_ Meet Nick Edmiston -The sailing king of Monaco

Nick edmiston, founder of edmiston & co, has led the way in monaco’s super-yacht industry for thirty years. here he talks about life in the privileged principality whose yachting scene has a prestige that is unrivalled. .

Yachting is inextricably linked to life in Monaco. “Every child in Monaco will learn sailing at some stage in their education,” the architect Sir Norman Foster commented at the opening of the Principality’s Foster + Partners-designed Yacht Club de Monaco.

And there is no better place to see Monaco life in microcosm than at his waterfront paean to sailing.

The Yacht Club displays all the requisite accessories of the luxury lifestyle – the watch and fashion boutiques, the fine dining, super-yacht berths and priceless views over the Grand Prix track.

But this sustainable building, powered by the sun and cooled by sea water, is a hub for all the community, with a children’s sailing school, a restaurant that offers a €20 ‘menu du jour’ and a landscaped park on the roof that provides a new pedestrian route between the quayside and Casino Square.

Physically and symbolically, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s new home, which opened in 2014, sums up what this wealth, water-loving nation is all about.

Nick Edmiston, founder of Edmiston & Co

It is also a natural home for Nick Edmiston, founder and chairman of Edmiston & Co, one of the most recognised brands in international yachting, now run by his son Jamie.

Edmiston, previously the CEO of yacht firm Camper & Nicholsons, moved to Monaco in 1989 and launched the company that has become a world leader in the sale, charter, management and construction of super-yachts.

“I used to commute regularly between London and the south of France and was going to live in Cannes, but Monaco is far more convenient and there are advantages to running a business here rather than in France,” he comments.

“That’s one of the most important reasons for me to be here as, unlike other countries that are in flux, Monaco has a very structured financial regulatory system. It’s a good place to do business.”

It is arguably the only place to be if you hope to find success in the super-yacht business. While newcomers such as Montenegro are making their mark on the world yachting scene, “Monaco is the Mediterranean centre of yachting and it has a prestige that nowhere else can replicate. Ours was one of the earliest yachting businesses down there.

Every successful yachting company has followed my example,” says Edmiston, fresh from 2017’s Yacht Show, which he is confident will lead to securing a few deals for yachts costing up to €100m.

His advice to prospective investors is never to spend more than 10% of their net wealth on a yacht – then to budget for 10% of that figure in the annual costs. “The cheap thing is buying it. The expensive thing is running it. You don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about it,” he says.

In his early days in Monaco, €20m was considered top whack. “Now yachts are getting ever bigger and more sophisticated. The most expensive one I’ve sold was €350m,” he says. Gyms, pools and helipads have become staple features. “I know one yacht that can land four helicopters at any time. The owner said ‘I’ve got mine, but what about my guests?’” Edmiston recounts. “There’s nothing you can’t do on a yacht now.”

Like its yachting industry, much has changed about Monaco in the 30 years he has been there. “It was fairly traditional and village-like when I arrived, but the advent of new and very heavyweight money has made it into a very cosmopolitan and sociable place. There are now 3,000 British expats and about 150 Russian families resident here,” he says.

Edmiston & Co is a household name in the sale, charter, management and construction of super-yachts

“The Brits were mainly older, established retirees. Now Monaco is shifting towards a younger profile. They have successfully sold their business or are still running a business in yachting, banking or investment.

"There is more of a trend to continue working while living here and it’s becoming more attractive to families with kids.

The schools here are fantastic and most children are at least bilingual,” says Edmiston, whose younger children were educated in state schools in Monaco before moving to boarding schools in England.

The world’s most densely-populated country comes with its challenges. Some 50,000 people come into Monaco by train or car each day for work, which takes its toll on traffic flow and sparks fierce competition for parking places.

“One of the problems for people who work here is that they cannot afford to live here. Of the 80 or so people in my office, only half a dozen live in Monaco. If you happen to be Monesgasque, the Prince looks after you very well,” says Edmiston.

There is considerable construction work taking place too, including on a new peninsula of reclaimed land opposite the Grimaldi Forum. “There is always building work going on, but it’s progress. Monaco has a very progressive attitude and it’s a good, vibrant place to live,” Edmiston comments.

Edmiston full service yacht brokerage firm

How this brokerage firm stole the spotlight in 2023

As the sun sets on 2023, BOAT looks back at a year of extraordinary accomplishments, and at the forefront of this success stands Edmiston , a global leader in providing comprehensive support for yacht owners. In the realm of yacht sales, charter and management, Edmiston has not only met but exceeded expectations.

Sales triumphs

In the fiercely competitive world of yacht brokerage, Edmiston has showcased unparalleled prowess, solidifying its position as a leader in 2023. The brokerage firm has achieved remarkable milestones, with standout sales including the in-house transaction of 60.9-metre Samadhi just 92 days after coming on the market, the in-house sale of 74-metre Andrea (formerly Lady Jorgia ), and the ground-breaking sale of 85.9-metre Aquijo , the largest sailing yacht of the year. Notably, the in-house deal of 49.8-metre Perseus (formerly Silencio ) secured the title of the fastest pedigree sailing yacht sale in 2023.

Edmiston's dominance extends beyond individual achievements, boasting more brokerage deals for yachts over 30 metres than any other firm. The efficiency of the team is evident, with the average time to sell an Edmiston yacht being half of the global average. Notably, Edmiston has claimed 50 per cent of the market share in Feadship sales and a 20 per cent market share for yachts sold over 65 metres. As we look ahead to 2024, the firm is already steering towards success with significant new-build projects on the horizon.

Expanding the fleet

Edmiston's growth in 2023 is further underscored by a healthy increase in new charter yachts to its central agency fleet, including several standout yachts: 115-metre Ahpo , 90-metre DAR , 72-metre Arbema and 64.5-metre Silver Angel . Despite selling five yachts from the fleet, Edmiston's central agency portfolio continues to expand, a testament to the firm's ability to attract and represent some of the finest yachts on the market.

“The key to this year’s successes has once again been the close collaboration of our highly diverse, experienced, driven and nimble team backed by the Edmiston platform," says Alex Koersvelt, commercial director at Edmiston.

Taking centre stage at yacht shows

Edmiston's presence at major events in the global yachting calendar, including the Monaco Yacht Show and the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) , was nothing short of spectacular. Showcasing an exceptional brand presence and displaying top-pedigree yachts, these events were pivotal in reinforcing Edmiston's influence and reach in the industry.

In an ongoing commitment to elevate client experiences during boat shows and events, Edmiston has recently undergone a significant redesign of the interior and exterior of the Edmiston London Heliport. This transformation ensures that the facility is not only aesthetically refined but also optimised for the swift and seamless transportation of guests to and from events. Distinguished as the only CAA-approved heliport in the capital, with authorisation for 12,000 take-offs and landings annually, the Edmiston London Heliport offers a premium solution for clients seeking efficient and exclusive aerial transport.

For those traveling to and from Farnborough Airport, the experience is further enhanced with access to the exclusive Edmiston lounge, providing an added layer of luxury to every journey.

Strategic partnerships

In May 2023, Edmiston's collaboration with US aircraft designer and developer Gulfstream marked a significant milestone. Named as Gulfstream's international sales representative for the UK and the Channel Islands, Edmiston now seamlessly integrates luxury yacht experiences with private air travel. This partnership not only strengthens the synergy between yachts and private aircraft but also allows Edmiston to offer unparalleled luxury travel packages to its discerning clientele.

In addition to this, Edmiston's sponsorship of Goodwood for the Festival of Speed and Revival events in 2023 marked a unique collaboration in the automotive industry. This partnership not only showcased Edmiston's dedication to exciting experiences but also facilitated a helicopter airbridge, whisking guests from The Edmiston London Heliport to Goodwood's Heliport in just 20 minutes, adding a touch of luxury to the festivities.

Nurturing the future and preserving the seas

Beyond business success, Edmiston has continued its exceptional work with the Edmiston Foundation, making a positive impact in 2023. Collaborating with UKSA (United Kingdom Sailing Academy) and the Conservation Collective, Edmiston has supported educational and conservation initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to giving back to the community. The partnership with UKSA has empowered thousands of children facing educational inequality and poor mental health, offering them pathways into the marine industry.

"Working with UKSA through the Edmiston Foundation provides an opportunity for young underprivileged individuals to discover the wealth of opportunities that the maritime industry has to offer and funding exceptional candidates right through their higher-level maritime education to ensure we have highly trained individuals working on the yachts in our industry," comments Alex Holden, strategy director at Edmiston.

Simultaneously, Edmiston's collaboration with the Conservation Collective has supported grassroots marine conservation projects in locations where Edmiston yachts frequently travel. From Ibiza to St Vincent & the Grenadines, Edmiston's initiatives range from awareness campaigns to direct action, reinforcing the firm's dedication to eco-conscious practices and community involvement.

25 September 2024: MYS opening conference on sustainability.

edmiston monaco yacht show

Press release - September 6 2024

The Monaco Yacht Show announces the focus of its annual opening conference, centred on sustainability within the yachting industry.

Scheduled for September 25, 2024, at 10:30 AM, the conference will bring together journalists, industry professionals, and yacht clients for an in-depth discussion on sustainability in yachting. This session will spotlight current environmental challenges while showcasing practical and accessible solutions that demonstrate the industry's tangible efforts. Although these innovations are tailored specifically to yachting, they hold the potential to influence other sectors, contributing to a broader approach to sustainability. Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the Monaco Yacht Show, will inaugurate the conference with an overview of the operational measures the MYS has implemented to promote sustainability, both within the event and across the industry. This conference will serve as the starting point for a series of panel discussions on innovation and sustainability, co-hosted with the specialized media outlet Superyacht Times. Throughout the MYS, these sessions will delve into cutting-edge solutions and sustainable initiatives shaping the future of the yachting industry ( see the conference agenda ).

MYS 2024 Opening conference topics

The following topics will be explored under the moderation of Justin Ratcliffe, journalist and yachting expert:

1) How to reduce the carbon footprint of older generation yachts? Speaker :  Jean-Marc Bolinger, CEO of MB92 Group

Jean-Marc Bolinger will discuss the challenges of decarbonizing the existing superyacht fleet. His presentation will also cover practical sustainability measures and how these can contribute to reducing operational costs, increased comfort, and enhanced resale value.

2) Enhancing sustainability through eco-responsible onboard practices Speaker :  Robert van Tol, Executive Director of Water Revolution Foundation

Robert van Tol will introduce the 3-R model (Repair, Replace, Reduce) and highlight how more eco-responsible behaviour onboard can improve yachting's overall environmental performance and reduce operational costs.
