Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Boat: Whitby,Evans 16 ft
launchable
#2 weekend cruiser
#2 easy to sail, or able to sail

and the rest: stable, fast roomy etc.

I know both of these are launchable but never actually beeing involved in launching something this big.

Can it be done on a daily basis ? as in come in the morning go out for the day and put it back on land at night ?
I really want to save some $$ and put this in a barn during so it being on a trailer is so important and being able to easily launch and retrieve.

Any comments or other suggestions for are appreciated. Prior to this I almost purchased a 21 , only to stop last minute as ive red mentioning its tiny "masochist", "Spartan" .

Boat: Now boatless :-(
I think they are basically the same boat except

The plumb stern of the CS would be better for me as you get a little more space for same and the is not hung so far away from the rear of the boat.

The plumb stern means the controls are closer to me when using it.

Single handing is about how the controls are set up. Really not a problem on a boat this small.

Hauling out everyday shouldn't be a drama and with the right trailer should be easy. The only consideration in your launch area - Are there overhead trees and lines that would foul the .

Ideally you would step the in the parking lot and then launch rather than use the area for stepping - especially a busy .

If hauling out both days over a weekend, I'd hate to have to step and unstep the mast each day.

Both look like nice tidy little boats. <--- Click

Boat: Whitby,Evans 16 ft
. It costs me about 700$ a season to have it in the "pen" on land. With my 16ft I have it rigged and ready to go, I just take it to the ramp and launch it.

Review of CS 22

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

CentreBoard

The CS 22 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.61 - 0.71 meter (2.00 - 2.30 ft) dependent on the load.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case the boat will typically require a power of 2 - 3 hp, alternatively 44 - 53 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

  6. CS Yachts (Canadian Sailcraft)

In 1971 CS dropped dinghy production and began building keelboats under a new name, CS Yachts. In its best year, 1986, CS built 175 30s, 33s, and 36s and the company moved to an expanded 100,000 sq. ft. facility the following year. By 1990 the company began to wind down it's production due to the diminishing demand for new boats and closed in 1992.

A couple I knew were in the market for a 22 to 24 footer. They had been avid dinghy sailors, but with two children, six and three years of age, they wanted to switch to sailing a ballasted boat. "We can afford $7,000 to $8,000, and a trailerable boat would help keep annual costs down," they advised me. I recommended the CS 22 without reservation for both monetary value and sailing enjoyment.

In comparison to the Catalina 22, the cabin extends to the full width of the boat, which provides a significant increase in cabin space. Also, although the Catalina and Tanzer are both "22" feet long, the C22 is only 21'6", while the T22 is 22'6" -- a full foot longer!
