While purchasing a yacht is an emotional decision, you want to be sure to get a yacht that makes sense financially. This well priced Sunreef 70 power is not only economical to operate and maintain but she also has an excellent charter potential.

Interestingly, after extensive research, and comparing her to similar yachts and to other similar size yachts, we can confidently say that this in-demand and popular model would fetch ~$40,000 per week for such charter — making her a fantastic charter asset when you are not using her yourself.

As some owners like to recoup the cost of ownership or even profit from their charter operation, this Sunreef 70 Powercat, with a proven track record is something to consider.

This Sunreef 70 Powercat (formerly Damrak II) was awarded “Best Asia-Based Charter Yacht of the Year” by Asia Pacific Boating Magazine in 2014.

A Dream Cockpit to Escape, Explore, Entertain & Enjoy:

As you step into the cockpit — which seems like a small word for what seems more like a sprawling terrace offering plenty of space. And that could not be further from the truth, as this impressive vessel measures 70 feet in length and a whopping 30 feet wide.

Beneath the expansive flybridge overhang — which completely shades the cockpit — there is a large teak dining table for up to 10 guests. There are virtually no limits up to the number of guests you could invite onboard this Sunreef ( A party of 40 to 50 could even fit confortably considering the space!).

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale cockpit 2

There’s a spacious counter / sink under the stairs to the port size and a lounge pad to starboard, which seems like a great place to relax with a book in hand while underway. And because of how vast her cockpit is, she has an incredible amount of storage for your cleaning material supplies / safety equipment / and water toys.

During our sea trial, we were carrying a collection of surfboards, paddleboards, and two kayaks. These toys were stored on the side passageways, which are beyond generous in size. With so much storage area, you could easily take any sort of water sports equipment, (scuba gear, diving gear, seabob, wind surfing, fishing, etc). And of course, there is room for a 4.5 meter tender with it’s great and convenient hydraulic launching system. It’s also important to note that you could bring a jet-ski with you as there is an Opacmare crane on the flydeck to hoist it.

Inside awaits a spectacular surprise.

Its As If Someone Built A Luxury Loft Atop An Expedition Yacht:

Walking in here felt as if I just stepped into a two-floor, open concept penthouse.

One of the things you are going to love is the large open space, boasting unusually high vaulted ceilings (note: not often do you find vaulted ceilings in a saloon of a 70 footer!!), and it was without any internal walls (except for the bar which separated the galley).

But what you might love even more is the raised lounge which overlooks the saloon.

Another great thing, huge windows let in an inordinate amount of natural light, freshening and brightening the entire space easily. Whether you are standing or sitting in the main living areas of this Sunreef 70, you’ll always feel connected to the water.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale dining 210

Set within this bright and airy loft is a dining room area which seats 8-10 people easily and is conveniently located across from the widescreen LCD TV 40”.

Overall, the high-ceilings, raised lounge overlooking the saloon, make the saloon — like the cockpit — seem exceedingly spacious.

As for the design of the interior itself, it has a modern yet neutral look — thereby providing you with a wonderful “blank canvas” for you to decorate and design to your taste.

Finished in a combination of genuine Canaletto walnut wood and cream Alcantara.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale main deck 200

Now, if you are going to spend weeks, perhaps months, at sea, then you will appreciate the amount of additional storage found throughout the saloon.

We discovered that much of the furniture doubles up as storage.

And what’s more, there  are several vast hidden storage compartments in the saloon floor for carrying additional supplies — whether it be more tools, safety gear,  food, equipment, and “treasures” you might need while at sea.

And if you are wondering about the galley: it’s a fully equipped kitchen with a very large fridge that will keep you well stocked up on food for your journey.

Here’s a quick run-down of all the kitchen equipment: a four-zone induction cooker, microwave oven, two electric ovens, large refrigerator and freezer, dishwasher, wine chiller, ice dispenser, a bar-top, and of course, more storage. Everything you need to entertain family and friends. And everything you could need or want for spending weeks at sea.

Overall, the galley seems much like the perfect compromise between enclose and open layout:   with it’s one one side partially open to the living and dining spaces. Allowing you to be able to entertain and interact with your guests while you cook and prepare food and drinks.

And one of the key features that makes this boat feel so special (and spacial), is the raised pilothouse which opens to the saloon.

8.2745° N, 98.5012° E:

Typically, there are two types of people. Those who dream of exploring, and the people who do. And with this Sunreef 70 you can get ready to go anywhere.

From the saloon, you’ll easily  make your way up to the raised pilot-house (located mid-ship). While the visibility is not the absolute best compared to the flybridge it is good enough to take a shift at the helm underway.

Set behind a sweeping windshield and to port, you find the internal navigation station — neatly organized with access to your electronic equipment. You’ll appreciate the large touch screens and multiple redundancies.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale pilothouse 230

Located directly behind the helm station, and easily accessible, are steps (which can be closed off by a glass hatch) leading to the favorite spot from which to helm the boat — the flybridge helm station (more on that later).

Now, there are two main reasons why I liked this unique, open-concept, raised-pilothouse setup.

First, to starboard, is a welcoming and cozy pilothouse  lounge area — surrounded by bookshelves — which overlooks the saloon dining area and galley. In my opinion, this is a standout feature.

To my surprise, as I made myself comfortable in this lounge area, I caught myself enjoying the seascape that was pouring in from the aft section of the boat.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale pilot lounge 220

You see, because of the open-concept loft-layout of the saloon and pilothouse, I was able to enjoy the views of the water through the large saloon windows — all the way from the raised pilothouse lounge. Truly spectacular how Sunreef has managed to accomplish this.

Again, if you love open-concept designs, then this raised-pilothouse situated within the open saloon would be a hit with you.

Secondly, because this pilothouse is raised, it frees up the forward main-deck. Which makes for a much larger master cabin. Speaking of which, let’s head down towards it.

A Super Yacht-Master Stateroom:

From the raised-pilothouse, you take a few steps down toward the fore, past the 32-bottle wine chiller, through the private forward passageway, and you will find the unusually large owner’s cabin.

How large exactly? Well, according to Power & Motoryacht magazine the “master stateroom that feels unmistakably like it should be on a mega-yacht.” And I tend to agree.

Because this super-yacht-like master cabin takes nearly full advantage of her 30 foot beam. What’s more, the master is surrounded by a wonderful panoramic sea view  (thanks to stunning 180 degree large panoramic windows which surround most of the stateroom).

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale master cabin 240

And, to be exact, she offers 13m2 of room which is tastefully furnished with a king-size bed, desk, sofa, night stands, a 30’ LCD TV, and a tremendous amount of storage provided by two closets and numerous cabinets.

It’s probably fair to say that you could bring everything with you. As would be the case on a mega-yacht.

Having said that, and in my opinion, the wow-factor in this mega-yacht sized master suite comes in it’s multi-level layout.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale master cabin 245

To port, you will find a set of back-lit stairs leading into the port-side hull where you will find your private ensuite  — which looks and feels very much like a chic spa on the water.

Equipped with a his and hers washbasin, enclosed head, walk-in shower, and again… ample amounts of storage in the way cabinets, shelves, and counter space.

This multi-level setup — with your master on the main deck, and ensuite below deck — definitely adds to and enhances that super-yacht sensation.

Now, as for the accommodations for your friends and family….

A Home Isn’t Always 4 Walls, It Can Be 2 Hulls & 5 Spacious Cabins:

Inside the two hulls, this Sunreef 70 yacht you will find 4 spacious and well thought guest cabins which comfortably accommodated up to 10 guests overnight. Forward are two VIP cabins with the regular guest cabins to the aft. Each cabin has its very own ensuite, 26′ LCD TV, and ample storage.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale vip cabin 250

The two forward VIP cabins to port and starboard are massive and always have that master cabin feel. Each cabin contains a raised king bed, desk with vanity, tons of storage, and the Sunreef signature windows (which are aligned in such a way that you can view out of them while in bed). As for their differences, the starboard VIP cabin has a head that’s similar to size and feel of the master head. While the forward port cabin has a head similar in size to the aft guest cabins.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale guest cabin 270

As for the aft guest cabins, each contains a queen bed and pullman. Thereby, allowing for 3 people to sleep in these aft cabins.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale guest cabin 280

Now, because of the multi-hull arrangement, there are some unique advantages you get over a monohull.

First, there’s improved redundancy due to the twin engines (one in each hull). As well, because of the spacing between the two-hulls, this eliminates the need for a keel and thereby leaving her with minimal draft… perfect for shallow cruising grounds and reducing significantly the fuel consumption.

Moreover, depending on how large your family is, each hull could be dedicated to one family. Parents in the forward guest cabin, and children in the aft cabins.

As well, another unseen advantage of the multi-hull for long distance cruising is that you are far less likely to “step over” anyone. Why? Because unlike a monohull with one central passageway, two hulls cut foot traffic in half.  This may seem like a moot point, but, if you are at sea for an extended period of time, you will appreciate this additional comfort and freedom of movement.

Now, what really makes this Sunreef 70 stand-out is her flybridge.

In The End, You won’t Remember The Time You Spent Working. Get The Boat Of Your Dreams & Explore:

Perched above the main deck is something not typically found on a yacht of 70 feet.

Accessible directly from the cockpit via the sweeping steps or from the internal navigation station, is Sunreef’s trademark: the 37m2 flybridge which like the master stateroom feels as if it belongs on a much bigger yacht. The reason for this is because of the 30 foot beam of the Sunreef 70.

sunreef 70 power yacht for sale flybridge 110

On the flydeck you’ll find the second helm station, a cocktail bar with two bar chairs, wet bar, stainless steel electric BBQ, a dining table with sofa and armchairs, sunbathing mattresses and the Opacmarine crane — capable of lifting a jet-ski or water-scooter.

Best of all, there is the perfect place for you and your guests to enjoy your favorite drinks and watch the sun go down from the aft deck jacuzzi (an addon 50k feature on this boat) — which is partially surrounded by a generous spread of sunpads — or relax under the very convenient retractable bimini roof. As would be the case on a much larger super-yacht flybridge.

What lies beneath: the ship that could revolutionise seaweed cultivation

Researchers and industry in Norway are designing the world’s largest seaweed cultivation vessel to meet growing demand for the multi-functional algae.

Most commonly associated in the West with seaside holidays and Chinese restaurants, seaweed is in fact present in everything from food to medicines, bioplastics, animal feed, fertilisers and biofuels.

Cultivating this humble algae on an industrial scale is now big business. Global seaweed production more than doubled between 2000 and 2014 to around 28 million tons annually, worth an estimated $6bn.

In Norway, which is home to 400 species, demand has begun to outstrip capacity, where much of the sowing and harvesting from cultivation farms is still carried out manually. This is unsustainable; commercial production turnover is already $140m − and is predicted to increase to $4.8bn by 2050.

Charged with finding a solution is a multidisciplinary research team headed by SINTEF Ocean and Møre Maritime AS, a Norwegian ship design company specialising in aquaculture vessels.

Funded to the tune of $2m by industry and the Research Council of Norway, the consortium is designing a new vessel specifically equipped for commercial seaweed cultivation and production.

“Most seaweed handling is done manually and/or with help from equipment from other applications that is not adapted to the purpose, resulting in time-consuming operations,” says Andreas Myskja Lien, a research scientist at SINTEF, the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia. “This is a challenge cultivators are facing, considering ambitions for expansion and industrialisation.

“The project will develop a future-oriented vessel concept with associated handling systems, deck equipment, and solutions for seaweed quality preservation. The focus is on effective operations, high product quality and good HSE. This means integrating a high degree of handling and processing mechanisation and automation to deliver predictable and profitable end products to the market.”

Manual shift: automation key to production upscaling

Sea -based seaweed cultivation currently involves producing seedlings in labs before transferring them to farms – networks of connected ropes, nets or tarpaulins moored to the seabed – to grow.

The seaweed is harvested manually from small boats. The new vessel concept will make the process less labour-intensive and more efficient, enabling it to be scaled up to facilitate mass production.

“The strategy in Norway is producing high-quality biomass for high value products in pharmaceutical applications, health foods, bioactive chemicals, food article ingredients, and human food,” explains Myskja Lien. “Various by-products can be used for making fertilisers, bioplastics, and bio-energy.

“A specialised seaweed cultivation vessel will have great impact on international high-cost countries with high salaries, and will be essential in making seaweed cultivation profitable by handling large volumes of biomass at low operating costs.”

Better by design: new vessel equipped for seaweed lifecycle

The vessel is still in the design stage, but a key requirement is that it be equipped for the gamut of operations, from the installation of seaweed cultivation facilities, to the transport and sowing of seaweed seedlings and the preservation of the fully-grown plants during harvesting and transport.

“Using the seaweed for food requires careful handling and preservation of not only the nutrient compounds, but also the aesthetics of the plants, transporting in a controlled environment,” explains Myskja Lien. “The on-board systems of the vessel are dependent on the end product. For example, using it for alginate extraction it might be shredded and silaged straight away. Several solutions will be investigated, and the project might result in several specialised concepts.”

So, what are the main design and technical challenges of the project and how are they being overcome?

“The main challenges include developing solutions that ensure effective handling and transport of the seaweed while ensuring quality preservation and good HSE,” says Myskja Lien. “The combined expertise and experience of the project consortium is key. In addition, the project will collaborate closely with Norwegian seaweed cultivators and relevant ongoing research projects, such as Macrosea and Promac (both the Research Council of Norway) and Genialg (EU Horizon 2020).”

The Norwegian team are not alone in exploring new cultivation techniques. An EU-funded project in 2014, AT~SEA, developed innovative textiles designed to cultivate macroalgae off Europe’s coasts.

Like the new vessel design project, the driving force behind AT~SEA was to explore the potential of seaweed to meet the food and renewable energy demands of an ever-growing global population.

Deep impact: seaweed farming and the environment

SINTEF also points to potential environmental benefits. Perceived as one of the most benign types of aquaculture, seaweed farming does not require additional feed or fertilisers and may have indirectly reduced over-fishing by providing coastal communities, many in Asia, with an alternative livelihood.

Increasingly, cultivation is being integrated with intensive fish farming to provide nursery grounds for juvenile commercial fish and crustaceans. Other potential positives include biomass to replace products made from fossil feed-stocks. However, Myskja Lien takes a more cautionary approach.

“We do not yet know the extent of consequences of commercial cultivation, which has been more or less on an experimental scale in Norway, using local plants to reduce genetic impact,” he states.

“Now that seaweed cultivation is moving towards industrialisation, the environmental impact of large scale production is important to investigate. SINTEF is partner in the ongoing project KELPPRO to assess the positive and negative impacts of kelp farming on coastal environments.”

A report by the United Nations University warned that the rapid growth of the commercial seaweed industry means the industry must be on guard against potential pitfalls, such as non-indigenous pests and pathogens, and promote genetic diversity of seaweed stocks and awareness of good farm management practices.

Commercial seaweed cultivation is a relatively nascent industry in Norway. The three-year SINTEF Ocean/Møre Maritime AS project aims to take the industry to the next level by creating a ship that can cultivate and harvest seaweed safely and efficiently to satisfy escalating domestic and global demand.

“SINTEF has been working with seaweed cultivation for many years and is home to the Norwegian Seaweed Technology Centre, a knowledge platform for technology development within industrial cultivation, harvesting, processing and application of seaweed in Norway,” says Myskja Lien.

“The industry partners on the project range from suppliers of on-board equipment to end users of the vessel. The major potential for added value from the research will contribute to the foundation of an industrialised seaweed cultivation business in Norway by 2020.”

Why sargassum weed is posing increasing problems for Transatlantic sailors

Yachting World

  • April 30, 2020

To the usual list of concerns facing transatlantic sailors – too much wind, too little wind, gear failure – a new one must be added: seaweed. Specifically, sargassum. Sam Fortescue reports

Sargassum’s yellowish-brown straggles in the water have traditionally been considered a sign that boats are nearing the tropics, but record blooms of the weed in recent years have created a vast raft straddling the Atlantic, dubbed the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt.

The first mass bloom was seen in 2011, while the record bloom recorded in 2018 was ten times bigger – sargassum is an increasing problem. Reports by participants of the ARC transatlantic rally suggest that the weed can be a real nuisance on the crossing.

Camilla Ljungberg describes seeing “big orange carpets” several kilometres wide during her Atlantic crossing in 2015. “It’s very strange stuff; had the texture of shredded cabbage,” adds Grant Jamieson-Hesk, who crossed in 2017.

“The thicker clumps slowed down the sailing boat significantly,” explains Marc Locher, who sailed the ARC in a Hanse 505 in 2017. “I was scared that we would be stopped and unable to move on, presuming that the weed would be also under the hull and around the propeller. I had heard that huge carpets of weed could be compressed to a depth of 2-3m.”

Dave Moring ran into sargassum weed problems in the second half of his 2018 ARC+ , which sails to St Lucia via the Cape Verde islands. “You can avoid it during the day by slaloming between the fields,” he says. “However, we sailed through one field of sargassum weed on purpose, and that was not one of my best ideas. The speed went down from 6 knots to just 1.5 knots at the end of the field. We could not steer or turn on the engine, we almost got stuck.”

A real drag

The biggest problem is caused by weed snagging on spade rudders and bulb keels and creating drag. “We had to clean our rudder every two or three hours because the boat would lose speed and steering was impossible because of the vibration,” says Miguel Netto d’Almeida, who crossed in 2018 on a Pogo 12.50.

Underwater snags: How to escape when your yacht is caught in debris

Whether it’s a fishing pot, long tendrils of Sargasso weed or your own spinnaker sheets, getting stuff wrapped around keels,…

5 tips: how to deal with snagging weed and hooking pots on an offshore race

The sails look great and you’ve just spent money on having the keel faired and the bottom sprayed, but today…

Frequent ARC participant Ross Applebey has added weed prevention to his Oyster 48 Scarlet Oyster . “We have fitted a little blade that sits almost touching the rudder’s leading edge that blocks the gap between hull and rudder. This seems to help a lot.”

For many skippers the first sign of weed was a drop in boat speed. While it could usually be shaken off with a few quick turns of the wheel, others had to dive to clear the propeller, or reverse their yacht to dislodge it.

Jörgen Wennberg was alerted to the problem by an alarming vibration as they sailed downwind on an Elan 410 during the 2014 ARC. “[Our] first check was the keel fitting on the inside. That looked solid, fixed to the hull. Next we looked at the rudder fitting to see if the vibrations came from the rudder stock – it looked OK. The next inspection was with a GoPro camera fitted on a long shaft. It was seaweed around the keel, propeller and rudder.

The Mexican Navy has built four specialist boats to collect and extract the weed, capable of removing 320 tonnes a day. Photo: Peter Karlocai / WCC

“We took the spinnaker down, turned upwind and let the boat drift backwards to release the seaweed from the boat. We did that seven times during our crossing.”

Others, like Stefan Morjak, turned to the engine to motor astern. “Our manoeuvre was full backward and forward in short intervals and the rudder fast changing from hard port to hard starboard. It’s a torture for engine and rudder but helpful.”

But if you do try to use the engine when it’s tangled with weed, you might make matters worse. “Each time we turned on the engine it made an awful noise. It sounded like the prop was about to fall off,” says Roz Smith, who has just completed a circumnavigation in a refitted Oyster 56. “So bad in fact, that [husband] Rick actually went in to check it was just weed – the only time on the whole trip he had gone into the water while we were at sea.”

Sargassum-weed-hydrogenerator-credit-Christian-Bøcker-WCC

Others warned that the weed clogged the through-hull intakes for engines, generators and even watermakers. “There is a lot [of sargassum] washed up here in the Grenadines,” reports Russ Whitehouse after sailing the ARC+ on his Allures 45. “Enough that it blocked our cooling water intake to the generator completely, causing it to shut itself down, thankfully before any damage was caused.”

And weed is equally effective at clogging self-steering gear and the smaller impellers that turn hydrogenerators. Nick Fabbri on his Southerly 38 Ruby Rose says: “We always knew we were in weed because the hydrovane would stop working.”

There have been many reports of Watt & Sea or Duogen units being rendered unusable by the weed. ARC participant Dave Moring reflects: “Charging the batteries with the hydrogenerator [was] not possible. Eventually we had to switch off the fridge and use the windpilot instead of the electric autopilot to reduce energy consumption.” Others reported that resistance from the weed pulled the propeller on their hydrogenerators off.

Sargassum also makes fishing impossible. Although sargassum provides a rich and important habitat for small fish, crabs and other marine life, which in turn attracts larger predator species, the oversized mats of weed can also have a detrimental effect, trapping marine creatures like turtles and suffocating coral.

Sargassum has an even more disruptive effect when it makes landfall, clogging beaches, polluting reefs and shutting down tourist infrastructure as it creates an unpleasant eggy smell as it decays. The Caribbean was particularly hard hit in 2018, with top resorts such as the St James’s Club on Antigua closing for three months in the summer. This season, Mexico’s Caribbean coast has suffered badly.

Nutrient imbalance

With the economic impact of weed mounting, scientific research has been focussed on providing an explanation for the plague-like proportions of sargassum blooms seen since 2011. A study from the University of South Florida (USF) tracked the growth using NASA satellites. Contrary to that old sailor’s tale about seaweed coming from the Sargasso Sea, they found that the blooms were originating much further south, along the equator.

Sargassum-weed-bloom-2011

Areas affected by the sargassum bloom in 2011

The USF team believe that new patterns of nutrient enrichment may be the root cause. Some have blamed deforestation in the Amazon and growing use of synthetic fertiliser on either side of the Atlantic for the nutrient spike, but no study has yet confirmed this.

“The ocean’s chemistry must have changed in order for the blooms to get so out of hand,” said Dr Chuanmin Hu of the USF College of Marine Science who led the study.

The peak bloom is normally found in July. Generally, the mats begin to dissipate by the time the trade wind crossing season opens in November, which explains why some sailors encounter no more than the long, straggling streaks of weed that have accompanied mariners for centuries.

Sargassum-weed-bloom-2018

The bloom of 2018 was ten times larger than that of 2011

Nonetheless, there is little doubt that sargassum is likely to remain an increasing challenge for sailors. Records suggest that bloom sizes run in two or three year growth cycles, before a poor year for the seed population reduces the weed again. They also show a steady increase in bloom sizes.

The last peak was in July 2018, when satellite data showed an unbroken belt of sargassum stretching from Brazil to Africa and back to the Gulf of Mexico. Estimates put the total weight of biomass at 20m tonnes. And as Dr Hu warns: “Based on the last 20 years of data, I can say that the belt is very likely to be a new normal.”

We are hoping that the administration can rectify this issue soon, but unfortunately at this time we can make no promises as to when... we have been working on letting the higher powers that be 'know of the situation... hang in there iboaters, we've been through a lot over the years and this is just another rough weather system rolling through to endure is all. Seaweed getting caught in prop

I've had this 9.9 hp tohatsu for awhile now, and seaweed keeps getting caught in the prop. Also, just a few strands of it can slow my engine down and make it sound like it's cavitating. I know that it isn't a huge deal, and that I can reverse the hell out of the weeds, but it freaks my girlfriend out when it starts making that cavitating noise. Is there any trick or piece of equipment that I can use to prevent seaweed from getting caught? -thanks, Chris btw, I live in Maine and it's the long thin seaweed that pisses me off

Re: Seaweed getting caught in prop Yea I hate that stuff, on my 70hp it won't get cought in the prop, but it does sometimes block my water intake for a few seconds before I stop. If I go through a patch I'll always look back to make sure it's still "pissing". But as stated above, a quick shot of reverse ends all the trouble. Austin

Re: Seaweed getting caught in prop There are props that are considered semi weedless. A ss prop might cut some weeds. You need to try to remember where the weeds are . also if you must pass through the weeds try going the same path you may eventually eliminate enough to get through more easily.

The Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region (Yugra) is located in the centre of the West Siberian Plain. It borders on the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region in the north, the Komi Republic in the northeast, Sverdlov Region in the southwest, Tobolsky Region in the south, and Tomsk Region and Krasnoyarsk Territory in the southeast and east. The region spans 1,400 km east to west from the eastern slopes of Northern Ural almost to the banks of the Yenisey; and north to south - 900 km from the Sibirskiye Uvaly to the Konda taiga. The length of the borders is 4733 km.

The relief is a combination of plains, foothills, and mountains. The highest elevations are Narodnaya Mountain in the Pre-Polar Urals (1894 m) and Pedy Mountain in the Northern Urals (1010 m). The Ob, with a length of 3,650 kilometers and Irtysh, whose length is 3,580 kilometers, their tributaries, and many smaller rivers form the area`s river system. Altogether, there are nearly 30 000 rivers in the area. There are nearly 290 000 lakes with an area of more than 1 hectare. Larger lakes (area greater than 100 km ) include Kondinsky Sor, Leushinsky Tyman, Vandemtor, and Tromemtor.

The distance from Moscow is 2,500 km, from Irkutsk is 3,500 km. and from the largest city in the district - Surgut is 300 km.

  Khanty-Mansiysk (founded in 1582, population 101,000 as of 2019)

535,000 km , rank 9 in the country.

1,700,000 as of 2019, national composition: Russian 68%, Tatar 7,6%, Ukrainian 6%, Bashkir 2,5% the indigenous population (Khanty, Mansi, and Nenets) is 2,2%.

The climate is temperate continental, characterized by a rapid change in weather conditions especially in transitional periods - from autumn to winter and from spring to summer. Winters are long, snowy and cold. The average January temperature in the district ranges from -18 to -24C. Extreme cold conditions may last for several weeks with the average air temperature below minus 30C. Summer is short and warm. The warmest month of July is characterized by average temperatures from + 15C (in the northwest) to + 18.4C (in the southeast). The absolute maximum reaches 36C.

Climate formation is significantly influenced by the protection of the territory from the west by the Ural Range and the openness of the territory from the north, which facilitates the penetration of cold Arctic masses, as well as the flat character of the area with a large number of rivers, lakes and swamps.

Ugra is the historical homeland of the Ob-Ugric peoples first of all: Khanty, Mansi, Nenets and Selkups. They were engaged in hunting, fishing, and cattle breeding. After the Turkic peoples pressed them from south to north, these peoples transferred their skills to more severe conditions. It was in a new place that the Ugrians began to domesticate the deer.

In the XII-XIII centuries. in the Irtysh and Priobye formed territorial clan associations of the Khanty and Mansi, called the principalities. From the second half of the XIII century a new factor in the development of the territory was its entry into the Golden Horde. At the end of the XIV century the collapse of the Golden Horde led to the separation of the Tyumen Khanate. In 1495, the Siberian Khanate was formed, the capital of which was the city of Kashlyk. It was then that the basic principles of the political-administrative and socio-economic organization of the territory developed. At this time, it was called Ugra.

Khanty-Mansiysk: Why you simply must visit this northern land of mammoths

sea weed yacht

“I have been to Yugra many times. I was sworn in as a Siberian in a cedar forest,” producer Andrey Suleikov writes in the preface to a collection of legends called Yugra. It’s My Land . “I tasted lingonberries in the cold and could not tell whether the berries were coated in sugar or ice. I also enjoyed outdoor hot springs while taking a traditional Siberian bath."

Fuel pumping stations

Fuel pumping stations

Sounds more like time travel than a present-day tourist trip, doesn’t it? But that is what Yugra is like: a fusion between prehistoric things like mammoths and modernity, which has brought oil, gas and new buildings. Even the region’s official name (which is quite long: the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area – Yugra) combines the present with the past.

Tying a ribbon is a national tradition

Tying a ribbon is a national tradition

There is a beautiful legend about Yugra’s origins. In one very bright, warm and sunny city, twins of unprecedented beauty were born: a brother named Yug and a sister named Ra. At first, they grew up like ordinary small children, but with age they began to argue and fight, so much so that when they did flames flared up around them. The townspeople were afraid that they would burn everything down, so they exiled Yug and Ra to a remote northern land covered with ice and snow. The brother and sister illuminated this land with their light and made it warm so that people could come here to live. Yug and Ra stopped fighting and began living together in harmony. Since then, this northern land has been called Yugra.

When you look at the map, it may seem that Khanty-Mansiysk is located almost in the middle of Russia. However, the climate here is similar to regions of the Far North. In winter, the temperature here drops to below -40 degrees Celsius.

We asked local residents and people who know this region well to tell us more about it and to share some tips for tourists who come to visit.

Why should a foreigner visit Khanty-Mansiysk?

“If you want to feel the coldness and colors of Russian winter, then you should definitely stop by in our small cozy town,” says a local tattoo artist, Semyon Chepurnoy.

A Khanty man in a traditional dress

Yevgeny Zinovyev, a journalist and the former editor-in-chief of a local media outlet, says that Khanty-Mansiysk provides the opportunity to experience a real and not touristy part of Russia. “In winter, there are frosts, snowdrifts and wind. In summer, heat, midges and bears. At any time of the year, you can experience the everyday life and customs of the indigenous peoples: the Khanty and Mansi. And of course, in Khanty-Mansiysk you can get to know the backbone of modern Russia – its oil and gas sector."

“We have unique scenery here. Khanty-Mansiysk is located on seven hills and is surrounded by the taiga. There are a lot of fish in the rivers, and a lot of mushrooms, berries and pine nuts in the forests surrounding the city,” says local insurance company employee Sergey Yankovich.

The harsh climate of the region influences how local residents relate to visitors. “Residents of the city are very good-natured and welcoming and are always ready to offer help in any situation, even to a stranger, because in the north, there is an unspoken rule: If you see that a person is in distress, be sure to help them, because tomorrow, it may be you in their place. The harsh climate and surrounding scenery leave no room for error, especially in winter,” Sergey says.

Things to see/do/taste in Khanty-Mansiysk

Mammoths at the Archeopark

Mammoths at the Archeopark

According to Irina Pudova, a local resident and the author of a collection of legends called Yugra: It’s My land , the first thing to do in Khanty-Mansiysk is to see the local mammoths. Seven life-size bronze prehistoric animals "roam" the area near Samarovsky Hill on the grounds of the Archeopark complex. Here you will also find a prehistoric bison, a pack of wolves, a cave bear, two woolly rhinos and prehistoric people themselves.

Sculptures of bisons at the Archeopark cultural and tourist complex

“Then you could get something to eat,” Irina advises. “The thing to do is to go to any local restaurant of Siberian cuisine and ask for muksun. It is a valuable freshwater fish of the salmon family, which is highly prized by locals and tourists alike.”

Khanty-Mansiysk is a relatively new city and only received this status in 1950. Soo oil was discovered in the region, prompting a dramatic push in its development. Prior to that, there were just Siberian settlements built by Russia in the late 16th century. Irina is impressed that a modern city was built in such harsh conditions.

The Church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin

“Cultural objects, squares, houses - all this is unique. And everything is new, there is nothing very ancient here. Except for mammoths!” she says.

In addition to the Archeopark mentioned above, Yevgeny Zinovyev’s list of favorite places in the city includes the Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas, along with the Museum of Nature and Man and the centuries-old cedars in the Samarovsky Chugas natural park. He recommends checking out the views from the observation deck near the Monument to the Explorers of the Yugra Land and paying a visit to a local bathhouse.

Yevgeny also provided us a checklist of culinary delights that anyone visiting Khanty-Mansiysk should be sure to try:

  • Muksun (in any form but best of all frozen and sliced as Stroganina).
  • Wild berries (cranberry, cowberry, cloudberry).
  • Venison (in any form but best of all stewed and sprinkled with frozen berries and pine nuts).

Sergey Yankovich recommends visiting the open-air ethnographic museum Torum Maa, which means "Sacred Land" in Mansi. “There you can get acquainted with the history of the city and the district, as well as with the life of the indigenous peoples of the Khanty and Mansi, who belong to the Finno-Ugric group,” Sergey says.

In addition, he advises anyone who comes to Khanty-Mansiysk to visit the spot where the Ob and Irtysh rivers meet, pay a visit to Misne Hotel’s restaurant and taste traditional dishes there, as well as dishes prepared by local fishermen and hunters while in the taiga.

According to Semyon Chepurnoy, the Valley of Streams natural park is another must for any visitor. It is one of local residents’ favorite recreation areas, where you can stroll along a dedicated footpath offering stunning views of the city. Semyon also advises trying pancakes at the GoodFood chain of cafes.

What are the best souvenirs?

“We all love something mystical and supernatural. There is a strong culture of shamanism here, so I think it’s cool to take with you some local amulets charged by a shaman—a bear claw or a pendant made of beads and deerskin,” says Irina Pudova.

Sergey Yankovich advises that authentic souvenirs can be found at the Crafts Center on Roznina Street. “There you can also see and even try on the national costumes of the Khanty and Mansi and try to solve traditional puzzles that representatives of the indigenous peoples made for their children.”

According to Yevgeny Zinovyev, the best souvenirs are Khanty and Mansi amulets, clothes, jewelry, as well as traditional local treats such as muksun, wild berries, pine nuts and venison.

For his part, Semyon Chepurnoy recommends bringing away memories and photographs as well as a little bit of Siberian Frost ❄.
