Pershing Yachts The Pershing Yacht story began in 1981 with wooden boats built by 3 seagoing fanatics, each with considerable yacht building experience and a passion for fast cruising yachts. By 1985, the Pershing 45’ was born, designed in collaboration with Fulvio De Simoni and met with instant success, due to its numerous innovations. By the early 1990’s, Pershing had expanded to a worldwide yacht dealer network, with over 70% of their production going to the Far East and United States. In 1998, Pershing became part of the Ferretti Group and gained worldwide exposure through the intense marketing efforts of yachts by this conglomerate, which has resulted in an expansive range of sport yachts and ultimately large motor yachts, with an emphasis on speed and handling. Pershing 82 VHP: The thrill-seeking 25m yacht with a need for speed
“This thing should have seatbelts,” I think as I plant myself in the empty helm chair next to the captain. We are gathering speed in Miami’s Biscayne Bay, 35 knots, 40, 45 and climbing, throwing an attention grabbing rooster tail 30ft in the air behind us.
I am enjoying a front row seat on a 25 metre Pershing 82, from the brand whose sole objective is to go very, very fast. But this is no ordinary 82. The mid-40s top speed of the five-year-old model wasn’t quick enough for one American client. Working with him, Pershing developed this VHP (for “very high performance”) rendition that will reach 52.5 knots. After unveiling it in early 2017, the company has built eight VHP models, four of which have gone to the US market.
I received an invitation to break the 50 knot barrier, “without spilling my champagne,” so I had to test that, of course. After all, this is a yacht that calls for bubbly. I take an experimental sip of my before-noon libation (it’s OK – this is during Art Basel ). Yep, the Veuve remains steady in the flute.
It is surprisingly comfortable inside at speed, though “inside” isn’t quite the word for it. It doesn’t feel at all enclosed as the glass bulkhead that separates the open plan main deck interior from the aft deck recedes completely, creating one continuous space. Fresh air circulates without mussing the hair. There’s also a sunroof over the helm but the captain opts to shut it when we leave the sedate cruising of Government Cut and cross under the Rickenbacker Causeway.
“With the boat closed, there’s very little concept of speed,” confirms Randy Coleman, vice president of North American sales for parent company, Ferretti Group, “especially in flat water. You go outside and it’s still OK, but poke your head around the corner and you’ll feel it.”
The illusion is partly down to the power plants responsible for the speed boost. The 16V 2000 M96Ls are MTU’s latest tier three engines and very quiet considering they are generating 2,600 horsepower each. The place you don’t want to be at 50 knots is the flybridge, where you could literally be blown away. The top deck, with its pop-up navigation console, is quite low profile, hence there’s not much of a windbreak.
At the main deck helm, corporate captain Damon Lish smiles. “There’s no way around it, she’s just a fun boat to drive,” he says as, with fingers on the tiller, he takes a sharp turn at 40 knots. We heel like a sailboat and cross our wake with nary a bump. So much of the yacht, including the propellers, is out of the water at this speed. If the vast bathing platform wasn’t concealing them from view, you could see the props breaking the surface, thanks to the Top System surface drives. But you don’t need to know anything about the drives to take the wheel though; Autotrim can do it all for you.
It’s an ideal system for a fast boat as it reduces drag, but there’s much more to the speed picture, says Coleman. “It’s not just the engines and drives, it’s the very deep V shape of the hull, it’s the way the furniture is assembled and put in the boat, it’s the way the whole boat is put together. There are very few seams on all Ferretti products, but particularly on a Pershing. It’s one solid piece of fiberglass.”
When the Ferretti Group revisited the 82 model to increase the performance, it also took the opportunity to add a new layer of Italian luxury to the interior. Poltrona Frau furnishings and leather stand out among the dark and pale-streaked oak backdrop. The guest heads feature striking Bisazza-tiled showers and Antoniolupi basins, and the master is accented with a metallic patterned wallpaper by French technology power company Elitis. Expansive windows in the forward VIP and amidships master make it obvious that you are directly on the sea. I particularly appreciate the textured flooring on the main deck, a Pershing hallmark, which securely grips the feet.
The hull I am cruising on includes a media lounge, which takes the place of a fourth cabin, and makes a pleasant landing spot when going below. Another gathering place is the foredeck, which has a large sunpad forward of a table and seating that can be covered by a canopy.
I had arrived at the boat in the morning via the mayhem that is driving into Miami at rush hour. Like me, the Pershing 82 VHP also left Fort Lauderdale that morning and, even with a brisk wind churning up the Atlantic, it makes it dock to dock in less time – its cruising speed of 45 knots (52mph) far exceeding my plodding progress down Interstate 95. I’m sure it was a heck of a lot more fun too.

Pershing's Progress and GrowthAug 13, 2021  Since its start in 1981, Pershing Yachts consistently built more and more innovative yacht designs. By the early 1990s, the shipyard realized the value of expanding their market. They implemented a new international policy to focus on the United States, the Mediterranean countries, and East Asia. In 1998 Pershing made the move to join the Ferretti Group, a luxury yacht business, to ensure future growth for the company. Fourteen years later, in 2012, the Chinese-owned Weichai Group, that specializes in the design, manufacture, and sale of diesel engines, became the main stockholder of Ferretti Group. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club. This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts. A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc. It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season. The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta. Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening. Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed. Ferretti 530 Yacht to make her Russian premiere at Moscow Boat Show This year’s Moscow Boat Show will also offer the Ferretti Group the opportunity to announce all yachting enthusiasts in Russia and Northern Eurasia a new important achievement in its international growth: the renewal of its exclusive dealership agreement for the Russian Federation with its partner Premium Yachts , one of the leading dealers operating in the boating sector in Russia , which will represent the Ferretti Yachts , Pershing , Itama , Bertram , Riva e Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line brands. The agreement – which was officially announced today during a press conference attended, among others, by Ferruccio Rossi (Ferretti Group’s CEO), Alexey Kurochkin (Premium Yachts’s President), and Stefano Campanelli (Sales Manager for the EMEA area for Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line) – is part of Ferretti Group’s strategy for a further expansion on the European markets offering the best short/medium-term growth perspectives, also thanks to the financial soundness regained following the strategic partnership forged with the Weichai Group. More specifically, the Russian boating market holds a great potential for the Ferretti Group’s development because of the rapid growth of average wealth among the population and an increasing interest for Made in Italy luxury goods, like Ferretti Group yachts. Through the renewal of the agreement with Premium Yachts, the Group will further strengthen its highly selected distribution network – which currently includes approximately 60 dealers ensuring the best possible customer care in more than 80 countries worldwide – as well as its presence in the traditional EMEA ( Europe , Middle East , Africa ) area, one of the three macro-regions (besides the America and the Asia-Pacific) into which the Group’s sales structure is divided. Moreover, in a medium/long-term perspective, the Ferretti Group is expecting an increasing interest on the Russian market not only for flying bridge yachts above 70’ in length, but also towards smaller crafts, both flybridge and open/coupé ones, which are particularly suitable for river cruising or pleasure boating in Russia’s large lakes. Consequently, the renewal of the dealership agreement with Premium Yachts also allows to look ahead at the future aiming to conquer new market segments where less competitors are currently present in terms of both products and geographic location. THE TWO NEW MODELS PRESENTED AT MOSCOW BOAT SHOW 2013 FERRETTI 530 Ferretti 530 is a new, innovative model in the segment of flying bridge 50/60 footers allowing its owner to enjoy all-Italian luxury and cruise with a level of comfort that was so far unknown on yachts of this size. This increases market penetration at an international level among younger, more dynamic owners who don’t settle in terms of prestige, quality, comfort and performances. In particular, the Ferretti 530 stands out for its full-beam master cabin with chaise longue and two large open-view windows that make of it a true suite on the sea, as well as for the new layout – where the relocation of the galley from the centre of the boat to the stern results in one single open space including the salon, the galley/bar, the dining area, and the cockpit, without any interruption thanks to the up-and-over window.
