Royal Huisman Turns Hull of World's Largest Sloop: A Groundbreaking Milestone for Project 410

Royal Huisman, the storied Dutch shipyard known for pushing the boundaries of yacht design and engineering, has achieved a remarkable milestone in its 140-year history. The prestigious shipyard has successfully turned the hull of what will soon be the world’s largest sloop, a groundbreaking 85-meter (280-foot) yacht known as Project 410. This highly secretive project, which is shrouded in mystery and awe, represents the pinnacle of modern yacht design and engineering.

The hull turning of the Project 410 New World Sloop is not just another milestone; it is a monumental achievement that highlights Royal Huisman’s enduring commitment to innovation and excellence. The hull will now be placed back into Hall 2, which was extended specifically to accommodate this massive project. Here, it will undergo further construction, including the integration of its bow section, which is currently under development. An ancient country stretching the massive distance from Northern Europe to the farthest reaches of Asia, Russia is a fascinating destination rich in history and true adventure. From the exquisite Italianate beauty of St.Petersburg to the desolate perfection of the Kamchatka, the glitter of imperial Russia is omnipresent, imposing and incredibly powerful.

Looming above Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Russia is a sprawling destination whose frenzy of development over the last 15 years is unmatched by any other region. Russia is so many different cultures, customs and traditions tied up into one patchwork identity, it is sometimes hard to separate myth and stereotype from reality.

The only true way to realize the blinding glitter of imperial Russia, is to drink it in first-hand. It’s only natural that such a gargantuan land-mass would be home to diverse landscapes and cultural identities: Russia is no exception.

St.Petersburg The ancient beauty of St.Petersburg has made it a favourite among architectural and historical connoisseurs for hundreds of years. Evolved from a backwater swamp into a chic European metropolis, this is Russia’s ‘window to the west’.

Enjoying a delicious mixture of wending canals and delicate baroque edifices, this is a destination of serious beauty with an indulgent vein of luxury and sophistication. Gorgeous beneath the bloom of a vivid spring, St.Petersburg is a true Russian city and, as such, is at its most luminous beneath the snow.

Moscow When one speaks of Russia, Moscow can not be avoided. It was the heartbeat of the country for many years, home of the Kremlin and a dichotomous metropolis where ancient monasteries vie for attention beside avant-garde monoliths of new industry.

Magnificent in spring, when the parks overflow with bright flowers and the trees drip with vibrant leaves, Moscow is just as beautiful when the snow muffles the sounds of the city and travellers are left with a complex landscape of hushed urbanity.

Lake Baikal Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest lake, housing one-fifth of the planet unfrozen water: this glittering expanse of cobalt blue is encircled by a rugged coastline dotted with scrub and forest. Chartering a yacht to cruise this incredible global treasure is worth the effort, and will prove to be an indulgent experience of complete relaxation.

Kamchatka Peninsula Known as the ‘land of fire and ice’, the Kamchatka Peninsula is one of the most beautiful areas on earth. Located beside Alaska, this rugged area boasts lush forests, crystalline rivers teeming with salmon, immense herds of wild reindeer and, above all, volcanoes.

Over 200 exist in this area and intrepid outdoor enthusiasts can hike up to witness their primeval bubbling and spurting. Most areas require a helicopter or a 6 wheel-drive vehicle, so come prepared for the experience of a lifetime in this compelling region of feral beauty.

Vladivostok Vladivostok is one of Russia’s furthest outposts and until a few years ago, off limits to all travellers, even Russians. Home to the Russian Pacific Fleet, it was a high-security area reserved for the navy and select icebreakers, but now the ports have been opened to the public and this Asian trading post has boomed into a hyper-chic destination indulging in excess of every kind.

Whether travellers want to surround themselves in the cosmopolitan amenities of this city itself, or take off to a near-by island beach, secluded and formerly navy-only, Vladivostok is the perfect place to dig in.

Leapher Yachts NAVIX50

“The NAVIX50 embodies our philosophy of creating vessels that excel in any environment,” Leapher CEO Yiannis Andriotis said in a statement. “From the Drake Passage to the coast of St. Tropez, this yacht redefines what’s possible in the sub-500GT category.”

The spacious interior includes six generous cabins, with the option for a seventh cabin or expanded skylounge. The guest cabin on the main deck can also be turned into a gym, wellness area, or an expanded owner’s suite. All guest cabins are equipped with king-size beds, while the owner’s suite is fitted with a plush super king-size bed. The yacht is also home to six crew cabins that can sleep up to 11.

The exterior decks are replete with alfresco dining areas, lounges, and sunbeds. The aft deck is arguably the standout, with two folding terraces, a large, 18-foot pool, a sprawling sunbathing area, a swim platform, and not one but two wet bars. At the opposite end, the foredeck doubles as a garage for two tenders.

“It [the NAVIX50] offers unparalleled versatility and luxury while maintaining an attractive value proposition for seasoned owners,” added Andriotis.

Leapher operates on a site formerly owned by cruise ship producer De Hoop that closed at the height of the pandemic. The yard is set to deliver the first NAVIX60 later this month. Christened Horizon, the 198-foot explorer will be on display at the Monaco Yacht Show from September 25 to 28.

Next-Level Cruising: 2022 Palm Beach PB70 For Sale

  • By Donny Gilbert
  • September 4, 2024

Palm Beach PB70 Falcon

Looking for a stout, finely finished, high-performing Downeast-style yacht with a thoroughly modern build? Falcon , a 2022 Palm Beach PB70, has just entered the market with Grand Banks at $4.999 million.

“Her lines are much sleeker than those of most other boats in her class, many of which tend to skew more classical and, frankly, more boxy,” Yachting previously reported . “This boat is sexy, with a raked windshield and gently curving sheer line that reaches aft toward a generous tumblehome.”

Palm Beach PB70 Falcon

Construction is vacuum-infused E-glass with carbon fiber for structural areas. The deck and superstructure are built with infused carbon fiber for strength without added weight. Coring is Airex and Corecell foam.

Boarding Falcon via the teak swim platform, the cockpit is accessed through a transom door to starboard. The first things I noticed were the teak sole, fixed Bimini and al fresco space to entertain family and friends. Guests can relax on an L-shaped settee with a custom hi-low teak table or the aft-facing L-shaped settee with table to starboard. Grill a few burgers for lunch on the Kenyon electric BBQ before grabbing a few water toys out of the garage. Falcon ’s tender garage is currently used for stowage with the tender stowed on the hardtop. Rinse off using the cockpit shower with fresh hot/cold water and dry off in the sun on a couple sun pads or an inset settee for two on the foredeck. Some other amenities include:

  • Remote docking station
  • Underwater lights
  • Cockpit courtesy lights
  • Cockpit cover
  • Cockpit wet bar with Silestone “Eternal Calacatta Gold” countertop with AC/DC refrigerator, freezer, sink, storage
  • Designated glassware cabinet
  • Teak cockpit sole with day hatch to the tender garage
  • Garage w/built-in with electric door, ladder, custom paddle board holders, custom bike holders, custom storage box for snorkeling gear & Seabob
  • Opacmare Transformer hydraulic swim platform (900-pound capacity) with stainless-steel staple rail and removable tender chocks

Palm Beach PB70 Falcon

A set of double teak doors from the cockpit lead to the salon. A Burmese teak interior is illuminated by natural light flowing in through the windows that surround the salon. Relax on the portside sofa with a hi-low teak table that converts to an additional berth, settee with table to starboard, barrel chair and custom ottoman with flip fabric/teak lid. Solid teak cabinetry and lockers provide stowage space for salon accessories. Catch a game on the retractable flat- screen TV or nose into a book using the custom reading lights.

Key Market Trends Fueling Growth

The luxury yacht market is witnessing significant growth due to the increasing adoption of advanced materials, particularly carbon fiber, in yacht manufacturing. Traditional yachts are often built using steel or aluminum, which adds weight and reduces fuel economy. However, carbon fiber extensively reduces a yacht's weight, making it faster and more fuel-efficient. Although carbon fiber has a higher manufacturing cost than steel or aluminum, the cost savings from improved fuel economy offset this expense. Additionally, carbon fiber provides increased strength and durability, enabling yachts to withstand harsh sea conditions. Notable collaborations, such as Azimut Benetti Spa and Loro Piana's partnership in 2021, further fuel the market's growth as high-end brands embrace the benefits of carbon fiber in luxury yacht production.

The luxury yacht market is experiencing significant growth, with sales of superyachts, mega yachts, and luxury boat rentals on the rise. Top luxury yacht builders are focusing on innovative designs and amenities, including high-end yacht interiors, advanced technology, and luxurious features. Yacht lifestyle is a major trend, with yacht parties, events, and vacations becoming increasingly popular. Entities like yacht clubs and brokers play crucial roles in facilitating yacht ownership and charters. Brands are competing to offer the most luxurious yachts, with prices reaching new heights at yacht auctions. Length, motors, and materials like woods and fiber reinforced polymers are key considerations for yacht construction. The shipping sector and yacht tourism contribute significantly to economic activity and traveling activities, crossing international borders. Yacht insurance, maintenance, refurbishment, customization, accessories, navigation, and propulsion are essential aspects of yacht ownership.

Market Challenges

Luxury motor yachts offer every modern convenience onboard, including air conditioning, television, navigation aids, radar, echo-sounding, and autopilot. To power these amenities and sail at speeds up to 70 knots, motor yachts use large gasoline or diesel-powered internal combustion engines (ICEs). However, the high fuel requirements and operational costs of these engines make luxury motor yachts more expensive to operate and fuel than sail yachts. For instance, refueling a large Sunseeker Yacht can cost over USD50,000 each time. The high operational costs limit the commercial use of luxury motor yachts, as their private operation is less common. Additionally, the choice of chartered holiday destinations and services can vary greatly, requiring chartered service providers to offer differentiated services to meet unique customer demands. Multiple brokers may be involved in enhancing business opportunities, increasing operational costs and complexities. Leasing a large yacht can cost USD50,000 - USD55,000 per week, making the high cost of operation a significant hindrance to market growth during the forecast period.

1.1 Sail yachts-  Luxury sail yachts, measuring 80 feet or longer, offer an exclusive experience with their traditional sailing capabilities and modern conveniences. Though auxiliary engines provide backup power, sails serve as the primary means for propulsion. Factors such as smaller engines, increased automation in production, and fiberglass hulls contribute to lower prices compared to motor yachts. These yachts feature air conditioning, television, navigation aids, radar, echo-sounding, autopilot, computer-controlled electric winches, and reliable power-generating systems. Despite a decreasing market share, the luxury sail yacht segment is projected to grow consistently with a two-digit CAGR due to increasing demand for recreational use. The cost advantage of sail yachts makes them an attractive option for those seeking a leisurely sailing experience.

The Incredible World

Germany Seizes World's Largest Yacht Owned by Russian Oligarch

luxury yacht magazine

This story was updated at 19:48 p.m. on Saturday to clarify that the vessel was seized, not confiscated.

Germany has officially seized the world's largest superyacht owned by Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, as part of sanctions against Moscow following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, police sources said Thursday.

The 156-meter (1,680-feet) long "Dilbar" has an estimated value of $600 million (555 million euros) according to Forbes magazine.

Since last October the boat has been docked for repairs in a Hamburg shipyard.

German customs had been eyeing the superyacht for several weeks, but could not formally seize it earlier due to a legal imbroglio over its ownership.

Eventually, the German Federal Judicial Police indicated that they had succeeded "after lengthy investigations, and in spite of concealment via offshore companies, in identifying the owner of the M/S Dilbar and it is Gulbakhor Ismailova, the sister of Alisher Usmanov."

"The luxury yacht is now under the sanctions regime and so could be confiscated in Hamburg," police added on Twitter.

The Russian billionaire and his sister are both targeted by European sanctions against Russian oligarchs as well as members of their families.

Usmanov, 68, was ranked sixth in the Sunday Times' list of the richest people in the UK in 2021.

He is one of the dozens of Russian oligarchs hit by Western sanctions since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine.

On Wednesday, English Premier League football club Everton suspended its sponsorship agreements with several companies in which Usmanov held shares.

The confiscation of the "Dilbar" is just the latest in a string of seizures of Russian superyachts under the Western sanctions.
