Raft-Up Party at Devil’s Cove (Lake Travis)

Devil’s Cove is one of the most infamous party coves in America, and for renters visiting the Austin area, it never disappoints. During weekends throughout the summer—and during busy holidays like spring break, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day—it's normal to expect 200 boats or more to raft-up in this location. Local police authorities actively patrol this area, so if you are boating without a professional captain onboard, be sure to boat responsibly and assign a designated sober skipper. Getting to Devil’s Cove : Devil’s Cove is located on the northshore of Lake Travis, just north of Northshore Marina at the Hollows and Vincent’s on the Lake.

Fishing and Cruising the Colorado River

The Colorado River is basically the interstate waterway of Austin, connecting Lake Travis in the north, to Lake Austin, and finally down to Lady Bird Lake and beyond. Anglers will find some of the best bass fishing in central Texas, as these waterways are known for hosting largemouth, guadalupe, and white bass. Other target species in this area include gar, freshwater drum, and carp. If it's your first time fishing near Austin, look to  book a fishing charter for a guided experience and learn from local captains.

Pro Tip : Just past the Mansfield Dam Park, you’ll find Tom Hughes park located along the northern part of the river near Lake Travis. This is one of the lake’s most popular areas to drop anchor to go swimming or watch the sunset.

Take in the Sights at Hippie Hollow (Lake Travis)

Warning—this experience is best suited for adults only! Call the babysitter and leave the kiddos at home for this boat outing. Why? Well, Hippie Hollow Park is the only clothing-optional public park in the state of Texas, and entry to the park is restricted to those 18 years of age or older. And yes, you will see plenty of nude sunbathers here enjoying the summer heat along the rock formations and swimming in the water. Entry to the park is free if arriving by boat. On land, day entry is $8 per person, with park hours open between 9am to 8pm every day, rain or shine.

Pro Tip : The shoreline along Hippie Hollow is known to be quite rocky, so if you’re arriving by boat you’ll want to anchor just off shore before swimming up to the rocks.

Getting to Hippie Hollow : The park is directly across from the Mansfield Dam Boat Ramp, as well as the Commanders Point Yacht Basin and nearby to Marshall Ford Marina near Tom Hughes Park.

Where to Go Boating in Austin

Lake Travis

Lake Travis , which is a 40-minutes drive north of downtown Austin, offers limitless entertainment and things to do for boaters and watersports enthusiasts. Aside from Devil's Cove and Hippie Hollow, places like Starnes Island and Mansfield Dam Park are other well known boating hop spots. Boaters can find Starnes Island in the Sandy Creek area of the lake, and may often hear it referenced by one of its many nicknames: ‘Monkey Island,’ ‘Rattlesnake Island,’ or ‘Snake Island.’ If you’re interested in checking out these iconic Lake Travis locations, we recommend booking a boat rental with a captain who can handle navigation, anchoring, and raft-ups.

Nearby Marinas : VIP Marina Lake Travis is just north of Starnes Island, while boaters will find Lake Travis Marina to the south and the Northshore Marina at the Hollows to the west. Marshall Ford Marina is close to Mansfield Dam Park

Wake zone : Yes - Devil’s Cove, Starnes Island and Mansfield Dam Park each have a lot of incoming and outgoing boat traffic, so be very conscious of your surroundings and keep an eye out for other boaters.

Pro Tips : If you’re visiting Lake Travis for the Fourth of July, Starnes Island is home to the famous fireworks display, put on by local dockside restaurant Beachside Billy’s.

Lake Austin

Lake Austin , just 11-miles north and a 20-minutes drive from downtown, is home to the famous Pennybacker Bridge (also known as the Austin 360 Bridge). If you’ve ever seen destination or travel highlights of Austin, you’ve likely seen this beloved landmark showcased. Be sure to grab a group photo of a bridge as the sun sets, and then take advantage of some of the best dock-and-dine locations on the lake—many of which are located along or near Austin Boulevard, including Hula Hut, Ski Shores Cafe, and Abel’s on the Lake, just to name a few.

Nearby Marinas & Launches : Located near central and southern Lake Austin, you’ll find Ski Shore Marine, West Lake Beach, Lake Austin Marina, and Oyster Landing Marina.

Wake zone : Yes in some areas, keep an eye out for signage - also be sure to stay 200 feet away from the shoreline, especially when you are wake surfing.

Pro Tips : Lake Austin is world-renowned as one of the top lakes in the U.S. for wakesurfing, thanks to its typically calm waters. This makes the location ideal for beginners who are just getting started.

Lady Bird Lake

Lake Bird Lake is located right near the heart of downtown Austin and is a go-to favorite for locals who want to go kayaking, hiking, biking and stand-up paddleboarding. Motorized vessels are not allowed in this lake; however, watercraft powered by electric motors under 5 horsepower are allowed to operate. While swimming is prohibited, anglers will be happy to hear that there is an impressive population of largemouth bass, as well as sunfish and large carp. Electric trolling motors that meet the horsepower requirements are ideal for fishing and navigating these waters. This location is also popular for night fishing.

Nearby Boat Ramps : Festival Beach Boat Ramp is the best location for launching small vessels. 

Wake zone : Yes - the entire lake is a no wake zone.

Pro Tips : Zebra mussels (an aquatic invasive species) have been found in Lady Bird Lake. Be sure to clean, drain, and dry your boat, trailer, livewells and bait buckets, and other gear before launching into another body of water.

Austin ISD, Disability Rights Texas settle lawsuit over special education services backlog

The Austin school district and Disability Rights Texas have reached a settlement agreement over a 2021 lawsuit in which the disabilities advocacy nonprofit accused the district of failing to provide timely special education services to five students.

The district’s school board voted Thursday to approve the settlement, but neither the district nor the nonprofit had released details about the settlement as of Friday.

The settlement announcement comes as the Austin district works to satisfy the requirements of a September 2023 order from Texas Education Agency over the district’s failure to evaluate students for special education services and provide other services.

The school district and Disability Rights “are pleased to reach this agreement and now await final approval from the court,” according to a joint statement from the two entities.

In the March 2021 lawsuit, filed on behalf of five students identified only by their initials, Disability Rights accused the district of failing to serve students with disabilities because of a yearslong backlog of evaluation requests from children seeking services.

Under federal law, once a parent requests their child to get evaluated for special education services, a school district must complete that analysis within a strictly prescribed timeline.

Austin for years had racked up hundreds of overdue evaluations, in part because of staffing churn and data collection issues, among other matters.

In September, the state education agency installed a monitor over the Austin district because of this backlog. A monitor is the least severe of state sanctions, allowing districts to maintain full autonomy as long as local officials and school boards meet the requirements of the order.

In Austin, the TEA order required aggressive timelines for clearing the backlog, updating district data systems, extensive staff training and providing additional services for students who filed grievances with the state, among other things.

Since then, the district has made progress toward completing parts of the state-mandated order such as reducing the backlog and closing corrective action plans for students who filed grievances with the state, according to the district.

During 2023, district staff members reduced overdue evaluations from 1,780 in January to 306 in December .

APD Detectives Identify a Suspect in Connection to a 1980 Homicide Cold Case

Case:   1980-920083668 Date:   January 9, 1980 Location:  2000 East 17th Street Victim (deceased):   Susan Leigh Wolfe, White female, 01/13/1954 Suspect:  Deck Brewer Jr., Black male, 78 years of age

On January 9, 1980, 25-year-old Susan Leigh Wolfe enrolled at the University of Texas Austin School of Nursing. On the same day, at about 10 p.m., she was kidnapped about one block from her home while walking to a friend’s house after having her house sprayed for bugs. A witness to the kidnapping watched as a car stopped and the driver exited grabbing Susan in a ''bear hug,'' placed a coat over her head, and forced her into the car. The witness also said that the passenger door opened, but he did not see what the passenger did during the abduction. Having worked in the automotive industry, this witness confidently described the car as a 1970 Dodge Polara.

Susan’s body was found early the next morning in an Austin alley at 2000 E. 17th Street. The pathologist found evidence of ligature strangulation, determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death as homicide. During the autopsy, the pathologist found evidence of sexual assault left by one of the suspects. That evidence has been retained by APD and The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Crime Laboratory throughout the duration of the investigation.   During the first year of the investigation, APD investigators tirelessly followed up on dozens of leads, investigated and tracked down numerous cars fitting the witness’s description, produced over 40 persons of interest, and interviewed at least six suspects, some as far away as New York state. On April 27, 2023, Detectives from the APD Cold Case Unit submitted evidence related to the sexual assault of Susan Wolfe to the Texas DPS Crime Laboratory. The Austin Forensic Science Department and DPS Crime Laboratory evaluated the evidence and concluded it was suitable for testing.   On February 12, 2024, APD received the test results which produced a male Short Tandem Repeat (STR profile, which eliminated the six known suspects as contributors to the evidence. TX DPS entered the STR profile into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). This computer software program operates local, state, and national databases of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons.   On March 11, 2024, APD received notification from TX DPS that a possible match in CODIS was located in Massachusetts. Detectives reviewed the Massachusetts State Police Forensic Services Division report dated March 7, 2024. This report identified 78-year-old Deck Brewer Jr. as the possible contributor to the STR profile developed by TX DPS. Current arrest records show Deck Brewer Jr. is currently incarcerated at the Massachusetts Department of Corrections on unrelated charges.   On June 10, 2024, the Travis County District Court found probable cause to issue a DNA search warrant to seize a DNA sample from Deck Brewer Jr. for direct comparison to the evidence found during Susan Wolfe’s autopsy.   On July 13, 2024, APD detectives executed the DNA search warrant in Massachusetts by obtaining the DNA sample from Deck Brewer Jr. and conducting a short interview with Brewer. During that conversation, Brewer said he had been in Austin and San Antonio, Texas, around the time of the murder. Brewer invoked his right to counsel after he was told his DNA was found at the scene of a homicide.   On July 23, 2024, APD received the results of the direct comparison of Brewer's DNA to the DNA found inside the victim during the autopsy. The following is an excerpt from the DPS report.   Deck Brewer Jr. cannot be excluded as the contributor of the partial major component in this DNA profile. The probability of selecting an unrelated person at random who could be the contributor of the partial major component in this DNA profile is approximately 1 in 550.5 quintillion. One quintillion is followed by 18 zeros.   On August 14, 2024, based on the totality of the investigation thus far, the Austin Municipal Court found probable cause to issue an arrest warrant charging Deck Brewer Jr. with the murder of Susan Leigh Wolfe.   This is still an ongoing investigation as APD is following leads in an effort to identify the passenger in the car when Susan Leigh Wolfe was abducted. The North Art Complex fire in Mason County is almost completely contained.

MASON COUNTY, Texas - Firefighters are battling well over a dozen wildfires across Texas , among the largest of those a blaze that continued to burn Saturday night in Mason County.

The North Art Complex fire is well on its way to being fully contained thanks to the hard work of fire crews and some help from Mother Nature. 

Local and state fire crews were able to make major progress after the fire was doused by significant rain that fell across the area Friday night. That boost allowed firefighters to move into mop-up mode on Saturday.

"We have the fire backed up to a couple of different roads, which is always a positive sign," Kayla Driver with the Texas A&M Forest Service said. "So just continuing to work and pushing forward to put out the fire."

Despite the progress, the fire has already scorched more than 4,300 acres, after several fires that sparked on Thursday night merged into one early Friday.

"The fire started due to lightning strikes. And it started as multiple fire and ignition points," said Driver. "And then those fires that were in this very small, kind of tight circle grew together to one area."

Crews have been making drop after drop on the fire using aircraft, as well as tightening up containment lines on the ground.

"And so we're tying in those dozer lines from those multiple ignition points, so that we can contain it all the way around," Driver said.

As of 8:26 p.m. August 24, the North Art Complex fire is 95% contained.

The blaze in Mason County is just one of many wildfires burning across Texas, as seven new fires popped up on Friday alone.

In Bastrop County , crews were able to contain the Pine Dump fire by late Saturday. The fire started Thursday night west of Smithville . Crews spent most of Saturday doing mop-up and monitoring hot spots that could flare up again, underscoring the high fire danger, especially in areas that haven't gotten rain recently.

The fire, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service, burned about 11 acres before it was contained.
