A small start-up is disrupting the marine manufacturing industry with MAMBO.

The sleek and seductive motor trimaran looks like an azure wave gliding across the water. Finished in high gloss aquamarine, 6.5 meters in length, with sharp twin bows and ultra-fluid lines, it turned many heads at the 2020 Genoa Boat Show. But could anyone tell, on first look, that this was MAMBO, the world’s first fully functional and navigable 3D-printed fiberglass boat?

A glimpse into the future of boat building

For decades, fiberglass boat hulls have been molded using a costly custom-made mold that may only be used once. The superstructure is then laid up manually with fiberglass and resin. Moi Composites, a spin-out from the Politecnico di Milano, has developed a process to  3D print  a boat, eliminating the mold and leaving the printed sections to be joined with a final lay-up process.

Fiberglass boat builders face an age-old problem. Many specialist boats and yachts are one-offs or made in short production runs. This means that the mold created to make the hull is an expensive, one-off capital cost. Two engineering researchers at the Politecnico di Milano, Michele Tonizzo and Gabriele Natale, were already thinking outside the box, making new things using additive manufacturing; "what if we could print a boat?" they asked. 

Cruise forward: “MAMBO”, a radical change in boat design and, possibly, a glimpse into the future of boat building.

This is a 3D model of a Trimaran. This has a big rudder so that when 3d printed it will sail straight as an arrow. Since this is a trimaran when 3d printed it will stay upright and stable in the water. This is a great project for those learning to 3d print. Description

This is a sailboat design that is good for all purposes. Hydrodynamic in shape, it is perfect as a display piece and as a toy. If printed with 10% infill, it floats, but it sits low in the water. It is made of multiple parts but no glue is required to fit them together. 

There are also a couple different rudder and daggerboard designs so mix and match as desired! It also borrows a mast and sail off of one of my other sailboat designs but it works fine for this model. 

Print the daggerboard and rudder with 100% infill, mast and hull print with 10% infill for best buoyancy. Would also recommend printing with 0.2mm layer height but other resolutions are fine. Support is needed for the hull, mast and the revised daggerboard.

3d model description.

Our new creation is a Trimaran Sailboat Model with double rigid sail, an original creation inspired by the autonomous "Saildrone" sailboats. The model is propelled by rigid sails made up of an internal 4 mm MDF skeleton made in laser cutting and covered with fiberglass or vinyl. It has double rudders that provide very good maneuverability. The aerodynamic hull, the 2 stabilizers and the keel give the boat great stability. Mechanical transmissions for sails and rudders are made up of 3D printed gears and prepared servomotors. Other mechanical components such as bearings, tubes and rods that are listed are also used.

To maintain waterproofing at the keel and rudder joints it is necessary to use cuts of a nitrile sheet or keep the rubber in these areas under pressure.

The model can be printed in PLA, PETG or ABS. For more demanding routes and longer duration in environments, PETG is recommended due to its mechanical resistance and durability.
