yacht Club Restaurant, Top Sail Lounge and the One Pool Buffet, which are all exclusive to Yacht Club guests. Obviously, the food and service are steps above other dining venues of the ship, I can vouch for that. Although the food is delicious, if you don’t want to pay extra to dine at the specialty restaurants or fuss in the main buffet, eating three meals a day in the Yacht Club restaurant can get a bit monotonous. The breakfast is the same daily, and lunch and dinner offer a menu with daily specials plus a few standby selections like a hamburger or pasta each day. Although the Yacht Club Restaurant concept is desirable, I would strongly suggest dining in other venues on board, especially for dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed specialty dining in Ocean Cay Restaurant, Butcher’s Cut, and Kaito Teppanyaki. I also want to mention that late afternoon high tea is offered daily at the Yacht Club Restaurant. It was one of the nicest I have experienced at sea.
Also available exclusively to Yacht Club passengers is the Top Sail Lounge, which offers panoramic water views and has chef-curated selections from morning through late night. We enjoyed popping into the lounge at all hours to try finger foods and sweets. The One Pool Buffet offers a more casual option for breakfast and lunch by the pool. The buffet has grilled fish, sandwiches and lots of delicious options if you want to dine outside.
There’s also an exclusive area with a private pool and two whirlpools for Yacht Club guests only. The sun deck loungers are very comfortable and I never had to worry about finding a lounger, there are ample. One issue I had was that there was almost no shade on the sun deck; there were shaded day beds for Royal Suite and Owners Suite guests, but beyond those, I couldn’t find any shade, which was disappointing.
You can justify the price at the end of your cruise
Overall, the best way to explain my enthusiasm for my MSC Yacht Club experience is this: it’s better to book an interior stateroom in the Yacht Club than a luxe cabin outside the Yacht Club. It’s worth the splurge and you return home feeling truly pampered and it’s money well-spent. And I make this prediction: Once you try a ship-within-a-ship concept like the MSC Yacht Club, you won’t want cruise any other way. Bon Voyage!
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

The view, the location! The food: bell pepper burgers frozen patties in a box and buns in a bag with a bag of potato chips for $10 bucks, ... but the view, the location! Patio is bike friendly; you can keep your eye on your whip.
i went to a wedding held here and while the view is spectacular the service was mediocre at best. The event didn't have enough food for everyone, but that could be catering's fault. The upstairs isn't very well ventilated for how many people it holds. The barstaff was polite enough and served decent drinks, but all in all i'd say the place is ok.
Great place for live music and dancing, warm friendly atmosphere (open to the public), reasonable prices, fun and funky, stunning view of the Golden Gate Bridge, highly recommended!
I love this bar best views in the Bay Area day or night and it is so laid back and friendly very affordable and all by itself on the very of the North Bay under the Golden Gate Bridge .. Have a pint of beer or a cocktail and just watch the boats sale out of the bay
Great spot for a private party! Had the best time this weekend and our bartenders rocked! Thanks Danielle and Patrick!
Gotta love it, you can take classes if your in the military and rent the boats to sail the bay or rent a "volunteer" captain...dive bar with the BEST view of the bridge...I will definitly be coming here a lot.
Buddy of mine got married here -- *great* place for a wedding if you want a fun, down-to-earth place. (All I need is a bride.)
The Presidio Yacht Club is a cool little spot at the base of the Sausalito side of the Golden Gate. Had a couple of drinks and just hung around. Felt like we were in a Top Gun movie. Go there and relax!
I just discovered the Travis Marina Bar and absolutely fell in love with it. When I looked it up here, I discovered the Fort Baker Plan and now am terrified that the treasure is going away. I want to help keep it as is, if that is possible. What can I do to help?? The atmosphere and the view are priceless, and need to remain available to the average person, who cannot afford the beautiful rest of Fort Mason.
For the view--- 5+++ stars, I mean it literally doesn't GET much better than this view. It's extraordinary. Parking, it's gravel, and it's dark as heck, but it's free and plentiful, another 5 stars. The space is pretty much dive-bar perfection, no complaints. The only area on which the PYC falls down is SERVICE. It is absolutely god awful, horrible, no good service. If you're looking for the bartender (there's just 1 as far as I can tell), look outside on the deck where she's likely nursing a cigarette, even if the bar is three deep. If she's not there, she's in the scary kitchen possibly imbibing some of the alcohol you're trying to purchase from her (she often seems three sheets to the wind, to use a yachting term). The food is pretty bad too, but since the aforementioned bartender is the cook as well, I've never even bothered to order food, I've only seen what comes out an hour after it's been ordered and it doesn't look like it was worth the wait. On the up-side, the bartender will toss you some free chips occasionally, I guess to make up for the calories you've burned standing and waiting for a beer. All in all, it's a great place, worth its shortcomings for the really incredible view and fun atmosphere.

Workday & dinner.
Normally every second Saturday of the month, Club members volunteer together to work on Club and Marina maintenance. Because of the unique location of the Marina, and the historic nature of the buildings, there is always something that needs a helping hand. Club members who volunteer receive a discount on food and drink at the Travis Marina Bar.
Following the workday, Club members sit down to enjoy the monthly dinner served in the banquet hall. Some dinners are catered by local restaurants, while others are cooked and served by members themselves. More often than not, diners end up moving upstairs to the Travis Marina Bar for live music and further entertainment. Check the calendar for up to date information.
Cruise Outs
Cruise outs are opportunities for PYC members to sail or motor to bay area destinations for fun and relaxation. However, you don't have to get there by boat to join in the fun. Contact the Vice Commodore for more information on upcoming cruise outs.
Visit the calendar to see our schedule!
We're located in Horseshoe Cove, Fort Baker, Sausalito, on the second floor of the Travis Sailing Center. Look for the wooden stairs on the far side of the building. Guest docks are available.
