SAILING YACHT A – World’s Biggest Sailing Yacht – $600 Million

SAILING YACHT A measures 143 meters making her the world’s biggest sailing yacht.

SAILING YACHT A is far more than a luxury vessel. She is a masterpiece of design and innovation combining sleek metal surfaces with futuristic naval architecture that took over two years to complete.

Launched in 2017, both the interior and exterior of this mega sailing yacht were designed by Phillippe Starck, who calls SAILING YACHT A one of his most high-profile projects.

The superyacht has taken on voyages all around the world and was most recently spotted sailing off the coasts of Gibraltar and Cyprus.

SAILING YACHT A interior

Both the interior and exterior of SAILING YACHT A were designed by Philippe Starck , a French architect known for his wide range of design projects.

He famously worked on the impressive MOTOR YACHT A, and the two iconic vessels share a lot of similarities in their layout and specifications.

Both yachts look incredibly futuristic and are sure to attract attention wherever they go.

While no exact details are known about the interior of SAILING YACHT A, it is rumored that she has an underwater observation pod with 30 cm (1 ft) thick glass located in the keel of the vessel.

This is one of the few parts where design mockups are publicly available, and the style of the interior can be examined.

The observation pod appears to have cream upholstery that stretches across the floor and ceiling of the cabin.

Two large symmetrical glass windows allow guests to view the breathtaking underwater world without even having to leave the yacht.

A third window is located at the bottom of the pod, which lets it feel like a true 360-degree experience and is almost comparable to a submarine.

A small floating side table provides guests with a space to place drinks or snacks in the pod and enjoy a one-of-a-kind dining experience in this unusual location.

Since the pod is located at the keel of the yacht, the large propellers are most likely visible from the windows suggesting it is most commonly used at anchor.

The superyacht has ten cabins that can accommodate 20 guests as well as a further 54 crew member.

Paparazzi photos and the work of yacht spotters provide a rare glimpse into the interior of SAILING YACHT A.

No official footage of cabins or salons has been released, although Starck’s past work suggests that the yacht would be furnished with opulent elements that perfectly combine luxury with style.

Silver and metal decorations play a large role and tie the interior design of the yacht together.

However, SAILING YACHT A was launched much later than her motorized companion suggesting her interior might be more modern with minimalistic elements rather than lavish furnishings.

Occasional photographs shot through open doors, and portholes show expensive art pieces decorating the interior of the yacht and rather absurd design choices like a set of chairs shaped like large human heads.

The yacht appears to feature a large, open salon with an elevated seating area and symmetrical arches on either side.

While details aren’t known to the public, it is rumored that SAILING YACHT A features a luxurious spa area, a sizable gym as well as an owner’s suite with several rooms that is only accessible via fingerprint.

The massive private area is said to feature a 60-inch television that disappears into the floor as well as a rotating bed.

Considering she is the largest sailing yacht in the world, it is surprising that SAILING YACHT A can only host 20 guests.

This suggests that there are spacious entertainment areas located on board, including several saloons and ample below-deck space for crew members.

Due to her large size and a small number of cabins, it is assumed that SAILING YACHT A can welcome a large number of day guests onboard for special events and celebrations.

Biggest sailing yacht controversy

It has been the topic of debate that SAILING YACHT A is not the largest yacht in the world but instead the ‘largest sail-assisted motor yacht.

Depending on the definition used, that would make BLACK PEARL the biggest sailing yacht in the world.

Sailing Yacht A Blohm VOSS SV2

The most expensive sailing yacht

SAILING YACHT A is the most expensive sailing yacht in the world and cost an estimated price of US $600 million – a relatively “affordable” price considering her large size and tonnage.

A calculated US $48,000 per ton is considered low in the yachting industry, where European yachts are usually priced at US $60,000 per ton and over.

This average price would bring the value of SAILING YACHT A up to nearly US $800 million. However, due to the fact that the official sales price has not been released to the public, these numbers are mere estimates and cannot be validated officially.

Since the yacht is a custom project and one of a kind, it can be assumed that the total value of SAILING YACHT A lies far higher than her initial price.

In addition to any cost for the crew, supplies, and docking fees, she has annual running costs of US $50-75 million.

SAILING YACHT A is currently not available for sale or charter.

Specifications

SAILING YACHT A is incredibly large for a sailing yacht, and even compared to the longest motor yachts in the world, she would rank in the top ten.

Paired with her unusual futuristic design, this mega sailing yacht has a length of 143 meters (469 ft), a beam of 25 meters (82 ft), and a draft of 8 meters (26 ft) making her a more than an impressive vessel.

SAILING YACHT A was built by Nobiskrug , a German superyacht builder at their Kiel shipyard, and launched in 2017 after more than two years of construction.

To date, SAILING YACHT A is the largest yacht ever built by Nobiskrug and remains their flagship.

It is considered the most complicated project to ever be completed in the sailing industry and gained international media attention on its launch date. It has a total volume of 12.558 tons and is powered by hybrid diesel-electric engines.

SAILING YACHT A is considered the longest sailing yacht in the world and is more than 36 meters (118 ft) longer than BLACK PEARL, which ranks in second place on the list.

Coincidentally her project name was WHITE PEARL which is a reference to her brilliant white exterior, although it couldn’t have referred to BLACK PEARL since she was only launched in 2018, a year after Melnichenko’s masterpiece.

Her three-carbon masts stand at an impressive 100 meters (328 ft), making them some of the largest in the world and taller than Big Ben in London.

However, her large size is sometimes also limiting as she struggles to fit underneath most bridges and is therefore constrained to certain routes.

She once passed under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with only 20 feet to spare between her masts and the bottom of the famous bridge.

She is rumored to have an electric gimbal crow’s nest, which allows for remote operation and advanced wind measurements. Her sails are all white, and her masts have nearly sickle-like shapes, which add to her striking futuristic appearance.

It is noteworthy that she is commonly photographed with her sails down, which suggests she might be using her support engines more frequently than true wind power.

With a sail area of more than 3.700m^2 (40.000 square ft), she can reach top speeds of up to 21 knots which is supported by her twin 4895 Horsepower MTU engines .

Her average cruise speed lies at 16 knots, and her total range is estimated to lie at 5320 nautical miles. She features a state-of-the-art sail system that is able to raise and lower the sails and anchors at the touch of a button.

SAILING YACHT A has a steel hull and composite steel superstructure, which is unusual in the superyacht industry as most shipyards choose aluminum to reduce weight and keep the vessel light.

She currently sails under the flag of Bermuda, which is common for prominent sailing yachts.

sailing yacht a tender 2

During construction, SAILING YACHT A was called project WHITE PEARL, a fitting name for this sizable vessel.

Like her interior, the exterior of SAILING YACHT A was designed by Philippe Starck, although the Dutch studio Dykstra Naval Architects played a role in the naval architecture of the vessel.

They specialize in sailing yachts of all sizes and have been involved in many prominent projects in the industry over the years.

She features eight teak decks with a large swimming pool located in the center and several elevators spread across the yacht.

She is even said to carry a submarine. The main pool is lowered into the deck allowing for additional privacy for the owners.

Her hull has 24 shell doors, which are used to access equipment and provide additional deck space if needed. She is accompanied by four tenders also designed by Philippe Starck and built by Lloyd Stevenson in New Zealand.

Their sleek and elegant design matches that of the main vessel, and they are used for transporting guests and taking them on excursions.

One of the tenders of SAILING YACHT A is a carbon fiber speedboat especially reserved for the owner who can operate the vessel autonomously whenever required without the aid of crew members.

This allows Melnichenko, who is a fan of driving high-speed cars to be independent when staying aboard his luxury yacht. The tender is small but powerful, reaching speeds of up to 53 knots.

The larger tenders can seat up to eight passengers and feature panoramic windows ideal for sightseeing and exploring but are much slower at only 30 knots.

The aft features a large garage used for storing jet skis, tenders, and other equipment.

High-profile artists such as Snoop Dogg are rumored to have performed here, although detailed evidence of such concerts remains unknown.

Whenever the aft isn’t used for performances or parties, it can be transformed into a swimming platform designed in the yacht’s iconic futuristic style.

However, despite her cutting-edge design features, SAILING YACHT A surprisingly also includes classic nautical elements. She has a wooden steering wheel that is reminiscent of a pirate ship, although it is not operational.

The captain of the vessel can instead use modern technologies to operate the massive yacht via a small joystick and touchscreen.

There are symmetric extendable balconies that protrude from the bridge of the yacht and allow the crew to have a better view to be able to gauge the dimensions of the immense vessel.

Of course, SAILING YACHT A has a modern underwater lighting system that illuminates the vessel perfectly at night.

Where in the world: Top superyacht locations this week

The global superyacht fleet is always on the move. Using BOAT Pro’s pioneering AIS fleet tracker , we keep an eye on the furthest flung superyachts of the week .

Nord in the Seychelles

The 142 metre Nord is undoubtedly one of the most notable launches of the past few years. She became Lürssen's biggest build to date when she hit the water in 2021 and has continued to turn heads with her sheer size, squared-off bow and striking duo-tone hull and superstructure. After a summer well spent cruising in the Mediterranean, Nord made her way to the Maldives in time for Christmas and is now sitting pretty in the Seychelles, anchored off from its capital Victoria.

Lusine in London

At 60 metres in length, the Heesen motor yacht Lusine is the largest steel superyacht to be built by Heesen and was spotted cruising into the mouth of the River Thames on February 14. She is one of a string of new European builds that have arrived in London in the past few months to be delivered. Lusine was built under the name Project Falcon and recently completed intensive sea trials in the North Sea, reaching a top speed of 17.7 knots.

La Datcha in Peru

The 77 metre polar expedition yacht La Datcha has made her way back up the South American coastline after spending the winter season doing what she does best - exploring the frozen fields of Antarctica. Equipped with an ice classed hull and helicopter, La Datcha has been to-ing and fro-ing between Ushuaia and Antarctica over the past few months but is now enjoying the warmer waters of Peru.

Arbema in Cuba

Arbema , previously known as Azteca , came under new ownership in 2021 in one of the biggest sales of the year. The 72 metre CRN superyacht was snapped up after just three months on the market and her new owner has naturally been spending the winter season cruising the Caribbean. She was most recently spotted pulling into Havana, Cuba.

Azamanta in Bermuda

The unmistakable bronze hull of the 55 metre Heesen Azamanta has been spotted pulling into port in Bermuda. She was delivered in 2015 as the first in the Dutch shipyard's 55 Steel series and has been under private ownership ever since. Azamanta 's cruising calendar is often dictated by the seasons - summers in the Mediterranean and winters in the Caribbean - but an ice-reinforced steel hull means she can travel wherever she pleases.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Winter Park police warn of delays on Wymore Road due to investigation

3 advisories in effect for flagler, coastal, inland region, getting results, deland historian searching for a permanent location to display world war ii tugboat, dan friend says it’s his quest to find a home for the historic tug boat nicknamed ‘tiger’.

Paul Giorgio , Producer

DeLand, Fla. – A trip down the St. Johns River can be like going back in time. And for Dan Friend, the clock stops in 1944.

Friend sat at the front of a pontoon boat as it glided across the glassy surface of Lake Beresford in DeLand.

“It’s always fun to visit Tiger,” he said as the pilot house of a vintage World War II-era tugboat could be seen poking up above the tree line ahead.

“Tiger” is ST 479, one of 29 tugboats built in the 1940s on Lake Beresford by the American Manufacturing Corporation in Orlando as part of the war effort.

[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos ]

“Tiger has come home after 80 some years, and we’re extremely happy to have it,” Friend said, pulling up beside the 86-foot-long vessel.

The retired history teacher has become perhaps the world’s best, and only, expert on these World War II tugboats. His research started 12 years ago when he found what turned out to be a builder’s plaque from another DeLand tugboat (ST 679) in an antique shop.

Friend knew exactly what it was, but didn’t realize then how much it would direct his life moving forward.

“It’s interesting to say this, but this boat has kind of taken over my life,” Friend said. “This project has a mind of its own.”

ST 479 and a fleet of more than 70 other tugboats are believed to have been used to move equipment after the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France.

“The tugs were used to haul bits of the portable docks, the mulberries, over to Omaha Beach,” Friend said. “There was a constant stream of tugboats bringing parts and bits of pieces of all the portable docks over.”

Friend says documentation for these boats was destroyed long ago, but he believes there is a good chance this one played an integral part in the war effort.

“Believe it or not, this is the original anchor mechanism,” Friend said as he leaned against a giant set of gears and cables rusting after being exposed to years of sea air.

Tiger is temporarily anchored in Beresford Bend, less than a mile from where it was built.

Friend is working tirelessly to find a location where the ship can be taken out of the water and permanently displayed as a monument to local World War II history.

ST 479 “Tiger” was found three years ago decaying in a canal in Stockholm, Sweden. After a lot of hard work, and fundraising, friend and the West Volusia Historical Society were able to ship it back across the Atlantic where he hopes it will be restored.

It’s one of only a handful known to still be around.

“This is the only one that was still original, it made all the difference in the world to us in terms of a collectible,” Friend said, adding that it still had its original Clark diesel engine in place.

But years on the water have taken their toll.

“The entire superstructure has bits and pieces of rust, this is the worst. It’s not leaking but rust never sleeps,” Friend said, pointing to prominent holes in the side of the “super structure” of the ship.

Restoration efforts can’t start until it’s taken out of the water.

“We’re three years into it and I have no idea how much longer it’s going to take, but we’re going to keep plugging along until we make it happen,” he said.

Friend’s latest effort is a letter-writing campaign to state officials. He’s asking for public lands where “Tiger” can be displayed.

He’s hoping for a state grant or private donations to help with funding.

“Every time I come on board I feel like saying ‘Hello’ to the ghosts of all the men that were here,” Friend said, looking out from the pilot room.

After years of chasing the past, Friend’s focus is now on the future.

“I just wish I had a clearer vision on exactly how this is going to play out,” he said. “It’s been in the water 80 years so it’s time to bring her out.”

Hero mum and baby survived superyacht sinking after falling asleep on deck, doctor claims

By Danielle de Wolfe

A British mother and her baby who survived the sinking of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily made it out alive because of their location, a doctor has revealed.

Listen to this article

Charlotte Golunski, 35, survived the sinking of superyacht Bayesian as she clung onto her 1-year-old baby girl after the boat was struck by a freak tornado just after 5am on Monday.

The Brit was picked up alongside fourteen others in a life raft, after the vessel disappeared beneath the waves.

Now, it's been revealed that the mother was in fact asleep on the deck at the time of the tornado.

The head of paediatric care at the Di Cristina Children's Hospital in Palermo, who treated the pair, has now revealed that Ms Golunski was away from her partner at the time of the storm.

The mother and child survived, sustaining only bruises in the tragedy, with her partner, James Emsley - who was asleep on the other side of the ship at the time of the tornado - also surviving.

"She said that she was sleeping with the child on deck while her husband was a little further away in another part of the boat and she felt the oscillations of the ship," Dr Domenico Cipolla told Sky news.

"In an instant it was dark and she found herself in the water in just a few minutes.

"She said she tried to hold on to the child but lost the child from her grip for three seconds," the doctor revealed.

The Oxford graduate was aboard the boat celebrating Mr Lynch’s acquittal in an $11 billion (£8.5 billion) fraud case.

The tragedy left one man dead - Chef Recaldo Thomas - with another six, including Mr Lynch, still missing, as divers continue to search the sunken vessel.

Ms Golunski was among 22 people on board the vessel when a freak tornado struck it off the coast of Palmero, with Italian outlets describing how she held her daughter Sofia "afloat with all [her] strength".

"The little girl was crying, she was very disoriented, she looked around and her mother was very sad and worried, especially for her husband who was in another hospital," Dr Cipolla said.

"She wanted to know if everything was OK and asked after the missing people because nobody knew what happened to them."

She was crying. She was very sad, she kept asking us about her husband and the others."

Mr Emsley, who was treated at another hospital, "hugged and comforted" the mother and child when reunited, the doctor explained.

Ms Golunski was said to be "very sad" for those still missing.

It comes as the search for survivors aboard the stricken vessel continues, as divers continue to search 50m below the water's surface.

Italian rescuers brought ashore the body of the final missing person who was on a superyacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily.

The woman’s body was detected on Friday, the Coast Guard said. She has not been officially identified, but Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of British tech magnate Mike Lynch , is reportedly unaccounted for. The Lynch family was aboard The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, when went down in a storm early Monday.

Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Mike Lynch’s body was recovered Thursday. He had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States.

His wife Angela Bacares was among the 15 survivors.

Divers struggled to find the six bodies trapped in the yacht’s hull 50 meters 164 feet underwater.

The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called it unsinkable.

The bodies of Lynch and four others were recovered by rescue crews. One woman remains missing.

The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about half a mile offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her.

Lynch had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.

Grounding of bulk carrier Indian Partnership

Location: off the coast of Misool Island, Indonesian archipelago.

Completed preliminary assessment (PA) summary 4/24: Indian Partnership

At 0409 on 23 April 2023, the UK registered bulk carrier Indian Partnership ran aground off the coast of Misool Island while transiting the Indonesian archipelago. The grounding caused significant breaches to the hull, leading to water ingress into the duct keel and five ballast water tanks (Figure 1).

Figure 1

Indian Partnership had set sail from Skardon River, Australia on 19 April 2023, bound for Qingdao, China (Figure 2) with a cargo of bauxite and a maximum draught of 18.2m. Four days into the voyage, the vessel was nearing the east coast of Misool Island. At 0405, the vessel approached a 3-mile gap between two charted shoal areas and a few minutes later the vessel vibrated and dropped in speed. At this time the charted soundings indicated about 60m depth and the vessel’s echo sounder recorded an under keel clearance of just over 30m.

Figure 2

At 0411, bilge alarms activated and the vessel started to list to starboard (Figure 1). The master initiated a damage assessment and with water ingress confirmed the vessel was anchored in a sheltered offshore location. Following temporary repairs, Indian Partnership proceeded to a shipyard where the relevant repairs were made to the ballast tanks and duct keel.

The MAIB’s preliminary assessment identified that:

The vessel ran aground because it almost certainly struck an uncharted shoal.

The Electronic Chart Display and Information System ( ECDIS ) route for the previous voyage from China to Australia was developed offboard by a voyage optimisation and weather-routeing company. The southbound voyage had been completed without incident, in a ballast condition, with a maximum draught of about 8.9m.

• The northbound voyage plan created on board Indian Partnership was a reversal of the southbound track. Not all the relevant information available on the Electronic Navigational Chart ( ENC ) and associated ADMIRALTY [footnote 1] publications had been reviewed during the appraisal and planning stages for either voyage, resulting in a voyage plan with higher navigational risk and a route that passed close between two charted shoals.

The vessel did not follow the Indonesian Archipelagic Sea Lanes ( ASL ) (Figure 2), which were not mandatory but were International Maritime Organization ( IMO ) adopted transit corridors through the archipelago [footnote 2] .

The ENC covering the area of the grounding was marked with a Category Zone of Confidence ( CATZOC ) of C, indicating that depth anomalies might be expected.

Indian Partnership’s safety management system documentation advised that mariners should exercise caution in CATZOC C areas.

The focus on minor waypoint adjustments using larger scale ENCs omitted the appraisal of smaller scale ENCs and reduced the possibility of identifying potentially more viable navigable routes. Such alternative routeing options could be missed on an ECDIS if the operator overscaled the ENC during planning. Additionally, zooming in beyond the original compilation scale during voyage monitoring could give the impression of greater accuracy than the source data provided and magnify positional errors.

Actions taken

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office has issued a Notice to Mariners to insert a reported depth of 18.3m in the position of the grounding and forwarded the information to Pushidrosal, the Indonesian charting authority, to ensure the relevant charts are updated.

Zodiac Maritime Limited has:

  • Completed an internal investigation into the grounding.
  • Conducted an incident briefing with the vessel’s master.
  • Distributed a briefing note to its staff about the voyage plan review process.
  • Written to its fleet highlighting the lessons learned from the accident.
