What Is a Sail Away?

A sail away is a term used in the cruising industry to describe the departure of a cruise ship from its port of origin. It is an exciting moment that marks the beginning of a journey to new destinations, adventures, and experiences.

What happens during a Sail Away?

During a sail away, passengers gather on the deck to bid farewell to the port and watch as the ship sets sail. The atmosphere is usually charged with excitement and anticipation as passengers wave goodbye to loved ones on shore and take in the stunning views of the coastline.

As the ship moves away from port, passengers are greeted with music, entertainment, and refreshments. The cruise staff often organizes sail-away parties that include live music, dancing, and games. These events provide an opportunity for passengers to mingle with each other and get excited about their upcoming voyage.

What should you expect during a Sail Away?

If you’re planning to experience a sail away on your next cruise, here are some things you can expect:

  • Excitement: Sail aways are one of the most exciting moments of any cruise. You’ll be surrounded by fellow passengers who are just as eager to embark on their adventure as you are.
  • Refreshments: Many cruises offer complimentary drinks during sail aways. You can sip on your favorite cocktail while taking in breathtaking views of your departing port.
  • Picturesque views: As your ship sails away from port, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the coastline. Be sure to have your camera handy so you can capture these unforgettable moments.

Tips for enjoying your Sail Away

To make the most of your sail away, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Get there early:

The deck can get crowded during sail aways, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a good spot. This will give you ample time to take pictures and enjoy the festivities without feeling rushed or cramped.

Dress appropriately:

Sail aways are typically held outdoors, so it’s important to dress for the weather. If you’re sailing in colder climates, bring a jacket or sweater so you can stay warm while enjoying the festivities.

Participate in the fun:

Sail aways are a great opportunity to meet new people and have fun. Participate in the onboard activities and dance along to the music. You never know who you might meet or what memories you might create.

Our personal opinion

Why book Sail Away – ENJOYING THE WATER – Sail Away has an excellent selection of water toys and a 15ft dinghy with a 60hp motor so it is perfect for skiing or wakeboarding. Add to this, the hydraulic lift for the dinghy at the back of the boat doubles as a perfect sunbathing platform, or a place to dabble your feet in the water with a cocktail in your hand.

Rendezvous diving

yacht sailing away

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.

Our cruise on Sail Away was excellent. The boat was in great condition, very clean and well maintained. The crew of Mike, Leslie and Leanne were outstanding. They were the best and we were so sad to leave them at the end of the cruise. They went out of their way to take great care of us and the meals, etc. were superb ! It was great ! There were no improvements that I can think of. Complete satisfaction on our part ! Yes……you can use us as a reference. Best regards Bill

Praise from the broker for an early June charter on SAIL AWAY:

Just had a glowing email from my clients, I have sent them the after charter letter to fill in but this came in while waiting. ´Hello. We just returned from our BVI cruise and it was spectacular. Our crew was outstanding and we miss them already! Thanks again for all your help.´ Thank you so much for making this happen and I will forward the after letter straight away. Needless to say you are on my recommendation list!!!

The crew exceeded ALL expectations. Adrien was super chill, Vanessa was super hospitable, and Leanne, OMG her cooking was amazing. She seemed to be working the ENTIRE time. Every meal was AMAZING. We loved our experience on Sail Away! Cabins were surprisingly spacious and lots of great areas to hang out (including the bow and the very upper deck). We learned there´s a big difference between a 50 ft Cat and a 60 ft like Sail Away, we are spoiled now! The crew exceeded ALL expectations, we now believe this is the most important thing when selecting a charter. Adrien (captain), Vanessa (first mate) and Leanne (chef) were so awesome. But we must single out Leeanne, we are ´foodies´ and every meal blew us away, even the breakfasts. We hope to be back and hope for this same crew!

We recently spent 10 days aboard Sail Away with Colleen and Peter Lauber. The experience from beginning to end was seamless and transporting. First, our charter broker arranged the charter and facilitated travel plans and navigating the BVI Covid restrictions/requirements. That was a great help! The BVI are VERY Covid safe by the way. Once you do the required paperwork and testing it is fabulous to be here. So don’t let that stop you from coming!! We met Colleen and Peter at the Cay, a short ride from the airport, and off we went. We had 4 days of on-boat quarantine and, really, who could complain about beautiful bays, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking etc?! After a day 4 test and subsequent test result we hit land for our first on shore activities. Colleen and Peter, our hosts on Sail Away, were EXCELLENT in every way. They are both highly experienced sailors and know every corner of (and almost everyone in) the BVI. They took incredible care of us from charting our trip, arranging activities, and preparing delicious meals. Colleen clearly did a ton of preparation to be able to prepare gourmet dishes with ease for a group that also included gluten free vegans. And they were funny, fun, and overall great to get to know. Oh and Sail Away is gorgeous. No need for me to say more - JUST GET HERE. Carla - New York, USA

Just returned home from a fabulous family 7 day vacation aboard Vacoa. Our family consisted of 9 people ages 13, 14, 17, 18, 25, 27, 50, 59. Fun for everyone from the water activities, destinations, cocktails and the food, we could not have been happier! Captain Jason, Steward Lucy and Chef Louis, treated all of us with professionalism and enthusiasm. Every request was greeted with a smile. We can´t wait to book our next trip aboard Vacoa! Thanks again for an incredible time! Jennifer Attaway

This is the second time that we vacationed on the Vacoa with friends and we had another fabulous week with great weather in the BVI! The crew kept us busy with multiple destinations and activities daily; we loved Oil Nut Bay, Scrub Island, Bitter End and the remote bays where everyone had a blast with multiple water activities! Captain Jason did an unbelievable job keeping us very active while Chef Will was back in the kitchen preparing fantastic breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners! Lucy, the second mate, was a joy to be with, she made delicious tropical drinks, cleaned up after us and kept us entertained! A great time was had by all! Wendy M. Marco Island

We chartered Vacoa in the BVI in January of 2017 and enjoyed every minute of it. The boat is a 620 Lagoon (our second trip on the same model) and I would not charter in the BVI on any other model of boat. The fact that the top deck can accommodate all 10 guests beats any other boat in its class. The boat is in great condition and the salon and state rooms are well appointed. Jason and Team did a wonderful job and the food blew away our expectations (which were high from our previous trip on another boat). I´d recommend getting off the boat for cocktails here and there but eating on board as none of the island restaurants can match the quality and presentation of the food. They had plenty of sports equipment on board -- everything from water skis to wakeboard, to kayaks, to paddle boards, etc.... Full service boat with fantastic crew -- perfect match. Charles G. Dallas

Charter July 02-09, Tortola-Tortola

Message for the broker : I have no words (which everyone will tell you is unusual for me J)! The guests had a fabulous time on VACOA. The comments keep coming. The crew was amazing and Christine was just incredible. We ate like kings all week. Claire and Xavier were so nice and wonderful. The vacation was amazing! We loved every minute of it....the best vacation ever. It was incredible! Im ready to look for next year. Call me!

Charter June 15th- 22th 2016, Tortola-Tortola

Comment from the broker: I just wanted to send you an email and tell you how proud I am of Xavier and his crew on VACOA! He is such a pleasure to work with. My clients had the best trip ever on board with them. Thank you for all your assistance!

Charter 17th to 24th of April 2016, Tortola-Tortola

This charter was by far the best I have been on to date...maybe it was the yacht? Maybe it was the crew? Both were amazing and better than expected. The yacht´s condition was impeccable, the accommodations definitely met with our expectations, perhaps even better. We did not fully appreciate the upper deck of the yacht; I think we hung out there most of the time. We also did not realize we had a fourth crew member which was terrific! The crew was phenomenal. Xavier and Claire were so professional and accommodating to all of your wishes. Christine our chef was 5 star!! Every meal was delicious and special - what she was able to accomplish with such limited provisions was truly amazing. The final dinner our last night was a special treat - surprise Pirate Party!! Maxim was our 4th crew member and such a delight. He really took care of all of us...day or night!! The week went by so fast even though it was 7 days on a boat...we went to every location we wanted plus some. Xavier knew exactly when the best times would be for snorkeling, seeing turtles, exploring the Baths (when all of the people had left); he even knew how to keep us out of the stormy weather! We enjoyed hiking on the islands, tennis at two resorts, sailing at Bitter End and spa treatments on shore. They really did an amazing job keeping all of us happy.

Charter 19th to 26th of March 2016, Saint-Martin - Saint-Martin:

I just want to thank you for your advice and organization of my charter onboard VACOA during our Easter break. We had a fantastic tour onboard a great boat, run by a very professional, knowledgable and service minded crew. My family and I enjoyed every minute and we will certainly come back in not too distant future. I can easily recommend this boat with existing crew to anyone that want to have a time of their life experience. Thank you

Charter 24th to 31th of January 2016 - Tortola - Tortola

Just a quick check in after a most delightful week on the water with great friends and a fantastic crew! The chef Christine was also over the top on professional skills and food quality/presentation, and always pleasant and open to teaching us about her dishes and how they were prepared. As a business owner myself, I know it is important to get prompt and direct feedback and consider this a 100+ score, simply blew us away! It goes without saying that the captain and crew had our comfort and hospitality in mind 24/7; and clearly a crack sailing team.

Charter 08th to 18th of December 2015, St Vincent-Grenada

Well done! The Vacoa and crew were perfect for our team of six non-adventurers. I have already recommended them to other friends. I know we will be in touch again next year.

Charter 25th of November - 2nd of December 2015 Tortola-Tortola

My clients had a wonderful time aboard VACOA. Thank you very much to you and your excellent crew for an excellent charter!

Charter 9th -16th May 2015 - St Marteen to St Barth

Cordialmente.

Charter 19th-26th April 2015 - St Marteen

Feedback from the broker : I finally got ahold of M. XXX to get a report on their sailing vacation in St Martin with Xavier and Clare and Christine on VACOA and he has only superlatives for the boat, crew and experience. He was ecstatic about the food, the service, Xaviers energy and flexibility with doing water sports with the kids, playing DJ and helping guide the itinerary choices. They said they would charter that boat again with that crew.

Charter 5 -13 April 15 - Tortola

Our charter has been sensational! Xavier is very skilled and knowledgeable, first mate Claire has been wonderful, and chef Manuela extraordinary, fabulous cuisine. All of the crew work well together. Susan and I speak French with them, some Italian with Manuela, but they are all fluent in English. They have been particularly patient and helpful with the grandchildren. The boat itself is super, but the setup of the bathrooms could be better, which has nothing to do with the crew, of course. I am glad that we held out for VACOA .

Charter Sicily Islands 23-31th of August 2015

I have just talked with the client, she is plenty satisfied with their cruise on board of MAITAS. The captain Marco and his crew has work very hard to offer to all the party an unforgettable cruise. They have appreciated their professionalism, the discretion , the long experience and the excellent cousin . I want thank all the Team , I will give only super positive feedback on the boat and I hope to have soon other clients.

Sail Away Catamarans

Overnight in Annapolis or Saint Michaels

There’s nothing quite like sleeping and waking up aboard a gently rocking boat.

Sailing aboard a luxury catamaran can be wonderful in and of itself. But sleeping and waking up aboard one can be absolutely magical. One of our captains can take you out sailing all day on the Chesapeake Bay and then catch a mooring ball in historic Annapolis or St. Michaels. The captain will get you secured for the night and then catch the water taxi leaving the boat to you and your group to enjoy privately. Catch the water taxi into town to enjoy a restaurant and some cocktails and then taxi back out to your catamaran to retreat for the night. The captain will arrive the next morning to take you sailing for the day and return back to our docks.

40 Sailing Phrases to Know

By: American Sailing American Sailing , Nautical Trivia , Sailing Fun , Sailing History

In 1983, the American Sailing Association was founded by Lenny Shabes. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of sailors have become certified sailors with the ASA sailing curriculum. This year, we celebrate 40 years as the leading sailing education entity in the United States. So when you get out on the water, you can be sure that ASA-certified sailors are sailing safely and confidently.

Sailors have a way of speaking, and the sport has its own language. Some sailing phrases are common in everyday language, while others are only really used on a sailboat. The ones common in our everyday language have a nautical origin that will make you a more enlightened sailor, as well. The ones used only on a sailboat? Well, the sailing lifestyle lends itself to a specific language to describe situations and offer comedic relief when we are at the mercy of the conditions, and those will make you smarter and more adaptable in real life as well.

With that, we want to offer 40 sailing phrases you should know, some of which you may already be acquainted with.

Enjoy these sailing phrases, and may the best sailor win at nautical trivia night!

  • Batten Down the Hatches – a phrase used to prepare for a storm, or in everyday language, prepare for a difficult upcoming situation.
  • Aye Aye, Captain – a form of ”aye aye, sir”. It literally means “yes, yes” and is used in the military to show that the person who says it will follow an order that has been given and will follow it before doing anything else. It also shows the person knows the order and what it is requiring him or her to do.
  • Fair Winds and Following Seas – a phrase derived from two original sources that has become a nautical blessing used to wish someone good luck on their journey. Fair winds speak to favorable winds that will carry you home, and following seas speak to the direction of the waves generally pushing you in the direction of your heading.
  • Sheet Happens – a humorous phrase used when something goes wrong on a sailing trip. Sheets are the lines that trim sails.
  • Ship-shape and Bristol Fashion – a term used to describe something that is in good order or condition. The word is of nautical origin, based on the obligation of a sailor to keep his or her quarters arranged neatly and securely due to the limited space typically allotted to service members aboard ship, and against turbulence at sea. Bristol fashion refers to the port’s days as a bustling port of trade.
  • All Hands on Deck – During a storm or other crises, the boatswain’s cry of “all hands on deck” signaled the entire crew to handle the sail. These days it is an entreaty or order for everyone to pitch in and help with a problem or reach a goal.
  • Shiver Me Timbers – in everyday language, an exclamation of surprise or excitement. In nautical terms, a reference to the timbers, which are the wooden support frames of a sailing ship. In heavy seas, ships would be lifted up and pounded down so hard as to “shiver” the timbers, startling the sailors.
  • Walk the Plank – Sailors, usually pirates, set a plank that would hang off the ship’s side and made the punished sailors walk to the end and meet their death in the ocean. Today it’s a metaphor for receiving a punishment or facing a situation beyond one’s control.
  • Keel Over – a term used to describe a boat tipping over on its side so far that it capsizes or turns turtle. In every day language, it refers to someone tumbling or falling over.
  • Even Keel – The phrase even keel describes a ship that is level and balanced with its keel perpendicular to the surface of the water. Figuratively it has come to mean a calm, stable state of mind. The opposite is to keel over meaning to capsize.
  • Taken Aback – A ship is pushed backward when violent winds or a careless helmsman cause the sails to blow rearward against the mast. This sudden predicament could snap the mast or severely damage the rigging. As a figure of speech, taken aback means to be astonished by some unwelcome occurrence.
  • Three Sheets to the Wind – a term used to describe someone who is drunk. The sheets are the lines that control the sails on a sailboat. If the lines are not secured — particularly the three which are the two jib sheets and the mainsheet — the sails flop in the wind, and the ship loses headway and control, like a drunk person.
  • Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea – The “devil” was the topmost plank of the ship’s side closest to the deck. Caulking this long seam in the tight space was a grueling task. One false move and a sailor could find himself plunging into the water. Today someone between the devil and the deep blue sea is in a lousy situation with no good options.
  • Let the Cat Out of the Bag – A whip composed of nine pieces of cord with three knots at the striking end, the cat-o’-nine-tails was one of the authorized instruments of punishment in the British Navy until 1881. It was kept in a cloth bag. A sailor who reported the misdeeds of another let the cat out of the bag.
  • Scuttlebutt – a nautical term for a water dispenser, but also a term used for gossip or rumors on board a ship. A “butt” was a large wooden drinking water cask where sailors gathered around and swapped rumors and stories. On long voyages, water was rationed by carving a hole in the cask’s side so that it could only be half filled. A cask with a hole was “scuttled.” Not much has changed except we now gossip around a water cooler.
  • Anchors Aweigh – a phrase used to describe the moment when an anchor is lifted from the seabed; colloquially it also has come to mean the beginning of a journey.
  • A Bone in Her Teeth – a term used to describe a boat that is moving fast through the water creating a prominent bow wave that looks similar to a dog with a bone in its mouth. Has also come to mean someone who is in a hurry.
  • Tide Over – To tide over was the technique of alternating between sailing and anchoring when battling headwinds and unfavorable tides. This allowed a boat to hold its position until conditions improved. The term now describes enabling someone to get through a difficult period, most commonly by lending money, or with a child, to give a snack to tide them over until dinner.
  • Sailing Close to the Wind – a term used to describe sailing as close to the direction of the wind as possible (any further and you would be in irons and unable to progress). Figuratively, this phrase means to be on the verge of doing something illegal or improper.
  • Cast Off – a term used to describe releasing a mooring line or anchor so a vessel can set sail; in everyday language means to “set free”, for obvious reasons!
  • Dead Reckoning – used in a navigation sense primarily; a method of navigation based on estimating a ship’s position using previous positions and estimated speed and direction of travel
  • Helm’s Alee – a command used when starting to turn the boat through the wind, i.e. tacking. Primarily used on a sailboat, but also an American rock band that started in the early 2000’s in Seattle.
  • Square-rigged, and Squared Away – a term used to describe a ship with square sails. To be squared away, a square-rigged ship had its yards (horizontal bars that held up the sail) positioned at right angles to the deck to best catch the wind. Squared away now means to put things in order or a state of readiness.
  • A Shot Across the Bow – in everyday language, a warning or threat issued to someone. In the 18th century, navies forced oncoming ships to identify themselves by firing a cannon shot over their bow. If the approaching ship hoisted enemy colors an attack might ensue. Traditionally warships had the right to disguise themselves by sailing under neutral or false flags, but once they went into battle they were required to fly their country’s true colors.
  • Crow’s Nest – a platform located high on a mast used as a lookout point. The term is sometimes used metaphorically for the topmost structures in buildings, towers, etc.
  • Jibe Ho – a command spoken when jibing, and the sailboat is heading downwind and across the wind. It is a warning to sit down or be clear of the boom before it swings!
  • Lower the Boom – The boom is the long horizontal pole that controls the movement of the mainsail. It can deliver sailors a knockout blow if it swings wildly or collapses in heavy weather. These days the phrase means to put a stop to, chastise, or rebuke.
  • Headwinds – winds blowing in the opposite direction of the ship’s movement; has also come to mean resistance or opposition to a plan, often referred to as “economic headwinds” in business.
  • Sea Legs – the ability to adjust to the motion of a ship and maintain balance; To “have one’s sea legs” is to be able to walk calmly and steadily on a tossing ship, or to become accustomed to a new or strange situation
  • Run Aground; or High and Dry – to be run aground is when the bottom of the boat hits the sea floor and stops the boat. For a ship to run aground in a receding tide is to be left high and dry. Getting stuck with the check when everyone else has taken off is also to be left high and dry.
  • Dead in the Water – when there is no wind and the water is completely still, giving no chance of any sailing. The phrase also means a proposal or plan with zero chance of success.
  • Fathom – a unit of measurement for depth, equal to six feet. This nautical unit of measurement is based on the span of a man’s outstretched arms. The word comes from the Old English “faedem,” to embrace. Sailors measured ocean depths, anchor chains, ropes, and cables in fathoms. Although marines eventually abandoned fathoms for meters, we onshore still reach for the word fathom to express our ability to comprehend, grasp, or get to the bottom of things.
  • Gunwale – the upper edge of the side of a boat, pronounced “gunnel”, named for where the guns on a ship would sit. To be “full to the gunnels” means to be completely full.
  • In Irons – A sailing vessel is “in irons” when she is trapped in the “No Go Zone”, unable to bear away and begin sailing. The term dates from when criminals aboard old sailing ships were secured to the deck with leg-irons, unable to move.
  • Kedge – a smaller anchor used to move the ship slowly in a desired direction. Used primarily in nautical situations, but can be adapted to mean a clever way of moving in a direction when the obvious method won’t work.
  • The Cut of One’s Jib – “Jib” is the name of the foresail that controls the general performance of a ship. In everyday life, it also means the way one looks or conducts themselves (usually negative).
  • Cup of Joe – The days of rum, beer, and officers’ personal wine supply dried up with the appointment of Josephus Daniels as Secretary of the Navy. In 1914 this stern Methodist and prohibitionist banned “…the use or introduction for drinking purposes of alcoholic liquors on board any naval vessel, or within any navy yard or station.” As a substitute, stewards increased orders for coffee. Naval lore has it that the disgruntled sailors tagged the poor substitute “cup of Josephus Daniels,” and later the shorter “cup of Joe.” That’s one theory, anyway, but one thing we know — any day, aboard a ship or not, deserves its properly caffeinated start!
  • Groundswell – Deep ocean waves grow larger as they move over uneven seabeds and are felt as surface undulations. Colloquially, the term describes a widespread surge of public opinion.
  • It’s an Ill Wind that Blows No Good – While a sailor could be frustrated by an unfavorable wind, it might be a great wind for a sailor going another direction. This translates into everyday life to mean that what’s bad for one person may be good for another.
  • Know the Ropes – Old, tall ships had miles of rigging. Today’s sailboats also have quite a lot of line. Each serves a purpose, and it’s critical for sailors to correctly identify each one. Securing or unlashing the wrong line at the wrong time could be catastrophic, or at least cause you to lose the regatta. In sailing and in real life, to be well versed and familiar is to know the ropes.

Sail Away: The Oral History of ‘Yacht Rock’

By Drew Toal

This story was originally published on June 26, 2015

I n the late 1970s and early 1980s, musical artists like Kenny Loggins , Michael McDonald , Steely Dan , Toto , Hall and Oates , and dozens of others regularly popped up on each other’s records, creating a golden era of smooth-music collaboration.

And on June 26th, 2005, an internet phenomenon was born. In 12 short but memorable episodes — first via the the short-film series Channel 101 and then online — JD Ryznar, Hunter Stair, Dave Lyons, Lane Farnham and their friends redefined an era and coined a term for the sultry croonings of McDonald, Fagen, et al.: “yacht rock.”

As “Hollywood” Steve might say, these guys docked a fleet of remarkable hits. This is the story of Yacht Rock, told from stem to stern — a reimagining of a bygone soft-rock renaissance, courtesy of hipsters with fake mustaches, impeccable record collections and a love of smoothness. Long may it sail.

The Michigan Connection JD Ryznar (Director, “Michael McDonald”): I moved from Ann Arbor to L.A., and ended up making friends with all these other guys from Michigan, like “Hollywood” Steve Huey, Hunter Stair, and David Lyons. Pretty much every weekend I’d have “Chinese Thanksgiving” at my apartment — we’d eat BBQ chicken and burgers, drink beer and listen to records of what I called “yacht rock.” You know, like Michael McDonald is singing background vocals and like there’s guys on boats on the covers; it feels like you’re on a yacht listening to it. And the guys were like, oh, we know this music.

Dave Lyons (“Koko”): You know how, in the Seventies, these big bands started playing arena rock? We liked the idea of these smooth bands playing “Marina Rock.” I thought it was a better name.

“Hollywood” Steve Huey (“Hollywood Steve”): What I mostly remember is JD playing Journey records all the time. He was so into Journey that he had photocopied a photo of Steve Perry and pasted it onto his liquid soap dispenser. He wrote “Steve Perry Soap: Clean as all fuck” on it.

Editor’s picks

The 100 best tv episodes of all time, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024.

Lane Farnham (editor, “Jimmy Messina”): JD and I had talked about Journey for a year before we did Yacht Rock. In the third episode, that whole “you need to fly like a pilot” bit? Those are direct lines from Steve Perry in this crazy documentary we found. He’s coked to the gills, in the Eighties, just blabbering about who knows what. We got a kick out of that stuff.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is facing cancellation rumors after Gary King’s scandalous behavior continues to push viewers away from the series, and producers scramble to fix their mistakes . While some are excited for the idea of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 , many are concerned about the show returning with Gary still part of the cast. Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht ’s run, the spin-off has been one of the more interesting iterations of the series. Following the crew of Captain Glenn Shephard’s Parsifal III, the spin-off of the original Below Deck features a more consistent crew of specialized sailing yachties.

While Gary has been part of Below Deck Sailing Yacht ’s cast for most of its run, others have also been familiar to the crew of the Parsifal III. Daisy Kelliher and Colin MacRae, who found themselves in a love triangle with Gary during Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 , have been a major part of the series along with the controversial First Officer. Although Gary has been part of the crew for most of its run, his behavior has always been an issue for Below Deck viewers, and the scandal he’s embroiled in now could potentially get the show canceled .

Gary’s Scandalous Behavior Has Always Been An Issue

He’s never been great to women.

Although Gary ’s behavior in recent years has been worse than ever, things have always been touch-and-go regarding Gary and the level of respect he has for women. While Gary has always been clear that his behavior isn’t predatory , the way he behaves toward the women on the crew of Parsifal III as well as the guests hasn’t been the most comfortable. Gary’s reputation has been questionable for years, but things have escalated in recent years.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

While Gary’s been called a playboy for the majority of his time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht, he was finally called out for his behavior after the most recent season of the series. During the BDSY season 4 reunion, he was questioned about his relationship with Daisy, as well as the way he behaved toward Mads Herrera and Lucy Edmunds , who didn’t seem entirely comfortable with Gary’s actions. Eschewing any allegations of misbehavior away, Gary did his best to play coy about the fact that he was openly making women uncomfortable.

The Sexual Misconduct Against Gary Took The Drama To Another Level

His behavior hasn’t been well received.

After Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 came to a close, sexual misconduct allegations about Gary and a Below Deck franchise makeup artist came to light. The makeup artist, Samantha Suarez, alleged that Gary was aggressive with her, making her uncomfortable while she was trying to do her job and get him ready for filming. While the account is difficult to read, the behavior does seem like something Gary would do given his behavior in the past. Gary has maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal, and Below Deck hasn’t seemed to penalize him, nor have they given a public statement.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Producers Have Allowed Gary To Get Away With Too Much

Will they be able to fix their mistakes.

Although Bravo removed Gary from their BravoCon lineup in 2023, there is already another season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht filmed with Gary in the cast and may be released in the coming months. Since Below Deck producers have had some issues with sexual misconduct in the last year, there has been a lot of talk about how they need to address their problems internally, but Gary being part of Below Deck Sailing Yacht makes it hard to make any strides in the right direction. By allowing Gary to get away with poor behavior, t hey’re unable to make genuine change .

Luxury Yacht Rental in Russia

Luxury yacht charter guide to russia.

From beautiful ballet and classical music in the capital to the ice clad bear rich far flung reaches of the North, Russia is always a rare experience. Nowhere in the world has captured such a sweeping variety and as the largest continent it makes sense that every corner should tell a completely different storey. Still, what connects Russia from city to country, north to south, mountain to ocean, is its fairytale like landscapes and mythologically rich ways of life. From bear festivals and volcanoes in Kamchatka to the golden domes and dreams of Moscow, the rugged natural bliss of the Urals, and the remote archipelagos of the northwest, Russia is always a riddle.

Reasons to Charter a Yacht in Russia

Sacred places.

Majestic Russia is never a destination to shy away from grandeur. While the monolith continent spreads all the way from the balmy bright Mediterranean to the chill winds of the Arctic, a yacht charter to every corner takes you to sacred places. Ancient fortresses, elaborate ruins, leafy parks, traditional villages, and cobalt blue waters will take you sailing around the remote shores of Russia’s rare northwest where history, mythology, and edge of the world storeys are sure to seep into your soul. Back in the big cities and its art, culture, and high society living.

Natural Splendour

A world of mountains, lakes, and forests with barely another soul in sight – parts of Russia (like the Urals) offer a quintessential back to nature experience that few have had the pleasure of soaking up. For those who desire to drink up cold and clear air, kayak around lost lakes, have the choice of a thousand mountain trails, and stumble through diamond bright subterranean ice caves, you will be spoilt for choice in Russia’s mountains and far reaching corners.

Indigenous Culture

Surrounded by rings of fire, bears, and ice, the people of Far East Russia have had quite a time carving out their life on these shores. The indigenous culture of the Far East brings rich heritage, ancient ritual, and deep-set traditions, from the Ainu people to the Nivks, and the Koryaks, for centuries they have made their home upon the harsh land. The Nivks are semi nomadic folk who pay worship to the bear and hold an annual festival to celebrate this fact. The Ainu have a strong musical heritage and elaborate tattoos. And the Koryak place emphasis on the reindeer as being one of the most important animals in their lives.

Where to Visit in Russia

Sheer majesty marks Moscow on the map as being the cultural epicentre of Russia. From its impressively ornate skyline flecked with golden domes to its historic café culture and rich history, there is so much to see and do. The Kremlin and the Red Square will woo any history buff, as will the many communist state remains scattered throughout. The city is also home to no less than six hundred churches all adorned in orthodox finery. For those yacht charter guests hoping to fill their hours with beautiful ballet performances, ice cold vodka, chandeliers and caviar, Moscow is trimmed with luxury.

Kamchatka is out of this world bringing dreamy yacht charter scenes of bears standing against volcanic backdrops and skies every shade of lavender. With a peninsula rinsed by the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea, Kamchatka offers amazing water exploration where you can kayak alongside killer whales and surf the easy peelers of the pacific. Kamchatka is sheer outdoor adventure; climb a volcano, snorkel with seals, and take dramatic helicopter flights over spitting geysers deep in the volcanic laced interior.

Solovetsky Island

Sitting in the equally mystical sounding White Sea, the Solovetsky Islands are a far-flung remote archipelago boasting six main islands and hundreds of lakes. There’s a gloriously impressive fort and monastery standing proud on the main island and traditional village settlements that invite you to enjoy intimate encounters with the locals. The monastery is a UNESCO heritage site and still home to a handful of monks. The backdrop from which the islands shine is a mediaeval tapestry of woodlands, wilderness, empty bays, and big skies.

Ural Mountains

From the Arctic Ocean across to Kazakhstan, the Ural Mountains ripple like the backbone of Russia, stretching on for no less than 2.5 thousand kilometres. Mighty, untouched, and cleaving Europe and Asia in half, the Urals can be daunting to discover. But for those yacht charter guests intrepid enough to make the journey, you will be treated to a whirlwind of blue lakes, old Russian orthodox churches, holy mountains, not to mention rivers and ice caves that could put even the most vivid fantasy landscapes to shame.

When to Charter a Yacht in Russia

The summer months are the only times when sailing to the remote corner of Russia are possible. This is a land that suffers harsh winters and white night summers. Between the months of May and September but closer to the summer peak (mid-July) means that you are able to enjoy ambient temperatures and a wealth of awakened wildlife.

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.
