The Midas Touch: $4.8 Billion History Supreme Most Expensive Yacht Ever Sold

We’ve seen some opulent yachts, but the 100-foot History Supreme takes the gold-encrusted cake. Stuart Hughes, a British purveyor of luxury gadgets, took a break from his role as an iPad alchemist to create the $4.8 billion superyacht, covered in platinum and gold from bow to stern.

Purchased by an anonymous Malaysian businessman, History Supreme is the most expensive yacht ever sold, according to Luxury Launches. The Daily Mail reports that the impressive vessel took three years to complete and used over a staggering 220,462 pounds of precious metals. Everything – from the base of the boat, to the deck, dining area, rails and anchor – were decked out in gold and platinum.

The exorbitant price tag is also the result of the lavish master bedroom, adorned in platinum with a wall feature that is made from meteoric stone and a genuine T-Rex dinosaur bone. It is rumored that Robert Kuok purchased the superyacht, worth 10 times the amount Roman Abramovitch (previous title holder for world’s most expensive yacht) paid for the Eclipse megayacht. Kuok is one of only three Malaysians with a net worth of $5 billion or more, according to Forbes billionaire’s list . If the purchase price is accurate, “the most likely buyer is Robert Kuok , the richest man in Malaysia, with a net worth of $12.5 billion,” reports Business Insider .

History Supreme: The £3 Billion Gold Plated Yacht

By Ben Roberts

Intriguing reports have emerged regarding the world’s most expensive superyacht today. Worth almost ten times more than Eclipse, the largest yacht in the world, the 30.48m Gold plated superyacht, History Supreme, has now apparently hit the water.

History Supreme has been a well kept secret in the Superyacht Industry, which is understandable as the yacht itself is reportedly worth over £3 billion. Containing around 100,000kg of gold and platinum, History Supreme was designed by Stuart Hughes, the world renowned luxury designer, and took just over three years to complete.

Her hull and exterior design are both wrapped in the most sought after precious metals on the planet, coating elements of the deck, dining area, rails and even the anchor.

History Supreme also holds one of the most unique interior features to ever grace a yacht; a wall feature which is made from meteor stone and Tyrannosaurus Rex bone.

However, we feel it is highly unlikely that a superyacht adorned to this level will ever actually grace the waters, and if the reports are in fact true, it would be far better suited to a museum exhibit than a life on the ocean.

Fidler took a circuitous route to yacht ownership. He studied computer electronics engineering at a point where technology was moving so fast that his education was obsolete by the time he graduated.

After university, he traveled around the world, living in the Amazon Rainforest, Chile’s Atacama Desert, and different parts of Europe. While in South America, he met people who told him about the yachting industry, and a few months later he landed a job as a deckhand aboard the yacht Solemates in South Florida.

Superyacht 'AK Royalty'

After working his way up through ever-larger yachts to the position of chief engineer aboard an 180-footer, Fidler used his engineering background and began developing products for the marine industry. He initially produced circuits to improve phone connections between yachts and docks, before eventually cofounding tech company Furrion with his brother.

The duo began with commodity products such as televisions and entertainment systems and marinized them. They then bought a Numarine 78HTS and installed the first AI concierge system that provided weather and onshore restaurant recommendations, even advising guests what to wear. When the Fidlers sold Furrion in 2021, annual sales were $350 million.

Superyacht AK Royalty

“My goal during all those years of hard work was to have my own boat,” Fidler says. “I’d always dreamed of having a Palmer Johnson. They built the most beautiful, sexiest boats. When AK Royalty came along, I knew it was the one.”

A large part of the multimillion-dollar, six-month refit focused on transforming the existing white exterior into glittering gold. “It took time, money, and energy getting the mix of 24-karat-gold dust and marine paint just right so that it glints under the sun’s reflection,” he says.

AK Royalty superyacht

Then there was the development of AK Royalty ’s lighter, fun side to lure day charterers, via Burgess Yachts, who would want to enjoy it from the home port of Dubai. A dive compressor center, inflatable slide, fly board, and 12-person floating trampoline are just some of the toys. There’s also a six-person Jacuzzi on the sun deck, a state-of-the-art AV sound system with iPad controls, and DJ deck on the aft deck.

The boat’s engineering systems were upgraded, including the air-conditioning and generators that can power other boats when traveling off-grid. “I want all the backup systems required to explore remote regions in comfort,” says Fidler.

The refurbished interior enjoys gold fittings, Fendi carpets, and soft furnishings. In keeping with its ostentatious exterior, faux wildlife is big on board, with silver tiger sculptures in almost every room.

The original his-and-hers bathroom in the master suite was ripped out and remodeled into one large marble-clad ensuite with a steam shower, sauna and full-sized bathtub.

Fidler and his family are using the vessel to cruise the UAE and Oman. Next year, the plan is to head to the Red Sea before crossing to the Mediterranean. “I don’t like traveling slow, so I tell the captain to go everywhere at warp speed,” says Fidler.

At 38 mph, AK Royalty delivers.

7 Deadliest States With The Shortest Life Expectancy (& Why)

This cute colorado town is the perfect alternative to telluride, 7 best small towns in california for a weekend retreat.

The Khalilah yacht was recently spotted off the coast of Croatia which has generated some buzz about the $28-million dollar sea craft. Outfitted with a gold exterior, this yacht is one that's tough to miss as it cuts through the shimmering waters off coastal cities. A yacht this expensive deserves to be seen and when it is, people have questions.

As it turns out, the yacht is currently for sale, but it's also available to charter... for a fairly steep price. Despite its construction back in 2015, Khalilah is still just as luxurious and decadent in design as if it were built only yesterday. So what does the inside of this seaworthy gold bar, and why is it such a big deal?

Outside Of The Yacht

Khalilah was designed by Palmer Johnson and was always intended to be eye-catching. Its design was a perfect example of modernity and sleek curves, which are apparent in its streamline shape. As it cuts through the water, the sun shimmers not only off its cresting wake but also off its exterior - which is finished in a custom shade called Cordova Gold.

Everything about the exterior of this yacht has been designed with competitive luxury in mind, from the bow that simply slices through the water to its minimalistic, yet high-end, options for deck seating and ocean views. Under the open sky, guests can socialize in the covered dining area or spend some lazy days on the sunpad-filled lounge.

The stairs down to the beach club are actually hidden from the exterior view but can be found off the outside art deck. From here, a pair of sliding glass doors lead to a bathing area, where a jetpack, wakeboard, waterboard, kayaks, paddleboards, and inflatables are kept. The skylounge is also located here, which is home to al fresco dining and entertainment space, as well as a covered terrace with a spa pool and oversized sunpad.

Inside The Yacht

If that wasn't enough to sell anyone on the amazing architectural detail of this yacht, then the inside surely will be. The interior design has subtle Asian influences combined with modern detail, combining massive windows with sleek lines and a contemporary finish of simple textures.

The yacht's birchwood bar leads directly into a full-beam salon. The decor here revolves around the strategic placement of LED lights and glass window installments, creating the perfect balance of natural and artificial lighting. The galley kitchen on the yacht was worked into the overall design, intending to be seen with its open floor plan. Here, guests will also find a breakfast bar for smaller meals, but the entire area can be opened as one space with the connecting salon.

The skylounge is the true gem of this yacht; with a fully-equipped entertainment system, this space is perfect for lounging or dancing the night away. The walls were designed with curved glass, offering a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding ocean while out at sea.

Speed, Guest Size, Renting Protocol

The Khalilah can cruise at a top speed of 26 knots , with an average cruising speed of 15 knots. The craft also required no stabilizers, due to the installation of a 10.8-meter beam.

When it comes to personal space on the yacht, there's plenty - a total of five staterooms can be found, including two master suites, which accommodate a total of 11 people. On the lower deck, a 9-person crew can be accommodated as well, and each stateroom has its own en suite bathroom.

A Malaysian Businessman Just Spent $4.8 Billion On A Yacht Made Of Solid Gold

Talk about extravagance.

An anonymous Malaysian businessman just spent $4.8 billion on a superyacht covered in platinum and gold, making it the most expensive yacht ever sold, according to Luxury Launches .

The boat, named the History Supreme, is the work of Stuart Hughes , a British purveyor of luxury gadgets.

It took three years to complete and is covered in 100,000 kilograms of precious metals, according to The Daily Mail.

The master bedroom is particularly lavish; it's adorned in platinum and has wall art made of meteoric stone and the bones of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The solid gold yacht

Robert Kuok, the richest man in Malaysia, with a net worth of $ 12.5 billion, spent an incredible $ 3.8 BILLION on a yacht, made of solid gold.

055E1D63 9AA8 4788 A8AD EA51E6AC3323

This yacht, with gold and dinosaur bones, is worth ten times more than Roman Abramovitch’s Eclipse, which previously held the title of the most expensive yacht in the world.

Kuok is the founder of the Shangri La hotel group, which operates luxury hotels in Asia, but most of his wealth comes from his stake in Wilmar, the world’s largest publicly traded palm oil company. .

The luxury took three years to complete and is covered in 100,000 kilograms of precious metals, including a solid gold hull. The master bedroom is particularly luxurious: it is adorned in platinum and has wall art made of meteoric stone and the bones of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

However, it stands out from the History Supreme at 98.4 feet.

Details about the ship, including why it was so expensive, had nothing to do with onboard technology, amenities, performance, or even fuel efficiency.

The project was commissioned to Stuart Hughes, famous British designer and jeweler of high-end gadgets, which includes among his extravagant creations an iPhone version produced with 135 grams of 24-karat gold and 600 white diamonds. and a rare black diamond, valued at $ 16 million. And since he wanted a truly exclusive container, he gave the designer carte blanche to lead the way in the use of precious materials.

Another work of the designer, available with the superyacht, is a bottle of luxury liquor with an 18.5 carat diamond, the D ’Amalfi Limoncello Supreme, valued at $ 35 million. Because alcohol is never good enough in a normal bottle. There is also a panoramic wall aquarium made from solid 24 karat gold, around 150 pounds.

It turns out that History Supreme was designed to be the most decadent piece of naval architecture ever created. It’s literally wrapped in solid gold and platinum, includes gemstones in the design, and depending on who you believe, it comes with several other famous Hughes creations, some more quirky than others.

The entire container actually includes about 220,463 pounds of solid gold as a building material. The base is wrapped in gold, and is also incorporated into the deck, dining room, railings and anchor, and kitchenware. The stairs on the upper deck are said to be made of solid gold.

Platinum is also used a lot, especially in the chef’s kitchen and master suite, which, to boot, also features a wall made from meteoric stone and a sculpture made from real T-Rex dinosaur bone sourced from Arizona. The bone is only worth about $ 89,000.

In total, the British jeweler applied 100,000 kilos of 24-karat gold to the construction of the History Supreme.

“It was the most ambitious project I have done so far. It took three years of planning, ”revealed designer and jeweler Stuart Hughes.

There are interior steps up to the flybridge from the starboard aft pilothouse. There is a Stidd helm seat and L-shaped seating to port with a hi/lo teak table. The wetbar with U-Line ice maker, stainless steel sink and stainless steel grill are to starboard. There are two large fiberglass weatherproff dunnage storage boxes aft of the seating.

The flybridge is covered by an enclosed Bimini forward and aft of the hinged arch. Because the flybridge deck comes all the way aft to cover the aft deck, there is plenty of room for the Novurania 14' tender, Nautical Structures 1500 lb. davit and still room for a jet ski, smaller tender or lounge chairs.

Novurania 14' RIB with newer (only 3 hours) Mercury 50HP Outboard on tender davits on the aft deck.

MONACO’S FAMOUS HISTORIC YACHTS AND MORE

gold yacht

The “Pacha III” looks almost “tiny” with its 36 meters, but the timeless beauty is still a place of honor in the harbor. After all, it belongs to the oldest sister of Prince Albert II, Princess Caroline . Although it is not one of the largest luxury yachts in the Principality of Monaco, it is often the center of interest. Dozens of paparazzi photos show Caroline of Hanover and her Casiraghi sprouts along with partners and friends on the legendary boat. Could she say, the 79-year-old “Pacha III” would have something to say. The yacht was bought just before the death of Caroline’s second husband, Stefano Casiraghi, son to a prominent Italian family, who died in an off-shore crash in October 1990 off the coast of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, near Monaco. Since then “Pacha III” has a special meaning for Princess Caroline and her family. In the year 2000 Stefano‘s mother, Fernanda Casiraghi-Biffi, was awarded the Foglio Italiano of Montecarlo – Foglio d’Oro Prize for her merits in charity events and as President of Engeco SAM, (now owned by Pizzarotti &C S.P.A.) a very important building company in the Principality. It is an habit to the Monaco family to have composed names yachts: Princes Rainier and Grace used to own “Stalca” St (ephanie) Al (bert) Ca (roline) a yacht, after naming Albercaro Alber (t) and Caro (line) their first yacht. Princess Stephanie named her yacht “Louine”, of course after her two first kids, Lou (is) and (Paul) ine . In the XIX and XX centuries, Prince Albert I , great-great-grandfather of Albert II, owned four, increasingly impressive research yachts: Hirondelle, Hirondelle I, Princess Alice and Princesse Alice I, named after his second beloved wife, the American-born Alice Heine , Duchess of Richelieu . Back to the Caroline and Stefano’s boat, previously she already had several names such as Briseis, Cardigrae, Priamar and Arlette II. The name “Pacha III” is made up of the initials of their three children Pierre, Andrea and Charlotte together. Pacha , means P (ierre) A (ndrea) Cha (rlotte). Also, it is a nice coincidence that the initial of Alexandra, the Caroline and Ernst August Hanover ‘s daughter, is the last letter of Pacha… Caroline had to add the “III” because there existed already a Pacha, Pacha I and a Pacha II. She was originally built in 1936 by the British shipyard Camper & Nicholson in Southampton. Her dark blue steel hull is slender 5.60 meters wide and has a draft of 2.50 meters. On board nine guests can be accommodated by seven crew members. The Grimaldi Clan uses the yacht regularly for trips in the Mediterranean. Now Caroline’s children are increasingly using the boat. So also recently newlewds Pierre Casiraghi and noblewoman Beatrice Borromeo .

Probably no other family of rulers of Europe can be seen under the media’s observation, like the Monegasque princes’ house. The millenarian history of the Grimaldis is at least as interesting as their current glamorous performances. Fast boats and beautiful women, international jet set, the Grimaldi Forum Congress Centre, the Prince’s committment to sustainability and once a year Formula 1 Grand Prix , the Rose and the Red Cross Gala, all this an much more is Monaco. But what would the dwarf state on the Côte d’Azur be without the Grimaldis? The princely family is probably the best PR machine for their country. Whether it’s the joy of the world or the catastrophe – (the Grimaldi Royal House, founded in 1297, is the oldest in Europe) the world is there live. The Grimaldis now land regularly on the covers of the boulevard and lifestyle media. The first attention is given to the first-born daughter Caroline (* 1957). The failure of their first and later annullated marriage to much older real estate agent Philippe Junot was also in the limelight as the accidental death of her second husband Stefano Casiraghi . Her last marriage to Ernst August Prinz of Hanover , to which she owes the title of Caroline Prinzessin from Hanover, always provides grateful material for the Yellow Press. Her younger sister, Stéphanie (* 1965), also contributed a lot to bringing the family back into the flash of lightning. Meanwhile the sisters have calmed down. Both engage in social projects; Caroline has three grandchildren, Stéphanie got three children from two marriages. HSH Albert II is now in the center of interest. No wonder he is a prince, he has a beautiful wife – and adorable twins.

Well, now I invite you to continue navigating the website and make a Graceful tour in the Galapagos with the Grace Yatch! Although M/Y Grace looks as young and chic today as the princess who honeymooned aboard her in the 1950s, she is nonetheless what the French call “une femme d’un certain age”: born in 1928, just before The Crash silenced the Roaring Twenties, she’s surrendered none of her youth’s glamour to the scars and wrinkles of a gallant life, including a stint chasing submarines during World War II. Combat aged on her, but benefactors like Aristotle Onassis, John Issa, and Prince Rainier ensured she was kept in the style to which she was accustomed. Now, as the M/Y Grace, she plies the waters of the Galapagos Islands, once again the elegant hostess to carefree, adventurous, perfect parties. M/Y Grace bore many names since Santiago Soulas, an Argentinean, commissioned her in Southampton. She weighed 298 tons, was 147 feet long, with a 23-foot beam and a draft of 12 feet. Soulas kept her four years before selling her to Zarch Couyoumbian, a Greek gentleman who named her Rion. In 1938, Sir George Tilley, chairman of the Prudential Insurance Co., acquired and enjoyed her until 1939, when the British conscripted her for the war effort. The Royal Navy – well-heeled in warships – needed smaller vessels for coastal patrols and snatched yachts from the Mediterranean and the Caribbean playgrounds. Rion found herself in a Tynemouth shipyard, stripped of her furnishings and paneling. She was strengthened to carry a 12-pound quick-firing gun on the forecastle, twin 40mm Oerlikons alongside the bridge and a rack on the stern holding eight 300 lb. depth charges. The corporate crew quarters were removed and hammock-hooks were welded to the deck. The forward suite became the operations and sonar room, another suite became the radio room, and the aft suite was an ammunition magazine. On October 21, 1939, she joined the Royal Navy with a crew of 20 under the command of Lt. T. Brydon, RNVR. She and 15 other vessels patrolled the entrances to the Solent and along the Isle of Wight: calm waters with the Germans focused on the skies.

lux-rion-grace-kelly-yacht

On patrol off the Nab Tower, however, a Dornier 110 returning from a bombing raid stafed Rion. She took some damage to her superstructure but suffered no casualties. On May 26, 1940, during Operation Dynamo, Rion was dispatched to the beaches of Dunkirk to evacuate the British Expeditionary Force. She made three 39-mile runs from Dunkirk to Dover, each time delivering 300 soldiers. On her third run, a near-miss from a bomb off her starboard bow killed 14 soldiers and one sailor and left shrapnel holes in the hull. Repaired in Portsmouth, she resumed duty in the channels from Portsmouth to Southampton. Rion’s finest hour came on November 22, 1940 with a daring nighttime capture. She was patrolling south of the Isle of Wight with HMS Shemara and HMS Valera. At 2:44 a.m. radar contact was obtained 10 miles southwest. Lt. Brydon ordered pursuit and discovered a German E-boat floundering in the swells, and Rion and Shemara opened fire from astern of the boat. The Germans returned small-arms fire but surrendered when a shell from Rion hit her bridge. Rion escorted the E-Boat to the Portsmouth Harbour naval base. Rion had not finished yet: she discovered a submarine on the night of March 23, 1941, and made numerous depth charge runs, but the large oil slick seen at dawn was insufficient evidence to confirm that Rion had destroyed the U-boat. By June 3rd, Rion’s port engine had been crippled, and she was decommissioned for three months before returning to duty: stripped of armaments and refitted with three-tier bunks and a red cross painted on her sides and upper deck, she became an annex to the Royal Navy Hospital. Here she remained until the war’s end, when she was rechristened HMS Noir. On October 1945 she was decommissioned and 17 months later she arrived at her original builders—Southampton’s Camper & Nicholson—for restoration. On September 16, 1947 she was returned to Sir George Tilley. Upon Sir George’s death in 1951, Aristotle Onassis ’ charter firm acquired HMS Noir and renamed her Arion. Two years later, the yacht became property of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco as a wedding gift from Aristotle Onassis.

Over the course of the next 2 years the yacht was refitted to embark her new era as one of the most elegant and tasteful Galapagos Cruise yachts to sail the enchanted Galapagos Islands. The cabins are in the Sun Deck, the top-most deck of the yacht where one can find plenty of reclinable lounge chairs for sunbathing or for reading in the open air. The Albert Deck has 2 Master Suites and 2 Twin Suites with ocean-view windows. The captain’s bridge, the al-fresco lounge and al-fresco bar are also located on this deck. The Carolina Deck is fitted with 5 Premium Staterooms (double and twin) with ocean-view port-holes. The Monaco Deck is the main deck of the yacht with the interior dining room, the reception area and the main lounge. On the outside of this deck there are the al-fresco dining area, the stern resting area and the jacuzzi. And… A FABERGE IMPERIAL EGG EMBODIES A FABULOUS LUXURY YACHT FULL OF HISTORY: THE STANDART YACHT

MOSCOW. Last but not least, and exort ing you to read the Fabergé Eggs history in the CULTURE & MONACO WEALTHS wish to report a curiosity about fabolous luxury yachts , with the description of the Fabergé Standart Yacht Leaf Egg . The “Standart 1909” is a transparent hollowed-out rock crystal egg, mounted horizontally, with a gold band with inlaid leaves of green enamel and small diamonds marking the separation point between upper and lower halves, which bears the inscription “Standart 1909”. The surprise is a golden replica of the Imperial Yacht , the Standart Yacht, made of gold and platinum , and coated in vitreous enamel . The model rests on a carved bed of crystal representing the ocean, but can be removed from the egg.

gold yacht

The c5,500 ton Standart was commissioned by Tsar Alexander III in Copenhagen . It was launched in 1895 and was 116 meters long, which made it the largest yacht in the world at that time. Outfitted with ornate fixtures, including mahogany paneling, crystal chandeliers, and other amenities (including a stable with a cow to provide the imperial children with fresh milk) it was a floating palace for the Russian Imperial Family for their vacations in the Baltic Sea. The Russian Imperial Family was vacationing on the Standart during the summer of 1914, when they received the news of the aassassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo, marking the start of World War I . After the Russian Revolution the ship was placed in drydock until 1936, when she was converted to a minelayer. During World War she played a significant role in the defence of Leningrad.

‘That was amazing': Drexel rowing community celebrates Justin Best's rowing gold

Drexel university alum justin best helped push the u.s. men's four boat to gold at the 2024 paris olympics, by dan stamm • published august 1, 2024 • updated on august 8, 2024 at 7:16 am.

A couple of Pennsylvania guys can now call themselves gold medalists as they pushed for gold in rowing at the Paris Olympics while those who know them back home cheered them on.

The U.S. men's four boat featuring Justin Best, Nick Mead, Liam Corrigan and Michael Grady took gold in the men's four Thursday morning at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium. Their time of 5:49:03 beat out silver medalists New Zealand and bronze medalists Great Britain.

Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are

As Mead -- a Stratford, Chester County, native who went to Princeton University -- and Best -- a Kennett Square native who rowed for Drexel University -- splashed the water in victorious joy, chants of "U-S-A" roared from a watch party at the Drexel Boathouse along Kelly Drive in Philadelphia.

"We were focused, we were locked in, we built that trust," Best said while expressing "love" for his teammates.

Gathered along the Schuylkill River where Best has rowed for years were former Drexel classmates, teammates and even his former Drexel coach.

"We are so proud of Justin, we are so happy," Drexel rowing coach Paul Savell told NBC10's Brenna Weick as he watched Best receive his gold medal. "What a finish to the race, that was amazing."

The win was the first American gold in the men's four since the 1960 Games in Rome, Italy.

"Just so excited for this day and for it all to come through," Savell said.

Might Best be back to defend his gold in 2028 in Los Angeles? It was his high school yearbook dream.

"It would be great to represent the U.S. in the U.S.," Best said after the race. "We'll make that decision when the time's right."

Wiggs wins stunning gold - with lottery ticket in her kayak

Canoe

Canoeist Emma Wiggs won Paralympic gold but could have lost a small fortune - not that she cares.

Wiggs, 44, claimed top podium top spot for a third consecutive Games beating nearest rival, Canada’s Brianna Hennessy, by over a second and a half to win the women’s va’a 200m VL2 single title in Vaires-sur-Marne.

And the one-time sitting volleyball player believes the fates were on her side.

“When I saw my race number was 44, I initially thought it was a bad omen but thankfully not,” she said.

“I was racing with a scratchcard in the boat because the National Lottery has been my biggest supporter, without them we just wouldn’t be here or competitive. Unfortunately, I’ve lost it in all the splashing about, hopefully it wasn’t a jackpot.

“I don’t think about my age, it’s just a number and I’m still competitive against the fastest girls in the world.

“Why stop? LA sounds nice right? My father and my stepmother live in Texas so I think they’re pushing for me to carry on. I’m still going fast and I’m loving every second.”

gold yacht

Emma Wiggs won gold in the Kayak single KL2 200m - Women final

Wiggs switched sports after London 2012 and has proved virtually unstoppable with paddle in hand, with 11 world titles alongside her three Paralympic golds.

However, she admits the build-up to these Games has not been easy, following a change of coach and battles with a persistent shoulder injury.

“I’m going to have surgery next week but that’s the ups and downs of the sport,” she added.

“I love it, I never get up and think of this as work, even when it’s horrible and horrendous weather.”

Great Britain brought up their 300th gold medal since the start of National Lottery funding when Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid won men’s wheelchair tennis doubles gold at Roland Garros on Friday.

Wiggs was number 304, her sport crucially benefitting from over £46m in funding since the Lottery, soon to celebrate its 30th birthday, began.

Another reason Wiggs might have no intention of slowing down is team-mate Jeanette Chippington, who made her Games debut as a swimmer in 1988 and just missed the podium here aged 54.

gold yacht

Jeanette Chippington made her Games debut as a swimmer in 1988 and just missed the podium here aged 54.

Chippington has lived through the revolution in Paralympic sport - in Seoul some of the team paid their way and television coverage was restricted to an hour of highlights broadcast at Christmas.

“Emma told me she was proud of me and that means everything,” said Chippington.

“I’m obviously really gutted not to get a medal and I didn’t want to get upset because I am really proud to be here.

“My children are out here, my husband, my brother, load of friends and family so it’s going to be tough.

“It’s my eighth Games and just to be here is amazing. Once it has settled down, I’ll be able to give myself a really big pat on the back. I couldn’t have done anymore in the race.”

Elsewhere, Charlotte Henshaw edged out British team-mate Hope Gordon for a one-two in the VL3 classification, while David Phillipson won silver in the men’s KL2 race, just behind Australia’s Curtis McGrath.

The key to Paddle UK’s success is their big investment in talent transfer, identifying athletes from other sports and then working to make them compete on the water.

Both Henshaw and Gordon came from swimming - and both have another chance to make the podium on Sunday.

gold yacht

Charlotte Henshaw (left) won gold, Hope Gordon (right) won silver in the Canoe single VL3 200m - Women event.

“I never felt unfulfilled in my swimming career, I was immensely proud of what I had achieved in the pool,” said Henshaw.

“I would be lying if I hadn’t thought about achieving that ultimate dream which is to be Paralympic champion and I hadn’t done that. I was very close in London but got touched out by a fingernail.

“Initially, I thought it would be a good challenge, something different, a new skill to learn but very quickly that athlete mindset took over.

“When I was going around trying different sports after I retired from swimming, as soon as I sat in a boat, I knew it was where I was meant to be. They made me feel very welcome and felt very at home on the water and there is no secret that former swimmers seem to make very good para-canoeists.”
