How do I make a custom pattern for my boat cushions?
Most boat cushions will match one of the shapes above and will not require a pattern. However, if your boat requires cushions in a non-standard shape, here are the steps to creating a pattern:
To begin, take a minute and review how your existing boat cushions look. This is your chance to correct any gaps and make improvements. Next, using paper, plastic or fabric to make the pattern, simply cut your pattern to the exact size desired. The more precise the pattern you provide, the more exact-fitting boat cushion we will be able to make. Please mark on your pattern “This side up” and which side(s) should be used for zipper placement and stripe direction. Keep in mind that most large V-berths work best with a zipper wrapping around three sides. Always mark the pattern for zipper placement on the hull side. Finally, if your boat cushions require a bevel, it works best if you provide a pattern for both the top and the bottom of the cushion. You also can write the different sizes of the bevel in each area on the pattern.
For a price quote, use the Pattern Shapes option and enter the largest dimensions (thickness, length and width) from your old boat cushions. As always, our experts in customer service are standing by to answer any questions or help you through the ordering process.
Do you make boat cockpit cushions?
We have over 20 years of experience making custom cockpit cushions for any boat. Just give us the dimensions of your boat cockpit cushions and we’ll cut them to your exact specifications. You can look them up online or in your boat’s manual or trace a pattern for us. Boat cockpit cushions can be made from three types of foam: traditional polyurethane indoor foam, dry-fast (reticulated) outdoor foam or Flotex closed-cell flotation foam. By clicking a shape above and then entering the dimensions, you’ll receive an instant quote.
Can you make boat cushions with beveled edges?
We can add a bevel to your boat cushions to match the contour of your boat. Simply enter the dimensions of the top (larger dimensions) after choosing one of the shapes above and add a comment in the shopping cart specifying the bevel instructions. If your beveled boat cushions are a bit more complicated and require a pattern, read the beveled pattern procedures in the “How do I make a custom pattern...” FAQ above.
Boat Cushion and Mattress Maintenance
Boat interiors are frequently moist. This moisture gets trapped between your cushions or mattress and the boards below. To help avoid problems with mold or mildew, air your mattresses or cushions outside in the sun every couple of days but don’t remove the covers. When you are not using your boat, store your mattresses or cushions vertically in the aisle. For added protection, you can sprinkle anti-fungal powder (found in most drug stores) on the platforms below your mattress or cushions, as well as on the bottom side of the cushions.

The Best Fabric, Foam & Zippers for Marine Interior Cushions
Best fabric for marine interior cushions.
There are some qualities you should look for in boat cabin upholstery fabric. Even though it's the interior of your boat, moisture is still present. You'll need a fabric that is mold and mildew resistant. That's why we recommend synthetic fabrics. Stay away from natural fibers like cotton for marine cushions.
The next step is to decide between a woven canvas upholstery fabric and a vinyl or faux leather material. Here's a quick summary of the characteristics and differences between vinyl or faux leather and woven canvas upholstery fabrics.
Vinyl & Faux Leather Fabrics:
- Higher abrasion resistance than canvas.
- Waterproof/very high water resistance.
- Not breathable; needs to be vented to allow for airflow.
- Heavier-weight fabric; might be harder to sew depending on your sewing machine.
- Only offered in solid colors.
Vinyl has always had a reputation for durability and practicality, but is somewhat lacking in luxury and softness. Faux leather, on the other hand, has always been seen as both durable and luxurious, but at a high cost. However, some vinyl fabrics have recently emerged in the textile world that are not only incredibly durable and abrasion resistant, but also impressively soft, supple and stylish.
EverSoft™ is one of these fabrics. A unique four-way stretch vinyl with an incredibly soft hand, EverSoft is perfect for high-end uses where look and feel are paramount. It flawlessly conforms to corners, curves and contours, and it keeps its shape without sagging or wrinkling. Available in two grain patterns and a wide variety of vibrant colors, EverSoft delivers the best in performance and aesthetics.
Our selection of vinyl and faux leather fabrics has upped the style factor. They are just as high-end and expensive-looking as real leather upholstery fabrics. A benefit of vinyl and faux leather is that, in addition to adding a touch of luxury to your cabin interior, they are nearly waterproof. If your boat cabin often gets damp, you might want to consider choosing from our selection of high-quality vinyl and faux leather upholstery fabrics.
Our Most Popular Vinyl & Faux Leather Fabrics:
- EverSoft™ Pebble and Smooth
- Morbern ® Bayside
- Naugahyde ® Nauga Soft
- Ultraleather ® Coast
- Ultraleather ® Summit
Explore our entire selection of vinyl and faux leather upholstery fabrics for marine interior cushions. Click here .
Our Most Popular Ultra-Microfiber Fabric:
- Ultrasuede ® HP
Check out our selection of Ultrasuede HP in rich, bold colorways. Click here .
Woven Canvas Fabrics:
- Abrasion resistant, but not as durable as vinyl and faux leather.
- Water resistant, but not as much as vinyl and faux leather.
- Breathable; does not need to be vented.
- Most home sewing machines can handle woven upholstery fabrics.
- Available in solids, stripes, geometrics, nautical patterns, florals and more.
If you love colors, patterns and making a statement with your upholstery, you can't go wrong with one of our high-quality woven textiles. Canvas upholstery fabrics are a great choice for marine interior cushions. Not only stylish and durable, our favorite woven upholstery performance fabrics are abrasion resistant, mold and mildew resistant, and solution-dyed. In fact, they're suitable for both interior and exterior marine cushions.
Here's a list of our recommended woven fabric brands for high-quality and stylish marine interior cushions:
Our Most Popular Woven Fabrics:
- Outdura ® Upholstery
- Sunbrella ® Upholstery
- SunRite™
- Covington Outdoor

Whether you prefer the timeless sophistication of rich vinyl or faux leather solids, or you're looking for a fun and bright pop of color and pattern from a canvas upholstery fabric, you are sure to find what you're looking for within our selection of hundreds of marine interior cushion fabrics.
Best Foam for Marine Interior Cushions
When it comes to foam selection, there is an important question to ask: Are you a liveaboard or occasional boater? If you live on your boat all year or part of the year, you need a foam that can withstand high traffic and everyday use. With a lifespan of up to 12 years, CushionRite ® Premium high density polyurethane foam (2.8 pounds per cubic foot) is the way to go. If you are a liveaboard whose cushions will get wet frequently, you'll need to make sure you choose a high density foam that is also antimicrobial. Wrap the foam in Cushion Wrap Silk Film (#103933) before inserting it into your cushion cover for even more protection.
Cushion Wrap Silk Film is a lifesaver for easily inserting your foam into your cushion cover. Wrap the silk film around your foam and then use a vacuum to shrink the foam. The silk film creates an airtight layer, allowing you to vacuum the air out of the foam so it's easy to slip into the cushion cover. Once you remove the vacuum hose, the foam will expand back to normal size and fill out the cushion cover. Because silk film is a waterproof barrier, it's crucial to leave some foam exposed at the zipper plaque to allow for airflow to the foam.
Not a liveaboard? In that case, we recommend an antimicrobial, CushionRite ® Standard medium density polyurethane foam (1.8 pounds per cubic foot) or CushionRite ® Dry Fast Foam for your cabin cushions. You can use high density if you want to, but it's not necessary for occasional boaters. Though it will last much longer than medium density and Dry Fast, it is also more expensive than medium density and does not drain water or breathe as efficiently as Dry Fast.
If you are making mattress cushions, we recommend Dry Fast Foam. Dry Fast has open pores, which allow air to circulate through the foam. This makes for a cool and comfortable mattress. Dry Fast is also antimicrobial.
For more information about foam, read our blog "Selecting the Right Marine Interior Foam" (#300055XHT) .
Best Notions for Marine Interior Cushions
For marine interior cushions, we recommend a size #5 continuous, molded tooth zipper chain with a plastic, single pull, non-locking slider. The molded tooth zippers we carry are UV treated and are made with DuPont Delrin ® plastic teeth molded to the fabric tape. They are incredibly strong and practically weatherproof. Should your cabin cushions get wet, molded tooth zippers are corrosion resistant.
Though we gravitate toward non-locking zipper pulls for our marine cushions, you can use a locking pull if you prefer. A locking zipper pull has a locking mechanism in the slider that prevents it from moving on its own. The zipper will only open when the slider is pulled.
For thread, we recommend a Tex 70, UV-treated polyester. Polyester thread is resistant to saltwater and mildew. It's our top recommendation to use on all your boat projects, both inside and out. Use a size #16 needle for woven upholstery fabrics and a size #18 needle for vinyl and faux leather fabrics.

Catalina 22 cabin cover or boat cover?
- Thread starter kenai

- Catalina 22
I just purchased a 1985 catalina 22 and need to do the work associated with buying a used boat that has had a bit of neglect for the last couple of years. I will be doing the wood work soon and want to get a cover to protect the wood and possibly the boat. Anyone have any opinions of going with the cabin cover that covers the main hatch and railings or is it worth just getting a full cover? I would like to leave the boat outside, but am worrying about 100+ degree summer weather. Any ideas and best location to get covers online. I didn't see the cabin cover at Catalina Direct.
Im in the same situation. The covers are very expensive to cover the entire boat at about $650.00. I looked at these http://www.sailorstailor.com/categories.asp
I noticed those as well. Catalina Direct also has full covers as well. What do you think about the cabin cover as opposed to the full cover? Have you seen the cabin cover anywhere? I am wondering if you just have to have them custom made. My boat has all of the snaps. I already have the poptop enclosure.
CD has the companionway covers. Look here: http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=170
I have seen those, but I have seen some covers that go over the railings as well so all of the wood is protected. I haven't seen those anywhere.
KingAirDriver
Great coat of wax and replace everything wood with plastic. That is what we are doing, cheaper and permanent. In 12 months we had to re-varnish the wood 4 times. 4 coats at a time. Not worth the effort.
Chris Patterson
Neal, I'm curious. What kinda varnish were you using? And a boat cover? Put a saw horse in the cockpit, and stretch a tarp across it..
That's cheating Chris! LOL! We were using Helmsman Spar Varnish. I know it wasn't the best, but from what I have seen, NOTHING holds up good in the Florida sunshine. Unless it is covered. We went the cheap route and bought the starboard stuff from CatDirect, the teak replacements and the associated covers were too rich for our blood, and our stuff was so far gone, it was not salvageable.
Has anyone used acrylic coating instead of wax? If so, how well did it work?
I would try a product called Insulator Wax. We use it on our airplanes and it lasts years. about 20 bucks a bottle, but a half dollar size dollop will do the ENTIRE boat, hull and deck. Heck, a silver dollar size dollop did an entire Beechcraft King Air! Stuff if fantastic.
Thanks! The Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax 845 gets great reviews on Amazon. I think I'll try some. I have read reviews of people using Acrylic coatings, and they LOVE them. Turns out, the coatings are the same as acrylic floor coatings: glossy, tough, uv resistant, long lasting, over-coatable, and a little goes a long way. They use it on RVs and other fiberglass toys with the same success as expensive acrylic sealants. I wonder if anyone has experience with them on boats. Also, the floor coating costs a small fraction the cost of other sealants. Andrew
Our 1980 C22 had the pop top camping cover and the snaps around the cabin top that held it. We had a Sunbrella cover that fit over the area in place of the pop top and down over the companionway that we covered the boat with when not in use. This covered all the wood parts and protected the boat top and companionway from the sun. Ray
watercolors II
Cover must be custom Some kind of protection must be provided if you want the wood to look good for a long time. I started with oil but it was only a month until it had to be reapplied. I used polyurethane and then spar varnish but it only lasted about 2 years even with sitting in a building for 5 months a year. After conferring with workers of the wooden boat shop at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michael, MD on the best marine wood finish, I redid my teak for the 5th time in the last 20 years. Oh, they said Flagship Spar Vanish minimum 13 coats! I painted 10 coats with light sanding between each coat two years ago and the wood looks as good as the day I did it but, after all the work of 10 coats I then covered everything with Sumbrella. This past fall I added an additional 6 coats with sanding between, looks like the wood is embedded in glass, wow! I used the snaps for the raised cabin top cover to attach this new self made cover, only had to add a couple snaps to go around the mast. I made the hem on the sides 3 layers thick and 3 inches wide to hang down below the snaps to cover the window wood eyebrow trim. The raised cabin top has a companion way extension in the cover that snaps to the companion way exterior wood trim and then a zipper in the center is used to enter the enclosed cabin. I extended this new cover down over the companion way hatch boards and used the snaps already in place to hold it, again I made extra large hem so the cover extended out over the companion way trim to keep it somewhat protected from the sun and rain. Now, I will tell you that this cover is not on the open market, so you will have to have a shop make it to fit if you do not have a family member with a sewing machine. I will also say if you want your bright work to look like new with a little touch up every couple years then the cost will be worth it because right now my wood looks like the day I varnished it a couple years ago. The Flagship varnish cost $45 a quart and with 16 coats one quart was not enough so, adding all the time to mask, sand and apply each coat of varnish, maybe the full cost to have a custom cover made might be a major savings in the future.
LC: If aesthetics aren't real high on your list, its easy to make a cover for the cabin and hatch area. I use an alum.-colored tarp as used to cover haystacks, cut to fit by me. then simply placed small stones wrapped with small lines for ties (or cheap grommets) and tie to lifeline stansions, mast, and winches. Easy to install and protects wood well. In winter I use a larger piece of same over entire trailered boat (w/wood block suppports under spreaders because of our snow load, plus a couple of supports in cockpit area to assure rainwater drains instead of pools. These last well and probably cost together ca. $200. RK of Wyoming
I know it looks redneckish but Wal-Mart tarps are what my dad used to use. It seemed every other year he was having custom made covers made for a 20 ft Wellcraft which were quite expensive. In the end, we said screw it and started using the blue or gray plastic tarps from Wal-Mart and they lasted just about as long, didn't look as professional but saved lots of money. Rubber Bunji cords and twine and 2x4's to reduce sagging which held rainwater.
Re: Cover must be custom Your cover sounds exactly like what I was thinking of. Do you happen to have any pictures of the your cover on your boat?
