Chris, a former Royal Marine, is also coxwain and trainer for the Hope Cove Lifeboat crew. He is an RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor with more than 25 years teaching experience both on and off the water.

RYA Powerboat Courses

New this year, we are very excited to be teaching RYA Powerboat Courses in the stunning Salcombe Harbour.

Learning to drive a powerboat safely and effectively is a crucial part of having a relaxing day on the water, and we have something on offer for everyone. Our RYA Powerboat Level 1 course is ideal for kids aged 8 – 12 who are looking to take their first foray into powerboat driving. Our experienced instructors will show your young-ones the most effective ways to drive boats (both wheel-steered and tiller-steered) and help provide them with confidence at the helm!

Our Powerboat Level 2 course is designed for adults and kids aged 12 or more – requiring no prior experience, it teaches all the skills taught in the Level 1 course, but takes them to a greater level of detail whilst also supporting the practical skills with theory knowledge – including knowledge of tides, weather and practical navigation. With your Powerboat Level 2 certificate, you can apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which allows you to hire boats internationally. The RYA PB2 certificate is also a pre-requisite for many jobs on the water!

As well as our formal RYA Powerboat training courses, we also offer refresher sessions, local knowledge teaching and familiarisation session. If you’ve just got a new boat, haven’t boated for a while or are going on holiday and fancy a refresher, please get in touch – we can put something together to meet your needs!

Our courses are taught across our two boats, Granite and Wally – you can see more about the boats here . We can often skew the course more towards one or the other if you have a preference. We can also conduct own-boat-tuition, delivering one of the RYA courses on your own boat – if this is of interest, please get in touch .

RYA Powerboat Level 1

Minimum age: 8 years old

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 is a fantastic introduction to driving boats for kids aged 8-12. It covers how to drive a powerboat safely both at slow speeds and quickly, how to moor alongside a pontoon, pick up a mooring and more. It also covers essential safety equipment and rescue techniques including man-overboard.

Our two day RYA Powerboat Level 1 course will give your child the skills they need to safely handle both tiller and wheel driven powerboats.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

Minimum age: 12 years old

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is targeted at adults and kids older than 12 and is an international standard for powerboat handling competency. No prior experience is required, although for younger students we often recommend attending a Powerboat Level 1 course first in order to be able to get the most from the course.

With your Powerboat Level 2 you can apply for an International Certificate of Competence which allows you to hire boats up to 10m long internationally.

If you have your own boat and would be interested in doing either the Powerboat Level 1 or Powerboat Level 2 course on your own craft, we can definitely help! It can be an excellent way to learn the best ways of handling your specific boat.

We can teach both courses on pretty much any type of powerboat, be it a RIB, wheel-steered ‘Boston Whaler’-type boat, tiller-steered outboard boat, traditional launch and anything in between – get in touch with us if you’re not sure.

RYA Powerboat 2 Course

The RYA Powerboat 2 course with Sea N Shore

2 Days £330 per person using our boat or when three book together as a group £960. We need a min of 2, max of 3 people per course.

Using your boat upto 3 people £650

If only one person on own boat to do the 2 day course, £650

We provide full waterproofs and lifejackets. Timings of the course are usually 9am – 4pm each day.

At the end of the course, as long as you have passed, you will get a full certificate RYA powerboat 2, that is registered with the RYA.
