The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four Canadian mariners on Saturday after their luxury yacht the Moon Dragon capsized about 140 miles from Wilmington, North Carolina.

On Saturday afternoon, around 12:18 p.m., the Coast Guard Command Center in Portsmouth, Virginia received an emergency signal from the Moon Dragon, a yacht that charters between the Mid-Atlantic and the Virgin Islands, USCG said in a new release .

A rescue operation was immediately launched and when rescue teams arrived on scene, they spotted the overturned 60-foot catamaran and a covered life raft. All four passengers were found safe and uninjured in the raft, said the USCG, adding that they had used a radio to contact and request assistance.

A Jayhawk helicopter was sent from Elizabeth City, North Carolina to retrieve the stranded mariners. Once on scene, the Jayhawk crew safely hoisted all four people aboard and took them back to Elizabeth City, where they underwent medical assessment.

Video footage from the rescue shows a crew member pulling up a passenger on a "basket" back to safety.

The rescued mariners said that their vessel's port and starboard side hatches broke causing water to enter the catamaran and cause catastrophic flooding, which forced them to abandon ship. Winds were reported to be at 35 mph and seas at 11 to 12 feet.

USCG said that the Moon Dragon remains partially submerged and that the Coast Guard is "issuing a hazard-to-navigation" safety broadcast to notify mariners transiting in the area.

“The ocean is unpredictable and unforgiving, and this case represents perfectly the value of being prepared at sea,” said Petty Officer First Class Austin Lang, said in a statement.

Lang emphasized the importance of the Emergency Position Indicating Radiobeacon (EPIRB) – devices that alert rescue authorities and indicate your location – a proper radio, and a functional life raft in saving the catamaran's passengers and ensuring the success of the rescue.

“These sailors had the right gear on board, it worked, they knew how to use it, and it’s because of that we were able to find them and bring them home safely,” said Lang.

The Moon Dragon is a charter catamaran, which is a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size. Moon Dragon has six luxury cabins with room for 10 passengers, according to Ocean Getaways , a “boutique” yacht charter company.

The luxury yacht boasts natural teak hardwood flooring, quartz walls in the shower, several fridges and freezers, ice makers, lounging areas, and multiple entertainment options. Prices started at $58,000 per week, according to Ocean Getaways.

‘Absolutely amazing’: Capt. of overturned luxury yacht off North Carolina coast thanks locals after crew’s rescue

E LIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WNCN) — The captain of an overturned luxury yacht off the North Carolina coast told CBS 17 Sunday that the four who were rescued from the catamaran Saturday are all safe.

The Moon Dragon 60-foot catamaran yacht encountered rough seas about 140 miles southeast of Wilmington just after noon Saturday.

Both port and starboard side hatches on the 2021 vessel broke leading to “catastrophic flooding” which forced the crew to abandon ship, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Wind was at 35 mph and seas were 11 to 12 feet.

A Coast Guard plane was launched from Elizabeth City and located the partially sunken yacht. A Coast Guard helicopter was then sent to the scene and rescued four crew members from the catamaran.

The group was then taken back to Elizabeth City.

“We are all safe. And the Coast Guard and locals have been absolutely amazing,” Moon Dragon Capt. Jason Kindree Jake told CBS 17.

The Moon Dragon is a charter catamaran and has six luxury cabins with room for 10 passengers, according to the website for the vessel. The lowest-priced weekly charter for just two guests is $58,000 with a $69,000 weekly rate for 10 guests, the Sailing Directions website reports.

Kindree now has a photo on his Facebook page of the rescued crew — all barefoot — with the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter Coast Guard crew after they landed in Elizabeth City on Saturday evening.

The crew is now in Raleigh while the Moon Dragon remains partially submerged and the Coast Guard has issued a hazard-to-navigation safety broadcast to notify mariners in the area.

“We are so happy for the overwhelming support the local community has offered,” Kendree said about their unexpected visit to Elizabeth City and Raleigh. “All I would say is that all of North Carolina that helped us is a fantastic community that’s here.”

The Moon Dragon earlier this month was at Yankee Point Marina in Lancaster, Virginia, where it underwent some cleaning and other work. The yacht then appeared at the Annapolis Boat Show which wrapped up Oct. 15.

The yacht offers charters between the Mid-Atlantic and the Virgin Islands.

The Jayhawk crew safely hoisted all four off the raft and airlifted them to Air Station Elizabeth City. They were treated by Pasquotank-Camden EMS. No injuries were reported. The catamaran crew told the Coast Guard that both their port and starboard side hatches broke on the 60-foot catamaran leading to catastrophic flooding which forced them to abandon ship around noon.

Four crew members from the luxury charter catamaran Moon Dragon are safe after being rescued 140 miles off the coast of North Carolina.

The 2021 Moon Yacht 60 flybridge catamaran Moon Dragon debuted at the 2022 Annapolis Boat Shows. It offers charters between the Mid-Atlantic and the Virgin Islands. The crewed charter boat with quartz walls and teak flooring can accommodate up to 10 overnight guests and can entertain 20 people on the flybridge. It has a private chef with a pizza oven and barista machine. It comes with water toys including personal watercraft, an eFoil, wakeboard, tube, standup paddleboards and snorkel gear for 12. The weekly price ranges from $58,000 (low season) to $69,000 (high season).

It was listed for sale in August at a price of $2.49 million.

Moon Dragon was fresh off a stint at the 2023 Annapolis Sailboat Show when its Canadian crew activated their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) around noon on Saturday.

The Coast Guard says the 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth, Virginia received the signal and launched an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Air Station Elizabeth City. The plane crew spotted the overturned catamaran and a covered life raft nearby. The sailors in the life raft were able to connect with the Hercules crew on the radio to ask for help.

The sailors were about 140 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina and they told the Coast Guard that both their port and starboard side hatches broke while they were at sea, leading to catastrophic flooding which forced them to abandon ship.

At the time, weather conditions included winds of 35 miles per hour and seas at 11 to 12 feet. 

A Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter launched and safely airlifted all four people from the life raft. Watch below:

The survivors were brought to shore to be checked out by EMS and no injuries were reported, the Coast Guard says.

The Coast Guard praised the charter boat’s crew for taking the right safety precautions for an unexpected emergency situation like the one that unfolded.

 “The ocean is unpredictable and unforgiving, and this case represents perfectly the value of being prepared at sea,” said Petty Officer First Class Austin Lang, operations unit controller.

He said the EPIRB, a proper radio, and a functional life raft were all major factors in the success of the rescue.  

“These sailors had the right gear on board, it worked, they knew how to use it, and it’s because of that we were able to find them and bring them home safely.”  

 As of Sunday, the Moon Dragon remained partially submerged. The Coast Guard issued a hazard-to-navigation safety broadcast to notify mariners in the area.

Wouter Hanekom

Hailing from South Africa, Wouter grew up going on weekend retreats with his family where water sports were the main activity. He can teach you a trick or two! His love of the water transitioned into sailing and he started sailing around the Mediterranean and Caribbean working for a large flotilla company.

He spent the last several years workings as a sailing instructor where he had the pleasure to teach and share his love of sailing with others. Most recently in the last year he has sailed a catamaran from Cape Town to Grenada, delivered several yachts throughout the Caribbean, as well as chartered in The Bahamas. Holding both his RYA Yachtmaster Offshore ticket as well as being a fully Certified ASA instructor, Wouter welcomes the opportunity to share his knowledge about sailing with those onboard.

Kelly Sargent

Kelly was first introduced to the yachting world in 2016 on a solo trip to Australia when she boarded her first charter as a guest in the Whitsunday Islands. The following year Kelly embarked on a couple more sailing trips to Croatia and the Caribbean, which became the inspiration for leaving her job as a designer in London and making the transition to yachting. In 2019, Kelly started her adventure on the water cooking around Crown Bay, St Thomas and Croatia and most recently worked in The Bahamas before relocating to the Virgin Islands.

Coming from a family of chefs, Kelly has always enjoyed spending time in the kitchen so it was no surprise that after attending The Avenue Cookery School she only strengthened her culinary skills and grew her passion for combining flavors and textures to create interesting dishes. Kelly is also able to work with any dietary requirements and is able to tailor a menu specific for any guest.

Anton Van Geffen

Our stew/deckhand hailing from South Africa is new to the industry but determined to making a positive lasting impression on his team and guests. Anton has worked this past summer on several yachts ranging from 60′ to 150′ in size doing a variety of tasks making him a jack of all trades and a perfect complement to our team. He brings a lot of hospitality experience from silver service wedding venue support to bartending and waiting tables and will be certain to keep Moon Dragon looking its very best. Anton is also a very experienced fisherman and would love to help guests set up a line and catch something exciting during the trip. He is very technology proficient and loves to fly drones and take and edit images so I’m sure he would love to get some great shots of our guests living their best lives which should be pretty easy on the fabulous Moon Dragon.

Captain: Wouter Hanekom

MEET THE CREW! Captain Wouter and Chef Kelly (Stew/Deckhand TBA) CAPTAIN: Wouter Hanekom Hailing from South Africa, Wouter grew up going on weekend retreats with his family where watersports were the main activity. He can teach you a trick or two! His love of the water transitioned into sailing and he started sailing around the Mediterranean and Caribbean working for a large flotilla company. He spent the last several years working as a sailing instructor where he had the pleasure to teach and share his love of sailing with others. Most recently in the last years he has sailed a catamaran from Cape Town to Grenada, delivered several yachts throughout the Caribbean, as well as chartered in The Bahamas and BVI. Holding both his RYA Yachtmaster Offshore ticket as well as being a fully Certified ASA instructor, Wouter welcomes the opportunity to share his knowledge about sailing with those onboard. CHEF: Kelly Sargent Kelly was first introduced to the yachting world in 2016 on a solo trip to Australia when she boarded her first charter as a guest in the Whitsunday Islands. The following year Kelly embarked on a couple more sailing trips to Croatia and the Caribbean, which became the inspiration for leaving her job as a designer in London and making the transition to yachting. In 2019, Kelly started her adventure on the water cooking around Greece and Croatia and most recently worked in The Bahamas and BVI. Coming from a family of cooks, Kelly has always enjoyed spending time in the kitchen so it was no surprise that after attending The Avenue Cookery School and Ashburton Cookery School she only strengthened her culinary skills and grew her passion for combining flavors and textures to create interesting dishes with a mediterranean flair. Kelly is also able to work with any dietary requirements and is able to tailor a menu specific for any guest. Stew/Deckhand: Anton Van Geffen Our stew/deckhand hailing from South Africa is new to the industry but determined to making a positive lasting impression on his team and guests. Anton has worked this past summer on several yachts ranging from 60' to 150' in size doing a variety of tasks making him a jack of all trades and a perfect complement to our team. He brings a lot of hospitality experience from silver service wedding venue support to bartending and waiting tables and will be certain to keep Moon Dragon looking its very best. Anton is also a very experienced fisherman and would love to help guests set up a line and catch something exciting during the trip. He is very technology proficient and loves to fly drones and take and edit images so I'm sure he would love to get some great shots of our guests living their best lives which should be pretty easy on the fabulous Moon Dragon.

Holding both his RYA Yachtmaster Offshore ticket as well as being a fully Certified ASA instructor, Wouter welcomes the opportunity to share his knowledge about sailing with those onboard.<br /> <br /> CHEF: Kelly Sargent<br /> <br /> Kelly was first introduced to the yachting world in 2016 on a solo trip to Australia when she boarded her first charter as a guest in the Whitsunday Islands. The following year Kelly embarked on a couple more sailing trips to Croatia and the Caribbean, which became the inspiration for leaving her job as a designer in London and making the transition to yachting. <br /> <br /> In 2019, Kelly started her adventure on the water cooking around Greece and Croatia and most recently worked in The Bahamas and BVI.<br /> Coming from a family of cooks, Kelly has always enjoyed spending time in the kitchen so it was no surprise that after attending The Avenue Cookery School and Ashburton Cookery School she only strengthened her culinary skills and grew her passion for combining flavors and textures to create interesting dishes with a mediterranean flair. Kelly is also able to work with any dietary requirements and is able to tailor a menu specific for any guest.<br /> <br /> Stew/Deckhand: Anton Van Geffen <br /> <br /> Our stew/deckhand hailing from South Africa is new to the industry but determined to making a positive lasting impression on his team and guests. Anton has worked this past summer on several yachts ranging from 60' to 150' in size doing a variety of tasks making him a jack of all trades and a perfect complement to our team. He brings a lot of hospitality experience from silver service wedding venue support to bartending and waiting tables and will be certain to keep Moon Dragon looking its very best.<br /> <br /> Anton is also a very experienced fisherman and would love to help guests set up a line and catch something exciting during the trip. New images show that our moon is way more colorful than just shades of gray. Instead, the orbital rock was observed to show tints of both blue and red.

The European Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer — abbreviated to Juice — snapped hue-filled photos of the lunar surface before it returned to Earth Tuesday.

They were taken from the craft’s Janus camera recently during a historic flyby of both the Earth and moon before plotting a course toward Venus in 2025 and Jupiter in 2031.

“The image shows some sign of real color differences in the large-scale features on the lunar surface,” the agency announced .

Newly released photos show the mares of the moon — flatlands of surface far from either pole — were found to emit a more bluish color.

An ESA spokesperson told the Telegraph that “darker regions” in the Mare Fecunditatis — next to the Apollo 11 landing site known as the Sea of Tranquility — “are related to terrains which were resurfaced by volcanic activity.”

Spotted by Apollo 15 astronauts almost half a century ago , the volcanic traces — also known as basaltic compositions — piqued the interest of a Janus operator, who saw some reds there as well.

“There are subtly different real hues from lunar basalts [blueish] and lava flows [reddish], and lots of color in some lunar samples,” Andrew Coates, a physics professor and the co-investigator of the camera, told the outlet.

While the ESA billed the differences as a “darker grey, light grey and even lighter grey,” Coates said that “it does look like there are some apparent real color differences.”

He noted that the basalt areas “are less reflective compared to the other brighter terrains” on the moon.

Those more vivid land masses are known as elevated highlands — a rugged landing site used by Apollo 16.

“Subtle color differences can occur due to slight differences in composition,” he said, adding that the sun’s light and camera calibration might be playing a role in the new images.

“It’s worth saying that the Janus cameras should get better images and with better calibration,” Coates said.

“So we’ll probably have to wait until September to know how real this is — but nevertheless it is interesting to see.”
